Look, I'm all for using digital wallets to store proof of COVID‑19 vaccination. And I very much prefer that Services Australia went this route rather than build another proprietary app.
But it seems trivial for anyone to fake one of these.
Anyone with an Apple Developer membership or an app like MakePass can make a .pkpass very, very easily. Which is great! I've loved recreating my own tickets as keepsakes in Apple Wallet.
But from the screenshots, at least, I'm not seeing a barcode on the front of these passes or a URL on the back that points back to an official source or register. I don't know how someone is supposed to inspect one of these .pkpass, verify it, and be confident that it is genuine.
It even says so right in Apple's developer documentation: “You are responsible for pass redemption”.
As it stands, it is less secure than a ticket from IMAX Melbourne. It's like a certificate that's written in crayon.
My suggestion:
QR code on the front that encodes a URL as its message.
URL is not a permalink, but one with some sort of unique, expiring slug/signature.
URL links to an App Clip or Instant App, so that a verifier does not need to preinstall a dedicated app, and can be anybody with iOS 14+ and Android 5+.
App Clip checks that the message is authentic and has not expired.
Server periodically generates an updated signature, and pushes that out to update the QR code on the user's .pkpass.
Or longer term, speak with Apple about proper ID cards do it in iOS' Health app.
(I don't have one of these yet myself because I'm still to be vaccinated.)
