Thoughts on Youth With You Ep 9-10 and new personal Top 9
Alright, I watched Ep. 10 when it came out, though I was admittedly not as awake as I sometimes am when I watch episodes. A lot of my focus was on the end of the ranking announcement and what they’re doing for the next mission.
More under the cut to avoid spoilers. [Edited very slightly because I apparently dozed off during an important part the first time I watched, and went back and watched that part and some things make more sense now, oops past self.]
I am really glad that Duan Xiaowei made it through at 60, but I’m worried for her for next elimination. I hope that she can really shine in this next round.
One thing with this round being over is that all the votes reset to zero, so more than even exactly what the rankings of the girls have been, it is the trends of their rankings that are somewhat important. Girls who have been trending downwards in rankings may end up struggling and dropping this round. Girls who have been on an upward trajectory may make big leaps. Statistically, towards the end of a voting round, the ability to make big leaps gets less and less.
Speaking of making big leaps and probably the person I am now most disappointed for not making it through... Huang Xiaoyun went from rank 83 in the last posted ranking from the votes to in contention for slot 60. I really wish that she’d performed one episode earlier because with how close that was, I think that it might have been the difference between her making top 60 and not. I don’t regret Duan Xiaowei being the one to make it over her because I really like both of them, but I am sad that we couldn’t have had a situation where both of them made it.
Me being entertained by statistics about the show:
Of the 9 individual trainees, only 1 of them did not make it through the first elimination
16 companies had all their trainees eliminated (or left the show) in the first elimination: Ladybees Multimedia (1), Banana Entertainment (4), South Fest (1), One Cool Jasco (2), Encore Music (1), Feibao Media (1), Alliance Art Group (4), Hedgehog Brothers Entertainment (1), Huayi Brothers (1), Love & Peace (1), Lion Heart Entertainment (1), Lehui Media (1), Off/Shore Music (1), Channy Dynasty (1), Yizong Cultural (1), Happy Jump Culture (1)
Only 4 companies with multiple trainees had all their trainees survive the first elimination: D.wang Entertainment (2), Hippo Film (4), Mountain Top Entertainment (2), Shanghai Star48 Culture Media Group (10)
There are now 31 remaining companies with trainees (where Individual Trainees are being counted as 1 company for this statistic)
The highest ranked trainee from Ep 6 to be eliminated was at rank 51 in Ep 6 (Wang Siyu)
The highest ranked trainee from Ep 4 to be eliminated was at rank 43 in Ep 4 (Cheng Manxin)
The highest ranked trainee from Ep 2 to be eliminated was at rank 28 in Ep 2 (Lin Weixi)
I think that this connects to something that I said earlier about rank trends over the course of an elimination cycle. The later you get in the elimination cycle, the harder it is for someone to drop out that cycle even if say they get no votes for the last few days of the cycle.
Of the 10 initial A rank trainees (1st judges’ eval), 9 survived the first elimination (90%)
Of the 31 initial B rank trainees, 20 survived the first elimination (64.5%)
Of the 34 initial C rank trainees, 16 survived the first elimination (47%)
Of the 26 initial D rank trainees, 12 survived the first elimination (46.2%)
Of the 8 initial F rank trainees, 4 survived the first elimination (50%)
I am using initial rank because it correlates a lot to the audience’s initial impression of the trainees’ skills (especially for unknown trainees and unknown companies)
A rank fared the best statistically, followed by B rank. While F rank fared the next best, there were also a mere 8 initial F rank trainees, so I think that it skewed the chances a little bit, and anyone who initially did get F rank showing notable improvement was going to stand out in that context. I think that this really does show that at least for the first elimination, skill played a pretty solid role in getting audience attention and getting the screen time to get audience attention.
The top 9′s initial ranks include: A (4), B (3), C (1), D (1)
This lines up pretty cleanly with the elimination statistics too, which is nice.
