ah where do i even start with this one? xiao zhan gets drunk and texts yibo, yibo shows up at his house and whisks him away on a road trip. i felt so much emotions reading this fic, everything was so raw and it really deals with the pressures of being famous and homophobia. this is a super realistic fic and there’s a lot of emotional hurt/comfort, you’ll literally end up wanting to wrap these two in a big blanket and just protect them from the world (lol like we don’t already want to do that). my absolute favourite part was the confession scene, like it was so messy and funny, and it’s just so them, especially the pokemon part lmao. this art is based on that scene and it’s exactly how i imagined it 🥺 this is just so well written and it’s one of my favs!

I should probably revisit this topic again when I finish books 4 and 5 because an analysis would be incomplete without finishing the novel. But for now, I’ve been thinking some thoughts.

I think the play between free will, fate, karma, and luck in the novel is super interesting. Something about Xie Lian trying to find the “third path” and Shi Wudu defying fate and Hua Cheng’s uncanny power over luck... like, with all these elements, I’m sure. I’m sure if I think about it hard enough, I can understand why the motto of the book is “no paths are bound” even though time and time again the characters keep telling Xie Lian and the reader that there is suffering when you fight fate and that, conventionally, you shouldn’t meddle with fate. Xianle is proof of this.

Yet Shi Wudu was able to overcome fate (at the cost of a scholar’s misfortune and that of his family’s). And he was successful for a long time too! He would’ve gotten away with it if He Xuan wasn’t resentful enough to power his way through death and come out of it as a calamity with an obsession with revenge.

Hua Cheng was supposed to live a life of misfortune too, I believe (Star of Solitude baby). But when we meet him in the book, he’s already a wealthy and powerful ghost king with all the power of luck in his hands.

I posted this on reddit but I think (??) that’s what the problem of two cups is about?

So my reddit response went like this:

Interestingly, Xie Lian as LQQ's Guoshi gives a similar story. Two people are hungry and trying to rob each other of food. Guoshi!Xie Lian posits that to solve the problem, the third person must give food from their own purse. Similarly, his two sword attack that saved LQQ's life twice only works because the third person (Xie Lian) absorbs the attacks. We're starting to see a pattern here.

When Guoshi!Xie Lian finishes, LQQ asks what would happen if the third person didn't have enough food to provide. Xie Lian asks, "What do you think?" and LQQ answers, "Maybe he shouldn't have intercepted from the start."

Sounds familiar? The problem of the two cups foreshadows how Xie Lian handles the fall of Xianle. It's even more on the nose when you think of how Xianle's doom started because of a drought. Yong'an was thirsty, there are only limited resources, and it's not like the king didn't try to mitigate this (although imo he was still fairly incompetent as a ruler). Xie Lian's solution was to create more rain with the Rain Master's help. To "provide another cup" but that cup is not enough, may have even been too late. We all know how Book 2 ended.

Throughout the book, Xie Lian says he wants to save the common people, but he doesn't always have the power to do so. Nobody does and it's ridiculous to put that burden on just one person. That's what Xie Lian did to himself, what Xianle did to Xie Lian. He was put on a pedestal and doomed to fall because, god or not, he's only human and could not provide another cup.

There is another thing to point out, but I don't think I can speak on it until I finish the novel. Xie Lian's answer, to "give another cup," is him trying to choose the (impossible?) "third path." I've seen this mentioned in the novel several times.

When Xie Lian tries to solve all the problems of Xianle and keeps failing, Mu Qing admonishes him, "THEY REACHED THEIR BAD END, WE’LL ALREADY HAVE PERISHED! YOU DON’T HAVE A THIRD PATH AND THERE IS NO SECOND CUP OF WATER. WAKE UP, YOUR HIGHNESS! YOU’RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME.”

When He Xuan exacts his revenge plan and Shi Wudu tries to bargain, He Xuan says coldly, "Did I give you a third path?"

When White No-Face meets Xie Lian at the Kiln, he offers Xie Lian a third path (for XL to kill himself then kill White No-Face and escape the Kiln as a Supreme).

In other words, each time a "third path" is presented, the novel posits that it's an impossibility. You have to work with the choices presented to you. And any time you mess with fate (Xianle, Wuyong?, SQX, etc.) it always ends in suffering for someone. You can't please everyone.

