So I listened to every Eurovision 2024 song and here are my rankings and reviews!
1. Slovenia: Veronika-Raiven 10/10
Holy shit, my jaw is on the floor! This is easily my favorite song this year with only Mustii coming close. This girl’s voice is insane. I am obsessed with dark songs and…this climax. It’s actually insane. The background vocals had me climbing up the walls, this is INSANE. I JUST WISH THE SONG WAS LONGER! It’s so good that my only complaint is wanting more of it!
2. Belgium: Before the Party’s Over-Mustii 10/10
Holy shit, this is incredible! I have a strong affinity for dark pop and songs that build in intensity over time. It starts out as a fairly by the numbers ballad but gains a lot of momentum. Mustii has incredible vocals and the atmosphere is insane. The lyrics aren’t anything special but the delivery and mood of the song more than makes up for it. That final chorus with the choir legitimately gives me chills.
3. Norway: Ulveham-Gåte 10/10
Okay, this is incredible. Mixing old Norse folk songs with a hard rock vibe is excellent and the vocals are incredible! This is the perfect blend of beautifully traditional and kickass! This is another band I’ll definitely be checking out after this!
4. Switzerland: The Code-Nemo 10/10
Seeing a nonbinary artist making a song that’s blatantly about queer joy makes me absolutely thrilled, and the blend of rap and opera is insane. Their vocals are absolutely insane and I really hope this wins.
5. San Marino: 11:11-Megara 10/10
This is my first introduction to Megara and wow, I’m obsessed lol. I love hard rock especially female-fronted and I’ll definitely be checking this band out. This is just a really kickass hard rock banger with some electronic elements! There’s not much else to say expect the flamenco breakdown was really cool and actually fits well.
6. Latvia: Hollow-Dons 10/10
Yeah, I love dark stuff with this kind of vibe, it’s right up my alley. (Daylight and Arcade do this sound BADLY) this song does it WELL and I give a lot of credit to Dons for this insane performance. I could see this shrinking on me but for now, it’s hitting the spot! Anthemic shit like this is my cup of tea!
7. Serbia: Ramonda-Teya Dora 10/10
As far as ballads go, this is about as perfect as you can get. Teya’s voice is gorgeous, and the instrumental is perfectly spare leading up to a big crescendo. The final chorus gives me chills with the incredible layered vocals.
8. Czechia: Pedestal-Aiko 9.5/10
We love pop punk girlies! This song is so fun. It’s a great kickass self empowerment anthem about not needing no man! I’m a big fan of this sound and Aiko has a nice voice. The only reason it’s not a 10 is because I find the song a bit short.
9. Luxembourg: Fighter-TALI 9.5/10
Welcome back, Luxembourg! This is pretty much a perfect pop song and totally how you do a pop song lol. It’s catchy without being annoying, has all the production elements in the right place, a mix of languages, and a great performance by TALI. This one won’t get out of my head!
10. Croatia: Rim Tim Tagi Dim-Baby Lasagna 9/10
This song is very fun and peak Eurovision to me. The energy reminds me a lot of Kaarija last year. It’s extremely campy while still sounding pretty awesome and having that hard rock chorus. The anxiety of growing up and moving out is real so even if the lyrics are cheesy I enjoy them quite a bit. It’s just a bit cheesy for me to listen to regularly but it is such a banger.
11. Poland: Grito-iolanda 9/10
I’m not much for ballads but this one has some nice swell to it and a really pleasant melody as well as great vocals! What’s not to love?
12. Finland: No Rules!-Windows95Man 9/10
As goofy as this is, I can’t help but love it. It puts a huge smile on my face and it has a nice positive message. Also the whole Windows95 aesthetic is awesome lol.
13. Ireland: Doomsday Blue-Bambie Thug 9/10
Okay, yeah, thanks for the discovery! This gives me BIG Ashnikko and TeZAtalks vibes and I am here for it. Also more nonbinary representation! Definitely the most unique song of the year! I love the aggro rap and hard rock juxtaposed with the acoustic chorus. Very cool!
14. Estonia: 5MINUST, Puuluup-(nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi 8.5/10
This title is way too long lol. I had no idea how to rank this, but yeah, this is fun and just embodies Eurovision for me! It’s such a bop!
15. Albania: TiTAN-Besa 8.5/10
I love everything about this from Besa’s vocals to the anthemic mood, to the handclaps to the synth explosion of the final chorus. My only problem is how the first part of the song is kind of boring and the lyrics are woefully generic.
16. Azerbaijan: Özünle Apar-Fahree, İlkin Dovletov 8/10
This song is really gorgeous. The vocals are beautiful, it has a relaxing ethnic vibe, I love the stings and backing vocals, and this definitely strikes me as a unique entry!
17. Moldova: The Middle-Natalia Barbu 8/10
I’m not really sure why people hate this one. It’s really unique and has a great orchestral vibe to it. Sure, the lyrics are generic, but the vocals are great and I love the combination of the more orchestral vibe and the dance beat. It’s a really nice vibe!
