Three years into the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. again gave the “lab-leak” theory a major boost, as its Energy Department, citing “new intelligence” but holding “low confidence” in it, joined the FBI in smearing China.
Reported exclusively by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on Sunday, the claim immediately made headlines in major U.S. news outlets. However, its timing and source “only show the low credibility” of the report, analysts said, adding that the new hyping of an old topic is part of the U.S.’ political and information warfare with China.

The leaked Pentagon documents show there are sections of the U.S. ruling class who are worried about the disastrous proxy war in Ukraine -- because it could disrupt the U.S. war buildup against China. That’s the fear being voiced by Tucker Carlson, Glenn Greenwald, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the Pentagon leaker, and their kind.

Make no mistake: the situation in the U.S. is dangerous. Members of oppressed communities are dying. Millions of workers are living on the edge of disaster. But the workers and oppressed, the masses of the people, have not yet been heard from. The working class has the power to turn the situation around – not only to halt the fascist advance but to reverse the setbacks and expand people’s rights.

On April 26, in the “Washington Declaration,” the Biden administration announced that the U.S. would be docking nuclear-armed submarines in South Korea for the first time since the 1980s. The U.S. had withdrawn its open nuclear weapons from South Korea in 1992 with the “Joint Declaration of South and North Korea on the Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula” treaty. Although it was widely believed that the U.S. continued to secretly deploy nuclear weapons in Korea, this move by the Biden administration is a blatant violation of the denuclearization treaty.

New York City’s Times Square was packed on April 10 with a protest against the U.S. military’s latest incursion on Philippine sovereignty.
The Pentagon has sent over 12,000 troops to the Philippines for the annual Balikatan (“shoulder-to-shoulder”) military exercises. Along with them are 5,400 Filipino forces.  These maneuvers ― the largest in their 30-year history ― are aimed at the People’s Republic of China.

In President Joe Biden’s 2023 State of the Union address on Feb. 7, there was one honest moment. Biden said, “I am a capitalist.” Well, he fudged a bit; he should have said, I am a capitalist and a servant to capitalism. But that’s a quibble. Behind all of the rhetoric of “leave nobody behind,” almost everyone — with the exception of the wealthiest 1%, including the arms dealers, big oil and gas, and, of course, the Pentagon — have been left behind.

On January 8, the Financial Times reported that the supreme U.S. Marine Corps commander for Japan gave very direct statements regarding Pentagon’s China strategy. Lieutenant General James Bierman thinks there are “numerous parallels” between Ukraine and Taiwan and admits the U.S. is preparing what he dubbed “a counter-China theater” by strengthening coordination with its regional satellite states.
“The U.S. and Japanese armed forces are rapidly integrating their command structure and scaling up combined operations as Washington, D.C., and its Asian allies prepare for a possible conflict with China such as a war over Taiwan, according to the top Marine Corps general in Japan,” the FT report states.

The U.S. war strategy against the PRC has depended on provoking China to launch a quite justified but costly war to recover its Taiwan province. If the anti-independence KMT party takes power in Taiwan and reopens negotiations with the PRC, then the U.S. “defend independent Taiwan” strategy goes up in smoke. That is why the Biden administration is trying to find any pretext, even as absurd as a weather balloon, to spark a war with China before the current pro-independence regime in Taiwan is kicked out next year.

While an alleged “spy balloon” dominates the news, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin was just in the Philippines to announce the expansion of U.S. bases in anticipation of war with China over Taiwan.

On Nov. 26, local elections were held throughout Taiwan, an island that has always been part of China but since 1949 has been ruled by a fascist leadership driven out of the mainland by the victorious Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Taiwan has since been “protected” by the military U.S. fleet, while Taiwan’s rulers maintained 48 years of martial law and a brutal regime of “White Terror.” The results of the election were a major defeat for the pro-independence DPP and to Washington’s plans to attack the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

Anti-war protests were held in more than 50 cities across the U.S. on the week of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday holiday, Jan. 13 to Jan. 22. “Stop the U.S. war on Donbass, Russia & China! Unite to fight racism, fascism & imperialist war,” declared the banner carried by the Socialist Unity Party in Times Square, New York City, on Jan. 14. Hundreds joined the Times Square rally, which ended with a march down Seventh Ave.

Baltimore: Protest Against U.S. War on Russia & China
Saturday, January 21 - 2:00 p.m.
Corner of MLK Blvd. & Howard Street, Baltimore - Followed by march to indoor event
Baltimore joins the national week of antiwar protest called by UNAC. We will gather at Howard St & MLK Blvd., Saturday, January 21 @ 2 pm. Please don't be late as we will march to indoor venue.
As Martin Luther King, Jr. so correctly reminded us, the U.S. is the greatest purveyor of violence in the world. Since WWII, the US has initiated more than 60 military interventions in foreign countries. The US/NATO proxy war in Ukraine brings the US in direct confrontation with a major nuclear power as does the U.S. provocation against China over Taiwan.
It is extremely important that we build a strong, unified antiwar movement that can break through the media propaganda and censorship and end the US military aggression around the world.
Each of our actions are based on building local connections among various solidarity organizations. A variety of actions are encouraged from demonstrations, teach-Ins, banner drops, chalk-ins to street meetings.
Actions linking ALL the continuing US wars and sanctions is a unifying focus and helps break through the propaganda that saturates each war.
Stop US/NATO Wars and Sanctions
Today working people face escalating costs of food and energy, recession, growing insecurity and attacks on efforts to unionize. The continuing wars and military provocations have brought us to the brink of nuclear war.

For the people of China, the U.S. is very much at the doorstep on a daily basis. And on Nov. 29, the situation escalated. According to a report in the Nov. 30 China Daily, a U.S. guided-missile cruiser illegally entered Chinese waters near the Nansha Islands.
