#Focus stacking for landscape using helicon remote manual

#Focus stacking for landscape using helicon remote series
In the world of macro photography, it can be a significant problem when trying to blend the images. This is not something you’d notice with the naked eye. When you change the focus, you’re also affecting the size of the image on the sensor by a small amount. This is particularly obvious in the background and foreground. But there is a change in the size and position of each component from one photo to the next. The camera and subject remained fixed in position. You’ll notice it’s not only the focus that changes from one image to the next. In this example, I’ve covered the area with four images.Ī four image sequence showing how the image magnification varies as the focus is adjusted. The number of photos you need will depend on the depth-of-field.
Take the next exposure and repeat until you’ve reached the furthest extent.
Re-focus the lens to this point to overlap the old depth-of-field with the previous one. Then examine the result on the back of the camera.
Focus on the foreground as shown above and take the first exposure.
Use a small aperture – try your lens’ sweet spot.
#Focus stacking for landscape using helicon remote manual
Set the camera to manual focus and manual exposure.
#Focus stacking for landscape using helicon remote series
We need a series of images that sweep the focus into the image. But the more distant components at the top of the frame are out-of-focus. Even at f/16, there is insufficient depth of field. The problem is that even at f/16, the depth of field is too shallow. But you can get a more interesting result by shooting at a low angle close to one edge of the board. This would mean most of the components would be a similar distance from the camera and in focus at the same time. It may have been easier to take this photo square onto the board. Take, for example, this macro photo of a printed circuit board. In practice, there’s more involved than blending a series of images. This ‘stack’ will produce a single sharp image where the whole subject is in sharp focus from front to back. Once you have a series of images, you can combine the focused areas from each photo. These will range from the nearest to the farthest point on your chosen subject. Alter the focus of each exposure to capture a succession of sharply focused ‘slices’. To bypass the DoF limitations, take several photos of the same subject. How to Use Image Stacking to Get Around the DoF Limitations At this angle and small distance, you will have trouble getting the whole subject in sharp focus. An auto reversing ring allows you to get very close to your subject. Instead, you need a more sophisticated approach – and that is what image stacking provides. There’s only so far you can go with camera and lens adjustments.
#Focus stacking for landscape using helicon remote full
But it has a depth of field at full magnification of 40 microns. Canon’s MP-E 65mm macro lens is capable of x1 to x5 magnifications. And a very shallow depth of field when shooting at the max aperture.Įven with the optimal aperture, the depth of field can still be small. Even when using a small aperture.įor the sharpest results, set your lens aperture to around the middle of its range. It’s quite common for the resulting macro depth of field to be only a few millimeters. You can use a small aperture to maximize the depth of field. Obtaining a large image of a small object on your sensor means getting the camera very close to the subject. This presents a particular difficulty in macro photography. But this will go down as you move the camera closer to the subject. You might have enough depth of field for a normal subject such as a person several meters away. But it won’t be by the amount you might expect. The same adjustments will change the depth of field in macro photography as well. If your camera lacks a depth of field preview button, take a test shot. Particularly if you switch your camera to live view without exposure simulation. More of the scene is in focus at smaller apertures. To preview the effect, use your camera’s depth-of-field preview button if it has one. But you don’t see the effect a lower aperture has on depth of field while composing a shot. Modern DSLRs don’t shut down the lens aperture until the moment you take the photo. What Is Depth of Field and What Does It Have to Do With Image Stacking

