From Vintage Finds to Blooming Delights: Crafting Your Perfect Flea Market Garden
Today’s blog post will be the last, but certainly not the least in this months series on garden design and themes. I’ve saved this one for last, as it is my very favorite. I actually combine elements of both the cottage garden and flea market gardening, as I feel they go hand in hand. I love the free form these gardens offer, along with the whimsical elements I can include. I’m super excited to…

Right Plant, Right Place in the Junque Garden
The flowers – annuals and perennials and a few that hadn’t yet made up their minds which way to go – were stuck in a far corner of our greenhouse, abandoned to their fate.
The mix included verbena, lantana, salvia, the euphorbia ‘Diamond Frost’ and a few others whose names escape me. One of the problems with being considered a garden expert is you know in your heart you really don’t know that much.
Some of those flowers been grown from seed, about 25 cultivars we had carefully selected from catalogs in January, planted in a heated greenhouse in March and babied until planting times. Those came with the most emotional attachment.
Other flowers – all perennials – came from plugs. We had ordered a few hard-to-find cultivars which came, of course, with a minimum of 20 to 30 each, way the hell more than wanted or needed. My attachment to them was more financial.
The ‘Diamond Frost’ – a perfect name for that white-speckled, frail-looking number – came from a nursery or box store; the mind wanders at the scale of keeping up with all my plants. ‘Diamond Frost’ has long been a favorite of my wife. I could apparently take it but mostly left it.
At any rate, when the spring planting was done a few of each ended up in that far corner of the greenhouse. In most cases they were the runts of the litter, locked away in too-small containers, root-bound, water-needy, sad-looking and in need of Osmocote and more love then I had time to give.
I was seriously considering just chucking those puny outliers into the compost pile lest some true gardener wander by and wonder what those orphans were doing there.
But I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I had some time, money, material and pride tied up in those plants. Looking at it from their perspective, they were still hanging on. They deserved a chance to live, to at least get out of those containers and into the ground.
The immediate problem was all my regular garden areas were taken by annuals and perennials doing pretty darn well. I didn’t want to crowd them. So I found a place for those Most Needy in perhaps the worst possible place – an area that had once been the home of container shrubs when I was in the nursery business.
As such, the site had been alternately covered in gravel, small rock, compost and mulch. It received about four hours of brutal afternoon sun. It was also bordered by old, decomposing railroad ties. Perfect.
I know what you’re thinking: Those plants would have been happier in the compost pile. The good news – sort of – was that the new site was also in a high-traffic area. Those plants, if they considered living, could be witnessed and adored by all.
Best I remember I took those plants over by the new site and let them sit there for a few more days, generally forgotten. Once in a while I would water the pack, but mostly left them alone to contemplate their fate.
Come planting day I was very surprised to see just how rocky that soil was. I could barely dig in three or four inches, considered using my tree spade, but stayed with the sharp trowel.
In about 45 minutes I had all of them in the alleged ground and covered with what could be considered fine gravel. Not a real good gardening site, I was thinking, but drainage shouldn’t be a problem.
I did water the site fairly regularly – as did others. There was some guilt involved in this whole process. I also tossed down a fine layer of Osmocote; hope does spring eternal. I also decided to name this site my “Junque Garden” – a guy can’t be too optimistic.
I was giving the garden a week, maybe two, to brown up and frizzle in that late afternoon sun. It refused to comply. The bright yellow lantana did well, of course. Once established it will grow in center-lane asphalt. The purple verbena was no big surprise either. It likes some sun and good drainage. The same with red salvia.
But wait a minute. In a few weeks my Junque Garden had a bit of the pastel look of Monet’s Giverny. It flowed in green with bursts of pink, purple and yellow from those other flowers whose names escaped me.
The garden was bold and stunning and peaceful right there in screaming afternoon sun and bordered by decaying railroad ties. It was the most beautiful and mesmerizing garden on our place – Railroad Tie Section. Only a genius could have designed this.
And the ‘Diamond Frost’! My God that frail-looking beauty owned the garden. It is thriving in rocky soil in late afternoon sun. No longer will it be relegated to containers and wedding and funeral bouquets.
In fact, the always modest, low-key Proven Winters website gave ‘Diamond Frost’ a chance to speak her own mind:
I want to thank my parents, my breeder and especially the millions of fans who have made me the Most Award-Winning Plant in Proven Winners History.
At my 2005 debut I was just a new 12 to 18 inch Proven WinNERS Euphorbia…you later praised my mounded habit and how well I tolerate heat and drought…If I could, I would keep you with me in full sun to part shade forever…”
Or at least in what will be my expanded 2020 Junque Garden.

