Can't decide if I want to picture Dracula climbing down the walls like a lizard as him going so fast his cape stays in place like it should, or gravity wins and his cape has fallen down over his head and he can't see shit and Jonathan has to struggle not to laugh at the same time as having the horrifying realisation that he's being held prisoner by an actual monster and not just a regular creepy old man

dracula daily literary analysis: mina’s introduction

around the time in which dracula was written, the concept of women and womanhood was being redefined and revolutionized - so much so that there was even a name for this phenomenon of female power: the new woman.

the new woman was a feminist archetype used to describe independent women who were feminists, educated, career-driven, and sought to make a space for themselves outside of the home sphere. mina is introduced in dracula by talking of her career as a school mistress’s assistant, her hopes at getting better at stenography and typewriting, and equating herself to a journalist; mina is basically The New Woman archetype personified. yes, she still cares for and loves her fiancé, but it’s obvious that she has her own drives and goals, and that she is educated and independent.

as the book continues (and if you’d like to think about these things as you read), i think it would be beneficial to pay attention to how mina is treated by the narrative and other characters. because she is the archetype of the developing modern, independent woman, her place in the story matters a whole lot, and keeping an eye on how her power (or lack thereof) impact the narrative may just mean keeping an eye on how women were dealt with and thought of at the time

Ok so I know we're all ragging on Jonny-boy for him watching all this crazy shit go down and immediately bringing up something else like the pretty mountains or the fact that he can't shave now but IN HIS DEFENSE, that's a pretty common reaction to seeing something freaky or alarming go down that you can't do anything about.

He can't allow himself to be super scared of Dracula going for his neck because when he did freak out all that happened is that he learned he can't get out of the castle. There's nowhere to run. Dracula clearly doesn't want him to know he's alone or that something's up, so he pretends it's all cool and gets mad about the mirror instead because that's an easier emotion to process than "Oh god I'm trapped here with a man with no reflection."

If we're going to rag on anyone, it clearly should be Mr. Dracula because oh my god, this dude is SO BAD at pretending to be a Normal-Ass Man. Dracula didn't notice for a second that Jonathan spent a couple hours making a mad dash around the castle trying door handles. He walked up to Jonathan shaving despite the fact that the man was shaving with a mirror, leaving himself in full view for Jonny to notice he doesn't have a reflection. "Ah yes," he thinks, "I've tricked the man into thinking I have servants perfectly!" Meanwhile, Jonathan's watching him through the cracked open door, completely unnoticed.

#dracula daily #one time at my first job as a cashier at a small shop i had just shut off all the lights and was waiting for the owner to get there #because i wasn't trusted to have the keys for the front door and cash register yet #and while i was walking up to the front to wait for the owner #i heard something SCRATCHING at the walls of the store next to us #and froze #i was scared obviously and i thought about leaving but then i went 'but the owner isnt here yet! i cant leave!' #so i stood around in the dark waiting for the scratching to stop and texted my friends about it #then after it stopped and the owner came i left and bought a chocolate bar and tried not to think about it #and went back to work next shift

Yes! And if I remember correctly they are found in the Wailing Way and the Shrine of the Apostates (also known as Heretic’s Grave) both in castle B, which is near where the Smiling Statue (which looks a lot like Carmilla) can be found. :3

Also, the Energy Circle being found here, over a particular seemingly important marble coffin no less, is interesting considering it’s the whip upgrade that lets Juste spin the whip like Simon can in CV4 (albeit in way more neat of a circle lol).

Also on the topic of items, there’s a lot of interesting furniture descriptions too.

The Hero Statue and the Tall Clock seem pretty obvious. Simon would’ve been the most recent hero of the time and really the first of his family to get very much respect for it. The clock just directly mentions Juste’s ‘granddad’ so like yeah.

The Smiling Statue just straight up looks like Carmilla’s mask and is probably a Jojo reference since Carmilla is one lmao anyway but I’m not sure why she’s called a Goddess here, pretty interesting. These other two just had some weird descriptions of a presence in general.

The only thing I can’t figure out is who the Sage Statue is even supposed to be. The other two seem to have a pattern, so I’d expect like a Skull Statue or something to be Death/Dracula (as he was a skeleton ghost in Simon’s Quest) or something, but no it’s just some old guy. Maybe he’s looking so smug because he knows he’s out of place and messing with us lol. And the names of the statues also have some kind of relation to who they are (Carmilla smiles, Simon is regarded as a legendary hero) but the word ‘Sage’ just kinda doesn’t relate to any character I can think of other than like idk one of the random old guy towns people, but why would he get a statue? It’s odd, hopefully I’ll figure it out eventually tho.

Harmony of Dissonance has a lot of really interesting details in it, especially Simon’s Quest references, that make sense considering it takes place right after it and revolves around the plot of Maxim trying to recreate the glory of that last Dracula battle from it while not knowing the context behind why Simon did that, so they’re pretty intertwined in that way, it’s really cool :D!!!

I should probably make more general long analysis posts about these kinds of things sometime if I can actually gather everything into one place, cause this kind of random detail gathering stuff is really fun hehe >:3c. This also kinda just ended up a rant that left the topic and went to others so whoopsie (XwX)