Interestingly though, TGCF's motto is "no paths are bound." And there is one person whose fate was changed for the better: Hua Cheng. Hua Cheng was born under the Star of Solitude and is supposedly destined to live a life of misfortune. And yet now, he is the Supreme Ghost King with all the wealth and power and incredible, incredible luck. In many ways, Hua Cheng for some reason (because he was saved by Xie Lian, a “savior” to nullify the Star of Solitude’s fate?) was able to defy his predestined fate of misfortune.

And oftentimes, it's with his intervention (his luck?) that Xie Lian in the present can freely explore his third paths.

Now, I'm still procrastinating on Book 4 and 5 so I can't definitely say yet what the conclusion of the novel is yet with regards to the theme of choosing a third path. Maybe Xie Lian makes a "third path" solution work for him one day? I know some spoilers and can think of a few possible answers to this, but I can't say until I finish the novel.

But yeah, I think that despite what Guoshi probably wanted to teach us, we should still keep in mind that one of the novel's themes is, "no paths are bound" :D

So! All that said, I’ve been thinking some thoughts, as one does. I’m not sure if I’m reading too much into it, if I’m biased and reading with an agenda lol. Again, I’ll revisit this when I finish books 4 and 5.

But I’m thinking about how Hua Cheng respects Xie Lian’s decisions and is always there to unconditionally support him unless it ends in self-harm. All the times they “shared spiritual energy”

Book 3 is titled “No Paths Are Bound.” Let’s go over some events. When Xie Lian was at the lake trying to catch the fetus spirit, he had a dilemma. If he should come up for air, he would swallow the spirit, so naturally (in his eyes) he could just swallow Fangxin too. Otherwise, he’d drown. But Hua Cheng arrives and gives him another option: he could just give him air, duh!

In the Black Water arc, Hua Cheng urged Xie Lian not to meddle too much. When SQX gets kidnapped by the Reverend, they could either try to find them on their own (a futile effort) or let them be. They can’t report to the heavens because Shi Wudu was preparing for his heavenly calamity. But then, Hua Cheng shares his spiritual powers to Xie Lian that allows him to explore a third option: why not just switch places with SQX? Brilliant!

So idk how the novel will wrap up its themes, but I’m thinking that if we continue in this direction, one way we can see this end is like this. The premise is: you can’t save the world alone. Sometimes kindness and hard work alone is not enough to overcome fate, because fate intertwines people and taking something for yourself means taking something away from others. But. But. If fate intertwines people, then if those people could work together, would they be able to change their future? If luck works like karma, if it works to balance things out, then can it be shared?

I think this is how the book will end (lol if I’m wrong then welp, take this whole essay as a joke, it’s fine) because it ties very, very neatly with how Xie Lian first meets Hua Cheng at the ox cart.

On the way to Puqi village, they discover that it’s the Zhongyuan festival and they must be careful not to cross over to the ghost realm. In the forest, they meet a fork in the road that splits into two paths. Xie Lian takes out a fortune shaker and lets fortune decide their path.

“By Heaven Official’s Blessing, no paths are bound! Every road leads to heaven, may they all be walked! The first stick left, the second stick right! We’ll go the path with the best fortune!”

Naturally, his sticks always have the worst of luck. But Hua Cheng intervenes and tries his luck, and of course, his luck is always good. I’m not sure if the point of this scene is that their lucks cancel each other out, but regardless, isn’t it so lucky for them to meet in the first place? Or maybe it’s fate after all?

Either way, point is, if Xie Lian tried to save the two of them alone, fortune says they will meet a bad end. Or, well, they will go through an unlucky path. Xie Lian tries to give another cup, a third path, and like a magic 8 ball, fate says “that’s a bad idea, no”

But Hua Cheng goes, “nah, we’re in this together” and helps him out. And the thing is. I don’t think it’s even a matter of Hua Cheng overpowering Xie Lian’s fate, because time and time again all he really does is let Xie Lian decide where to go and he just follows. He doesn’t solve Xie Lian’s problems for him, but he shares the burden. And maybe. Maybe that’s the point?

If two people are thirsty and there’s only one cup of water, and the one who drinks lives and the one who doesn’t dies, as a god who would you give the cup to? Well, why not let them share the cup? If changing the fortune of one person reverses another person’s fortune, why can’t those two people work together and ping-pong those fortunes back and forth to each other and create their own future together?

