Discussion summary: Left Hand of Darkness
Published in 1969, The Left Hand of Darkness is a classic in science fiction that explores issues of sex/gender in an alien-yet-human society where the aliens are just like us except in how they reproduce. These aliens, the Gethenians, can reproduce as either male or female. They spend most of their lives sexually undifferentiated. Once a month, they go into heat (“kemmer”) and their sexual organs activate as either male or female (it’s essentially random).
Here's a summary of the discussions we had on 2023-08-25 and 2023-09-01 about the book:
HIGH LEVEL REACTONS
Michelle (@scifimagpie): even though it was written by a cis straight perisex woman there is a queerness to the writing that feels true and that she nailed. There is a queerness to the soul of this book that still holds up, that's true and good, and I cannot but love and respect that.
Elizabeth (@ipso-faculty): this book is such a commentary on 1960s misogyny. Genly is a raging misogynist. It takes a whole prison break and crossing the arctic for Genly to realize a woman or androgyne can be competent 👀
Dimitri: [Having read just the first half of the book] I wonder if it keeps happening, if Genly keeps going "woaaaah" [to the Gethenians’ androgyny] or if he ever acclimates. It's been half the novel my guy
vic: yeah a book where a guy is destroyed by seeing a breast makes me want queer theory
vic: [it also] makes me feel good to see how much has changed [since the 1960s]
THE INTERSEX STUFF
A thing we appreciated about the book was how being intersex is contextual. The main character of the book, Genly Ai, is a human from a planet like Earth, who visits Gethen to open trade and diplomatic relations.
On his home planet, and to Earth sensibilities, Genly is perisex - he is able to reproduce at any time of the month and is consistently male.
But on Gethen, Genly becomes intersex. On Gethen, the norm is that you only manifest (and can reproduce as) a given sex during the monthly kemmer (heat/oestrus) period.
The Gethenians understand Genly as living in “permanent kemmer”, which is described as a common (intersex) condition, and these people are hyper-sexualized and referred to as Perverts.
At this point it’s worth noting that depiction is not the same as endorsement. Michelle pointed out the book is very empathetic to those in permanent kemmer. LeGuin does not appear to be endorsing the social stigma faced by these people, merely depicting it, and putting a mirror to how our own society treats intersex people.
Throughout the book, Genly is treated as an oddity by the Gethenians. He is hyper sexualized. He undergoes a genital inspection to prove he is who he says he is.
When Genly is sent to a prison camp and forcibly given HRT, he does not respond “normally” to the hormones, the effects are way worse for him, and the prison camp staff don’t care, and keep administering them even if it’ll kill him.
Two of us have had the experience of having hyperandrogenism and being forced onto birth control as teenager, and relating to the sluggishness of the drugs that Genly experienced, as well as the sense that gender/sex conformity was more important to authority figures (parents, doctors) than actual health and well-being.
Another scene we discussed the one where Genly is in a prison van en route to the gulag, and a Gethenian enters kemmer and wants to mate with him and he declines. He is given multiple opportunities over the course of the book to try having sex with a Gethenian, and declines every time, and we wondered if he avoided it out of trauma of being hyper-sexualized & hyper-medicalized & having had his genitals inspected.
We discussed the way he described his genital inspection through a trauma lens, and how it interacts with toxic masculinity - in vic’s terms, Genly being "I am a manly man and I have don't trauma"
Those of us who read the short story, Coming of Age in Karhide, noted that once the world was narrated from a Gethenian POV, the people in permanent kemmer were treated far more neutrally, which gave us the impression that Genly as an unreliable narrator was injecting some intersexism along with his misogyny
WHY IT MATTERS TO READ THIS BOOK THROUGH AN INTERSEX LENS
Elizabeth: I’ve encountered critiques of this book from perisex trans folks because to them the book is committing biological essentialism, and dismissing the book as a result. I think they’re missing that this book is as much about (inter)sex as it is about gender. I think they’re too quick to dismiss the book as being outdated or having backwards ideas because they’re not appreciating the intersex themes.
Elizabeth: The intersex themes aren’t exactly subtle, so it kind of stings that I haven’t seen any intersex analyses of this book, but there are dozens (hundreds?) of perisex trans analyses that all miss the huge intersex elephants in the room.
Also Elizabeth: I’ve seen this book show up in lists of intersex books/characters made by perisex people, and I’ve seen Estraven listed as intersex character, and it gets me upset because Estraven isn’t intersex! Estraven is perisex in the society in which he lives. Genly is the intersex character in this story and people who misunderstand intersex as being able to reproduce as male & female (or having quirky genitals smh) are completely missing that being intersex is socially constructed and based on what is considered typical for a given species.
