GALTx eNews: October Is Greyhound Awareness Month!
October is Greyhound Awareness Month! We imagine most of our readers are fairly aware of Greyhounds and their quirky idiosyncrasies. But, do you ever have someone ask you about your Greyhounds and fumble for a quick response? We know we sometimes do, so here are some suggestions to help spread awareness this month:
When they aren’t sleeping, they are the fastest dog breed, reaching speeds of 45 miles per hour;
Most Greyhounds come with ear tattoos that provide information about their litter and birth date;
Greyhounds registered with the National Greyhound Association can trace their pedigree back generations to the 1800s in England;
They are the only dog breed mentioned in the Bible;
Greyhounds have a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years, longer than most large breeds;
Greyhounds come in 18 recognized colors and many variations of those colors, but gray is one of the rarest;
Greyhounds can see clearly for up to a kilometer (.6 of a mile), but might not notice a close by rabbit that isn’t moving;
Greyhounds’ blood chemistry is significantly different from other dog breeds; and
Most Greyhounds make great blood donors for other injured or sick dogs because they have a universal blood type.
Last but not least, Greyhounds still need to find forever homes. Visit our Available Greyhounds page today to see if your next best friend is waiting for you.

I have to say, I just started casually watching ofmd after basically watching it through you guys. I am already spoiled. I thought there would be no surprises. I am already aware of the best jokes, the foot touch, the plot beats. You can become an expert on any show simply by scrolling past gifs of it for months.
However, NONE of you prepared me for this little guy here:
Tumblr media
It is profoundly obvious visually, through dash osmosis and general visible evidence, that this is a little man with a lot wrong with him. but what you cannot grasp from gifs is his voice. His voice is amazing: I did NOT expect it: I cannot describe it: the actor chews on his lines like a menacing guinea pig. It is like hearing Kermit the Frog trying to strangle his own puppeteer. Like someone has trapped a vengeful spirit in a balloon and is allowing it to speak prophecy, but only in short, squeaky bursts. No, I can’t describe it at all. I was expecting the character to be “scrungly” and was aware that many of you wish to place him in a jar and shake him vigorously, but I didn’t know he sounded like something that would cause all greyhounds in hearing distance to instantly go cross-eyed and launch themselves into outer space. He! Is! Scrofulous!!!!
If you watched the show on its first principles you probably wouldn’t have noticed this because you would have accepted it as part of the full sensory experience of the character, but if you have only encountered it as gifs for the best part of a year, the sound of this chap is one HELL of a shock . Definitely adds to the flavor. Enhances the sensory experience. Sign on today.

After my third Richmond game, April and I found ourselves once again having dinner with the Greyhounds at Ola’s. This time, Roy Kent and I sat with some of the players, who I was pleased to watch flirt with April; my beautiful assistant and best friend deserved the attention of hot, rich athletes, I decided.
While flirting with professional soccer players seemed to come easy to April, it felt like Roy and I were still figuring out how to flirt with each other. We sat close enough that our shoulders were touching, I flashed him plenty of coy smiles, and he made a point to whisper in my ear every now and then- although it was usually something like “Can I fucking leave now?” But still, if we were going to convince people that this was real, we’d probably have to step things up soon.
I remembered something Keeley had texted me the day before- we needed another date, and soon.
“What’re you doing tomorrow?” I murmured, loud enough for only Kent to hear.
He grunted and shifted in his seat. “Why?” After I simply narrowed my eyes at him, he sighed. “Keeley texted you too, hmm?” He sighed, shoveling another bite into his mouth. “What were you thinking?”
I thought for a moment, trying to avoid something simple like dinner, where we’d have to talk to each other and act like two people who were interested in each other. “Want to go on a picnic? We could bring a couple of books. Wouldn’t have to say a word to each other.”
Roy blinked, clearly processing what I’d just said; I could practically hear gears whirring before he finally spoke. “Sounds fucking perfect.”
Satisfied that I’d done my part, I turned my attention back to my delicious meal; if I got nothing else out of this fake relationship, at least I’d be well-fed for the next few months.
“Hey there!” Keeley Jones plopped down on my other side, smiling broadly at me.
Suddenly very aware of the eyes of the team on me, the way they’d been the night I “met” Keeley the first time I visited Ola’s, I returned her smile with one of my own, going so far as to playfully bump her shoulder with mine.
“Thank you again for inviting us to sit with you and Rebecca,” I gushed, and I really meant it; if I was going to be hanging out at Nelson Road, it was nice to do so in a comfortable suite with champagne in my hand. “It was actually really fun.”
Keeley’s smile widened; it was warm and friendly and genuine, making it obvious why everyone seemed to adore her. “I’m so glad you enjoyed yourself! We’ll have to get you a Kent kit now, eh? I’ve got an old one you could have if you like.”
I swore Roy stiffened next to me. “That’s alright,” I assured her. “I think April was going to order one for me to wear to their next game.” I turned to Roy with a shrug. “Gotta look the part, right?”
Roy mumbled something about getting another beer and stood, pausing only to briefly touch my shoulder; I ignored how warm his touch was. Once he was gone, I turned my attention back to Keeley, whose eyes were following Roy with something that looked a lot like pity.
“How’re you two getting on?” she asked in a low voice, scooching closer.
The only response that felt right was a shrug. “It’s fine,” I murmured. “Definitely working on getting used to each other. Going from complete strangers to dating is… a unique way of getting to know someone.” She seemed to be waiting for me to continue, so I added, “We’re going on a picnic tomorrow. I told him we could bring a couple books, that way we don’t have to just stare at each other the whole time.”
The corner of Keeley’s mouth tugged upwards knowingly. “Now that is a perfect idea,” she said, eyes shifting back to Roy as he approached, beer in hand. “Absolutely perfect.”
~
“How’s here?”
Roy grunted in response and dropped the picnic basket to the ground. Ten minutes felt like far too long to look for the “perfect” picnic spot, but Keeley had been kind of specific; it needed to be a public enough spot that they would be seen, but secluded enough that it didn’t look like they were trying to be seen.
He was beginning to wish they’d just gone to the pub again; at least then he could have a pint.
Instead, he helped spread out the blanket they’d brought with them and opened up the picnic basket, the one Keeley had dropped off at his house early that morning and that his date- when the fuck would he have to start saying girlfriend?- had loaded with lunch and snacks. He couldn’t help but wonder what kind of food she’d packed. Probably something trendy and vegan-y. Was she a vegan? Roy didn’t fucking know. But she was young and trendy and pretty and-
“Here.” She shoved something wrapped in white paper into his hands. “Should we eat first?”
Roy gingerly unwrapped the bundle, immediately recognizing its contents. “Is this a fucking kebab?”
She shrugged, already chomping on a bite of her own kebab. “Yeah. That a problem?”
Ignoring the annoyance in her voice, Roy took a bite; fuck, he’d know that flavor anywhere. “Where’d you get this?”
“That kebab place you like.” Her tone was casual, as if it didn’t matter. “I asked Keeley what you like, she sent me the address.” After eating another bite, she shrugged. “The owner asked me to bring in a headshot next time, said he’d give me free kebabs for life.”
“Are you fucking kidding me?” Roy’s grip tightened on his kebab; he ate there at least once a week and still was never given so much as a discount. But she goes in once and gets kebabs for life? Fucking hell. Well, at least he’d get to take advantage for the next few months. Maybe he would benefit from this charade after all.
Still munching on her kebab, she reached into the bag she’d brought and pulled out a book, settling herself into a comfortable position before opening it. Roy took the hint and grabbed his own book out of the picnic basket, a murder mystery his sister had given him for his birthday. He glanced up over the top of his book to get a glimpse of what she was reading.
“The Great Gatsby?” he asked, raising his thick eyebrows.
She nodded, her gaze still on her book. “It’s my favorite,” she said simply. After a moment, her eyes flickered up to meet Roy’s. “I try to read it every year.”
Not sure why he was still talking, Roy sat up a little straighter. “Every year? I mean, yeah, it’s a fucking good book, but why would you read it every fucking year?”
“It’s… familiar.” She set the book down, now fully looking at Roy. “Everyone is desperate to be at Gatsby’s parties, to be surrounded by his wealth and glamor, to drink his booze and enjoy his hospitality.” She frowned, eyes flittering back to the book. “But then only a handful of people attend his funeral. Once the party is over, no one cares about him anymore.” She looked back at Roy. “That’s going to be me, isn’t it?”