There’s something to be said here about agency and whatnot but my brain is scrambled and this post is too long. But at least, I think I’ve successfully procrastinate from starting book 4 with this internet essay lol

TGCF Book 3 Reaction pt. 1

Ahh! I know I said I was going to post about the start of my book 3 reactions, but book 3 had so much in it that I couldn’t stop reading it. There are like 3-5 arcs that went down in book 3. You know, I feel as though book 3 takes up the majority of the content in TGCF. There was so much in it.

((Hm, I might actually have to split this into a lot of parts depending on how many notes I put in, should I divide the rest of this by what I think are arcs? I think I might do that))

Now onto the reactions, starting at the beginning

Ch. 89: Xie Lian stabs near Qi Rong

- Me: Oh thank god. Xie Lian didn’t stab him, but now the tension between them from book 1 is now redefined in my head

Xie Lian uses Hua Cheng as a threat towards Qi Rong

- Xie Lian now has an ally in Hua Cheng and isn’t afraid of asking him for help

Xie Lian actually feels guilty of asking Hua Cheng for help and it was just a ruse earlier. Think he is behaving too familiar with Hua Cheng

- Me: No you aren’t. It’s okay to ask for help

Shi Qingxuan and Pei Ming are confronting one another. Pei Ming is warning the Wind Master.

- Me: Hm, Pei Ming’s words towards the Wind Master makes me think of a weird parallel to Xie Lian

Descendant of Pei Ming’s got sentence to exile after the Rain Master beat him up

- Me: Who was thrown down, I wonder. Is it that same guy who is the officer of Ghost City?

Ch 95: Hua Cheng dives into the water after Xie Lian in his dream(?) and kisses transfers air to Xie Lian

- Me: AHHH! THAT WATER SCENE IS WOW. XIE LIAN IS CALLING IT A KISS. WOW

- Also me: You know, that’s not how it works. What the two of you are circulating is Carbon Dioxide since you are breathing it out... Unless if Hua Cheng’s weird ghost biology makes him breath out oxygen instead.

Xie Lian is so flustered that he can’t think straight and blurts random stuff. Hua Cheng and Xie Lian have a moment when it is revealed that Hua Cheng teleported them to Ghost City

- Me: Holy shit, that is something. Wait, isn’t Xie Lian technically asleep still? What happened to his physical body?

Ghost in Ghost City all know how lonely/thirsty Hua Cheng is and immediately tries to ‘help him in his woes of love’, but go about it the wrong way. Hua Cheng: “SCRAM!”

- Me: lol. Why do I find that so funny?

DongFeng Headcanons

Headcanons coming to you from @m-mimima and @lovesasusaku12 . Because we love the DongFeng couple and need more than what the show gave us. Though we were blessed with a lot.

Both Dong Hua and Fj are super thirsty for each other and some of the women try to shift into FJ. Dong Hua catches on pretty quickly and questions them about all the things they did/do. He usually is still pretty ice face unless FJ is around and then all of his attention is on her. Everyone is confused af about this powerful, stoic god who is putty in FJ’s hands.

Fj likes to hang out with new immortal General Ye, but she always makes sure that DH is around and flatters him a bit more than usual. Dh likes Ye, just not around his wife.

Fj becomes more mature, but she is still FJ through and through. She still loves to play pranks and is super flustered when DH calls her Fu Ren.

If anyone tries to bully Fj or say anything about DH or her family, she reminds them who her husband is. She is pretty powerful on her own, but there are some people that don’t listen to her. DH always shows up and silently supports her.

After the ending of pillow book, DH and Fj finally get married. Dh personally issues a statement saying that he will destroy anyone that dares to stop or interrupt the ceremony. Needless to say, the ceremony goes well and they are finally together “officially”.

DH being a baby and calling FJ back for slight injuries. She doesn’t really mind and loves to be around him.

Zhi He dies when she comes back for visits and sees Dh and FJ together and tries to get in between them, but Dh stops her and is like why are you coming in between me and Fu Ren. FJ always gets flustered when Dh calls her Fu Ren. DF love to sit together at banquets and she serves him food and he ignores everyone but her and likes to tuck flowers in her hair. Fj gets sad thinking about Aranya, but DH reminds Fj that the failed fate brought them together.

DH and Fj have three kids, two boys and a girl. DH slightly favors his little girl because she is basically a mini FJ. Fj and baby girl usually fight over who gets to sit in DH’s lap (in fox form).

