F-14 FUN FACT OF THE DAY #25
There’s a reason Top Gun’s opening scene was a night carrier landing. When they talked with fighter pilots about the most harrowing and terrifying aspect of being a fighter pilot, nearly every one responded with night carrier landings. That’s because F-14 Tomcat pilots land aircraft at night with no ambient light and little to no headlights. They’d be so high on adrenaline after they’d landed that their knees (and entire body) would be shaking.
Check out this video of F/A-18 pilots landing on an aircraft carrier at night with an INSANE pitching deck due to rough seas. One pilot even shows the intensity of the shaking after their landing.

The Fleur De Lis (sometimes spelled Fleur De Lys) or flower of the lily is a decorative symbol widely used in European symbolism, particularly by the French, as well as by numerous other nations and organizations around the world. The United States Navy (USN) Blue Angels are the oldest military aerobatic team in the United States, formed in 1946. Currently flying the Boeing F/A-18 “Super Hornet,” their 11th airplane since their inception, they perform a maneuver named for the iconic Fleur De Lis symbol. It is one of their signature maneuvers, involving all 6 aircraft, and certainly a crowd favorite. This image captures the team just after breaking in to the maneuver at the 2022 Minden Aviation Roundup in Minden Nevada.

martin-baker (which supplies ejection seats to the f-18 among other aircraft) has a “tie club” for the 7,000+ pilots whose lives have been saved by their ejection seats
and i just KNOW that after he retires this is the only tie maverick ever wears out of the house
he wears it over his t-shirts sometimes

F-14 FUN FACT OF THE DAY #16
The F-16 Fighting Falcon and F/A-18 Hornet came in both single-seat and two-seat variants, primarily utilized as trainer aircraft. Unlike the two-seat variants of those aircraft, the F-14 Tomcat never had flight controls in the backseat, meaning the back seater could not take over flying the jet in cases of emergency. There were no F-14 Tomcat trainers.
Instead, they'd do a "flip flop hop." They'd have the new pilot sit in the back after someone "fluffed" the aircraft, aka ran through the start up procedures with another pilot as the new pilot was not trained to be a RIO. Then they would watch their instructor go through certain maneuvers, then they would switch and the trainee would perform the same maneuvers.

The Diamondbacks conduct carrier-based air strikes and strike force escort missions, as well as ship, battle group, and intelligence collection operations. The Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 5 is participating with the Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy in Maritime Counter Special Operations Exercise (MCSOFEX) to strengthen interoperability and training. The U.S. routinely conducts CSG operations in the waters around the ROK to exercise maritime maneuvers, strengthen the U.S.-ROK alliance, and improve regional security.