18. Australia: One Mikali (One Blood)-Electric Fields 8/10
I like this one a lot. It has a nice message and a really great crowd pleaser vibe. The vocals are great and it’s an electronic sound with traditional and ethnic elements. I really love the synth riff, that’s some delicious stuff. I just find it a bit cheesy to be one of my top choices.
19. France: Mon Amor-Slimane 8/10
I’m not usually much for ballads, and this isn’t something I’d listen to all that often, but this man has some pipes and his vocals absolutely carry this song.
20. Italy: La Noia-Angelina Mango 8/10
This is a really fun ethnic song with good vocals and a nice instrumental that makes me want to dance. I like these type of songs a lot.
21. Cyrpus: Liar-Silia Kapsis 8/10
This one is strange for me, since it has tropical house elements and is extremely generic which I both hate. This kind of reminds me of Solo from last year, but better. Idk what it is about this girl and the song but it’s so catchy and I have a lot of fun with this despite its shortcomings.
22. Armenia: Jako-Ladanavia 8/10
This is probably the most ethnic sounding song on the list and I find it to be quite repetitive. This seems more like a novelty song than one I’d listen to a lot, but I can’t deny how fun and upbeat it is! This is a very unique entry in the lineup!
23. Greece: ZARI-Marina Satti 8/10
I was not feeling this at first, but it’s really grown on me. It’s incredibly infectious. Yes, it can get annoying after a while, but I listen to a lot of noisy music so I’m sort of immune. I like the ethnic sound and party vibe but I do think it has the potential to shrink on me really fast.
24. Malta: Loop-Sara Bonnici 8/10
This is a really solid and fun pop song with nice vocals, there’s not much else to say about it!
25. Georgia: Firefighter-Nutsa 7.5/10
I really wish I liked this more. Iru was absoltuely robbed last year and I can’t help but feel that this one also has very generic lyrics and messy production. However Nutsa is a good perfomer and I really like the “I see it in the air” chanting and the song has a nice build to the chorus. Considering I listen to a lot of K-pop with similarly messy production, this doesn’t bother me nearly as much as it would for some.
26. Netherlands: Europapa-Joost 7/10
This one has grown on me a lot since I first heard it. It kind gives me similar catchy energy to “Who the Hell is Edgar” from last year and it’s a fun song about Europe with a fun beat that I enjoy.
27. Ukraine: Teresa & Maria-aloyna aloyna, Jerry Heil 7/10
I think this song has a great message and an absolutely gorgeous chorus, however I find the rap to be very out of place and it sounds like an entirely different song to me and really takes me out of the experience.
28. United Kingdom: Dizzy-Olly Alexander 6.5/10
This is one that I can see a lot of people liking, and it isn’t bad! It’s not a nice chill electronic vibe and I wouldn’t turn it off if it came on. I just don’t find it all that interesting, sorry!
29. Austria: We Will Rave-Kaleen 6.5/10
Austria went with 00s eurodance this year and the song is pretty decent. The title is certainly accurate as this would go off hard at a rave. I think it will be a crowd favorite. I don’t find the vocals to be that interesting and the song is incredibly repetitive, however.
30. Poland: The Tower-LUNA 6/10
This one is also really boring for me. It’s a nice synthpop song, but not much else. It’s not dark or exciting enough for me to latch onto. Also LUNA’s vocals remind me of Halsey which is cool I guess.
31. Germany: Always on the Run-ISAAK 6/10
This feels like a very generic Imagine Dragons-type song. ISAAK has a good voice and the song is very anthemic and uplifting, but I don’t like how generic the lyrics and melody are.
32. Denmark: SAND-Saba 6/10
Another woefully generic but well-produced entry. Saba’s vocals are quite good, but yeah, it can’t get much more generic than this.
33. Sweden: Unforgettable:-Marcus & Martinus 5.5/10
I unfortunately find this song very forgettable. It’s just generic evil woman lyrics, the vocals aren’t anything special, and while the beat is fun, there’s just not much to come back to.
34. Spain: ZORRA-Nebulossa 5/10
This song sounds like early 2010s schlock and is just not that well produced and the performer doesn’t do much to elevate it.
35. Lithuania: Luktelk-Silvester Belt 5/10
This one is just pretty generic to me. I could see why people like it or find it fun, but I’m not getting much from this.
36. Iceland: Scared of Heights-Hera Björk 4/10
Man, this is so generic. I don’t even know what to say other than that this sounds like a 2009 song and that’s not a compliment. Yes her voice is good, but you can’t get more generic than this shit.

Elli's Postcard From Benidorm Fest
Elli's Postcard From Benidorm Fest. As the confetti settles from 2024’s Benidorm Fest, Ellie Chalkley looks back on a wonderful experience at Spain’s National Final.