But certainly more often than not, you simply don’t. Take a look at your documents and ask yourself, do I really need all this stuff on paper? And sometimes you do. It doesn’t make sense for you to print out the 50 terms and conditions pages included in the receipt of an application purchase. There’s no requirement to print in color if many of what you print is text or basic graphics.Ĭonsider (and look) before you print. You can reduce clutter and save tincture and paper by only printing the material you actually need. Color printing can be more expensive than white and black, both in regards to the expense of colorant and also since lots of printing machines consume more energy when printing in color. Print in white and black as much as possible. It’s important to keep in mind that if you don’t use the home appliance often, the ink or toner might dry up and you’ll have to change the cartridge even if it’s not totally empty. This will help in reducing the cost per page of your prints. Think about a gadget with high-capacity capsules if you print infrequently. It pays to do your research so you don’t get stuck with a printer with inflated dye costs. Shop for a printer with a low cost per page.Ĭolorant expenses tend to be inversely proportional to the cost of the gadget high-end laser variations typically have a very low expense per page, while spending plan printers often have high material expenses. Your no-brainer maybe somebody else’s cash-saver. Overlook them and be grateful you’re already on the best track if some of these ideas appear self-evident. It’s likewise good to have a general concept of just how much you print monthly or perhaps every year (either personally or for your organization), as usage plays into what pointers will work for your particular scenario. The majority of them are tried and true, however some have disadvantages or up-front expenses that you need to weigh thoroughly before executing them. Here, we offer 8 money-saving printing pointers. Yes, the stuff can be expensive– particularly for individuals who print in high volume– but there are ways to reduce your printing costs gradually. Printer Toner and Ink Explained In A Simple WayĪs mentioned in this Office Supplies website, the most typical printer ink and printer toner complaints out there are generally from users regretting the high cost of it.

📖TIPS: Focus stacking
Tumblr media
Hello everyone,
I'm @jbarchietto and I'm honored to have been contacted by Brickcentral to offer you the tips for month September.
I'd like to talk about a technical subject that you probably won't use every day, but which can be very useful in certain cases, and which I use regularly in my photography: the focus stacking.
During photo shoots, we're generally looking for good sharpness on the main subject. However, it can happen that the depth of field used is too shallow to fully contain the subject. In such cases, the focus stacking technique can help us to enlarge this area.
In this first example, I wanted to show a caravan of forestmen in the forest. It's quite long, and as it's framed in depth, I can't get both the leading figures and those in the background in focus. I'm going to use the technique described:
Tumblr media
I've set the aperture of my lens to its sharpest point, the famous "sweet spot", around f/8. And I'm going to take a series of photos, sweeping the entire focus area from the closest to the furthest point. To do this, you need a tripod, so as not to change the framing between each shot, and set your camera to manual focus. To be sure of scanning the entire subject, I can mark the focus interval on the lens ring. Personally, I use the visual aid of my monitor. Then I photograph my images, which can vary according to the width of the zone. In this case, 10 images.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The rest of the process takes place on the computer, where you process the stack of images. With your photo editing software, or with dedicated software such as Helicon Focus, which you can try out as a demo. The algorithm will isolate the sharp areas of each image to recompose an entirely sharp image.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, the Final picture is processed. I’m working with raw files, so I can edit the final picture just as a regular shot to enhance colors or add details. I couldn't have achieved such a depth of field with a single shot, unless I reoriented the subject to bring it more into focus.

Whoa I just found two super cool products, it's not something I need but if you want to do focus stacked images but your camera doesn't have the built in capability to do it and you don't want to do it manually, Helicon, the same company that makes the best software for editing focus stacks, makes two devices that let you focus stack

Knight-in-training
Here's a little photo session with the knight from CMF Series 23 and a modified Nexo Knight bot. I guess I really will just buy any LEGO that is slightly medieval 🤣🏰
For this shot, I used a vintage Takumar 50mm f4 macro lens with a tilt adapter. A tilt adapter basically lets you tilt your lens 8 degrees from the sensor plane so you can get an angled focal plane.
Tumblr media
Basically, I can shoot with a shallow depth of field with subjects that are not the same distance from the lens, and still get both in focus.
Notice in my photo that the knight is at an angle and the robot is closer to the lens than she is.
To get all of that in focus with a wide open aperture, I've tilted the lens to the right so that it basically lines up from the knight's leg to the robot's helmet.
Here's a clear explanation of what tilting a lens can do for your photos:
youtube
You can buy a native lens that has tilt/shift for your camera but it will probably cost you a pretty penny. My Sony camera is great for adapting vintage lenses to so I bought a cheap $30 adapter to give me the tilt feature.
Another option is to focus stack, which is taking several exposures at slightly different focal planes and then composting them together in Photoshop or Helicon Focus. I do this a lot when I'm shooting in my studio where I have total control over the light.
But outdoors, where the light changes a lot because of moving clouds or tree branches, I want to get it all in one exposure.
You can also close down your aperture but you obviously lose that shallow depth of field and light.

