Smiffina episodes - Episode 142

Smithy and Kerry were unfortunately caught in the back of his car in flagrante mid obbo on some kids who are racing stolen cars... Des was also present in a marked car - and whilst he was trying to nick the kids - one nicked the Area Car which was complete with bits of Des' uniform.

We start with Smithy and Kerry in a frantic rush to get dressed whilst Des speeds after the Area Car in Smithy's car. Smithy calls it in to make it an official job and to get others help once he's dressed. "Come on, put your foot down!" "As opposed to getting your leg over?"

"Inspector Gold, are you aware of the smoking ban in all Metropolitan Police buildings?"

"I won't say anything if you don't."

Gina is not happy to hear the Area Car has been stolen. "The kids we were observing managed to take the car whilst our backs were turned, Ma'am." One way of putting it. Her mood doesn't improve when Adam looks pointedly at her cigarillo in the CAD office and she's forced to put it out in Sheelagh's drink - but not after a final drag!

Smithy's car isn't as agile as the Area Car and they lose it mid 3 point turn - only for the kids to start taunting Des over radio. Back at the station Gina demands to know what they were doing - "We'd moved over to the other side to get a better vantage point." Insists Smithy. Gina reads them the riot act and orders them to find the Area Car the next day - or else!

Come the morning, Kerry feels bad that Des is getting the most of the blame but Smithy insists they can't tell Gina what they were really doing - and insists he doesn't want a repeat. (If only he'd stuck to his word...!) Gina is still furious and even more so when the kid starts taunting Des over the radio again. (I find it incredible that no officer spotted them in at least what... 6/8 hours overnight? Those kids have a great hiding place for a massive white car with flashing lights.) The kid taunts him where to find the car - and they do... but it's absolutely lathered in graffiti.

Whilst uniform are VERY amused, Gina and Adam are NOT. The team hum the funeral march as Smithy, Kerry and Des stalk up the ramp, ordered inside for a bollocking. They are told that their disciplinary action will be decided upon as soon as the kid responsible is arrested - it's in their efforts to find him quickly and without fuss - which they do, thanks to Honey informing them about his limited edition top and where to buy it from.

Unfortunately for the three, forensics are unable to gather anything of use from the car so although they have the right kid (Dean) - they have to let him go.... but not without looking through his phone for where the next race will be held. Initially reluctant given what happened last time, Smithy agrees for a time limited obbo and Des manages to wangle a stinger from the traffic dept. It looks hopeless at first and Smithy and Kerry return to the station - though Des sticks it out... and falls lucky, arresting Dean.

With all the ends tied up, Gina tells the three officers they won't be facing further disciplinary action, though Des is literally grounded to 1 months foot patrol for leaving the keys in the ignition of the Area Car in the first place.

Sheelagh arrives bang on time for her and Smithy (She's been er... friendly... with Des on the side - the sides in the Sgt's office for example) to receive copies of their job descriptions from Gina "Because I think you've forgotten what the job is all about." As they leave Gina literally throws a nicotene inhaler back onto the desk after a few drags - there's nothing quite like the real thing when you're that pissed off!

This episode is also the first one that Gina does her rather pinched and almost spat "P. C. 'Kent'." with the Kent sounding suspiciously like a very similar word when she returns to her office after a cigarette to find Gabriel trying to subtly intimidate Ruby out of resigning. Unfortunately for Ruby there's a bomb scare called in before she can tell Gina the full truth and they have to rush out, leaving the letter (ironically a bomb for Gabriel as it reveals his role in a fit up too) on Gina's desk.

The lighting in this episode really annoys me - I can understand and maybe handwaive the first half of the episode in various offices etc as it's the middle of the night and quiet, Gina's just sat at her desk doing paperwork and there's less staff - but the 2nd half is daytime and the corridors and CAD and the interview rooms are in darkness in certain parts. Why would a police station need good lighting?! Not like need to be clear and open about EVERYFUCKINGTHINGTHEYDO and able to be seen on CCTV. Ahem.

I think I identify a lot with Martin. His mentality of, "It's not that complicated, just do the right thing" is something I recognize in myself. And I used to struggle with the feeling that it's easier being alone than dealing with people. But, then a family member died and the only way I could cope was by surrounding myself with loved ones.

It's funny, that. The intrinsic link between death and loneliness. But in my family, it's also the link between death and community. Every time there's a funeral, the wake is a family reunion. Stil... Unless my favorite cousins are there, I feel pretty alone at those, too.

Not to say I don't enjoy my family's company. They're just... They're cowboys and their wives. And unless I have a job, I don't have a lot to talk about with them. No one wants to hear about clowning, or what series I'm into at the moment. Well, they ask about it, but it's not enough to carry a conversation. Still, we would do anything for each other. You need help moving? Give them a call. Need a place to crash for the night? Give them a call. They show their love in practicality, or in story telling. Not in casual conversation. That's kind of how I imagine the Lucas Family to be.

Welp. Time to pour myself into another OC. A Lucas kid that was chosen by The End. They mainly serve a different fear than the rest of their family, so they don't have much to talk about. Resulting in them feeling very alone indeed.

Gosh, I'm glad I'm getting to hang out with my immediate family, and then with Kade today. I... I don't like feeling alone again.