Hello Internet, I’m sitting under a palm tree in the sun, enjoying a competitively priced alcohol-free cerveza tostada and writing you a postcard. Wish you were here! Ready for Benidorm Fest 2024 (Photo: Ellie Chalkey) Actually, there’s more. The last National Final I went to before the pandemic was Finland’s UMK 2020, a final unwise dash through airports and packed halls during the frightening…

Hellooo, thank you so much for everything you're doing for this fandom <3
I was wondering if you know any fics that are exes with benefits or enemies with benefits?
Thank you so much!!!
Hi! You can check our #enemies to lovers tag for more fics like this. Here are some more to add to the collection...
smash your competition, baby by KissMyAsthma (E)
Aziraphale and Crowley compete for the title of their country’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. Being rivals seems to only heat up the atmosphere between them, and when the excitement and adrenaline after their performances take over, they work off some of their post-performance high together.
On the Way Home From Rome by Caedmon (E)
Aziraphale is on the way home from Rome, looking forward to crawling into his own bed in London, when he meets an attractive - and maddening - man.
…and your enemies closer by UnproblematicMe (E)
Crowley is glad the world doesn't end. But it gets boring sometimes and the only immortal beings on Earth besides him are now the Antichrist and the annoying emissary of Heaven who has been a thorn in Crowley's side from the beginning.
Bare Knuckles, Rose Thorns, and Split Grape Skins by midnightxink (E)
The year is 1880. The Wild West is in full swing. A slick, chaos-wielding demon runs from the Law, jumps from town to town dealing in crime. Only, the Law catches up with him in the form of one hard-tack, no nonsense angelic bounty hunter. Their subsequent journey reveals much about the workings of an institution that they both stake claims to, and each other.
Intermezzo by FeralTuxedo (E)
Music critic Aziraphale Fell is trying to break into the world of television, when he is signed to make a documentary about former-rockstar-turned-composer Anthony Crowley. It’s been eleven years since Aziraphale’s disastrous review of Crowley’s debut opera nipped his classical music career in the bud. He can only hope that Crowley will get over his admittedly justified grudge to make the TV show a success. A classical music sex comedy. Yes, really.
Fifty-Two Blue by bendycello (E)
It would be a gross understatement to say that Crowley simply didn't like Aziraphale. He was posh and stuffy and arrogant, and Crowley couldn't figure out why everyone else in the program liked him so much. It hardly mattered; they were competitors, and Crowley didn't need to make friends to become a surgeon. It takes several unleasant encounters, the excessive use of house plants as a coping mechanism, and getting stuck in an elevator for Crowley to start reconsidering his priorities. Or... Crowley and Aziraphale are surgical interns with competitive streaks a mile wide each, and they really do not like each other at all. Until they do.

UMK 2024 Song Review - Sara Siipola
The hype is very real around Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK), the Finnish national selection for Eurovision and the race to Malmö continues with a ballad this time!
Sara Siippola - Paskana
youtube
Sara Siipola is fairly a new name in the sky of Finnish female artists. She kind of popped out of nowhere making a record deal with Sony Music in 2019 and releasing her first singles which were fairly successful. She also released her debut album "Kaunis Kun Itken" two years later and last year she was seen in popular music tv-show "Tähdet, Tähdet".
Still never heard of of her before and the artist announcement did nothing to me.
Tumblr media
Paskana is power song that gives no hope. It's very raw lyrically and vocally.
It's a modern ballad with immediate hook. The song itself is not a traditional power ballad but does instrumentally push its boundaries. The electronic beat has 80's sound which also reminds many of the Russian girl duo t.A.T.u's sound. R'n'b beat separates it from an average ESC ballad and makes this super easy to listen.
Sara's voice can be compared to Amy Winehouse's being capable of interpreting the painful text brilliantly. The topic of being "paskana" which is translated as fucking wreck, is easily relatable. Social media quickly filled on Monday night with heartfelt comments from people around the world crying and feeling this song.
This is simply captivating - you can't pass this without stopping to listen to this and feeling what she sings. This will translate across language barriers.
ESC doesn't allow swearing so in case of winning UMK Sara would have to find another title for her song which might be a difficult task. There have been hopes of her translating this into English or pieces of it but I do hope this masterpiece remained in Finnish. Also this would differ quite a lot from our previous ESC entries. The last time we heard a female ballad from Finland was in 2017 with NormaJohn.
In a scenario where she didn't win UMK she might be the next Bess (Ram pam pam, 2022) or Kuumaa (Ylivoimainen, 2023) which either were the winning acts but made the biggest hits of their careers with the help of UMK. Reactions have been positive everywhere you go and her UMK videoclip has already been viewed over 240 000 (more than Sexmane) times. She's on her way to stardom!
What do you think of the third UMK24 track and would you vote for Sara Siipola to go all the way to Malmö? UMK final takes place on February 10th!