I also got @official-schwaebisch for Swabian and German stuff.
I am also a mod for @rangersofthewilderness and our lovely discord channel The Wilderness
@lepidopterascientifica is for butterfly and moth photography I do mith my dad. It is however currently on ice, but there are plans to revive it
FAQ What does Waldschrat mean? A Waldschrat is figure from German folklore. "Wald" means forest and "Schrat" is related to the Old Norse "skratti" which is a spirit or sorcerer (hence skogsskratti being Waldschrat in Norse) A Waldschrat is a spirit of the forest. Depending on region and story they are more or less benevolent and more or less capable of magic. They are often depicted as short bearded men, similar to dwarves or gnomes, sometimes with a forest element like moss or lichen in their hair.
Why are you called young Waldschrat if you're almost 30? Because the old Waldschrat is my dad.
What camera do you use? I use a Canon EOS 700D, unless it's super macro closeups, then I use my dad's Canon EOS 90D and Helicon Focus Stacking software

The Muses: Greek Gods and Goddesses
Tumblr media
“We are the muses Goddesses of the arts And proclaimers of heroes”
If your house is anything like mine, you probably have quite a few Disney Movies stashed around. Even before we had Munchkin, Mr Moose and I bonded over our love of movies, songs and quoting lines.
Tumblr media
These 5 ladies are sassy, have some really good songs and are so pretty. Currently, as an adult with an appreciation of History, Mythology and Art, I love the Muses even more.
Tumblr media
We recently added a 3 year old Nubian doe named Calliope to our group, she goes by Callie for short. She’s sassy, tries to be in charge and definitely fits her name.( In fact, if you’re curious about which Alcohol brand it is. There’s a brand of wines called Calliope Wines based out of Canada, so we didn’t even have to change her name!)
Consequently, I wanted to do some more research on this set of ladies. Who are literally referred to as THE Inspirations of Science, The Arts, Astronomy and more.
History Behind The Muses
Tumblr media
The Muses Origin Story(s)
The daughters of Zeus and The Titaness Mnemosyne, goddess of memory, the Muses lived on Mount Olympus entertaining the Gods. Later, they were moved to Mount Parnassus or Mount Helicon depending on who’s research you follow.
However, the other origin story of the Muses is that they are water nymphs who sprung from the four sacred springs on Mount Helicon when Pegasus proceeded to stomp his hooves upon the ground. Most people follow the origin of them being daughters of Zeus.(Which makes the movie Hercules, about their little brother.)
Putting a Face to the Names
Tumblr media
Worshipers of The Muses
Being Goddesses, The Muses had their own following of Worshipers. Scattered all over South and Central Greece, worshipers of The Muses were commonly found at either Mount Helicon in Boeotia and Pieria in Macedonia. Festivals were held frequently all over Greece, full of Poetry Competitions and Dancing and Singing. Pythagoras, the inventor of the Pythagorean Theorem is one of the more famously known followers of the Muses.
Who Are The Muses?
There are 9 Muses total, each with a focus on her area of expertise and inspiration. Some have had children, others have not.
Muse #1-Calliope
Tumblr media
Epic Poetry is a lengthy narrative told in a storytelling manner. In fact, some well known examples include Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey as well as Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy. The Muses and their mother are actually mentioned in both of Homer’s works.
Calliope has several sons depending on the lore. The 2 most known are Orpheus and Linus. Orpheus was the great musical hero of Greek mythology, and Linus was the inventor of rhythm and melody.
Tumblr media
Calliope is known to have been the inspiration for Heroic poems and Rhetoric Arts.
Calliope is physically represented as wearing a gold crown and typically carrying a scroll, book or tablet in her hands.
Muse #2- Clio
Tumblr media
Clio is known as the pro-claimer, glorifier and celebrator of history, great deeds and accomplishments. She is the inspiration and namesake for various modern brands.
