French leave: being absent without permission (Admiral W.H. Smyth, The Sailor's Word-Book)
A midshipman’s vacancy having occurred on board the frigate, the captain offered it to me. I gladly accepted of it; and while he was in the humour, I asked him for a week’s leave of absence; this he also granted, adding, at the same time, “No more French leave, if you please.”
— Frederick Marryat, Frank Mildmay (The Naval Officer)
The Hon. George Pryse Cambell (1793-1858), as a Midshipman (detail) by Henry Edridge, 1805.

A pencil drawing of the Princess, shown standing full length and leaning on a wall. She wears a miniature portrait or locket on a necklace, and has a scarf tied around her head and neck. Joseph Farington noted on 20 June 1802 that Samuel Lysons had told him that Edridge was at Windsor making drawings of the Princesses, 'but is obliged to wait their time and has them not to sit more than an hour in a day'.

A Pencil and grey wash drawing of Vice admiral Lord Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Copenhagen it was drawn by Henry Edridge (1768-1821)
This unknown portrait was first thought to be a print but it is in fact a painting and depicts Nelson as the victor of  the Battle of Copenhagen (1801) with the city’s warehouses blazing behind him and at his feet lies Marianne of France, his sword tip resting on her throat.