All of the initial F rank trainees who survived made it out of F rank in re-evaluation! (3 to D, and 1 to B)
All of this statistics babbling is basically me being interested to see how the trends of who makes it through eliminations goes. I am using initial ranking because I think that it is (a) the first impression of skill level which is important, (b) overall relatively fair from what the trainees showed, (c) the one that shows the best what the trainees could do with a combination of working to their strengths, time, and effort. The performance grades were based on audience votes, so they were not quite testing the same thing, and the re-evaluations seemed relatively accurate, but they were testing how well someone could quickly and accurately learn a new choreography and song that might not be in their comfort/strengths zone. As we move forward in the show, trainees will be mostly aiming for things that they think they can do well in or are interested in, and they will be working with their groups to create a strong performance in those areas. There is a lot that can be done by using a group to work with someone’s strengths and around their weaknesses.
Fun moments of Ep 10 for me: them showing cute interactions of Yuxin with the rest of her group (the little prank). Basically every time Yuxin looked so fond of all the other contestants (and honestly her speech for 8th place), just Yuxin in this episode.
I am curious for next episode to see what songs the different girls end up doing (also how many of the girls from “The Eve” team end up on “Mama” team because I’m curious). I definitely did not fully grasp how the song placements were working though (I was starting to fall asleep at that point), but they had to do some sort of survey?
[EDITED PART: the strikethrough paragraph above was from the part that I apparently dozed off for part of, thus the confusion.] It looks like they had them fill out a survey and the highest ranked person who chose each song as their preferred song got put on that song as the leader of the first group for it, and then they got to pick their rival leader, but we’ve only seen some of them picked. Yuxin picked my favorite song from the options, the one that is a vocal leaning song, I’m surprised, but good surprised, she’s out here wanting to show that she’s well rounded and possibly picking a song based on which song she likes most. (I’m a little surprised that neither she nor Jiaqi picked “Mama” but mostly good surprised, they’re showing variety!). I am really curious who Yuxin’s opponent leader is going to be.
Also, they are starting the voting for who goes to which original song for next round. I didn’t have any of them stand out to me as the one that I love and really want people on from the initial clips, but they were short clips of the sound, and honestly the clips are often a little misleading. I just hope that all the girls end up happy with the song they end up in. [End of Edited part]
My new Top 9:
Liu Yuxin: This should not be a surprise, she was my favorite going in, and I’m really happy with how she’s doing on the show so far. She’s clearly bonding with other trainees, and her screen time definitely is showing her in a good light (this series is pretty good at doing that for most trainees, but I’ve been impressed with how they’ve shown her here in many ways). She’s grown so much since her days on the elimination show for Ladybees, and she was already amazing then. It’s impressive that she’s not quite 23.
Xu Jiaqi: I’ve really enjoyed her here so far. She’s shown that she’s well rounded, and I have really enjoyed all her performances so far. I also really like her dynamics with Yuxin (and the rest of “The Eve” team).
Zeng Keni: She’s stood out to me from her intro video and during the audition, and while she was a little bit buried in the sheer depth of “The Eve” she did really well there too. Also, really well rounded. I like the well rounded ones.
Liu Lingzi: I liked her in auditions, but she really shone in her dance stage. I really really like her dance lines, and auditions shows that she’s solid all around, as does re-eval.
Lu Keran: Another all around solid trainee. I really enjoy the tomboys, and I really enjoy her personality as well as her skill level. I think that “The Eve” showed that having both her and Yuxin in a group makes for a really balanced image.
Shangguan Xiai: She’s a vocalist that I’m really enjoying, and again, really well rounded. I like how she’s got a different image than a lot of the trainees, and it’s not being treated as a problem! I also really like her teamwork.
An Qi: She stood out from the start, but she really sold me with “Play.” She really grasped the feeling of a Jolin song, and considering Jolin is one of my favorite cpop artists (and just pop artists in general), this is a big point in her favor. I love her dynamics with other trainees too.
