#TimeWarpTuesday meets #TaxidermyTuesday ~ A taxidermy sculpture of mine that was exhibited at renowned Hollywood gallery La Luz De Jesus in 2010 at the world's second-ever rogue taxidermy art exhibition.
The world’s very first rogue taxidermy exhibition was held 6 years prior in Minneapolis, an event orchestrated by two friends and myself. Both shows garnered generous press with the second show getting picked up by AFP, the 3rd largest news agency in the world. As a result, coverage of the show spread to places as far away as Japan. Link here to read about the birth of the genre of Rogue Taxidermy and for an explanation of what type of work it encompasses. You might be surprised.

TITLE: Turkelopteryx MATERIALS: carved urethane foam, clay, wire, mâché, squirrel hide, turkey head and feet.

#TaxidermySculpture ~ My most recent reverie of fur and feather.
I wanted to create an object that felt like it had been transported from a time gone by, but one that also felt equally phantasmal. I have always been captivated by Art Nouveau and Art Deco, which is where I drew my inspiration for the style of this griffin. I thought a video would be the best way to convey the fluid Nouveau-esque lines of its tail and curled wings. The idea for the arched feather antennae came from stylized Deco-era renditions of gazelle with their exaggerated flowing horns, a popular motif at that time. Genuine pearl eyes and 24 karat gold are among the details that add to the elegance of this piece.

TITLE: Absinthe DIMENSIONS: 21” x 12” x 12” MATERIALS: Animal skins over sculpted clay armature
The iridescent green undertones of the black feathers inspired the title – "Absinthe". The purported hallucinogenic effect of its green liquor namesake is said to conjure figments and fantasies, which earned the anise-flavored spirit the nickname “The Green Fairy”.

UP FOR ADOPTION ~ The only thing better than a puppy under a Christmas tree is a unicorn under a Christmas tree. This is one of my early pieces that formerly resided in my personal collection. To free up space I recently sent it to a gallery to find it a new home. It’s priced what it would have sold for back when I first made it, thus it’s less expensive than my more recent works. This creates a unique opportunity for collectors working within a budget. Even better, this piece is also on sale right now through December 24th. Interested parties please contact Lovetts Gallery in Tulsa. Link here for pricing and to view all pieces I currently have available. Continue reading about this piece below.
TITLE: Zell’s Baby DIMENSIONS: 20”x 22"x 9” MATERIALS: Stillborn lamb, deer antler, handmade leather Celtic collar
This taxidermy sculpture is dedicated to a man named Oberon Zell-Ravenheart, a breeder of living unicorns. You read that right. They really do exist. He even owns a patent on them. If a real unicorn isn’t weird enough as it is, the process by which he created his man-made animals is even weirder. The single horn wasn’t achieved through selective breeding as you might be tempted to think. Truth is stranger than fiction, folks. I guarantee it will be worth your effort to visit this URL and read the interview with him and see photos of his babies. When you do, don’t forget to click on the link that the interview provides to his patent diagrams. They will having you leaning in for a closer look and scratching your chin. http://www.sideshowworld.com/9-ms-pi/interview-OZ.html...
When I was a small child I actually got to see one of his unicorns at the Renaissance Festival and even got to touch its horn. The experience was absolutely magical and made such an impression on me that it has stayed with me for my entire life. This taxidermy sculpture is a re-creation of that particular animal based on my childhood memories of it.

#ThrowbackThursday ~ Celebrating its 7th birthday this weekend,  “Jabbercocky”, a creature born as the cameras rolled. The creation of this piece was televised in 2016 in a PBS micro-doc about my work. Check out my previous 2 posts for more backstory and to watch the clip.

AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE ~
If you have been contemplating acquiring one of my taxidermy sculptures this might be your last chance; I have retired two strains of my work. The piece pictured here, titled Chernobyl Chicken, has been in my personal collection since its creation 15 years ago, but I've decided to sell it in order to free up some space. (Visit WWW.SARINA-BREWER.COM for availability and pricing). I've been moving away from my hybrid/composite taxidermy animals in order to concentrate on other areas of my work. I stopped creating sideshow-themed freak animals many years ago. Most recently, in 2018, I also stopped taking commissions for mythological and cryptozoological beasts. So, if you enjoy either of the aforementioned strains of my work, now is the time to purchase a piece because the window is rapidly closing as I sell off what remains. Once they are gone, that's the end of them. There won't be others like them in the future. The future holds some equally compelling, but very different, types of animal resurrections. I encourage you to browse my recently revamped website and explore my current endeavors ~

The Ivory Griffin, a taxidermy sculpture I created in 2008. This piece is part of a series of griffins that dates back to 2004. Like the others in the series, this one is posed in a traditional griffin stance and mimics historical depictions of the creature which were often poised with an extended arm clawing at the air. Check out my two prior posts for examples of my other griffins. Visit my website for more of my work ~

One of my recent taxidermy sculptures. A piece about introspection, extrospection, appearances, facades, reverie, illusion, realization, denial, reality, discontentment, and the often dark inner recesses of the human psyche. TITLE: "Chasing Demons" MATERIALS: Taxidermy squirrels and antique ormolu vanity mirror. I have been incorporating animal remains into my art since the late 1980's when I was working on my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. The foundation of my work includes a strict "waste not, want not" policy and the use of only humanely acquired animals. As with many of the animals I work with, these two squirrels were donated to me. The pelts of both squirrels were severely damaged and unusable for regular taxidermy mounts. The melanistic (black) squirrel was roadkill and its rear end was not salvageable due to road-rash. The albino squirrel had an extreme case of mange; its head and chest were virtually bald. So I combined what good parts remained into a single taxidermy sculpture. There are pockets of these color mutations around the country where they are more common than in other areas, but throughout the rest of the United States both are a relatively rare occurrence. According to one study, on average only one out of every 100,000 squirrels are albino and one out of every 10,000 are melanistic. I have only had a handful of each come my way throughout my career. Because they are such a precious acquisition in my world, I knew I couldn’t let either of these two beautiful creatures go to waste. More at www.Sarina-Brewer.com ©2016_Sarina_Brewer.