WHAT THE BOOK DOESN’T HANDLE WELL
The body descriptions. As Dmitri put it: “ Like "his butt jiggled and it reminded  me of women" ew. It was intentional but I had to put the book down. It reminded me of transvestigators and how they take pictures of people in public.” 🤮
Not pushing Genly to reflect on how weird he is about other people’s bodies. We all had issues with how Genly is constantly scrutinizing the bodies of other humans to assess their gender(s) and it’s pretty gross.
vic asked: “how much of this is her reproducing violence without her knowing it? A thing I didn't like was how he always judging and analyzing people's bodies and realizing others treat him that way. And I wish there was more of his discomfort about this, that it made him feel icky.”
Dimitri added: “I really wanted him to have a moment of this too, for him to realize how much it sucks to be treated this way. As a trans person it's so uncomfortable. What are you doing going around doing this to people?”
Using male pronouns as default/ungendered pronouns. Élaina asked why Genly thinks a male pronoun is more appropriate for a transcendent God and pointed out there’s a lot to unpack there.
OTHER POSITIVES ABOUT THE BOOK
Genly’s journey towards respecting women, that he still had a ways to go by the end of the book. vic pointed out how “LeGuin was straight, and she loves men, and is kinda giving them the side-eye [in this book]. Her writing about how Genly is childish makes me really happy. It’s kind of hilarious to watch him bang his head against the wall because he’s so rigid.”
To which Dmitri added: “I agree with the bit on forgiving men for stuff. I don't know how she [LeGuin] does it but she really lays it all out. She gives you a platter of how men are bad at things, how they make mistakes that are pretty specific to them. She has prepared a buffet of it.”
Autistic Estraven! As Michelle put it: “autistic queer feels about Estraven speaking literally and plainly and Genly not getting it”
The truck chapter. Hits like a pile of bricks. We talked about it as a metaphor for the current pandemic.
The Genly x Estraven slowburn queerplatonic relationship
The conlang! Less is more in how it gets used
MIXED REACTIONS
The Foretelling. For some it felt unnecessary and a bit fetishy. For others it was fun paranormal times.
Pacing. Some liked how the book really forces you to really contemplate as you go. Others struggled with a pace that feels very slow to 2023 readers.
WORKS WE COMPARED THE BOOK TO
Star Trek (the original series) - we wondered if LHOD and Genly Ai were progressive by 1960s standards, and TOS came up as a comparison point. We were all of the impression that TOS was progressive for its time but all of us find it pretty misogynist by our standards. The interest in extra-sensory perception (ESP) is something that was a staple of TOS that feels very strange to contemporary viewers and also cropped up in LHOD
Ancillary Justice - for being a book where characters’ genders are all ambiguous but the POV character is actually normal about how they describe other characters’ bodies.
The Deep - for being another book in a situation where being able to reproduce as male and female is the norm. The Deep was written by an actually intersex author, and doesn’t have the cisperisex gaze of scrutinizing every body for sex. But oddly LHOD actually winds up feeling more like a book about intersex people, because it features a character who is the odd one out in a gonosynic society. In contrast, nobody is intersex in the Deep - everybody matches the norms for their species, which makes the intersex themes in the work much more subtle.
Overall, as vic put it, “there's something to be said about an honest depiction that's not great, especially when there's no alternatives”. For a long time there weren’t many other games in town when it came to this sort of book, and even though some things now feel dated, it’s still a valuable read. We’d love to see more intersex reviews & analyses of the book!

Nicola Walker's appearing in another historical (for the first time in what seems like ages!)
Everything We Know About Mary & George
BY EMILY BURACK PUBLISHED: NOV 16, 2023
Tumblr media
Mary & George, a new period drama which will chronicle the affair between King James I and George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, promises to be one of the most highly anticipated shows of 2024.
In fact, the romance between the two is referenced in Casey McQuiston's Red, White, & Royal Blue novel, wherein the fictional Prince Henry writes, "I feel that James I, who fell madly in love with a very fit and exceptionally dim knight at a tilting match and immediately made him a gentleman of the bedchamber (a real title), would take mercy upon my particular plight." In a fun turn of events, actor Nicholas Galitzine stars as both Henry in Red, White, and Royal Blue and as the "very fit knight," a.k.a. George, Duke of Buckingham.