Clio has one son, Hyacinth. Story has it; Clio, after reprimanding the goddess Aphrodite for her passionate love for Adonis, was punished by Aphrodite, who made her fall in love with Pierus, king of Macedonia. In spite of that, they bore a son named Hyacinthus, a young man of great beauty who was later killed by his lover, the god Apollo. From his blood sprang a flower (the hyacinth).
Clio is often represented holding an open scroll or sitting by a stack of books.
Muse #3- Erato
Lyric Poetry is poetry expressing personal emotions or feelings, typically spoken in first person. However, lyric poetry is of no relation to the word lyrics when talking about song lyrics.
She is typically represented holding a wreath of myrtle and roses or holding a Kithara(lyre) or a Golden Arrow.( She’s often represented accompanied by Cupid or Eros as well)
Muse #4-Euterpe
She serves as the inspiration for many courses and dialects in language. As well as the inspiration for various instruments.
Muse #5-Melpomene
The inspirations from Melpomene include; tragedy dramas, rhetoric speeches and Melos, the succession of musical tones constituting a melody.
Melpomene is always represented holding a tragedy mask. Other representations can include boots commonly worn by tragedy actors or a knife or sword held in her opposite hand.
Muse #6-Polyhymnia
Sacred Poetry is a collection of works including hymns and other religious texts.
Polyhymnia is the inspiration for Divine Hymns, Mimic Art, Geometry and Grammar.
Her representation is a serious expression, a finger held to her lips in silence and a long cloak or veil.
Muse #7-Terpsichore
She is the inspirations for Dance, the Harp and Education as a whole.
Terpsichore is the other Muse known as Mother of Sirens. One of the most known Sirens, Parthenope, cast herself into the sea after her songs failed to ensnare Odysseus.
Muse #8-Thalia
Idyllic Poetry or Idyll Poems, are typically a short poem, descriptive of rustic life.
Thalia is known as being the inspiration for Comedy Drama, Geometry, Architectural Science and Agriculture.
Muse #9- Urania
She is associated with universal love and astronomical writings. It was said Urania could tell the future by the arrangement of the stars.
Urania is said to have inherited her majesty and power from her father Zeus, and her beauty and grace from her mother.
The “10th” Muse
Little is known about her history and many of her works have been lost to time. There are several theories that she is the inspiration for the word Lesbian and other LGBTQ+ phrases. One of her only completed works that can be found is a poem titled “Ode to Aphrodite”.
The Muses’ Purpose
The Muses were created to help the People and the Gods to forget their troubles and suffering through art, music and poetry. In fact, these 9 women were very close to each other and, subsequently, still serve as inspiration for many of the Arts today.
Mentions of the Muses in Popular Culture
In contrast to Homer and Dante’s works, the Muses are mentioned in a number of modern cultures as well.
My favorites include the Disney movie “Hercules” where the Muses are the musical narrators throughout the movie. My other favorite is the Book series Xanth by Piers Anthony. In Xanth, the Muses live on Mount Parnassus and are one of several residents visited to be asked questions pertaining to their( the visitor’s) quests.
Other examples include:
Rick Riordan’s mythical series: Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Heroes of Olympus and The Trials of Apollo.
South Korean all-female idol group debuted under the name ‘Nine Muses’
The show Charmed, an episode features The Charmed Ones who must protect the Muses from a warlock who is trapping them into a magical ring.
The Muse Calliope is a character in the graphic novel Sandman, by Neil Gaiman.
There are tons of other pop culture references to the Muses, from Animes, Comics, Musical, Movies and Books.
Who Inspires You?
In a word, the Muses are an Inspiration, not only in Ancient Greece but also in the modern realm as well. Who is your favorite Muse? Will you be calling on a Muse next time you need inspiration?