Dh is forever sad at missing Fj’s pregnancy with gun gun. So he keeps FJ close during her subsequent ones and is a super attentive husband. He likes to burns summons from the heavenly king for meetings, so FJ just goes with him. But he pays more attention to her and stops meetings to get something that FJ wants, and guilt trips fj with him missing Gun gun’s time. He hugs gun gun a little bit tighter and dotes on him too.

The third pregnancy (baby girl) is the hardest on FJ. At night, she likes to grab DH’s hand and tells him to tell his restless child to stop and let her rest. He replies with “this one takes after their mother in being restless” but dies happily on the inside.

Dongfeng babies are usually well behaved and the entire Bai family is astounded. But since they are the kids of two trolls,they love to pull pranks and never get caught. DH loves to join in the pranks.

The babies join Dh in the meetings. He loves wearing the baby in slings and curl up against him when they are older. If anyone gets too rowdy, then he points to the baby sling and tells them to settle down and not wake his kids.

DH loving his family and having family dinners even after the kids grow up. He loves having his family surrounding him because he has been alone for way too long. He also makes sure that all of his family is protected. He doesn’t hover, but makes sure that they are okay.

Dijun loves to spoil his daughter and carries her everywhere either in his arms or sitting on his shoulders. He teaches his daughter how to play Go and she eventually beats LS (as a small baby). Dh tells her to call LS “nephew” because he lost. Zhong Lin comes to tell him that FJ is calling the baby and DH is like *___*, I’ll take her.

FJ uses her babies to get out of trouble. They usually just show up and say “Grandpa” and BOOM, forgiven. #noshame

The DF babies are both mentally and emotionally smart. They are well behaved, but very naughty. They and BQ’s kids cause so much mischief. They love to prank Si Ming, who just accepts his fate.

Everyone likes to cling onto FJ and she is all “I love you all, but i have stuff to do. When did i become the responsible one?” =_=“.

The sky kingdom is a lively place due to all the little ones (Df, BQ, and LS and Cheng yu’s kids). The girls have tea parties at Tai Chen Palace and FJ makes them pastries and DH provides the tea and hangs out for a bit with them.

Zhi He dies every time she comes to visit and sees the df babies. She knows that she can’t do anything to them bc Dijun will not stand for it. Whenever Zhi he tries to pull anything, the babies call her Grumpy Old aunty instead of just aunt. She also dies seeing the (df) baby girl looking a lot like a mini fj.

Xiao Yan joining the babysitting squad (He is always supervised with the kids). Dh’s baby girl develops a baby crush on Yan yan and Dh loses his mind and tells her no she doesn’t like him like that. Dh stays a little jealous of Xiao Yan and FJ is ???.

DF’s daughter grows up to be a beauty (after her mother) and Dh threatens any suitors with his sword (he’s not subtle about it). LS uses his friendship with Dh to threaten away his daughter’s suitors.

Science and the Heaven of Light-Sound

There were no creatures on earth.

The Deva came to earth from Ābhāsvara.

There were no sun, moon, stars, or days and nights.

There was no time or seasons.

The Deva from Ābhāsvara were self-luminous beings that could fly in the sky.

They often travelled between the earth and Ābhāsvara upon its discovery.

The Deva needed no consumption of foods.

Their lifestyle was beyond our understanding.

The Deva found a thing called “the Milk” on earth.

Some of them randomly grabbed and tasted it.

Originally, the way the Deva consumed foods was different from that of ours.

That made them lighter and always luminous.

Yet, since the point when they craved for “the Milk,” they grew muscle.

They became heavy and could no longer fly in the sky.

They were able to walk on earth since then.

They no longer radiated pure lights.

Due to such ceasing of self-luminous status, sun, moon, and stars emerged.

The sun appeared, and with the earth’s rotation, days and nights came to be.

The moon revolves around the earth.

A complete revolution of moon around the earth is a month.

The earth revolves around the sun.

A complete revolution of earth around the sun is a year.

The more Milk they consumed, the uglier they became.

Deva who consumed lesser still retained their beauty.

From that moment, there was beauty and ugliness in appearance.

The beautiful ones looked down the ugly ones.

The ugly ones became jealous about the beautiful ones.

Once they had difference, they had argument and they fought.

The Milk disappeared, but there was less-tasty “earthly savory” everywhere.

The Deva who consumed more became ugly.

Those who consumed less were beautiful.

They saw each other as obstructing existence, and eventually they made war on each other.

The earthly savory disappeared, but there was another substitute with lesser taste.