Here's everything we know about Mary & George so far:
It's based on a true story.
Mary & George is adapted from The King's Assassin by Benjamin Woolley, a nonfiction book that details "the conspiracy to kill King James I by his handsome lover, the Duke of Buckingham."
Per Sky Atlantic, "Mary & George is inspired by the unbelievable true story of Mary Villiers, who moulded her beautiful and charismatic son, George, to seduce King James VI of Scotland and I of England and become his all-powerful lover. Through outrageous scheming, the pair rose from humble beginnings to become the richest, most titled and influential players the English court had ever seen, and the King’s most trusted advisors. And with England’s place on the world stage under threat from a Spanish invasion and rioters taking to the streets to denounce the King, the stakes could not have been higher."

Galitzine is also set to star in Red, White, and Royal Blue this year.SKY AND AMC
The plot continues: "Prepared to stop at nothing and armed with her ruthless political steel, Mary married her way up the ranks, bribed politicians, colluded with criminals and clawed her way into the heart of the Establishment, making it her own.  Mary & George is a dangerously daring historical psychodrama about an outrageous mother and son who schemed, seduced, and killed to conquer the court of England and the bed of King James."
Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine lead the cast.

INTRODUCING: two shiny new mercy shepard AUs 🤪
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and yes kasumi is heavily featured! art by @sleazy-art :))))
mercy is never arrested by anderson, therefore, they never join the alliance
mercy is never arrested by anderson, therefore, they never join the alliance
NO commander shepard
the first human spectre anderson (who miiiiiiight have a hatemance with saren lmao)
instead, teenaged mercy and kasumi continue their heists and schemes on earth, which eventually coalesces into a crime empire/shadow government that then expands to intergalactic operations
mercy’s speciality is blackmail and extortion of politicians, lobbyists, government officials, high-ranking military and the ultrarich. keeps them in line. passes a lot of laws to help the poor and disadvantaged (canon mercy took down conatix and BAaT around the time of their arrest)
originally focused on humans and human affairs, but eventually expands to help quarians and krogan, through trade and information
liara never assumes the role of shadowbroker, because the original shadowbroker was taken out years before she left her prothean studies. instead, she is an information broker for the shepherd
the information superpower is someone known as the shepherd (its just mercy and their crime family lmao)
kasumi is the right hand of the shepherd
no one knows what the shepherd looks like because in public mercy’s always wearing a face scrambler (someone different every time)
mercy scoops up proto edi and gives her multiple animal platforms
BUT when they do “court” (know i am thinking of this image of boba fett and fennec on the chair) mercy has a wardrobe like this, this, this (but more masc) with casual wear like this and this, kasumi wears outfits like this, this and this
even though they do dirty work for the good of others, mercy and kasumi still pull off plenty of heists. its like their hobby. a good weekend jaunt if you will, a company outing of sorts
anderson has a pretty genial working relationship with the shepherd bc his work has led him to needing information only they could supply
mercy has an award-winning record label where they produce just about everything they like, covering all sorts of genres. also used to launder money lmao
miranda never works for cerberus instead mercy and kasumi help steal away oriana, and miranda becomes mercy’s left hand
mercy saves jack from pragia early on (similar to sports coach au) and basically becomes the crime mob baby (i cant believe im saying this but like jinx aosdifjads im thinking of this picture only its like. w wrex)
mercy dabbles a lot in cybernetics and ai with edi. I’m thinking some geth reach out to them before sovereign
alternate path to the reapers--mercy picks up (rescues) tali during her pilgrimage and spectre anderson consults them?
mercy is very thoroughly ace in this au. im not sure about aro yet. deeply platonic loving mercykas
PAIRINGS: kasumi/harem p much, you got some kas/mirianda, ooh, some keiji. mercy like. doesnt even register when they’re doing the hankpankys and will take zoom calls whilst in the same room and that just flusters/unnerves their business partners and also contributes to the rumors that mercy’s the one with the harem. truly the otp is mercy/the job or actually even more accurately. mercy/blackmail.
white collar au
Leaning into the fun crime stuff!!!! >:)
set on the citadel(?)