Roy was speechless. Something about the softness in her eyes was so familiar, almost like looking in a mirror. That’s going to be me, isn’t it? How many times had Roy mumbled something just as cynical and broken? How many people- reporters, women, friends, even family- had stopped calling once he slowed down? How many more once he stepped off the field for the last time? In her eyes Roy could see the same dejection and fear of loneliness that had nestled itself inside Roy’s chest these last few years. It was something hard to explain, something one could only understand if they’d felt it deep in their souls. And it seemed to be something they both shared.
But instead of admitting to understanding how she felt and allowing her to glimpse behind his scowls and hard expressions, Roy simply shifted on the blanket and bit off his lunch. “Fucking hell. Are you always some fucking tortured poet, sunshine?”
Her face faltered for only a fraction of a second, but it was long enough for Roy to want to kick himself for ruining the moment. She quickly recovered, picking her book back up and burying herself back into Jay Gatsby’s empty affluence. “Read your fucking book, Kent,” she mumbled, flipping a page absently. “There’s a photographer in those bushes.”
Sure enough, when Roy glanced around out of the corner of his eye, he could just make out the familiar sight of a camera lens.

“So, how’s it going with Roy Kent?”
Lanie looked perky as we sat in her office. My guard was immediately up; a perky publicist was never a good sign, I’d learned. It usually meant they had something rotten to tell you.
Anticipating whatever it was, I slouched into my seat, ready to narrow my eyes or scowl at a moment’s notice. “It’s fine,” I mumbled. “Keeley Jones said our picnic date got a lot of positive attention, and she said the Greyhounds’ viewership has skyrocketed since I started attending matches. So, it looks like we’re doing our jobs pretty well. Is my press looking good?”
Lanie nodded, eyes on her phone. “Good, good,” she said absently, as if she wasn’t really listening.
“Lanie?” I called.
She looked back up at me. “Well, with the Roy Kent stuff, you’ve got plenty of attention, and it looks like people are excited to see you in a new relationship, especially with someone who looks like him.” She ignored the way I wrinkled my nose. “But, uh, this morning I got wind of something that might take a little attention away from you and Roy.” She handed me her phone with a grimace.
The photo was kind of blurry, but I knew the two figures immediately. Everett- my most recent ex- nuzzling close to Cameron, the woman who had once called herself my best friend until she found out that a boyfriend of hers hit on me. Even though I had clearly rebuffed him and told Cam right away, she very publicly ended our friendship and even more publicly accused me of trying to steal her man. And now, irony of ironies, there she was, attached to my ex-boyfriend like the leech Lanie had always warned me she was.
“Lovely,” I finally snorted, gingerly handing the phone back to Lanie. “Do we think it’s real or just for attention? I know Cam’s new show starts filming soon.”
Lanie rolled her eyes. “Please, they’re not clever enough to pull off something calculated. If anything, he’s trying to make you jealous and she’s trying to get revenge on you. Idiots.” She sighed and dropped her phone onto the coffee table. “But, of course, your name’s being dragged into it. The phrase ‘love triangle’ has been trending on Twitter all morning.”
“Gross.”
“Agreed.” Lanie rolled her neck, something she often did when she was stressed. “I’ve been on the phone with Keeley this morning, and we both agree it’s time to step things up with you and Roy. Go public, make things official. Attend an event together that’s not a Richmond dinner.”
How much further could I slouch before I ended up lying down on the couch? “What event did you guys have in mind?”
“Your annual fabulous karaoke party!”
Keeley Jones strutted into the office with Roy right behind her. She greeted Lanie and I each with friendly hugs and kisses on cheeks; Roy, on the other hand, opted for short nods to each of us. Lanie stood and motioned for Roy to take her seat beside me; we shuffled awkwardly to ensure our knees wouldn’t bump.
Once we were all settled, I turned to Keeley, who now stood next to Lanie. “My karaoke party?” I echoed, feeling my stomach churn.
The “party” was the main fundraiser I threw every year for my nonprofit back home; it was near and dear to my heart, incredibly personal, and my favorite night of the year.
And now I’d have to share it with Roy Kent.
Sensing my unease, Lanie smiled at me, one of her reassuring smiles, the kind she always had for me after a bad bit of press. “It’ll be great publicity,” she pointed out. “You’ll probably raise even more than you did last year. Can you imagine how many people will register for the livestream? Especially if he sings,” she added, pointing at Roy.
“Sing?” the manager practically spat. “I have to sing at this party?”
With a sigh that even I knew was overdramatic, I turned to look at him, taking in his scowl and furrowed brow. “It’s a karaoke party,” I explained slowly, remembering how condescending he’d been the very first time we’d spoken in front of the elevator at Keeley’s office. “People pay a pretty penny for a ticket, there’s a paid livestream of all the singing, and I always release a new song, with all the proceeds going to my nonprofit. It’s… kind of a big deal.”
When Roy frowned, I could practically see the gears turning in his head as he processed this new information. After a moment of silence, he opened his mouth. “You should invite some of the guys. They’d definitely fucking sing.”
Keeley bounced happily at Roy’s suggestion. “That would be perfect! And it would really show the two of you becoming part of each other’s worlds too.” She quickly tapped at her phone, somehow lighting up even brighter. “And it’s a bye week for them!” She shot me a wink. “Looks like the universe is really lining things up for us, hmm?”
All I could do was smile weakly, my mind spinning from learning about my ex-boyfriend and ex-friend becoming an item and finding out that I’d have to spend my favorite night of the year with a man who had barely glanced at me since that night we played darts together. I made up my mind to ask Lanie if my reputation really needed this much help or if she, as usual, was overreacting. Just as soon as Roy and Keeley left, I decided. Surely, with the numbers my upcoming tour sales was doing, along with the amount of people already signed up for the fundraiser’s livestream, and with all this social media attention, could dating a former soccer star turned grumpy coach really help that much?
“Oi, sunshine, your place or mine?”
Sunshine. Roy’s gruff use of the name he’d mumbled during our picnic had me snapping back to attention, out of my planned objections to my publicist. I stared at Roy blankly, trying to imagine what in the hell I’d missed that had him prompting what I thought he might be prompting- especially in front of his ex-girlfriend.
“She was zoning out,” Lanie quickly explained as she threw an M&M at me, her usual way of bringing me back to attention. “We want you two to have a sleepover,” she said loudly, as if she was repeating herself- which she probably was. “Something simple and domestic. Something you can post on your socials so continue this little soft launch. Something to help make things believable.”
Roy nodded. “Keeley says just being seen in public isn’t enough to make it seem real. We’ve got to really sell this shit.” He scowled at me. “So, your place or mine?”
Okay, so that made a lot more sense than what I’d feared he was asking me. “My place,” I said, clearing my throat. “You can come over to my place.”
~
Roy let out a low growl as he pulled up to the front gate of the address on his phone. He quickly punched in the gate code she’d sent him, relieved he didn’t have to call her to let him in, and drove up the short driveway.
Her house wasn’t what he’d imagined; with the money he- and the rest of the world- knew she was worth, Roy’d figured she lived in a fucking castle or some modern monstrosity. Instead, he walked in the moonlight to the door of a sweet two-story house, blinking as he read the doormat that declared “There’s no place like home”. He heaved his duffel bag over his shoulder and sharply knocked on the door, sucking his breath between his teeth. Another step in this weird, weird fucking situation he found himself in.
When the door opened, Roy instinctively took a step back, forcing himself to look her in the eye. She nodded curtly to him, gesturing for him to enter the house. “Kent,” was her simple greeting.
He returned the curt reception with a grunt of his own and followed her inside and into her sitting room, marveling at how the house did not match his expectations. He’d figured it would be something like Keeley’s place, all bright and pink and stylish with fluffy pillows everywhere. But everything was simple and cozy, and there were a lot more photos than he expected. Her family, he assumed, as his eyes lingered on a photo of her with a couple of pre-teen kids. In one corner was a piano, one he figured she used a lot, and one wall was completely covered with a bookshelf, which housed a large and clearly well-used library. It reminded Roy a bit of his own place if he was being honest. Simple, homey, and probably a refuge from a life lived in the public eye.
Before he could ask about the framed drawing that was clearly done by a child around Pheobe’s age, something brushed against Roy’s leg. “What the fuck?” he bellowed, looking down to see a cat staring back up at him.
“That’s Sydney,” his host explained, picking up the animal. “Syd, say hi to Roy.” She kissed the top of the cat’s head. “Apparently we need to get used to him,” she stage-whispered into the cat’s fur.
