Anon asker thank you for making me stare at the daughters page I noticed something

Isn’t it odd how Chil calls Meijack and Flertom by their first names, but he calls Puckpatti by her "middle name", Patti instead of Puck? Mei, Fler and Patti are feminine names while Jack, Tom and Puck are masculine, so maybe the gender associated with the names do matter after all? 🤔 Or maybe she’s just dad’s special princess and he calls her by her middle name as a nickname thing

But wait. What if it’s actually customary for each parent to pick one half of their kid’s name? So then maybe Chil is stubborn because Patti was his pick and not Puck lmaoooo

Or maybe for girls, the mother chooses a feminine name and the father chooses a masculine name (or the reverse). I say for girls because Chilchuck and Dandan for instance don’t seem to have a feminine half so maybe this tradition only goes one way. Also though the only half-foot woman names we know are the daughters so it might just be Chilchuck and his wife’s tastes in names too, and ofc this is all speculation

Finished reading through the Dungeon Meshi Adventurer's Bible last night. Very good, very interesting

One book down in my to-read pile... 7 to go lol

But! Something is bothering me about Half-foot naming conventions

The book says their names are like

FirstLast Father(s/z)

Ex. ChilChuck Tims

But Chilchuck's daughters are

Meijack Chils

Flertom Chils

Puckpatti Chils

(Or Chilz, couldn't find a definitive answer on how they write the father's name part)

So they all have different 'Last' names. Jack, Tom, Patti. All sisters with different 'last' names

So is it more like... a middle name? A second name? Then why does the book call it a 'last' name... especially when the father's name comes after??

I like to imagine Marcille deals with her grief of outliving Falin (her wife) and Laois (her platonic soulmate) by looking for new friends that are just as weird/obsessive as the Touden siblings. Through this process of finding generations of weirdos she starts to notice genetic patterns and similarities to the point that she "discovers" autism. She names it Touden syndrome though.

Half-foots are highly discriminated against in the world of dungeon meshi.

They have a difficult time living in places outside of their own territories because places where larger races live aren’t built for their size and crowds can be dangerous.

they’re the least valued race by long lived races because their life spans are the shortest out of all the races. this means that they’re dehumanized and often considered disposable. their superior senses make other races use them as “lures” when hunting succubi/mermaids (usually dying in the process).

They’re often mistaken for/treated like children because of their appearances, and because of this they have a difficult time getting jobs because it’s assumed that they’re immature/can’t handle it.

Because of this, when living outside of Half-foot territories they’re forced to get money by any means necessary (often resorting to crime), so other races stereotype them as “cunning” “greedy” and “manipulative”.

On top of that, members of long lived races who tend to fetishize them.

Even the name “Half-foot” is discriminatory.

Ryoko Kui does a fantastic job at world building.

But even after all of that, im not gonna stop talking about how bad i wanna put Chi Chi in my pocket.

I'm sure somebody already told you this but I love how the Otta Leonardo DiCaprio situation is both sorta wrong and right, because if we take account to mental maturity, you could see it as since halfings age faster more or less start to realise they don't wanna date someone who's like still 27(?) I believe while they already aged to 30+ which is why she has so many breaks ups with so much lmao, it's just a neat detail I've seen so many fans talk about

Here's the Otta extra for those who haven't seen it.

I think it's funny, but yes, Laios Mentions elfs are about 5 times the equivalent in age for tallmen so Otta who is 137 would be around 27, meanwhile half-foot age faster than tallmen, chilchuck who is 29 already has greying hair and is the equivalent of middle age, I saw someone saying half-foot age is around 1.14 times the age of tallmen considering the age of maturity but they honestly seem to age faster, in dungeon meshi life expectancy for tallmen is 60 and for half-foot is only 50, even orcs seem to live longer, to 55, even thought they probably have a rougher lifestyle, anyway, yes while otta is around over 1/4 of her lifespan a 30 year old half-foot girlfriend would be over half way thru hers, they would be in wildly different life-stages. imagine being in your 40's dating a seemingly eternally young criminal lmao. They probably get over that type of excitement too.

Can't really blame Otta for wanting to break up with them either since the half-foot would be way past her current life-stage by the time they're 30, differently from actual dicaprio, I just like to tease cause its funny. But the way Ryoko Kui really thought about social implications of this type of relationship is really fun. There's the inherent tragedy of such a relationship since one of them will outlive the other many times over, but there's also a social stigma.

I like how Senshi grows as a character and no longer views Chilchuck as a child once he finds out that Chilchuck has an ex-wife and kids of his own. He now feels embarrassed by his past ignorance regarding half-foots.
