• Oh he's so dramatic... (Even though he hugs you all night and rubs his head against you, or he might purrs like a big cat.)

• Because of the rules of the orphanage, he has a habit of waking up early in the morning, but the first thing he does when he sees you next to him is to blush and cover his mouth with his hands so that you don't hear him gasp.

• Then he puts his hand on his heart, because he feels that it beats very strongly and you might wake up from its sound!

• He stays in the same position for a long time and cannot even move.

Man, it’s been a while since a post, yeah? I hit that classic burnout stage. Got lost in the universe burnout for a long while and couldn’t draw much for months. I am alright, but what a crash >>.

This drawing was started on 1/21 and was supposed to come out for my birthday (1/23). I turned 22! Finally big big goober age and still very silly! ☆ But uh, I missed that deadline, haha. I spent a good extra 2 months on it by accident. Working on and off over the course of multiple days, working in general, wehhhhhhah.

Told myself to get it done by Artie’s birthday (3/9) too, and then well, missed that too! Sheeeesh. But it’s done now and I quite enjoy the outcome for what it’s worth. I hope you all do too!

Artie’s hair took so long to shade… I want to shave them bald. Jk. Partially…

This “episode” focuses on well, a laser tag party! Jack isn’t the type to be extra competitive usually, but he was over the sun excited to be on the same team as Artemis. The two had a game plan: blue team will reign supreme! Watch my back! <3

Except for when the game started, Jack’s vest lit up in the enemies color. Accidental traitor. Maybe he could ask the referees to pause the game so he could swap— oh! Artie just zapped him and ran off.

Throughout the shooting of the 5th generation MV the weather was really nice, I might be the 5th generation girl that brings the sun… (said the nervous girl that brings rain, Ikeda Teresa)

 Today, April 29th.

On this day last year was the first time I addressed everybody in my first ever blog, and that’s why today is my blog anniversary day!

How nostalgic…my hair was soooo short

 YaY YaY, I wrote so many blogs over the past year, I’m so happy at all the responses from everyone during that time,,. Thank you for always reading my blogs, I’m going to continue to write a lot this year as well so please read them too 😳🤍

 Well then, I’m going to write about the Under Live today..

 Last year I talk about the get to know us meet and greet LIVE so this is some kind of crazy coincidence eheh

We successfully completed the 32 single Under Live!

 Thank you to all the fans that came from all over the country to come see us as well as the people who watched the live stream. It was thanks to all of your support that we were able to do our best, thank you very much m(_ _)m

 This Under Live, when I heard that we would be going on tour to Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, I was surprised, worried, and I was trying to imagine what kind of LIVE it would be. Would I be able to help make the LIVE better are some thoughts that kept swirling around in my head. I don’t have a lot of confidence in my dancing and singing ability, and this time I was really scared of being in a formation alongside the senior members..

 However, through the experiences that I had over the course of this Under Live I feel like my fear (I’m scared to write about being aware that I’m not good at something but the atmosphere at the LIVE and meeting everyone are things that I absolutely love doing!) has slightly gone away (˶' ᵕ ' ˶)

The senior members helped us so much and giving advice on our imperfections and pulled us along with a smile and we could really feel how much they helped us. During the LIVE when our eyes met they would doing things like give us a smile…it made me very happy.

Naonao and Yuri-san before the performance

Naonao is really good at instantly becoming close with the senior members, I’m always a little bit jealous!

But when Rei-san saw that I was taking pictures alone she was like ‘Let’s take some together’ and entered the picture, it made me really happy. Next time I wanna kinda just like the one to ask them to join me for a picture… (It’s a mix of wanting to and will)!

 I’ve come to fall in love with many people, and it was also a period where I kind of liked myself a teeny bit more. I’m very grateful to the staff, the manager, the members, the other 5th generation members and all of the fans, to everyone that helped us and supported us over this period, thank you very much!!!!

my brains fog is lifting my Love/s??? So that I may see the perils of such craggy mountains.

But look my Love/s...the sun is peeking out & showing a faint rainbow!!! Isn't that just glorious, fresh, exciting & new!?!??

It makes me wanna sit down on that fore rock & grab my camera. Awed by the splendor of God's Creation! I love taking pictures of nature, & sometimes people. I do a lot of shots of clouds, sunsets, even sunrises. When I get my butt up. Giggling softly. I have bunches of plants, trees, my cats.