Roy snorted as he focused his gaze on the cat. He could almost appreciate the sarcasm in her voice- almost. Instead, he gestured to his duffel bag. “Where can I set this down? Are you sticking me in the backyard, or do I have to sleep in my car?”
With something resembling a smirk on her lips, she set the cat down and once again beckoned for Roy to follow her. “I’ve got a guest room,” she assured him as she led him down the hall. She let Roy enter the room alone, choosing to linger in the hallway and watch him drop his bag to the floor. She cleared her throat as the cat- Sydney- caught up with them. “I ordered a pizza,” she mumbled, shifting her weight. “We could, I don’t fucking know, watch a movie or something until, well...”
Right. Fucking sleepover. “Yeah, sounds fine,” Roy muttered, staring at the cat. He’d probably spend most of his night looking at the animal, he realized. “I’m just gonna… throw on some fucking sweats. If that’s alright.”
She nodded, her cool demeanor reappearing. “Do your thing,” she said airily. “Let me know if you need anything.” After giving Roy a firm, businesslike nod, she was gone.
With a shake of his head, Roy quickly threw on some sweats and a t-shirt, trying not to put too much thought into what the evening ahead held. Was this really necessary? Did the other fake couples Keeley knew- which she assured him was quite a few- have to go to such lengths? Knowing Keeley, she was probably just trying to push Roy’s buttons, see how far she could take this shit before Roy snapped.
But again, he was trying to prove to her that he was willing to go above and beyond for her. Anything for Keeley, he reminded himself as he trudged back into the sitting room.
He plopped himself down on the couch, where Sydney the Cat was already perched and watching Roy with narrowed cat eyes. Jamie had once compared Roy to a cat during a team dinner, he remembered. Not very social, easy to annoy, but incredibly loyal and affectionate once they decided to let someone in. Keeley had found the comparison hilarious and proceeded to call Roy “Fluffy” for the rest of the night. He chuckled to himself at the memory; he should send Keeley a picture of Sydney and let her know he remembered the joke. He always remembered Keeley’s jokes.
As he reached for his mobile, a voice came from the direction of what he assumed was the kitchen. “You eat pepperoni, right? I forgot to ask.”
The most glamorous popstar in the world strolled back into the sitting room holding a cardboard box in her hands with two bottles of beer balanced on top. Instead of her usual dresses or fashionable outfits Roy and the rest of the world was used to seeing her in, she wore a particularly tiny pair of sleep shorts and a Greyhounds sweatshirt- the one Roy had seen her wear to their matches lately.
Roy wasn’t blind. He knew she was a stunning woman, whether she was on an album cover or, apparently, in her pyjamas. And if he’d bothered to give the matter even two seconds of thought, he would’ve noted that he rather liked her figure, especially when she looked so comfortable and domestic. But Roy couldn’t think about that. Not when he heard Keeley’s name come out of her mouth.
“Keeley said to make sure we both post on our socials,” she was saying, either missing or ignoring the way Roy’s eyes lingered for a moment too long on her bare legs. “Why I couldn’t just send you something to post is beyond me.” She set the pizza down on the coffee table and plopped onto the couch, a respectable distance from Roy’s spot. “Like, is you coming over really, truly necessary?”
Roy snorted and made himself busy with a beer. “I was thinking the same thing,” he admitted. “But Keeley’s always got a method to her fucking madness. You learn to just fucking go with it.” Deciding he needed to look at something that wasn’t the way she was stretching out comfortably on her couch, Roy stood abruptly and meandered over to her bookshelf. “You read a lot?” he said, scanning her collection more closely now.
“When I can,” came her breezy answer. “I’d love to say I’ve read everything on that shelf, but that’s mostly a collection of books I want to read.”
“Maybe we can do more reading dates.” Roy didn’t know what the fuck made him say that; it just slipped out as he stared at a particularly worn copy of The Bell Jar. When he glanced over his shoulder, he was surprised to see a smile on her face.
She shrugged and sipped her own beer. “Sure, Kent. Sounds good.”
Ignoring whatever feeling was forming in his chest, Roy returned to the shelf, recognizing some names and finding himself curious about others. Finally, he spotted a stack of games on the bottom shelf. He noted that there were about four versions of the same game. “You like Scrabble?” he blurted out, desperate to put distance between himself and his picnic suggestion.
“Love it,” she laughed. “When my parents came to the States from Mexico, they were each pretty young and worked really hard to learn English. They wanted to make sure all of their kids were fluent in English, so in our house we were always reading and playing games like Scrabble.” Her smile became a smirk. “My youngest brother refuses to play with me anymore because I kind of win a lot.”
The competitive streak that made Roy a football legend started to bubble up in his chest. “That so?” He picked up one of the boxes and brought it over to the coffee table. “Let’s see, then.”
~
“You can’t put that word!” I cackled, throwing my head back when I saw the word Roy was putting on the board.
Roy smirked and put the ‘C’ down with finality. “I absolutely fucking can. And I did so…” He shrugged. “Gimme my points, sunshine.”
After updating Roy’s score, I snapped a photo of the board. “That’s going on Instagram,” I warned him with a smirk. I quickly shared the picture and put my phone down, trusting that Lanie would text me later about the post blowing up.
Tumblr media
We finished one game, then another, and started a third. We didn’t talk much, but it didn’t feel as awkward as those first few dinners with the Greyhounds. Sydney laid close to Roy, clearly already used to him, and I couldn’t deny the warm feeling in my chest when I saw him absently stroke her fur between turns. Maybe we’ll be friends, I thought fondly as I put down the tiles for my latest turn. Real, actual friends.
“Calamitous?” Roy read, wrinkling his nose. “What the fuck is calamitous? Is that even a word?”
I smirked and sipped my beer. “It absolutely is!” I stood and strolled over to my bookshelf, returning with the Scrabble dictionary my sister had given me a couple years ago. “Look it up.”
After shooting me a suspicious look, Roy flipped through the book; his scowl told me he had indeed found calamitous.
“It’s a good word,” I said as I sat back down. “One of my favorites. I’ve just been waiting for the right time to put it in a song.”
His gaze turned thoughtful as he stared at his letter tiles. “You written anything lately?” Before I could answer, he opened his mouth again. “You said something about a song for your fundraiser thing. It’s a new one, right?”
I nodded, squirming a bit as I thought about the song, one I’d been pouring a lot of myself into. “Yeah. I always release a new song after the party.” My eyes fell so Sydney, curled up close to Roy. “Want to hear a bit?”
“Abso-fucking-lutely.”
His almost silly answer was enough to get me to my feet and retrieving my guitar from the extra room I often worked in. When I came back, Roy sat up straight, his gaze trained on my guitar as I settled on the couch.
“It’s called ‘Nothing New’,” I explained as I began to strum my guitar. “Here’s the chorus.”
Lord, what will become of me
Once I've lost my novelty?
I've had too much to drink tonight
And I know it's sad, but this is what I think about
And I wake up in the middle of the night
It's like I can feel time moving
How can a person know everything at 18 but nothing at 22?
And will you still want me when I'm nothing new?
When I finally looked at Roy, his mouth was agape, and he was blinking rapidly.
“Fucking hell,” he whispered. “That’s good. That’s really fucking good.” He shook his head. “Reminds me of that shit you said the other day, about Gatsby and funerals and all that.” He sighed, a heavy, sad sound, and his voice was almost impossible to hear. “Fucking reminds me of me.”
I didn’t know what to say to that; I vaguely knew the story of Roy’s injury, the one that ended his career, and Dani had said something about it taking a while for Roy to find his way back to Richmond after his retirement. But I didn’t think Roy was the kind of person who liked to talk about anything, let alone what was probably the worst time in his life. So instead, I watched him stare stonily at my silent guitar, not saying a word when he stood abruptly, something I was quickly getting used to seeing.
“I should fucking sleep,” he mumbled, taking care to grab a couple of empty bottles. “Gotta be out of here early for training. Thanks for the pizza. And the beer.” He nodded to my guitar. “And the song.” After nudging Sydney gently with his foot, Roy turned on his heel and disappeared into the kitchen; I didn’t move from my spot until I heard the guest room door shut with finality.

Roy sighed as he sat down in front of the assembled reporters, all waiting to pounce on him after a hard-earned Greyhound victory. As always, Keeley stood in the back of the room, an encouraging smile on her face, the kind of smile that always gave Roy the strength to tackle what was probably his least favorite part of the job.
He answered several questions about the match- probably one of their best of the season, if he was being honest with himself- before the topic he was dreading finally reared its head.