Eurovision is only a few weeks away now and normally by this time I’d have started posting my full ranking. However, I’m sitting this year out. Rather than leave this blog hanging, I decided to post this as a wrap up to the 2024 season. Since I’d listened to nearly all of the competing songs over the past few months, and had a rough idea already of how I’d rank them, here’s what my top 10 would probably be for this year, just to have it on record:
10. Australia – One Milkali (One Blood) 9. Ukraine – Teresa & Maria 8. Lithuania – Luktelk 7. Croatia – Rim Tim Tagi Dim 6. Portugal – Grito 5. Ireland – Doomsday Blue 4. Estonia – (Nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi 3. Switzerland – The Code 2. San Marino – 11:11 1. Norway – Ulveham
I love Eurovision – it’s one of my main hobbies and I love the music, the spectacle, and the fun of the competition.  But I can’t take part in it right now. I had a lot of fun with national final season this year, and with plenty of good internally selected songs too, I honestly think this had the potential to be a fantastic year. Maybe one day I’ll return to this set of 36 songs and give them the proper review they deserve, but for now, this is the last I’ll be talking about this year.

Israel has threatened to withdraw from the Eurovision Song Contest if organisers try to censor its 2024 song entry. Eden Golan, who was announced as the country’s representative earlier this month, was due to sing “October Rain” at the contest in Malmo, Sweden, in May. However, a row has now erupted after leaked lyrics showed that the song appears to reference the 7 October attack by Hamas, according to the Israel Hayom newspaper. The Eurovision Broadcasting Union (EBU), which runs the annual competition, describes the song contest as a non-political event, and maintains its right to disqualify contestants who break this rule. Israel says it will not compete in the competition this year if its lyrics are not approved. The song is currently being reviewed by the EBU.
the audacity of israeli institutions. to not even try to put a lid on current events, but to insist that israel is the victim in this conflict. throwing a fit about how you're not allowed to do that when there's already objections to your presence in the competition.

My AO3 Fanfics
Updates can be slow with what my adhdass brain decides to place focus on but rest assured I aim to complete all my fics. I'll try to keep this post up to date with where I'm at with them.
AO3 link for all of my works: @bogteats
Currently working on:
[2024-03-12] reverse the script ch5 (writing...slowly)
In-progress
[M] reverse the script [4/?] - Actor/Celeb AU
Or, in which, Enid is ecstatic when she manages to bag the coveted lead role for the highly-anticipated reboot TV show of The Abrams Family as dark and broody titular character, Winter Abrams. If only she didn’t butt heads so much with her on-screen roommate, but off-screen, rival-ish, co-star.
Working on ch5 with bits here and there for ch5+. Chapter outline is...ongoing constant review lol.
[M] sink your teeth into me (and i'll do the same) [1/7] - Vampire AU
Or, in which, Wednesday finds herself making a deal and living with a rather unconventional vampire roommate.
Bits of ch2 done. Have ideas where it will go but need to figure out rest of outline. Prolly 7-8 chapters.
[E] our immeasurable ties that bind [8/19] - ABO/Omegaverse AU
Or, in which, Enid’s new life under a hidden identity is disrupted when she’s reunited with her child’s uninformed sire.
Finally completed story outline with chapters and rest of planning. Prolly 19 chaps but who knows 🥴
Upcoming (not posted yet)
[E] TBA (the nature of idiosyncrasies pt. 2) [0/1] - ABO/Omegaverse AU
One-shot set post pt. 1, or two-shot if it grows too long. Half-ish done. It is not half done at all lol.
[E] TBA (the nature of idiosyncrasies ABO swap AU retelling) [0/?] - ABO/Omegaverse AU
Plan is an absolute mess but it's vaguely there with a whole bunch of thoughts and ideas. Ch1 is nowhere near done.
Completed
Since I don't have a beta reader, all mistakes are mine and completed fics will undergo ongoing fixing of typos etc. whenever I spot them or have time.
[T] parce que toi et moi, ça fonctionne (même si ça ne devrait pas) [8/8] - Eurovision/Celeb AU
Or, in which, aspiring singer-songwriter, Enid Sinclair, tries to do more than win the biggest international song contest for the glory of France when she meets other front runner entry, Los Locos Addams, from Spain.
[E] the nature of idiosyncrasies [18/18] - ABO/Omegaverse AU
Or, in which, after Pugsley destroys a decent chunk of the Addams’ residence, they take this opportunity to do some redecorating. Upon recommendation by their mutual friend Eugene, Enid takes the project, not realizing it’s the home of her high school, kind-of, crush.
[E] hello there, it's me, the bull in a china shop [1/1] - 5+1 fic
Or, five times Enid tries to seduce Wednesday and the one time she doesn’t.
[T] what was i made for (and does it even matter) [7/7] - Christmas AU
Or, in which, Christmas elf Enid tries to win the ultimate promotion to Santa’s personal assistant by fulfilling one of the most difficult Christmas wishes: finding love for a human Grinch.

