theCatherines are a Hamburg-based "band" that basically is Heiko Schneider and a revolving cast of supporters. Heiko has been steadily releasing music for nearly the past decade from his Teeny Tiny Studios.

His work has been evolving into more synth based pop (check out the last track "Love Is The Monster"), but there is still plenty of pop in the vein of The Lookyloos, BMX Bandits, Gruff Rhys and R.E.M. (listen to "Ned Rorem Said").

theCatherines have brought me a lot of pop joy over the past 8 years, and "If I Had Known Then" only continues their consistent string of releases.

It's an interesting song, it begins very soft and has a heavy lyrics. In the cinema it doesn't have the power like when you listen to it via headphones.

Oh my god the beginning was beautiful and just the lyrics 👀 It had me wonder if it's about the way humans can be toxic or the whole corona thing

It's a beautiful song and I'm in love, literally it's the way it should be the power in the keyboard and the riffs it had me such close to singing and dancing

It has a big call back to pussy and this whole titel was beautiful revealed 😂

Meine tränen has a big recaller to one dich in the keyboard tunes at 1:54 minutes in and mutter

Oh very very emotional about this song especially the last pieces of lyrics at

It just there's this small pause that let's you "try" to recollect before it crushes you

The main chorus has its recalling at how the main person in this song shouldn't cry yet their mother had died as In failing as the caregives so..

Yet this whole song hurts alot mutter lässt grüßen

Angst

The masterpiece in the beginning and end, the strong drums giving the tone as the riffs give the tone

The lyrics tell stories of the newest what mostly in Germany gets to be happening

Its wonderful yet such creepy at the same time at the most the reverse lines

Over all its a beautiful song and I'm excited to see the mv again 👀

And now we may rest our pants as the anthem of richa- Rammstein sets in

Dicke titten

Beginning with the Oktoberfest vibes and setting in with new riffs

The whole song seeming to have a lot incomming with a lifad song I think 0-0 idk fully yet it's a wonder of art

The middle part as the kapelle plays in with the band is beautiful and has me always at the edge of it

Now into the softer part and Into

Lügen

A very sweet song that has lindemann potential 👀

It starts soft has you in securely hold before dropping you into the soft anthem era of rosenrot

And the heavy sounds of the middle part

We all know that it was more a mental slap to every person how we lie to ourselves but assort of that

I can only say it's great LÜÜÜGEN

The 2:12 mark sets in with great work of the guitars and drums as the keyboard can rest a while

As tills voice has it's great effect

Listening to it now has a lot of power yet from here we go into the depression hall

Adieu

A song that had everyone in tears, deeply taking everyone out at the riffs before letting them all know it's time or not- it's unclear what they talk about

Some say it's about the end of the band

Some other say it's about death

Yet we know one thing... Till is a poet

And the keyboard carries each and every song

Yet 🤕 it hurts

Hearing it at last in the cinema had me cry and if I didn't read about the 2023 four I would have been more broken yet none the last they have done it with or without saving

Hm, let's see, there surely was a lot going on in the name-changing department 😅

Richard has really been busy:

changing his first name from 'Sven' to 'Richard' (the first name of his dad)

changing 'Sven' to 'Zven' (maybe for the ✨coolness factor✨, or Richard Zee Kay sounds better than Richard Es Kay 👀, or to even further distance himself from his given birthname)

changing his last name from 'Kruspe' to 'Kruspe-Bernstein' after his wedding and then back to 'Kruspe' after the divorce

Paul no less, changing his whole name-identity:

interchanging his first name 'Heiko' with his middle name 'Paul'

casually keeping the last name of his ex-wife 'Landers' and leaving his last name 'Hiersche' behind

Flake, who nobody calls by his first name:

he didn't change his name officially, yet used his nickname 'Flake' (which he has since his childhood I believe) since forever, seldomly using his first name 'Christian'

Regarding nicknames we also have Schneider being oftentimes only adressed by his last name and Richard was oftentimes called 'Scholle' by his band mates (his nickname from his childhood which his father gave him') in the earlier days.

Apart from this we have some more peculiar name incidents:

Rammstein called themselves 'Templeprayers' in the very early days of their existence when they recorded their first demo tape (at least they didn't use their band name ideas 'Milch', 'Erde' or 'Mutter' as mentioned here 👀)

Flake and Schneider to this day are still represented in every official booklet (in albums, DVDs, etc.) with additional nicknames: 'Doctor' Flake Lorenz and Christoph 'Doom' Schneider

Till and Oliver/Ollie stayed pretty clear from changing anything regarding their names and are just referred by their names or in Oliver's case 'Olli'. Apart from an occasional 'Orgien-Olli' here and there 😅

Regarding the 'Reesh' nickname: ah that's so sweet and cute! Yeah l was just wondering because I know that at the very least Schneider called Paul Paulchen in an interview, so Paul's nickname definitely exists outside the fandom. But you're right, 'Paulchen' makes sense from the German language perspective, unlike 'Reesh'. Both nicknames are adorable tho 🥰

Yes, Schneider definitely (and i think the others too on occassion) call Paul 'Paulchen' which an affectionate version of his name in German (lucky he changed it from Heiko, because 'Heikochen' or 'Heikolein' don't really have the same ring to it 🥰)

If the Rammstein guys refer to Richard by another name they use his childhood nickname 'Scholle', you know, the one his dad gave him I don't have a link at hand, but i'm sure it has been used by more than one of them in interviews. And his family use it too, which makes sense since he seems not to like his original name 'Sven' to be used, so that name 'Scholle' which they have used so long, will be very natural to them.

I remember in 2022 his brother (who was on ig then) couldn't go to the Berlin concerts (i think he was there this year), posted on his IG "Stolz wie Bolle, Scholle" which i thought was very sweet to use that intimate a name 🥰

("Stolz wie Bolle" is a Berlin phrase meaning 'Very proud' 🥰)

(I also wanna add that I have a friend who's just recently started writing and dang their fic already belongs on this list as well. I fell in love with just the first sentence. So you better sit down and will be ready for this masterpace when it's finished :D )

theCatherines (Hamburg, Germany) just keep getting better and better.  This album has more of a Beach Boys vibe in spots, but I still think the influences of Teenage Fanclub, Belle & Sebastian and late-Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci still stand out.  But the musicianship seems a bit stronger, and the hooks maybe even more memorable.

Heiko Schneider (writes all the songs and plays all the instruments) and Sandra provides beautiful vocals (some lead, some backing).

Maybe even more remarkable is the speed with which theCatherines produce music.  They have produced four winners since December 2018.

This is self released under the Teeny Tiny label (looks to be the name Heiko has given to his home studio).

theCatherines have long been a favorite. As much as I love great pop, I would have been a fool not to fall for Heiko Schneider's Hamburg, Germany based band.

Earlier releases tended to be pop in the vein of Teenage Fanclub or Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. This is a bit groovier , smoother and more loungy. Think Maxwell Farrington and Le SuperHomard or Louis Philippe.

I'm guessing this is being released on Schneider's own Teeny Tiny Tapes.

I saw them in Stockholm from the front row as well, but I didn’t take that many photos. I double high fived Till, Schneider looked at me and threw a drumstick to me, and the highlight was when Paul came down and we held hands and smiled at eachother for a moment. It was so special and a memory I will cherish forever.❤️