“Coach Kent,” some wanker from a publication Roy couldn’t be bothered to remember called out, “care to say anything about the rumors concerning your latest fling?”
Instinctively, Roy bared his teeth and squared his shoulders before leaning forward, ready to growl out, “No.” However, a raised eyebrow from Keeley had him taking a deep breath; she’d trained him for this, he reminded himself. He knew what he was supposed to say. “We’re just… spending time together,” he said, trying to keep his voice light. “It’s been… nice, getting to know each other.” When he looked at Keeley, she was giving him a big thumbs up; it was enough to have him continue. “She’s different than I expected,” he added, nodding more to himself than anyone else.
“How’d you two meet?”
He coughed into his hand; he knew how to answer this, too. “She’s good friends with Dani Rojas,” he explained, wondering if it sounded as rehearsed as it felt. “So, she came to a match and then came out with the team afterwards. We danced a little, and then she gave me her phone number.” Again, Keeley smiled encouragingly. “It’s been kind of fucking cool, having her at our matches. She’s really embraced the Richmond way.” That last bit was something Keeley had come up with; normally, Roy would think it sounded incredibly lame and positively cheesy. But, since Keeley was the mastermind, he didn’t complain one bit.
Another reporter spoke up. “Will you be at her upcoming fundraiser? The karaoke party is legendary.”
“Yeah, I’ll be there,” Roy answered with what he hoped was a good-natured smirk. “Get enough drinks in me, I might even fucking sing.” For a brief moment, the chuckles that filled the room reminded Roy of how this room sounded when Ted was there; he hadn’t realized he actually missed that sound.
“Have you heard her new song?” The voice was hopeful, as if Roy was about to give everyone a big scoop, let the sports reporters have something the gossip columnists would kill for.
For the first time since the press conference began, Roy’s smile was real. “I’ve heard a little,” he admitted. “And I won’t tell you a fucking thing, except that it’s fucking brilliant.”
Roy maneuvered around a few more questions- Would she be attending more Richmond matches?  (“Hopefully.”) Would Roy be going to any of the shows during her upcoming tour. (“We’ll see.”) Who won their Scrabble tournament? (“No fucking comment.”)- before he was finally set free. He and Keeley reconvened in his office, making sure no one else was around before assessing how Roy’s first official acknowledgement of the “relationship” had gone.
“You did a great job,” Keeley assured him from her perch on the edge of his desk, a spot she’d taken countless times. “Might be the most charming I’ve ever seen you at a presser, Roy. Looks like she’s really rubbing off on you.” Her wink had Roy’s insides squirming. “Did you really hear the song already?”
“Yeah,” Roy mumbled, slouching in his seat. “She played some for me the other night, during our sleepover.” He surprised even himself by not rolling his eyes at the word sleepover. “It’s fucking sad,” he continued, completely unprompted. “But really beautiful. Nothing like the fluffy stuff you hear on the radio.”
Keeley gently tossed a stray paperclip at Roy. “Oi, I like her fluffy stuff! And so does Phoebe, I might add.” Her smile widened. “Your niece wants to know when you’re introducing her to your girlfriend, by the way. It’s all she talked about at our last Pheebs and Keels Day.”
Roy shook his head. “Oh no,” he scoffed, folding his arms. “Not fucking happening. Last thing I need is for her to get attached. Look what happened with-”
Fuck.
The smile disappeared from Keeley’s face. “Right,” she said quietly, looking down at her hands. “Yeah, might not be the best idea, eh?” After a moment, she perked up again, reigniting the energy in the room. “Have you two kissed yet?”
“What the fuck Keeley?” Roy hissed, looking around the obviously empty office; she’d sure recovered quickly from the awkward moment he’d caused.
She shrugged, clearly unfazed. “You’re officially together and are starting to go out in public as a couple. It’ll look funny if you don’t start being affectionate soon. I figured maybe you two’d gotten it out of the way already, so your first kiss isn’t in front of the cameras."
Shit. Roy hadn’t even started to think about how they’d act now that things were “official”. Had she?
“Don’t fucking worry about it,” Roy mumbled, wondering why he was blushing so furiously. “I’m a forty-year-old man, Keeley. I know how to kiss a woman.”
“Yeah, but she’s not just any woman,” Keeley pointed out as she stood. “Just something to think about.” She paused, studying Roy’s face carefully. “You really did do a good job in there, Roy. I almost believed you for a second, smiling and blushing as you gushed about that gorgeous girl.” Her smile returned, completely full of mischief. “Anything you want to share?”
Roy narrowed his eyes at his ex and threw the paper clip she’d tossed at him earlier. “Fuck off, Keeley,” was all he managed before the giggling blonde strutted out of the office. He looked down at his phone to check where the guys would be going after the match; after all, he was expected to be there with-
“Hey there!”
Roy looked up at the sound of Keeley’s cheery voice. His “girlfriend” came into view, smiling tightly at Keeley as they squeezed by each other through the doorway. The popstar saluted as she entered the office.
“Hey, Kent,” she hummed, pausing by the door and leaning against the frame. “I was thinking, want to ride to the restaurant together?”
He heard what she said. He knew he had. But the only thing he could focus on was her mouth, the same mouth that had left lipstick marks on his cheek and had formed a smile when she won two Scrabble games in a row. The same mouth he’d have to kiss soon. He’d kissed plenty of women; hell, he’d more than kissed plenty of women. And those were kisses he’d actually meant.
So why the fuck did his palms feel sweaty at the thought of fake-kissing this woman?
“Kent? Kent?”
Oh fucking hell, she’d caught him staring.
Roy cleared his throat and stood up, pocketing his mobile. “Alright, yeah. Let’s go.”
She narrowed her eyes at him as they walked out of the office. “You alright?”
“Yeah. I’m fucking fine.” Roy’s hand balled into a fist at his side as he fought the urge to clear his throat again.
“Okay then.” They walked silently down the hall, looking nothing at all like a couple in love. Finally, she bumped him with her shoulder. “Saw your press conference,” she said, her voice light and teasing.
Roy nodded, wondering if his face looked as warm as it felt. “What’d you think?”
When he glanced at her, she was staring straight ahead- and smiling. “You told them you liked the song.” Her voice could only be described as pleased.
“Well, yeah,” Roy mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck. “It’s the truth. It’s… it’s really fucking good. I can’t wait to hear the rest.”
She opened her mouth to say something, then closed it again. Finally, she looked at him, her face serious now. “Hey, there’s some reporters hanging around outside. D’you think we should hold hands or something?”
Roy’s eyes flickered down to her outstretched hand before returning to her face; she gazed at him with raised eyebrows, waiting for his answer.
“Probably a good idea,” he murmured. With that, he took her hand in his, giving it a small squeeze as they walked out of the Dog Track.
He kept her hand in his as they walked through the parking lot; while his eyes stayed trained on his giant black car, she smiled sweetly at the couple of reporters who called their names and even offered a small wave in their direction. Roy held her door open and helped her climb inside, closing the door once she was settled. Once he was in the driver’s seat, he resisted the urge to grab her hand; old habit from dating Keeley, he told himself.
Still, he couldn’t help but wonder why his hand felt so cold without her fingers intertwined with his.

Eggsy x sister!reader - not the same
Tumblr media
Hey saw you wanting Eggsy so I was wondering if you could do one where Reader and Eggsy are brother and sister (with Reader being the oldest) and she adopts a disabled pup (or a normal pup if you prefer) for Eggsy when she found out about him losing his pug. - Anon 💜
Loosing JB was hard on your brother and you knew that, growing up he didn’t have much that he could call his own.
You did what you could for him, and he knew that, and when he got JB it was like his whole world had gotten better.
Though he explained he couldn’t tell you what he did for work, he did tell you that’s how he came across his little pug, that unfortunately wasn’t a bulldog like he thought.
But he adored that dog to no end.
So it tore you up to see how heartbroken he was over the loss of his little best friend, and he couldn’t bare to be alone.
“Hey Eggsy?”
He looked up from your sofa and you smiled softly at him.
“I need to pick something up I’ll be back in soon, will you be alright?”
“Yeah, yeah I’ll be alright go ahead.”
You smiled and nodded, leaving the flat.
You had arranged to pick up a dog from a shelter that nobody else wanted to adopt, and you couldn’t bare to see the sweet thing without a home.
So that’s where you went.
You did some dog shopping first, then went to pick up the the grey hound.
“He’ll need go to a vets once a month, but he’s wonderful and ever so sweet.” The man said.
“He seems it, he’s so trusting.”