Eurovision Fact #571:
Tumblr media
The co-writer of singer Bashar Murad's Söngvakeppnin song, Einar Stefánsson, has called for an independent review of the votes for the Super Final of the contest. Fans reported having difficulty voting for Murad during the competition, as the phone number for voting via SMS would redirect to Hera Björk's number. Also, if fans attempted to vote with the call-in number, Murad's number was blocked or marked as spam for some people.
RÚV has not responded to the call for an investigation, but they have admitted there was an error in the voting for SMS votes for both singers, and "neither [singer] received the SMS votes they were due from the app."
The broadcaster also noted that the number of SMS votes was so small in comparison to call-in votes, that removing them would not have changed the results.
Murad had a lead in the votes in round one of the contest, but ultimately lost in the second round. However, this is not uncommon, by the Super Final: "Over the past ten editions of the show, only five contestants have retained their first round lead at the end of the second voting period."
[Sources]
"“Wild West” co-writer calls for independent review into Söngvakeppnin 2024 results following grand final voting error … as full breakdown reveals Bashar Murad won the first round," wiwibloggs.com.

My 2024 Eurovision Top 37!!!
It's that time of year again! That time where I give my opinions on Eurovision that nobody asked for!
Is this an especially strong year for Eurovision? Eh. Yes and no. There's a lot of songs I don't like, more than there probably has been in any recent years, but there's also lots of songs I really like and would be happy if they won.
I think this is shaping up to be a very interesting year. I would argue that there is no clear and obvious frontrunner. Any winner is really probably going to feel like a "surprise", and most likely a pleasant one at that. There's a lot of songs here that feel like they'd be deserving winners, with no one really so clearly ahead of the pack to where it would feel like they were "robbed" if they lost.
But anyway, we're counting down, in reverse order, below the cut!
XX. ISRAEL - EDEN GOLAN - Hurricane
Ok, full disclosure, this is why I was kind of late to post my top. I haven't listened to this song. Frankly, I don't feel comfortable listening to this song. I don't know if I ever will. So, accordingly, I will not be giving it a rating, review, or ranking. I wish to make no further comment and please respect my decision.
Sorry for the downer start, but that's just how I feel.
36. SWITZERLAND - NEMO - The Code
I'm starting off controversial. I have no idea why this song is so popular in the community. I do not know what other people hear in this. To me, this just sounds like an annoying, disjointed mess.
35. LATVIA - DONS - Hollow
This song is a slow, dirgey wall of sludge. Sorry to this man, but I don't come to Eurovision to feel like I'm at a funeral.
34. BELGIUM - MUSTII - Before The Party's Over
This song is a slightly less slow, dirgey wall of sludge. I don't know, it feels like it's trying really hard to be artsy and ~important~
33. ICELAND - HERA BJÖRK - Scared of Heights
"I'm not one to take risks."
Yeah, Hera. We can tell. Jesus Christ. This song is so safe it feels like getting a lecture on abstinence at a Christian private school.
32. MOLDOVA - NATALIA BARBU - In The Middle
I like the chorus. Shame about literally everything else in this song.
31. ALBANIA - BESA - Titan
What's with the random banjos? Albania in its Folklore era.
30. AZERBAIJAN - FAHREE & ILKIN DOVLATOV - Özünlə Apar
As much as I want to give Azerbaijan bonus points for finally sending something partially in Azeri, I literally cannot remember a single note from this song and I relistened to it about an hour ago.
29. FRANCE - SLIMANE - Mon Amour
Every year at Eurovision be like
Eurovision: "Hey, France, how French do you want to make your entry this year?"
France: "Oui."
He's got a great voice but to me this is just a run of the mill, paint by numbers Eurovision ballad that is also French and mentions Paris.
28. GERMANY - ISAAK - Always on the Run
Okay I actually don't really care for this song at all, it sounds like the kind of generic, inoffensive, slight hint of country so they don't alienate the flyover states kind of song they make American Idol winners sing. He's only this high because I really like his voice.
27. MALTA - SARAH BONNICI - Loop
This is an average Eurovision song.
26. LUXEMBOURG - TALI - Fighter
This is an average Eurovision song.
25. GEORGIA - NUTSA BUZALADZE - Firefighter
By the time this song gets going, it really comes together. It finishes really strong. The problem is the first...half or so? It's a disjointed mess. But the fact that I like at least PART of this song so much is what puts it above all these other songs that are insta-skips.
24. LITHUANIA - SILVESTER BELT - Luktelk
Probably my next most controversial pick. I don't get the hype for this song? I mean, don't get me wrong, it's fine. I like it. But it's just, like...an average song in this genre? It's nothing special.
23. PORTUGAL - IOLANDA - Grito
This is probably a case where it's not the song so much as it's me not getting it. To my ears it sounds pleasant but dated. And slower songs are often fighting an uphill battle with me at Eurovision anyway so.