Meet the 2017 Holiday Style Challenge Bloggers
Meet the 2017 Holiday Style Challenge Bloggers
We’re excited to announce our partners participating in the 2017 Holiday Style Challenge. We gave these talented bloggers a variety of holiday décor from The Home Depot and challenged them to to create a festive space unique to their style.
We can’t wait to show you all their incredible work! Read more for each designer’s bio and follow along to see how each of their 2017 Holiday Style Challenge spaces turned out.
First Row
Chári Herndon of Chic Home Style is a Certified Interior Decorator and Home Stager. She has always had a passion for decorating. She eventually decided to take the plunge into the new-age hobby called blogging. Her husband thought it would be a way to turn her love for decorating and styling into a hobby. Chári and her husband are both from Atlanta. After moving to Florida, they then settled in Texas, where Chári re-decorated their apartment in uptown Houston. When Chári isn’t busy working with clients, she enjoys working at Tiffany & Co.
Nina Hendrick, a self-taught designer, originally founded her blog and company Enchanting Details in 2010. Today, Nina Hendrick Design Company, LLC is a thriving business and blog. It covers a wide range of topics, including interior and graphic design, organizing, and celebrations. Nina loves helping shape happy homes. She has been featured by Better Homes and Gardens, Country Living, Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Today, DIY Network, The Huffington Post, Bob Vila and more! “Down time” includes tackling projects with her husband, Mack, in their 1980s fixer-upper. Her best accomplishments are her children; Logan, Cooper and Lyla. The Hendricks love visiting their lake cabin and playing on the beach with their golden retriever Lucy. In rare quiet moments, Nina can be found with a book, cozy blanket and a warm mug of black coffee (or even a glass of wine!).
Katie, the blogger behind Addicted 2 DIY, began her DIY journey with her husband after buying their forever home. The projects never end. She started her blog as a way share with and encourage others to take on their own DIY projects and do so on a budget. Her goal is to take people outside of their comfort zone and show them that just about anyone can DIY.
Second Row
Leslie created Deeply Southern Home to share creative, affordable ideas for updating your home with style, livable beauty and purpose. Often, these ideas include building projects with detailed instructions and plans for the designs. She hopes that you will find joy in creating a happier home using your own two hands. She encourages readers to try to something new with every project! Her motto is, “You never know you can’t do something unless you try.”
Gloribell has always loved design. Ever since she was a little girl, design has been the main motor in her life. Most of her background knowledge comes from being a graphic designer for more than 15 years. But because of her natural design skills, she had to look for other ways to translate and communicate how she felt about colors, symmetry, decor and every little detail in between. Now that she’s become an Interior Decorator/Designer, her new-found love is more than a hobby. Check out her blog Know How She Does It.
Darnetha is a wife and mother to three amazingly active bambini. Her blog, ChippaSunshine, is a place for her to document her journey through life. Darnetha’s passion is for a simple life where she lives in the moment and enjoys. Here you will read everything from basic life happenings to decorating, cooking, inspirations and DIY projects.
Third Row
Laura Stewart is the owner and creator of the blog Junque Cottage. Before publishing her first post, Laura spent years teaching herself how to tackle DIY and home renovation projects. Through these projects, she discovered her love of design and home decor. Laura’s main focus on her blog is to prove that anyone can decorate and with a little knowledge and willingness to learn, you can tackle those home projects yourself. When not blogging or remodeling, Laura enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter. She enjoys living in the heart of Texas on their recently purchased farm.
Sara first began her blog, Twelve on Main, as a creative outlet, prompted on a whim by her husband. Now, her main goal is to inspire and encourage others to DIY. She believes there is potential in everyone, and wants to show that it is possible to any project, whether simple or complex, in their homes.
Kendra Williams, co-owner of Momtique, blogs about her passion for painting furniture, collecting antiques and DIY projects on a budget. Kendra’s love for decorating began when she became discontented with her minimalist, modern home style. Once she found a love of thrifting, antiquing and DIY, she began to transition her decor to French chic one treasure at a time. She uses her current experience in her rented 1,050 square foot 1950s track home in Sacramento, CA. She wants to encourage and empower renters to create a beautiful home with carefully selected furniture and decor. Kendra also participates in a monthly vintage market. There, she is able to pass on her love of painted furniture, antiques and vintage items. If she’s not antiquing, transforming furniture, or doing a DIY project, she’s spending time with her husband and three young boys.
Fourth Row
Sisters Meg and Steph, owners of Do It Yourself Divas LLC, inspire others to create the life they dream of on a budget. Their tutorials have been featured on the Today Show, The Chew, Fisher-Price and more. Their mission is to help others realize that if they can dream it, they can DIY it! With seven years of blogging experience and millions of page views, they are a go-to source for all things DIY. From sewing swimmable mermaid tails to remodeling a kitchen, they have a tutorial for everything. When not creating, Meg and Steph can be found spending time with their families, usually trying to decide what’s for dinner, folding 20 loads of laundry, and trying to remember to water the dying plants.
Classy Clutter began in July 2010 when two moms were itching to share their creative projects and ideas with the world. Mallory and Savannah both grew up in Mesa, Arizona and come from big families. They have known each other since high school. Even their husbands are great friends! The Classy Clutter husbands became friends in high school, too, and both played on the same football team (Go Toros!). After both married, they spent a lot of time together on double dates with their new husbands. Now fast forward eight years later and they now have eight kids between the two of them! Mallory has four boys (Carter, Parker, Tanner and Palmer). Savannah has three girls (Leesie, Millie and Adelaide) and a boy (Ryder).

Rock Gardens 101: Design Tips and Techniques for a Serene Outdoor Oasis
I love rocks. On every vacation or trip to the beach, I love to gather some rocks, shells, and even driftwood to memorialize the trip. For me, there are so many happy memories in those little jars and apothecary bottles I save them in. I also take a tiny piece of paper and write the…