The greyhound sniffed your hands as he sat in front of you, tail thumping the ground a little bit.
“Just so I know, you are aware that Bolt here is deaf?”
“I am.”
The man nodded his head, handing you some paperwork to fill out.
Once you were done, you led Bolt back to your car to take him home.
He was so curious about everything, so you took him for a little walk down the street before bringing him back into your flat, taking the lead off.
“Eggsy?!”
“Yeah?”
He came in from the kitchen and stopped when he saw the brown down sniffing around the hallway.
He smiled, crouching down as he held out his hand towards Bolt.
“Well hey there, who’re you?” He asked.
“His names Bolt, he is deaf, but can respond to sign language.”
“Is he yours?”
You smiled, shaking your head a little bit as you walked over, handing him the paper work.
“He’s yours. I know you’re still hurting for JB, and until you’re ready I’ll look after him, but he needs someone who’ll love him like you would.”
At first Eggsy was reluctant to have the new dog in his life.
But soon Bolt grew on him, wherever your brother went Bolt wanted to go, he absolutely loved Eggsy, he loved being near him. He was always so happy to see him.
Eggsy didn’t want to admit it but he did grow soft on the dog, and began to take him out with him.
He was starting to get out more and become more of himself.
You knew he would still hurt over JB, but seeing your brother actually manage to sleep, Bolt laid over him, it made you feel a little at ease

The Saga of Zaku's Crittering
Met with the dog trainer today. She said that I'm doing a great job with him (I told her I feel like I'm failing as a trainer) and that she can tell how much work I've been putting in. She said she also has Imposter Syndrome with some of her dogs really bad, which was very relieving to hear.
For my own notes, here is what we worked on and my homework for the next couple of weeks:
-- Introduced the prong collar and yielding to leash pressure. Practice in low distraction environments and gradually add distractions.
-- Vary the rewards. Zaku is used to receiving one cookie and then immediately checking out. Give him two, four, three, five, etc. to keep his interest. Also back up and encourage him to follow me as I reward him.
-- Introduced heel position. Work on this until he's solid.
-- Work on Place. He needs a lot more practice on matwork in distracting environments. It will be a very important life skill for him to be able to calm himself and relax while exciting things are happening.
-- Add a correction when I ask for attention and he doesn't give it. Jackpot if he gives it without being asked.
-- For walks, immediately do some heelwork and attention exercises when I get him out of the car, then release him to sniff. Then ask to heel, and ask for attention whenever he starts to get distracted. Reward by releasing to sniff. The goal is to get used to checking in with me.
For the future:
-- She'll help me transition to the ecollar so we can proof our recall. I've been using an ecollar for over a decade but I can always use some pointers. Zaku handles differently than the other dogs I've ecollar-trained.
-- We'll meet in the actual park I walk in so she can see what I'm dealing with and do some fine-tuning.
-- She'll talk with another trainer to formulate a gameplan so we can get Zaku ready to go on pack hunts. Zaku isn't aggressive but he likes chasing the greyhounds and grabbing them and that is completely unacceptable. She's confident this can be managed.
-- I told her I'd love it if he could be a rabbit dog like Bindi and Kermit, I just need him to be smart about it and she said that's totally doable.
So it was a very good session and I feel a lot better now. I haven't fucked my puppy up beyond repair and he isn't too much dog for me, and I can do the things I bought him for. She was very complimentary on his responsiveness and was amazed by his rear end awareness (very pleased with that since that's what we've been working on for the last month).

this is so specific, but like when i was younger, i was a huggge fan of therealgonzoldyck’s fic black butterfly (which i found reuploaded on wattpad when i was like 13/14 lol), and like i knew of the plagiarism (since the person who reuploaded it, mentioned it), but i just couldn’t figure out how tumblr works.
i haven’t thought about it in years, but i’ve been thinking about it again, and i truly just need all the tea on that situation 😭 just for some childhood closure onto what happened. and i saw you in the search bar talking about how you were there for it. so i would love to know all your thoughts about the matter :)
obviously this isn’t meant to gossip or anything, since i’m aware it was in like 2015, so i assume therealgonzoldyck has learned their lesson and changed. i’m just really curious, and into fandom history lol. if this is too invasive or something, you definitely don’t have to answer it! :) ty if you even read it though. i’m just really nosey, lol!
omg
Tumblr media
ATTENTION MY FELLOW PRESENT-IN-2015-HXH-TUMBLRITES, WUZZY'S SHIT MEMORY CALLS FOR AID
jfc i haven't thought about that fic in years. i uh. i have to admit that i personally didn't like it, iirc i think i thought the perspective/POV felt inconsistent and it kept throwing me off? basically i kept getting confused so i stopped reading it. But I really liked one specific oneshot they posted was a zombie apocalypse survival story that was mostly Killua sobbing in a bunker bc Gon was dead, so, idk what that says about me. Would love to know what fandom that one was originally for, if any.
unfortunately for this fandom lore gossip sesh, while i was technically around when all this went down, I was still only a peripheral lurker to the fandom in 2015 – and i'd just powered through the anime in May/June anyways – so i didn't actually have a front row seat for the whole therealgonzoldyck drama, as much as i love to reference it. (I love to reference it because the entire thing was buckwild and i NEED people to know that this happened)
What i DO remember is this: (a) I read a different oneshot that made me go "[confused greyhound headtilt] Huh this sounds like it should be a Teen Wolf fic? Because Killua uses a specific ability that Scott McCall literally just got earlier this season?? but it's not a Teen Wolf AU???? i'm confused." (b) eventually the plagiarism news trickled down to me in the form of a callout post (?) with screenshots showing that BB was originally an Inception fic or something. (c) me, three months later when i remembered all this happened: "oh so that WAS a Teen Wolf fic all along!!!! AHA!!!!!"
anyways. @autumnxsunflower i feel like we've talked about this drama before or at least you'd be more likely to remember it than I am? feel free to chime in if you want to spill some tea as well (and anyone else who's got details)

Dream last night where I had a huge bald ring on my head seperating some tiny ass bangs and the rest of my hair that poofed up in the back. Then the other dream was we were living in a different house (one I have not ever lived in) and built a catio for Sundae and Milkshake except the door to outside sucked and had a big enough gap off the groynd that the cats could flatten themselves down and crawl through to outside. I'm talking like 4 inch gap here, it was bad. Anyways, Sundae makes it outside but she's not really sprinting off into the trees, just playing with Milkshake through the window. Veronica's like "Okay who let the cats outside" and we go and grab Sundae.
Then I realize in the dream we have FOUR cats. The third cat is my darling grumpy old man Charlie whom I haven't seen in months since he got adopted, and the fourth was not a cat but a dog. I don't know what breed this dog was, she was big and black and brown and had gangly legs but not as gangly as a borzoi or greyhound or whippet. Also her name was Chubit (like chew bit) and she loved tummy scratches. And in the dream I was half aware I was awake so I saw her and heard her name and was like "Ah yeah, Chubit! I know you from real life!" Cut to me waking up and immediately going "Who the fuck is Chubit"

Puppies And Exercise: How Much Is Too Much?
Tumblr media
I’m often asked, “Is there such a thing as TOO much exercise for a puppy?” I feel that as long as you are careful and attentive to your puppy, the puppy is the best one to tell you what too much exercise is. Puppies often do not have enough muscle tone to take long runs, but there are always exceptions. Most puppies will tell you when they have hit their limit, and it is vital to resist pushing them beyond this point.
Some Things to Be Cautious About
Dangers of Over-Exercising Puppies
Your puppy is growing just like a human child, and its bones need time to mature. Over-exercising them during the puppy phase could damage growth plates, leading to conditions such as early-onset arthritis or hip dysplasia. If you are too hot, assume your puppy is hot. Provide water to your puppy, or try to run in a cooler area to avoid overheating.
Be Consistent with Exercising Puppy
The weekend marathon after a week of couch potato life is very hard on the joints. Just like humans, daily exercise is essential for puppies, and they need physical activity to stay healthy and help them grow strong muscles and bones.
Be Cautious with Your Puppy's Feet
Running on cement (especially hot cement) can cause sloughing of the foot pads, so try to have breaks on softer surfaces or at least work your puppy up to the harder surfaces to give them a chance to form the necessary calluses.
Be Aware of Your Puppy's Limits
Until you understand your puppy’s stamina, be sure that you can stop when your puppy starts to lag. That means taking the short route five times instead of the long way once. If you feel that the furry friend cannot go as far as he should, consult a vet to see if there is a health reason for the intolerance.