22. ARMENIA - LADANIVA - Jako
I really like this, it's the fun folk throwback of this year. The only problem with it is, it's basically just straight up folk instrumentation. It sounds very small as a result. It could have used just a bit more modern production to give it that real OOMPH factor.
21. NETHERLANDS - JOOST KLEIN - Europapa
I probably would have liked this song a lot more if I hadn't heard Finland first. Spoilers for later. Also maybe I'm just too Australian and not European enough to really be able to relate to this song.
20. UNITED KINGDOM - OLLY ALEXANDER - Dizzy
This song feels like a throwback to a lot of the kind of British pop music that would cross over onto the Australian charts here when I was a kid. Like, remember when Billie Piper was a pop singer? Remember Craig David? This song doesn't sound like either of those per se but it does sound like the kind of song that would be on like one of these albums that I have in a box in my garage somewhere
Tumblr media
19. AUSTRALIA - ELECTRIC FIELDS - One Milkali (One Blood)
Listen, I love Electric Fields. I've seen them live, and they were great. And I love this song. It's very meditative, it gives some good kind of spiritual advice that I vibe with. I think the song is only this low because, well, the video is meh, and this kind of feels like a "safe" Electric Fields energy? It feels like they could have done more.
18. SERBIA - TEYA DORA - Ramonda
See even though this song is a slow ballad, it avoids being a dirgey wall of sludge because it actually has like dynamic range to it. It's mostly quiet and gentle, and it builds to a big high point. It doesn't just feel like a wall of melancholy sound slowly drowning me.
17. GREECE - MARINA SATTI - Zari
I think I'm not hip enough for this. I feel like I'm going to come back to this later and like it a lot more than I already do. And I do like this. It feels kind of like a Greek Russian Woman in terms of vibe, and I mean that as a compliment. This is really good. It just may be a bit too weird, too out there, and too current to really land at Eurovision. Like this song definitely feels like it belongs on the internet. This song has iPhone face.
16. SPAIN - NEBULOSSA - Zorra
I love her lack of energy, go girl give us nothing!
Seriously though, this song is for the girls and the gays. And as I am a girl and a gay, I can appreciate it. This song is about, no matter what you do, people are going to call you a bitch and try and drag you down. So she's like, OK, fuck you, I'm going to go take on the world, be an empowered woman, and be successful, and if that makes me a bitch then fine, I'm the best bitch here. And I think that's a good message, and I support it. Women shouldn't have to make themselves smaller so as to not threaten your insecurities.
15. CYPRUS - SILIA KAPSIS - Liar
There is just something absolutely FILTHY about this beat that makes me want to throw it back. Fortunately for everybody, I am incapable of throwing it back, so you don't have to be subjected to that. But, like, I feel it in this song. This beat does dirty things to me.
14. ESTONIA - 5MIINUST & PUULUUP - (Nendest) Narkootikumidest Ei Tea Me (Küll) Midagi
Every time this song comes on, I can't resist the urge to get up and start dancing to it, so it must be doing something right. But also fuck you for making me write a title that long.
13. SWEDEN - MARCUS & MARTINUS - Unforgettable
Swedes are too OP at pop. Like this song is basically perfect. Fortunately, I am too much of a lesbian to be nostalgic for boy band music. If I had been into the Backstreet Boys or N*Sync back in the day, this song would make me super nostalgic, and it would probably be my number one. But as it is I'm nostalgic for different things, and it's all those songs that are in my top ten this year. As you'll see.
12. UKRAINE - ALYONA ALYONA & JERRY HEIL - Teresa & Maria
Ukraine doesn't miss at Eurovision. If the Vidbir staging had like...any budget at all, this would probably be higher. That's really all that's holding it back. I love this song. It's great.
11. CROATIA - BABY LASAGNA - Rim Tim Tagi Dim
This was hard. I went back and forth with this and other songs in my top 10 so many times. If you ask me to make this list again five minutes from now, this is probably there. If this song wins Eurovision, I'll be happy. I love it. If there's anything holding this back in comparison to the songs in my top, it's: I'm more nostalgic for other genres apparently; there's no real vocal moment in this song; the production kind of sounds like this was made in Garageband? Don't take any of this to mean I don't like the song. I do. But I like this a roughly equal amount to like half of my top ten and I had to split hairs.
10. SLOVENIA - RAIVEN - Veronika
youtube
This is art, mama. This was the first Eurovision song I heard this year and it really started everything off on a good note. The insane vocal moment at the end is what kept this in my top 10 above Croatia. I cannot wait to see the staging because this has a vision.