The same thing happened.

When the second kind of earthly savory disappeared, the soil grew natural rice.

It’s a kind of bran-less grain that tasted delicious.

It needed not be cooked and they could just grab it and eat it.

There was no distinction of men and women.

The two sexes derived from the consumption of the grain.

Those with greater emotions were women, and those with lesser emotions were men.

Men and women grew affection and love among them.

The Deva who did not consume earthly savory and the grain were noble and supreme beings.

They blamed these men and women.

The men felt shameful of themselves and kneeled.

The women brought food to them and held them up.

Since then, the men called the women who brought them foods wife.

The Deva blamed them for their doing and ordered them to leave.

These men and women returned after three months of moving around.

They found out that other Deva were doing the same thing.

And no one felt it wrong to become husband and wife.

The Deva did not live in houses when they arrived at earth.

But then they had distinction of men and women, and so they built houses for shelter.

Before consuming the grain, they were born out of incarnation.

Since the time when they became men and women and were able to reproduce, the mothers could become pregnant and give birth to children.

Humans are then “born from mother” thereafter.

Originally, when humans were hungry, they gathered natural rice and ate them on the spot.

Later, some were lazy and gather two portions a time.

Such allowed them to offer sufficient foods for five days.

In ancient times, people reaped the cereals.

The rice could grow naturally, and they needed not to cultivate them.

Later, they reaped the rice too much.

Then the rice ceased to grow and natural rice was no more.

Instead, the soil grew cereals with bran.

People had to thresh and filter before cooking them for food.

This kind of cereal did not grow as fast as before.

In order to cultivate the cereal, people divided the land.

Their own fields came to be.

Some farmers had poor harvest, and so they stole others’ properties.

And they fought each other.

They selected a good-looking and virtuous person to resolve their disputes.

In return they would give him foods.

That man was called a king.

In the beginning, the kings were virtuous.

But later, some kings became fatuous and foolish.

Originally, human life span lasted 84,000 years on average.

When they started to theft and hurt each other,

Their life became shorter and shorter.

Three thousand years ago

When people could live 100 years in average, Gautama Buddha appeared in this world and redeemed many people with the Dharma.

Later on, the humanity still made evil karmas.

Their life span reduced even further to the nowadays 70 years on average.

When their life span was reduced to 10 years in the future, females married and gave birth to children 5 months old.

Their height decreased one inch per 100 years to one foot.

They became barbaric and the end of world shall come.

At this point, all grains went extinct.

If one could find a grain, he would treasure it just like how we treasure our jewelries now.

Fleshes scattered due to excessive slaughter of lives.

Nothing could be consumed as foods.

People cooked the withered bones to sustain their lives.

They had no fabrics but only human hair for their clothes.

Human hair was the most luxurious material for clothes.

Their sacred bodies were no longer wearing jewels and gems but were armed with blades and steels.

The land became barren and no grains could be grown.

Mosquitos, hornets, and serpents disturbed people together.

Gold, silver, agate, and other precious stones and metals no longer existed.

They could no longer hear the Daśa-kuśala-karmāni (Ten Good Practices).

They no longer respected their parents and elders.

They only did evil things.

Rage filled in their heart and they often killed and slayed each other.

A cruel war finally broke out.

People used grass as weapons to kill each other.

Some hid deeply in the mountains or caves.

When they met, they told each other:

“I won’t kill you

So don’t kill me.”

Seven days later, they went down the mountains, finding that the war had ended.

Those who did not hide in the mountains had all been destroyed.

The entire world had been through a catastrophe.

Only ten thousand people remained.

Those who survived and returned, seeing this tragedy, cried in mourn for seven days.

They then celebrated for seven days more for their fortune of survival.

They determined that they shall spare no efforts in doing good and so their life span increased.

People’s childhood extended to five hundred years, and women could still go into marriage or give birth to children at the age of 500.

Everyone was healthy.

Only nine pains and diseases still lingered in this world.

People could feel cold,

People could feel hot,

People could feel hungry,

People could feel thirsty,

People could have need for urinating,

People could have need for defecating,

People could have desires.

People could eat too much.

People still grew old.

Besides these problems, they met no challenges.

All could have enough foods and water.

Their life span increased or sometimes went back to the decreased state.

Following Gautama Buddha, Maitreya incarnated in this Sahā world

And enlightened the people.

He then became the fifth Buddha of bhadrakalpa.