Tumblr media
How Much Exercise Is Appropriate for Puppies?
Watch for any signs that they’re tired, like barely moving or walking at slower speeds than usual. It is essential to regulate your puppy’s activity level from the start. You can do this by ensuring they’re not over-exercised or taxed in any way, leading them towards joint damage later on down the road. Puppies are naturally excited and rarely show signs of fatigue, so you must be giving them plenty of rest time.
Breed Type
If you have a breed that’s at risk for joint conditions such as hip dysplasia, it is important to exercise them wisely and sensibly. Discourage them from jumping up and skidding because it puts a lot of strain on the puppy’s joints.
Breed Size
Make sure you know roughly how long your pup will be growing before they reach their full size because until then, their joints and growth plates risk damage if given too much exercise! Most dogs are fully developed by one year, but larger breeds such as Greyhounds and Great Danes may take 18 months to two years before they reach full size.
Tumblr media
Examples of Exercises for Puppies
If you want your puppy to be healthy and happy, they need to have not only good physical fitness but also mental health. Here are some examples of ways to get your furry friend moving.
Walks
Walks are an excellent way for you and your pup to get some exercise, but puppies must be fully vaccinated before starting. Walking with your puppy allows them to explore their surroundings, smells, and sounds. When building their walking stamina, always take it easy on the pup and stop if they begin to lag. Make sure that they have enough energy left to make it home.
Mental Exercise
Just as a dog needs to exercise its body, it also requires mental stimulation. Snuffle mats, and puzzle feeders are a great way to stimulate your pup mentally and keep them occupied.
Play!
The best way to keep your pup happy and healthy is by playing with them inside and out! Remember that they need plenty of rest, so don’t overdo it. Wrestling, romping, chasing, and tugging are all engaging ways to play with your pup.
Train
Keeping your pup’s mind active and stimulated is vital to stay happy. Teaching your furry friend some basic commands will keep their brains working and give you something new that the two of you can explore! Keep training sessions short and allow time for plenty of rest.
Run, Run, Run
It’s perfectly fine to allow your puppy to run freely around your home at their own pace. However, they should not go on a run with you since their bones are still developing
Tumblr media
How to Safely Exercise a Puppy Before Fully Vaccinated
Keeping your puppy vaccinated and off the ground in public places is important – here are some tips for keeping them occupied while you wait.
Use a puzzle feeder or a feeder toy.
Play at home, either indoors or outdoors.
Invite a small group of friends to come interact with your puppy at your home.
When in public places, carry them.
Begin teaching and training basic commands.
Have doggy playdates at your home with pups that are fully vaccinated.
Introduce your puppy to the car and get them used to riding in a travel cage or wearing a seatbelt.
Puppy Exercise Safety Tips
Keeping your puppy vaccinated and off the ground in public places is important – here are some tips for keeping them occupied while you wait.
Walks should be short (taking multiple breaks) and avoid hikes, running, and cycling until they are fully grown.
Jumps, twists, and skids are high-impact exercises that can cause joint strain, so limit these actions
Teach your puppy how to walk on a leash.
Allow the puppy to rest and keep exercise sessions short.
To protect their joints, cover slippery surfaces in your home.
Increase the length of the walk gradually.
Aim for three exercise sessions per day. One can be a game of hide-and-seek in the house, and the other can be short walks.
When to Contact Your Veterinarian
If you are concerned about your puppy’s health and fitness level or notice lameness, we recommend reaching out to your vet. The doctor will examine your puppy to determine joint issues. You could be exercising your pup too much and need to rest more.

Making Friends and Influencing People, The Greyhound Tour.
After the initial outrage and push for protests and marches had died off, myself and the humans of Greyhound Awareness Cork changed tactics. We no longer needed to stand in one spot every weekend trying to get people to stop so we could pass on some facts about Racing to try and change their minds, they already knew the facts and wanted to know how to help. So we changed the game plan. It was time to mobilize.
After spending time in Mollys presence for the last few Months, Robert was ready to face the world in such a capacity. He no longer baulked at passing traffic or shyed away from outstretched hands. With Miss Moly by his side, he was bomb proof! And so, we packed the two hounds up and started touring Cork and beyond!
Tumblr media
We hit Bantry farmers market, setting up shop right in the middle of the plaza, with placards and posters in a perfect circle, covering all sides. Bantry featured in the RTE documentary in a negative light, playing host to the Ferry that brought hounds over to Whiddy island for Open Coursing. Unlike Coursing organized by Coursing Clubs, Open Coursing features the terrorizing of Hares in their natural habitat, and rarely features a Vet or Regulatory Officer to ensure proper treatment of Hound and Hare.
Somewhat unsurprisingly, the community in Bantry were disgusted with the portrayal of their hometown in such a poor light, and many a passerby stopped to chat and pet the Hounds, adding their voice of support and wishing for change. There were a few locals too who scoffed and walked by, or yelled at us across the street, the usual cat-calls and jeers of "get a job" or "wasters". Those who did yell were looked upon by neighbors with a disapproving eye.
Tumblr media
We often say that a single mind changed by these Awareness Events is a marked success, and I don't think I've ever seen it in such effect as the Awareness Event in Bantry. Halfway through the event, a young boy, no more than 11 or 12, wandered over. He asked to pet the hounds and was delighted of course by Robert and Molly and their gentle kisses and head bops. He told us his cousins raced Greyhounds and that he'd been to the track a few times, including for his communion but he'd never actually been able to pet them before. He then asked what was so wrong with Greyhound Racing. When dealing with children at these events, or online, caution is obviously needed. So we simplified it down to a more child-friendly form, explaining how the Greyhounds often didn't have a good life when racing, and could suffer injuries or be treated badly if they didn't win. The child nodded and wandered off, only to return half an hour later with a gang of similar aged boys with him.
They all gathered around the dogs, petting and stroking them. We didn't interact much with them as a group, but I did listen to their conversation. Without our prompting they were discussing the dogs and Greyhound Racing. They were talking about the dog they had seen "doing cartwheels" on the track, and one boy queried what happened to him after he was carried off. You could see the cogs turning in their heads as they put two and two together. They left after taking in their fill of greyhound cuddles, and I count that as the notable success of the Bantry awareness event.
Tumblr media
As a group, Greyhound Awareness Cork was invited to Limerick by a group of individuals who wanted to expand and establish a similar group in Limerick. They had been in touch over social media and email, but struggled with the concept of an awareness event, how to go about setting it up and how to be both approachable and informative. In writing, an Awareness event seems pretty straight forward- pick a public spot, bring a couple of Greyhounds, and get chatting to the passers-bys, but in practice, there are often moving parts that can make or break an event.
So we whisked Molly and Robert up to Limerick, where they did what they do best- make friends and influence people. Dozens and dozens of people stopped in their shopping to pet them and have a chat. It was a prime example of a successful event.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We continued with trackside protests, back in our traditional peaceful and silent format. Instead of focusing on our local Curaheen Track, we started to venture out to Youghal track. Youghal Track at the time was running a promotion of free entry to the track to try and boost attendance. Even prior to the RTE documentary, Youghal track had been in complete decline. A combination of an old, dilapidated structure, older clientele and more attractive family-orientated activities located nearby had started to push Youghal closer to the edge of shutting down. It almost did, after receiving a fire hazard report, but due to local council action, managed to stay afloat.
The protests outside Youghal Greyhound Track almost felt redundant. There were more people standing outside protesting than actually attending the meets, even with the free entry grab. Youghal track moved away from public meets in the months following, converting almost entirely to SIS racing, which is streamed across the world. Many tracks have gone this route in recent years in desperate bids to stay open.
Tumblr media
As well as the tours of Cork and beyond, we continued with our Cork City events. We started a petition for the public to sign, urging local councils to call for the phased ban of Greyhound Racing and Coursing. We continued to allow the hounds to advocate for themselves, showing off just how great they are as beloved members of the family and not just as 'race dogs'. We strolled along markets, visited dog friendly establishments and exhibits, attending community events and overall kept our presence strong in the community.
As the dust settled from the RTE documentary, it became clear that many, many people had turned their backs on the "sport". Sponsors had pulled out en-masse, leaving Greyhound Racing high and dry when it came to prize money and race meets. Pressure was on from the public eye to step up and do more for the dogs at the heart of the industry, dogs that had previously been tossed aside as wastage.