9. NORWAY - GÅTE - Ulveham
youtube
This feels weird having it this low. It was my number four for the longest time. Like, until I made this list today. I think it's the verses holding it back for me. The verses are a little bit nothing. It's just a lot of "this happened, and then this happened". And that's the one thing that docks an execution point from this otherwise excellent song. But it's lovely hearing Norwegian at Eurovision for the first time in forever
8. AUSTRIA - KALEEN - We Will Rave
youtube
Things Badger is nostalgic for, entry #1 - Cascada, apparently. This is taking me back to playing fucking DDR at the Time Zone outside of Hoyts at Hornsby Westfield when I was like 15. This was one of the songs I was juggling with whether to keep in my top ten, asking myself "Do I really like this song as much as I thought I did the last time I played it?" So then I'd play it again, and every time I played it...I'd get this feeling. And every time we kiss, I swear I could fly.
Wait.
7. ITALY - ANGELINA MANGO - La Noia
youtube
OK, full disclosure, if I were ranking the songs "objectively" in terms of which one is the best, like if I were taking personal taste out of this and just telling you what song I think will or should win Eurovision, this would be my pick. This is by far the hippest thing Italy has ever sent to Eurovision. It's great. It's fun. It's fresh. It's vocally challenging but executed with unbelievable ease. Angelina Mango is style, she is fashion, she is an icon, she is the moment. She's everything. Also, BUSINESS PRINCESS. What more can you want?
6. CZECHIA - AIKO - Pedestal
youtube
Things Badger is nostalgic for entry #2 - late 80s/early 90s girl grunge rockers. This song is stuck in my head all the time, and it's awesome. You just want to scream out the chorus. Because, you know what, I relate to this. I am currently going through a phase of loving me more, loving me more than your bullshit. And it feels great. It's empowering. It's a good message. Sometimes we do need to learn to put ourselves first, and learn what self-love actually means.
5. DENMARK - SABA - Sand
youtube
This is Scandinavian pop perfection. And I am not immune to Scandi-pop. Far from it. It's a well-known weakness of mine. I apologise if it makes me boring, but I fucking love this. I love every single second of this song. I'm probably going to vote for it in the Grand Final. If this wins the Jury I will be the one person who was like yeah I told you.
4. POLAND - LUNA - The Tower
youtube
OK, I initially had this lower. This was always in my Top 10. I always loved this song. But I always kind of had it in my mind of like, oh yeah, this is a really great song, but I like other songs more.
But, do I, though? Because, other than my #1 song, this is the song I've listened to more than any other song this year. And, as I was putting together this list, I kept thinking, oh yeah, The Tower is going to be the song that I listen to the most (other than my number 1) after this contest, it's going to be on all my playlists.
And then I stopped and thought, wait, hang on. If I keep wanting to listen to this song more than all the others, and I'm already looking forward to listening to this song for years to come...doesn't that mean I like it a hell of a lot more than I keep thinking I do? And, yeah. The answer is yes. I really love this song. I think the reason I kept underrating it is because it's just a great song all the way through with no real big epic Eurovision moment, right? But this list isn't what song I think will win Eurovision, it's what songs I like best. And I like this song almost the best. This is the kind of music I listen to.
3. FINLAND - WINDOWS95MAN - No Rules!
youtube
Things Badger is nostalgic for entry #3 - Y2K era Eurodance. This is basically just Planet of the Bass with only slightly less irony. And I love literally everything about it. Eurodance is a fundamental, defining characteristic of who I am. The first album I ever owned was Aqua's Aquarium. This shit just speaks to my soul, OK?
2. IRELAND - BAMBIE THUG - Doomsday Blue
youtube
*stands and applauds* You did it. You fucking did it, Ireland. You sent something interesting. Thank God. And, like, OK, interesting in and of itself does not equal good. This song is a stylistically experimental mishmash of different genres that could very easily be an unlistenable messy clusterfuck, but it's not. It's unironically actually very good and...oddly coherent? It's honestly bizarre how well these stylistic shifts that should be jarring just flow seamlessly. Or at least to me they do.
Is there maybe a part of this song that is trying a little too hard to be different and edgy? Yeah, sure, maybe. But I was once a teenager trying too hard to be different and edgy, and maybe this song speaks to that part of me that I haven't accessed in a while.
1. SAN MARINO - MEGARA - 11:11
youtube
Man, it sucks that this is going to go out in the semi-finals because I REALLY love this song, and I don't get why other people don't.
But apparently it's because...Thing Badger is nostalgic for, entry #4, mid-2000s electronic rock, which was absolutely fucking huge in Australia at the time. This song reminds me so much of that time in my life when I was listening to, like, The Rogue Traders, The Veronicas, TV Rock, The Presets, The Potbelleez, Sneaky Sound System. I could keep going. Apparently I was hugely nostalgic for this exact sound and I had no idea until I heard this song. But apparently this is also an experience entirely unique to me because it seems like nobody else likes this song, or cares about it at all.
Whatever, it will always have a fan in me.
