Princess Alice was the third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Born on April 25th, 1843, she was given the full name of Alice Maud Mary.
Maud was a version of Matilda, chosen to honour one of her godmothers, Princess Sophia Matilda of Gloucester. Mary was chosen for Princess Mary, Duchess of Gloucester and Edinburgh. She was the daughter of George III and Queen Charlotte, and the Great-Aunt of the new princess, and had been born on the same day back in 1776.