The pressure from the public led to governmentally mandated change within the industry. An increase in the implementation of the traceability system, more comprehensive testing of race dogs for performance altering substances, pressure on trainers to at least try and home the dogs who were deemed surplus to requirements, etc. On top of the pressure to rehome instead of dispose came an increase in people offering Greyhounds a space on their couch, catalyzed in part by those Greyhounds and Rescues who had been promoting Greyhounds as the Greyt pets they truly are for years before hand. This led to a notable increase in the Rescue Hound Population here in Cork....

GALTx eNews: October Is Greyhound Awareness Month!
October is Greyhound Awareness Month! It seems like the word about Greyhounds is getting out, but let’s keep the energy of the recent Great Global Greyhound Walk going and spread the word some more!
You can spread awareness about Greyhounds in a number of ways. Talking about them and sharing photos on social media reaches a lot of people. If you don’t have a hound of your own, you can always share our posts in whatever networks you visit. When the weather permits, many hounds like to join you to run errands at pet friendly venues such as Home Depot, Lowes, Petco and other pet supply stores. Joining other Greyhound parents to walk together at a busy local park can be a lot of fun for all too. On these outings, take a moment to let the people you encounter pet your hound and answer a few questions.
Many find it fun to talk about the name of their hound’s color on the Official Greyhound Color Chart. If you’re not familiar, click here to read more. Greyhound enthusiasts also have a language all their own to describe their Greyhounds quirky behavior. Take a look at the list we have compiled here and try a few as conversation starters. Additionally, many Greyhounds come with long pedigrees and racing records that impress those they meet. You can also share about how you discovered Greyhounds or got involved in Greyhound adoption as a volunteer. A quick show and tell of your hound’s ear tattoos can be fun too.
Whatever you share about your hounds, have a good time spreading the word about this wonderful breed!

What would happen if Edward Elric walked through an airport metal detector?
How serious can I be with this.
He wouldn't bc he doesn't have airports in his time.
He wouldn't bc by the time airports became a thing he'd probably be too old to even want to go anywhere, let alone by the time airport metal detectors became a thing.
But let's say he time traveled, and universe jumped. Now he's gonna go on the plane with me to Calgary in a couple months and is staying with me until then. Most likely I'm gonna just find him an alternate route to get there. Here dude, take this shuttle bus since greyhound isn't a thing anymore (rip)
But if he HAS to fly, first we gotta get him some money to bribe somebody to get him official documents. He's gonna need a passport and birth certificate and a SIN and a services card (I'm not explaining those tho I'm well aware y'all ain't got them in the states) while we're at it we could get him the disability thing that MIGHT make it so he could be allowed to have a bunch of metal on him through the detector. Idk exactly how those work but I assume it'd say he's an amputee and these are his prosthetics and please leave him alone.
Now I'm gonna pretend he's just in front of me in the line up. He did not stay with me, I'm only just cluing into an anime character appeared, and he made his own choices once appearing in this new world with new tech.
I'm gonna be pissed aren't I. Thank fk they'll just shove me over to another line and I already showed up like 3 hours early bc I can't stand being late

Columbus Zoo Cheetah Run 4K Slow Motion
See the Cheetah Run exhibit at the Columbus Zoo...this almost daily demonstration show you the power of how fast the Cheetah really is and also raises awareness of why its important for us to make sure we continue to protect and grow the Cheetah population. You can find this exhibit in the Africa section of the zoo... check your guidemap for times and details. Watch the fastest land mammal reach top speeds in Heart of Africa at the Cheetah Run! These cats will chase a lure while displaying their speed and agility. 2022 Season Run Times: April 30 - May 27: 11 a.m., 3 p.m. (Weekends only) May 28 - November 6: 11 a.m., 3 p.m. (Daily) https://www.columbuszoo.org/home/visit/explore-your-columbus-zoo/special-experiences/cheetah-run General Information Physical Characteristics Unlike other cats, the cheetah has a leaner body, longer legs, and has been referred to as the "greyhound" of the cats. Its distinguishing marks are the long teardrop-shaped lines on each side of the nose from the corner of its eyes to its mouth. The cheetah's coat is tan, or buff-colored, with black spots measuring from 78 to 1.85 inches across. There are no spots on its white belly, and the tail has spots that merge to form four to six dark rings at the end. The tail usually ends in a bushy white tuft. Male cheetahs are slightly larger than females and have a slightly bigger heads, but it is difficult to tell males and females apart by appearance alone. The fur of newborn cubs is dark and the spots are blended together and barely visible. During the first few weeks of life, a thick yellowish-gray coat, called a mantle, grows along the cub's back. The dark color helps the cub to blend into the shadows. The mantle begins to disappear at about three months old, but the last traces of it, in the form of a small mane, are still present at over two years of age. Median Life Expectancy Female: 11.3 years Male: 11.3 years Predators & Threats Cheetah cubs have many enemies among other predators: lions, leopards, hyenas, wild dogs, or even eagles. However, a healthy adult cheetah has few enemies outside of humans because of their speed. Nutrition Cheetahs are solitary hunters except when living in a coalition. When this is the case they will hunt in groups so that they can take down larger prey. Unlike the common misconception, the cheetah will pick out animals that have strayed from the herd as a target, not necessarily the weak or old. The cheetah preys on hares, rodents, and the young of hoofed mammals, such as gazelles and impalas, using a unique hunting style. The cheetah first stalks a herd. At the right moment, it emerges from cover and panics the prey into running. The cheetah follows at high speed, usually catching up to the prey within a minute. Panting after a chase, they may need to rest up to 20 minutes while their respiration and body temperature return to normal. Since cheetahs rely mainly on sight for hunting, they are more diurnal than most cats, doing most of their hunting during the day when other predators are likely to be resting. Once they have recovered, cheetahs eat quickly. They are not strong enough to guard their catch, so they have one chance to eat. They often lose their food to larger more aggressive animals, such as lions, hyenas, or even vultures. For this reason, they must kill more often, expending more energy than other big cats. Cheetahs catch their prey in only half of the hunting attempts they make. Size Length: Head and body can be up to 5 ft, tail 2-2.5 ft. Height: Around 30 in. at the shoulder Weight: 80-140 lbs. https://www.columbuszoo.org/guide/animal.html?id=59d2b532-bd2f-67d7-bdc2-ff0000bf4b43 columbus, zoo, aquarium, ohio, conservation, animals, wildlife, non, profit, family, cute, exotic, hanna, jack, columbus zoo, things to do in ohio, kids activities in ohio, family activities in ohio, nat geo wild, national geographic, wild, wildlife, animals, nat geo, natgeo, science, discover, nature, documentary, cheetah, zoo ,cheetah nat geo, Via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYYPAmLJPS0

One of us! One of us! One of us!
I was recently asked how many dogs are in our Rescue Hound Pack, and honestly, I couldn’t give a straight answer. Three years ago, I would have been able to answer 3, and named each as Molly, Robert and Cooper. After the amazing boom in Greyhound Adoption that followed the revelations of the RTÉ Documentary and Rescues tirelessly promoting Greyhounds as Great Pets, our numbers have soared. There’s rarely an event that we don’t hit double digits, and the amazing thing is, it’s a rotating collection of Greys! So I sat down and actually scanned back through the years to figure out a timeline of Rescue Hounds in Cork!
Tumblr media
The first hound in the Rescue pack is of course Molly, the founding Hound of Greyhound Awareness Cork. For a period of time, Molly was the only grey flying the flag for the hounds. She is the OG G.A.C greyhound. We often describe Molly as a “gateway Greyhound”, as her small size and striking brindle coat make her very approachable to the public. Shortly before Robert came home, Cooper was adopted, though he didn’t really get involved in GAC until later on. Robert was the third hound in Cork active in the Awareness Pack, but due to his relationship with Molly and his dependence on her for comfort and support in those early days, he soon became just as recognisable as Molly in terms of the GAC pack. In those early days, many events were made up of just Robert and Molly, though they do make a striking couple, walking side by side with such a size difference! Gentle giant Robert and brazen brindle Molly turned many a head and stole many a heart. When Cooper joined the gang, the trio stopped traffic! He couldn’t always join the awareness events, but he was doing GREYT work on the adoption front, taking part in meet and greets and home checks.