mercy is fbi agent peter burke or whatever top space agent for the area is, fighting white collar space crime and art thieves, spent the last two years hunting down and then arresting kas--
kasumi is neal caffrey clever, charming, extremely talented thief, forger and conman
irikah is elizabeth, the natural science museum director and mercy’s wife of twelve years. thane passed when kolyat was young. kolyat left for college about a year into mercy’s first hunt for kasumi (he’s a junior now), so mercy and irikah are empty nesters in a big way
keiji as kate
EDI IS MOZZIE!!! kasumi’s criminal best friend, other partner in literal, numerous crimes. originally she was just an ai that kasumi stole for a job, became friends with, and then instead of delivering her, kasumi helped edi steal herself a platform :’) art criminal ai for life omg heheHEHOOHOHHOHO credit goes to @acrylicsalts-inspo for really wrecking my shit on that one like edi as mozzie is making me so emotional and also i love the image of her being a huge fan of wines and schemes
anderson is director hughes (mercy’s boss)
mercy’s team has ashley, tali, and vega
samara is june the really hot elegant wealthy widow that’s kasumi’s “landlady” which means morinth is the granddaughter (who really wants mercy to pose nude for her art classes)
i like to picture wrex as either the bureau’s art expert, mercy’s former partner (who moved to another location) or an old dear dear friend that just happen to be uh. a warlord
miranda is sara ellis the insurance investigator, who has chased after some of kasumi’s “alleged” heists in the past. she and kas date a lil bit
kasumi’s criminal friends/connections will be jack, garrus, ashley, zaeed and liara--
liara is keller, kasumi’s criminal rival, and also wants mercy to be her fbi agent. gets uh. kind of obsessed w them tbh. the first time liara says she’d be better partner for mercy than kasumi, ooooh, kas does not like that and it takes her a lil bit to figure out why ;) liara causes a lot of problems for both kasumi and mercy, including kidnapping irikah for one ill-advised plot
PAIRINGS: mercy/irikah, eventual mercy/kas, kas/iri and ot3. past kas/keiji, some kas/miri
AND IF YOURE INTERESTED: sports coach au posts and notes can be read here!

I’m almost done with ME2 on Legendary edition. Just gotta get through some sidequests before Legion and the Suicide Mission.
I ended up playing the Overlord DLC yesterday. First time, and... hoo boy.
The whole savant thing, mileage may vary, and when I saw that holo of David speaking fluent Geth, all I could think of was that one deleted scene from Episode 3 where Anakin and Obi-Wan are in the elevator and Anakin just perfectly quotes R2’s beeps.
BUT
I can handle all of the Reaper body horror across 2 and 3, not to mention the Thorian’s lair in 1, but nothing across the entire trilogy is as distressing as seeing David hooked up to those machines, eyes Clockwork Orange-style, crying, reciting square roots.
I’m not a horror-gamer, and to me, this was up there with that scene in Burial at Sea where Atlas is poking at Elizabeth’s head with an ice pick, and she’s crying “I DON’T KNOW THE PASSWORD”. It just wasn’t... easy to watch.

Here’s another profile for another Shepard. I was casually playing ME1 again, and there she was ~ she came out like a breath of fresh air
Full Name: Kiriya-Alekzandra Shepard
Alias: Alison Gunn, Elizabeth Mikhail
Codename: Agent X or Zerox
Age: 22 (youngest to ever join in the Alliance, and youngest to ever recieve the star of Terra) => WARHERO
Height: 176cm
Weight: 43kg (she is underweight, due to forgetting to eat, much like Kilian, Kiriya ends up being monitored daily by Chakwas and the rest of her crew in order to ensure her survival)
Date of Birth: 21.07.2159 (I know that canon Shepard is born on April 4 2154, but this is my headcanon)
Eye colour: Blue (Kiriya got her eyes from her mother and her overall looks mostly from her father)
Hair colour: Red (her natural hair color is black, but she dyes it red taking advantage of the SPECTRE status, much to the annoyance of Mikhailovich)
Skin tone: Lite/Tanned???