Gonna be a bit of a long post, so snip snap, read if you'd like. :P

🤭 Did you ever have an “oh crap I’m not a singlet” moment?

"(I know you *were* adamant about being a singlet way back when; curious about the realisations.)" Yeah, this kills the man, the man being us as a whole. Right, so, I think we've talked about this before, but I think the real moment was the first time we communicated directly. I don't even remember the timeline anymore - just know we were coming back from our clinic appointment. So taking this fucking long walk from the town over back to ours, right, mid-winter, it's cold as shit, snow everywhere, and we're just making our way home when we start hitting the urban area again after miles of frozen fields and podcast-listening, and the host just kind of, you know, it's been on our mind for a bit here. Like just the possibility that this is something after all - and she goes, well, it can't hurt to talk to them. Like what do you know, right? So she says hello and we just fucking explode all over her. Everybody's talking back, but me in particular. I was really active in the half-way place, getting my bearings and all that but I think particularly then because that kind of stuff gets me out anyway; appointments, long walks, exercise, nature. And I guess that's where we (me and her) laid out the first foundations for what our relationship is to begin with. We're a bit closer than others in the system, but that's another topic. Think it's just, because I was so ready to communicate, and did so safely, she trusted me more than others. J came as a close second just because of their unspoken relationship before that point but they've actually grown more distant over time because Jay doesn't do affection the way I do it, he's a bit harder to approach, and between them two (the host and Jay), there isn't a natural language to breach that barrier like there is between, say, me and Jay. So that, but like I said, different topic. I'd still say that's the point where this whole thing went from being a hypotethical to being like... shit, we're gonna need help navigating this, right? But in a good way.

🔆 What’s your favorite part of the day?

Personally, mornings. Like early mornings, say sunrise, summers that'd be four to five in the morning, winters I like to take our morning walk around six though there's no sun to be speaking of. Just something about the potential, about the world waking up, the clearness of the air, the chill, the dew on the grass and that scent of everything. And the free-roaming cats and jack rabbits around here, too. Lately we've been finding a lot of deer prints on our parking lot in the snow, don't know what the fuck is up with that, where are they coming from? We live in the middle of the town. What're you doing out here, buddies? Go back in the forest or eat up some fields or something.

🤩: Favorite Thing About Being Part Of A System?

Honestly, right now, just the support and love I get. It's been a shitty run for me for a while here and I can't thank my system enough for being - I don't know, patient, first off, but second-off just for trying to make it better any way they can, giving me little treats and the kind of affection I'm not getting elsewhere. It just means a lot even if it's not exactly what I need right now, they're doing everything they can to help me feel better, help me not hurt, and that matters to me. I'm trying to get better for them so I can give back some of that again.

“A big year” for Olathe sweet corn as pickers pluck first ears of the season

OLATHE — The sun’s first rays are spilling over Jumbo Mountain when the team clambers aboard the sprawling corn harvester. 

John Harold joins the pickers as they twist his “Olathe Sweet” sweet corn from the stalks. It’s barely 6 a.m. and the first harvest of the season is underway for the nationally celebrated ears. It’s the happiest moment for Harold, who turns 80 a week from Sunday.

“The ground is a little hard,” he says. “Makes ‘em harder to snap.”

It hasn’t rained for two months. The Uncompahgre River Valley is exceptionally dry. A heat wave is pushing midday temps past 100. But Harold, who has been harvesting his famous corn for 34 years, is giddy. No rain means no mud, he says. He’s got almost 180 workers ready for a three-month parade of picking and packing. The warm weather, it turns out, makes for some juicy, sweet corn. 

“Everything is early. Not just the corn, but the onions, the hay is early, too,” he says, his head down as he nimbly squeaks ear from stalk and tosses them into a truck bed. “It’s not just super warm days. You gotta understand that because of the warm nights the crop is growing more nights than normal. We are getting 24 hours a day worth of growth.”

Everything is good news for Harold, who sells his entire harvest — more than 700,000 containers this year, roughly 33.6 million ears — to the nearly 2,757-store Kroger Co., the parent to King Soopers and City Market stores. And this pandemic-addled season, as more folks are eschewing restaurants and eating at home, Kroger upped its annual order by 80,000 containers, or nearly 4 million ears. 