Tumblr media
For a time, it was just Molly, Robert and occasionally Cooper, when he wasn’t busy with the Rescue Front. But then came Ned. I was quite involved with Neds adoption story, in a round-a-bouts way! It started with an emergency appeal for a foster home, not for a greyhound, but for two collie puppies. These pups had just done a round in the ring with Parvovirus and needed a place to recover before going on to find their furever homes. So Robert and I volunteered. The pups were dropped to us in a very sorry state, and couldn’t be left unsupervised for very long. As such, I was relying heavily on support from friends to help. One friend was dropping a crate to the apartment for them, and when I was standing outside the block, two satchels strung over my shoulders, a puppy in each, I was approached by a young woman who swooned over the babies in the bags. She joked about minding them anytime, and when I joked about living across the street, we discovered we were neighbours! She lived on the ground floor, I lived on the top floor. She had no clue that there had been a Greyhound in the block for the past few months, and was enamoured with the two tiny puppies. As it happened, she did end up pet-sitting for a few hours one day, and applied to adopt one of the pups. She was turned down for the collie, but after learning about just how GREYT Greyhounds are as pets, she applied for a hound instead. Cooper and his pawrents did her home check too, and after passing, there was only one hound she wanted to bring home- Ned.
Anyone working in rescue will tell you that male greyhounds wait longer for homes than female greyhounds, likely on account of their size. Likewise, they will tell you that black greyhounds wait longer than any other colour Greyhound. So a Male, Black Greyhound like Ned tend to wait much longer than other dogs. In Neds case, he had spent just under a full year in kennels waiting for a home. Noodle Horse Ned, with his wonky micro ears, Roman nose and cross eyed gaze may have had to wait longer than most for his furever family, but when he found his Mom, there was nothing that could hold him back. He’s a giddy, excitable hound, with a plethora of quirks to go with his quirky look. Having two hounds in the apartment block brought a new lease of life to the area, and even after Ned and his Mom moved out, himself and Robert remain best furiends, hanging out regularly at dog friend pubs and swinging by each other’s gaff for cups of tea and sniffed bums! There was a bit of a lull after Neds adoption, but then came the Grey-plosion of Adoptions!
Tumblr media
Kelly was the next hound to join the group, a sweet brindle houndie with very soulful eyes. She’s a gentle girl, UNTIL there are treats around, then she will hound you until she has had her fill! Alfie, another black male was the next dog to join in the awareness events. Having two black males in the group was refreshing, considering how hard they are to find homes for! Amira, a niece of Roberts, was the next to join the group, followed by another niece of Roberts, Fleek. You’ll notice quite a lot of Roberts nieces and nephews joining the group over the next few years. This is due to the prolific breeding of Roberts father in the Irish Greyhound Scene. I don’t know exactly how many pups that dog has had, but every second hound seems to be related to Rob in some capacity! Baby Blue Coco joined the pack next. Coco never really raced, due to the fact she is missing a toe. It took a bit of figuring out to get her comfortable walking, but a single bootie has done the job well! We often get questions from passersby asking about her shoe, and the shocked response of her missing a toe never gets old! Sassy Sally started to lend her voice to the cause around this time, stealing hearts and treats alike from every human she met. Golden oldie Naomi started to attend events shortly after Coco. She’s the most salt and peppered of our houndie pack, but full of life and love! Sadie was the next hound to make an appearance at events, followed by Stevie and then Ruby. Stevie and Ruby are unique amongst Greyhounds in that they are some of the few hounds that seemed to have missed the memo about Greys supposedly being 45km/hr couch potato’s! Both hounds are always switched on, ready to go go go! Luckily for them, they both came through a phenomenal rescue who knows exactly how to match hounds to households. Ruby ended up with a family just as loopers as she is! I’ve never met a whole family so bubbly and outgoing! Stevie found a home with a rather athletic man who can give her the time and energy outlets she needs. Trust a marathon runner to be able to deal with a dog who could likewise run a marathon! Big boned brindle beauty Allie was the next hound to attend the events. Allie was probably the heaviest set Greyhound I’ve ever met. She had the broadest shoulders and strongest chest I’ve seen to date. Despite her string stature, she was affectionately known as the local “Tiger Dog” by neighbour children. Unfortunately Allie passed suddenly a few months after her adoption, but we will ALWAYS count her as a member of the GAC pack.
Tumblr media
Alongside Allie was Riley. Riley was adopted before Allie, and was actually the hound that inspired Allies adoption, but as they live across the country, they technically joined after her. Molly (differentiated from Brindle Molly as Black Molly) and Jess were the next pair to make an appearance. To Adopted siblings, these two black hounds fly the flag for the darker coated dogs! Marley and Dody were both in foster at the same time here in Cork, but Marley was adopted prior to Dody and hence, I will count him before his foster brother, Dody was adopted to a household with a second hound, Sandy and the pair have attended a few events since. Pepper, another salt and peppered hound, was the next to make regularly appearances at events. Alongside greying Naomi, these pair make for a very striking pair. They also remind us of how many hounds don’t get to grow old, and how few older hounds make it to rescue kennels. After Pepper, the lovely Layla added her number to the group! Compared to the three hounds we started with, having such a varied pack of hounds, all safe and adored, was mind blowing, and the numbers only continued to grow!
Tumblr media
Bubbly Maizey added her giggly, wiggly self to the cause. Poor Maizey is covered in scars, including some rather nasty head wounds, but that doesn’t stop her from being a literal ray of sunshine at any given chance! Squiggle was the next hound to lend their paw to the cause. Hailing from Australia, one of the few countrys where Greyhound Racing is legal and rampant, Squiggle, the hound from down under brings to light the international element of our cause. Around this time a second Pepper joined the group. To mark a difference between the Peppers, this Pepper is often referred to as Black Pepper. Black Pepper is a bit younger that Other Pepper, and is a Divil for the treats! She’d give Kelly a run for her money when it comes snacking! There was a boom in black hound adoptions around this time with two more black dogs, Yuki and Izzy joining the pack respectively. The number of black greyhounds being adopted is really heartwarming, considering the volume of black coated dogs in the racing industry. And whilst every greyhound in a home is one less greyhound potentially on a knackery floor, there’s always an extra little bit of happiness for the black coated dogs. Vinny, a striking dusty brindle was the next to make an appearance in the pack. Unlike the other hounds who generally have a grey or white mask, Vinny has a black one, which to me, gives him a very mischievous look! Huge Hound Balder is the next GAC pack member, a HUGE dog towering over even Robert! There are very few hounds who top Rob height wise, but Balder definitely is one! After Balder, came a duo of Cedric and Penny!
Tumblr media
Penny was actually a former foster of ours, one of our shortest fosters to date! She found her furever home here in Cork with a family who decided to take on two hounds at once! Penny and Cedric are good for one another. Penny joins hounds like Stevie and Ruby for that ✨crackhead✨ energy, whereas Cedric is so mellow he often melts into the floor. Poor Cedric can be a bit nervy at times though, so having confident, outgoing, love the world Penny at his side helps him tackle those issues, whilst Cedric provides a pawfect anchor for Penny’s away with the fairy’s attitude! And then we add our first Tri-pawed to the pack- Champ! Champ may be down a leg, but he still landed on her feet with his furever family! He is another stark reminder however, of how few hounds make it out of the industry after injury. In 2021, 154 Greyhounds were killed on Irish Tracks, over half of those dogs had suffered “hock injuries”. Champ is living proof that even if the leg won’t heal well, amputation is an option and the dogs live happy lives afterwards. After Champ, Nessa is the next hound to take part in Awareness Events. Gorgeous Nessa is such a free spirit, happy to go where the flow is and soak up the attention and ear rubs! Speaking of ears, Annie with the Ears is the next hound in the pack. Annie has the most amazing, wonky, descriptive ears of any hound I’ve ever met! In their resting position, instead of folding flat in the typical “rose ear” of most greys, Annie’s flop forward, like a little bow on each side of her head! Vogue, true to her name with her model good looks, is the next hound to join the pack. Vogue really could be on the cover of her namesake! The next GAC addition is Daphne, named for the Scooby Doo character, not the recent Bridgerton show, Daphne is a foster failure! Daphne has big shoes to fill, looking after the late-Allies Mom, but is doing a wonderful job so far. And the newest member of our pack, handsome houndie Freddie! Another MASSIVE dog, Freddie is warming up to rescue life slow and steady!
And I think that brings us up to date… so far! I’m sure I’ve missed a dog or two, compared to the three dogs we started with, the 40+ dogs is getting hard to track! Looking back at those starter events, where it was just Robert and Molly, having double digit attendance at more recent events is mind blowing, especially considering that it’s a rotation of dogs! I’m also more than sure that I’ve not got the order 100% correct, as I’m basing it off social media appearance as well as memory, which can get a little blurry looking back over three years of Greyhound’s and Greyhound Awareness! So here’s to three years of Greyhound Adoptions here in Cork, and here’s to many many more!