names and thoughts below cut
392/ VA - Spring Track VI (2017) i dont think i can overstate how hard "Green Leaf Zone" goes god DAMN. "Irregular Withdrawal" is insanely good. 22 short D: "the king of orange skyscraper" weird vibes! fun! "boneyard" delightful midi-pushing!! "remove kortex" fascinatingly banger
---
393/ DJ Manny - Hypnotized (2023) good foot funwork title track rly good! my fav i think! it captures what made me fall in love with juke, but stays fresh. "You N You" runnerup fav. also: "Opera" is kinda otherworldly. fun to see!
----
394/ TEMPUS TONIC PHILHARMONIC - FLIPS Vol1 (2021) approaching skeptically… im picky about vocals but also this guy is good. so: "TELEROBOT ROCKAVISION" being familiar with the origs helps me have a fun time "IMPULSE" just a prog journey. hell yeah. "DISECTO" fun take on wobs!
---
395/ LODSB - HELICON 2 (2017) kinda abstract but also not. i rly enjoy the beats within but i do not enjoy the way its organized. like it needs an editor ig? hilights…hmm. specifically 6m into t3. insanely delicious beats. t7 touches all sorts of cool sounds but RE: focus pls?
---
396/ Oriental Magnetic Yellow - 養殖 XO Breeds (1996) feels like a (faux?)live version of a very banger album… …which doesn't rly work for me. esp the vocals. tho i would like to highlight the backing for "Tighten nap". it has an astoundingly 90s-tracker tightness.
---
397/ Unterm Rad - Unfinished Business (2023) this feels like a modern take on the clicky beepy y2k atomtm vibe. its kinda rly rly cool actually highlights? hmm… title track is possibly the hardest one here. try "The Fact Of The Matter" to hear this album's… atonal tones(?)
---
398/ VA - Twonkilation, Vol. 1 (2017) sometimes silly, sometimes banger. "Head Bang" hits both lol "Rubbish" is one of those songs that "goes hard" but is just so silly about it. I'd also like to highlight "Jump Kick". kind of a more serious version of Rubbish lol
---
399/ Remote Guest List - Lonely night lead me close to the edge of enlightenment (2023) softest quietest chill. i love the weird dinks in "Long Exposure". its a very specific feeling!!
---
400/ DJ Shadow - Action Adventure (2023) kind of fascinated with this! it's extremely 80s but not always. "You Played Me" is just an 80s hit. i keep coming back to it lol (idk "when" you'd place "Free For All" but its also a fav) how is "Fleeting Youth" so beautiful
--- December ---
401/ Mistabishi - Suite (2017) alternates between a soft plastic beauty and a hazy haunting dreamscape. subtly emanates late 00s vibes to me. highlights? "Neotame" and "Cyclamate" perhaps
---
402/ Sean Deason - Allegory & Metaphor (2000) delightful mid-90s bleep chillout… in the year two thousand! this is one of those packages where i just tune in and zone out. all nice.
---
403/ Alon Mor - Long Awaited Journey (2017) cinematic to the point where i feel like there's an accompanying movie that im not aware of. the VO stuff though… :\ but. textures. "Presudeos" woah
---
404/ Ikawa - Ikawa I (2023) tracks 1 and 3 are quite nice. both have a distinctly "nighttime" flavor that the even tracks don't. i guess thats what works for me?
---
405/ VA - LSDREAM REMIX SERIES (2023) mixed bag comp, but mostly quite good! hilits: "POTIONS (Kyral x Banko Remix)" really neat soundscape! "OM NAMO (Zen Selekta Remix)" god damn!!! "R.A.V.E (Xotix Remix)" the other R.A.V.E. remix didnt do much for me but this rly rly does
---
406/ Small Export - Small Export I (2023) these really reach into that ukdubstep bag, to my ears! super lovely "Hypertension" might be my fav here

📖TIPS: Focus stacking
Hello, community! It's time for the last part of this month's tips. As you know, we invited @jbarchietto to be our guest tips mod for September. He is showing us how to stack pictures using the focus stacking technique.
"Finally, one last example to show that this technique also works in the Studio. I've set the scene again in depth with the sailboat, which is quite long. My camera doesn't allow me to obtain a depth of field large enough to contain everything. In addition, there are 2 floors separated by glass to show above and below the sea at the same time.