“This will be a big year,” Harold says, swatting swarming gnats as the worker-laden harvester growls through freshly sheared stalks. “They didn’t say why, but my guess is the pandemic has increased business at the grocery stores. Not to brag, but it’s a fact that our corn brings people to their stores and they made a conscious decision last fall they were going to feature our corn in more stores.”

The grocery chain is doing well in the pandemic as people stay close to home. Kroger last month reported a 19% increase in sales in its first fiscal quarter of 2020, which ended in the last week of May. Total sales for the quarter were $42 billion and Kroger posted an operating profit of $1.3 billion for the quarter, up from $903 million in 2019.  

Harold, who, along with his son David, runs the Tuxedo Corn company he founded in Olathe in 1986 — is no stranger to the challenges of farming. This year, the pandemic added a new layer to his typical fretting over labor, weather and water. Closed borders with Mexico threatened to disrupt the flow of workers Tuxedo needs in July, August and September as they harvest not just corn, but sweet onions and dry beans.

The initial crush of the pandemic in March and April delayed processing of his H-2A visas for the early wave of workers who help prepare his fields for planting. The delays lingered as Harold ramped up his visa-worker count, which reached full-staff of 180 just days before the first harvest last week. Soon, he will have three harvest crews working the fields around Olathe.

The Trump Administration’s crackdown on visa workers — largely H-2B and J-1 seasonal employees — as well as the president’s divisive rhetoric on immigration has further challenged Harold’s ability to get his workers from Mexico to field. 

“It’s a pain in the ass to work under him because he’s just so erratic,” says Harold, who welcomed his last wave of 85 workers last week. “But we’ve got everyone here now. H-2As seem to have escaped the wrath of Trump because he understands that civilizations fall when people get hungry. Well somebody around him knows that at least.”

Harold bought seven extra 15-passenger vans to shuttle workers between their housing and the fields, with only seven workers riding in each to maintain distance. They are required to wear masks inside vehicles. He takes their temperatures every morning and evening. Harold has what he called “a safe house” in case someone falls ill. He’s hired a cook to feed his crews so they don’t have to cook for themselves or venture into town to shop or eat. He bought a semi-trailer of water bottles so they don’t have to share a cooler on the harvester. He’s got cleaning crews sanitizing  his warehouse twice a day. 

“We are making every effort I know how to keep them safe because it’s a real concern of mine,” he says. “My cleaning costs have gone up about 1,000%.”

Many of his workers have been coming to pick his corn in the Uncompahgre River Valley for years. Harold knows just about every one of them by name. They step up their hustle when he joins them in the picking line. Early Monday, many of the workers embraced like family as they clambered aboard the harvester. 

And about those harvesters. It was more than 20 years ago when Harold was visiting corn farms in Florida when he was forced to pull off the road during a violent rainstorm. When the rain stopped, he realized he was parked in front of a welding shop that made custom harvest machines capable of trawling through 14 rows of corn stalks at a time. Now he has four of the unique contraptions, known as mule trains.

With wings spanning 43 feet, the mule train is built atop a five-ton, 6×6 military truck. About 24 pickers work around the vehicle, squeakily yanking ears from stalks and tossing them to another two dozen packers who pile the corn into containers. There’s Wi-Fi onboard, giving up-to-the-second locations for each box of corn that is packed.

Heavy trucks roll over freshly de-eared corn stalks to supply the mule train with empty pallets and boxes. It takes about 30 minutes for those trucks to roll back onto pavement with 420 containers heavy with sweet corn, bound for ice in the nearby warehouse. The couple-minute transition between full and empty trucks is a brief respite for workers in their daylong frenzy of ear-snapping and packing. 

Volunteers with the Sharing Ministries Food Bank were on hand Monday to collect a load of Harold’s sweet corn. The food bank will spin a lap through a lane of Harold’s corn every morning for the next six weeks, gathering critical fuel for a key food bank fundraiser. They sell the ears for $4 a dozen from a parking lot on the edge of Montrose. 

“We will sell out of all this by noon,” says Bradley Adams, riding shotgun as a team of pickers toss ears in the bed of his pickup. “This is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Everyone is waiting for this corn.”