OK HAPPY END

🏆 That Eurovision Jury 2024 - Part 2
We continue today with part two of That #Eurovision Jury. This time Czechia, Azerbaijan, Sweden, San Marino, Estonia, and Ireland are being reviewed.
With the rehearsals for the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest starting in just a few weeks, we thought we’d have a little go at trying to make our own jury scores for this year’s contest. While there’s no way to accurately predict what the juries or televotes will decide next month, we can say how we would vote if we were jurors. No Rules! (okay we do have to have some rules) The 36 countries…

Eurovision 2023: #27

27. CYPRUS Andrew Lambrou - "Break a broken heart" 12th place
youtube
Decade ranking: 88/116 [Above Ochmann, below Amanda Tenfjord] Hang on, left side on the scoreboard? 😕 If you say so...
And it was on Wednesday 20 December 2023 that BorisBubbles faced one of his greatest challenges yet. Figure out interesting things to write about Andrew Lambrou. What a thoroughly uninteresting journey it has been for Cyprus. Arguably one of the MOST uninteresting since i started blogging actually.
Tumblr media
Even finding moments to gif was a struggle.
So to prep for this write-up I did the following:
1) Looked at my preshow review for an entry point, but turns out I bailed almost immediately on Andrew back then as well <3
2) Accused ChatGPT of writing Break a Broken Heart. Then when it denied involvement, interrogated it about AI songwriting bots and and forced it to snitch on them. THEY EXIST and the EBU hasn't banned their use yet so welp 2024/2025 will be rancid, I guess.
3) Listened to Break A Broken Heart (and honestly, I almost forgot this step altogether. I really wish I was joking right now.)
And all gave me ZERO inspiration 😁 We knew what we were in for the second the teaser dropped. That song ("what song?" -- my friend André), that result, that staging, to a tee. We knew Andrew was specifically cast by Cyprus to grab a qual and be there. (unless you buy into the stupidity that somebody saw "Electrify" and thought "THAT GUY! THAT ONE! HE'S GONNA WIN EUROVISION FOR US!!"). So he did, uncared for by all except for a few youtube comment bots pretending to be fit women. Nothing beyond the basest "imagination" was used to make Andrew or his song engaging. Even during "Electrify" you could somewhat enjoy him for being a dimwitted but benevolent beta male. "Break a broken heart" is so devoid of flavour it could have been performed by a hologram and it would have made the exact same impact. It sapped Andrew of any personality and texture he could have had. Impressively bland from head to tail.
Tumblr media
EVEN AT THIS STAGE, MONTHS AFTER THE CONTEST my most salient Andrew memory is the twitter gays fawning over him cuz you know, Hot Guy From Australia, only to IMMEDIATELY forget about him when Marco sauntered over the stage with a rainbow banner during the flag parade. I don't even care about Marco but lmfao. Where Marco was the true gay-coded himbot the cigarettes yearned for at a time of total Kenmania, Andrew felt like the Bangladeshi sweatshop equivalent, a cheaper alternative outclassed on every front.
Tumblr media
That said, I don't even DISLIKE "Break a broken heart" or Andrew. Like, how could you muster up emotion for that. Besides, there are worse songs to listen to, esp at the 2023 contest, and I would not press skip if this song snuck into an algorithm-generated Eurovision Mix playlist. Though that might just be because I would barely notice it was on there in the first place. 😬

EUROVISION 2024 REVIEW: Greece
Alternative title: The 2024 Greek Tour Almost 2 decades after winning Eurovision, this country is on a hunt for a second, and personally, I think they should. She was chosen internally on October 24, 2023 to fly the Greek flag in Malmo. Her song…

The government is bringing in immediate changes to the Accredited Employer Worker Visa, which it says will help protect migrants from exploitation and address unsustainable net migration. In 2023, a near-record 173,000 non-New Zealand citizens migrated to the country. The changes to the work visa scheme include introducing an English language requirement for migrants applying for low-skilled jobs. A number of construction roles will also no longer be added to the green-light list due to less demand, and the franchisee accreditation category will be disestablished. The Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Trust says it deliberately began reducing staff numbers and slowing work on site last year to help keep costs down. The trust on Saturday announced its budget estimate had ballooned from $104 million to $248m, following a four-month project review. It needed to secure $30m by August, when a meeting would be held on whether to mothball the project, trust chair Mark Stewart said. A street and a park associated with abuse of children and young people are likely to have a name change. Marylands Place and Marylands Reserve are both on one of two former sites of the notorious Marylands School, in the Christchurch suburb of Middleton. One in five of the boys who attended the residential school, run by the St John of God brothers, reported being abused there, found an interim report released in 2023 for the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care. It described the institution as 'hell on earth'. Next week, a Christchurch City Council community board is to consider a name for the street and park. ABBA and their fans celebrated the 50th anniversary of their Eurovision success in style at the weekend - with Bjorn Ulvaeus making a guest appearance in London's West End and saying he feels "humbled" by their continued popularity.