Xie Keyin: A rapper has finally made it onto my list. I take a lot longer to warm up to rappers in general. She’s a well rounded rapper, and she’s got great stage energy. I also really like her dynamics with Yuxin, which helps. (Honestly, so many of the other trainees seem to really like her, which helps.)
Gou Xueying: She’s been really growing on me and getting my attention. I was really happy that she made it through this round of eliminations, so I hope to see her moving up just a little in the next round!
Overall, there are a lot of trainees that I like! I’m sure that I will also get the chance to actually notice some new people now that we’ve got only 60 trainees instead of over 100.

The Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), China's most established cinema event, has unveiled the opening titles and competition selection for its 2019 edition.
The festival will kick off on June 15 with a double bill of Chinese WWII epic The Eight Hundred and local drama Beautiful Voyage from filmmaker Zhang Jiarui.
Landing The Eight Hundred as an opener is something of a coup for the Shanghai event. The film, produced by Huayi Brothers with a lavish budget of over $80 million, is the first Chinese action film shot entirely on Imax cameras, and it is expected to become one of the country's biggest event movies of the summer when it opens wide on July 5.
Chinese action hero Wu Jing, star of Chinese mega-blockbuster Wolf Warrior 2 and The Wandering Earth, will bring the star power to Shanghai's opening red carpet, serving as the event's official 2019 ambassador. English actor Tom Hiddleston, already well known to local filmgoers as Loki from the Avengers franchise, will help wrap up the festivities by attending the closing ceremony on June 24.
Other stars slated to walk the carpet and participate in SIFF events include X-Men star Nicholas Hoult, Milla Jovovich, Taiwanese actor Chen Bolin, Japanese stars Ayaka Miyoshi and Mao Inoue, and a slew of Chinese talent, including actresses Yao Chen, Ni Ni, Deng Jiajia, Zhou Dongyu and Yong Mei.
Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan, winner of the 2014 Cannes Palme d’Or, is presiding over the jury that will decide the winners of SIFF's annual Golden Goblet Awards.
Ceylan is joined on the jury by Chinese actress Zhao Tao, Italian director Paolo Genovese (whose 2016 film Perfect Strangers was remade as Chinese thriller Kill Mobile, earning $93 million last year), Russia’s Aleksey German Jr. (director of the period biopic Dovlatov), Indian hitmaker Rajkumar Hirani (3 Idiots), Mexican producer Nicolas Celis (Roma) and Chinese actor Wang Jingchun (winner of this year's Berlin Silver Bear for best actor).
Shanghai's competition lineup includes a broad sampling of world cinema, with a discernible emphasis on filmmaking from countries located along Chinese president Xi Jinping's geopolitical Belt and Road infrastructure and soft-power project. Notably, given the ongoing U.S.-China trade war and controversy over Canada's arrest of a top executive from Huawei, not a single film from North America made Shanghai's selection this year — a sharp contrast from recent years.
Main competition titles include Russian director Pavel Lungin's war drama Leaving Afghanistan (also known as Brother), Iranian film Castle of Dreams, German family drama Many Happy Returns, Chinese crime film Vortex and Mexican actor Gael García Bernal's directorial debut Chicuarotes, which recently bowed at Cannes (the full SIFF competition lineup is below).
The festival's Asian New Talent Awards, which honor emerging film professionals from the region, will be handed out by a jury headed by Chinese star director Ning Hao (Crazy Alien).
SIFF's documentary and animation sections (see lineups below), meanwhile, will be assessed by juries lead by Russian director Viktor Kossakovsky (Aquarela) and Irish filmmaker Tomm Moore (The Breadwinner, The Secret of Kells), respectively.
Altogether, SIFF will screen approximately 500 films across its key competition categories, country specific sidebars and historical retrospectives. Festival organizers said they received more than 3,900 film submissions from 112 countries and regions this year. Local state media were keen to note that nearly half of the applications, over 1,800 titles from 53 countries, came from countries and territories participating in Xi's Belt and Road Initiative.