Hair type: Short
Body type: Athletic (yet also severely underweight, due to simply forgetting to eat... saving the galaxy aint easy after all)
Species: Human
Ethnicity: Japanese-American
Homeland: well, she was born on the SSV KILIMANJARO several months early, her mother was forced by the entire crew to take leave. => SPACER
Hobbies/Interests: Singing, cooking, baking, writing, shooting idiot Batarians, music, languages, and painting
Likes: Sketching, studying, and building miniture toy models
Dislikes: Xenophobics, Batarians, the Citadel Council (depending on the day),
Best friends: Jeff ‘Joker’ Moreau, Garrus Vakarian, Liselle T’loak (Kiriya massacred a lot of Cerberus Agents after finding out about her death via the shadowbroker, it took 3 alliance fleets to properly calm her down, yet she was never charged as the Alliance viewed it as cleaning up shop... in a manner of speaking)
Sexuality: Die-hard Lesbian
Romantic Interest(s): Tela Vasir (lol bet ya weren’t expecting that were ya lol)
Pet/Animal Companion: a pet varren which she was forced to leave behind as Admiral Hackett stated that the war ship was not an appropriate place to raise such a pet
Personality: humorous, sarcastic and witty. Though when she deals with the council she usually tends to be diplomatic, cold and uncaring for them. Mainly due to the fact that she was pretty much forced to deal with their crap during the hunt for Saren. Hell, when the collector’s attack happened, she was expecting the council to do something, when they refused... she told them to jump of a cliff, before resigning publicly. The publicity from this event, garnered her a lot of fans (from human, to asari, to turians, to krogan)
Hidden Talent: Kiriya is an exellent cook, to the point when she starts cooking both the Normandy crew and the Arcturus station fleet will literally get into fights for the last piece. Wrex usually tends to win in these cases
Allies/Friends: Joker, Garrus, Thane, Samara (and her daughters), the Systems Alliance, Aria T’loak, Ashley, Kaidan, Kelly, Miranda and Oriana Lawson, Tali and the Quarians, Geth (Legion), STG (Major Kirrahe and his unit), Mordin, Wrex, Jack, Kahlee Sanders, David Anderson, Steven Hackett, Ken and Gabby, Engineer Adams, Dr. Karin Chakwas, Pressley, Jacob, CORSAIRS, Grunt, Kas and many others
Enemies/Nemesis: Cerberus, KaiLeng, Reapers,
Weapon Preferences: (bear with me, I know that there’s a few crossovers with Bleach, Toji no Miko and Devil May Cry but like I said previously my headcanon..)
Guns (Ebony and Ivory)
Swords/Zanpaktou (Benihime, Rebellion, Chidori, Shirayuki, Senbonzakura, Zangetsu)
Abilities:
Master Tactician                    Weapons Expert                 Biotics
Master Strategist                   Hacking Expert
Combat Expert                      Stealth/Infiltration Expert
Skills: Warp, Singularity, Reave, Dark Channel,
Family:
Rear Adm. Hannah Shepard nee Hitsukawa (mother)
Commander Jonathan Alexander Shepard (father)
Dr. Karin Chakwas/Kahlee Sanders (Godmothers)
Adm. David Anderson/Adm Steven Hackett (Godfathers)
Headcanon
Kiriya is the youngest of her siblings, yet despite being the youngest, she was the fastest to mature. She was a surprise to both her parents and their families. With both sides of grandparents always dismissing her, she grew up isolated whenever she was forced to stay with her grandparents. While she was born in space, she was raised in Mindoir. Reaching the age of 16, Mindoir was attacked, and she lost her friends in a fight for survival. When her family found out the news, they had all raced to Huerta. Only to see she was in a medically induced coma. Being forced to grow up early, she saw what the Galaxy was like. Choosing to join the Alliance to ensure that no one will ever face what she has faced, she was rejected by the Alliance brass who did not want to anger her mother. originally they told that she was too young, only for Udina and Mikhailovich to vouch for her. She graduated with the highest of achievements, and was immediately placed in the N7 program. She met Joker on Arcuturus Station when they were both just children, and since then they have been thick as thieves. Adm. Anderson asked for her specifically so he could bond more with his god-daughter. Chakwas immediately jumped at the chance to reaquaint herself with Kiriya. Not realizing that Kiriya suffers from memory loss. She has no idea who they are...

You'll Never Be Alone
Commander Elizabeth Shepard was a badass. She fought her way through countless enemies almost anytime she landed on a planet. She defeated a clone of herself, with the help of the man- alien- she loved, and the loyal Tali'Zorah Vas Normandy. And against all odds, she survived the beam of a Reaper, none other than Harbinger itself. But when she opted to destroy the Reapers, sacrificing herself, along with the Geth and the AI known as EDI, she wasn't expecting to survive it. It was finally her time, and she was ready to go to that bar and wait patiently for Garrus until it was his time to join her. But against all odds, her body refused to give up just yet. When one of the few Alliance ships remaining in the Sol system found the flickering signal of her vitals, they feared she would be dead by the time they got to her. The one good thing about the Citadel being mostly rubble was the lack of gravity, so when they found the Commander underneath a large piece of metal, they easily moved it and got her onto the closest shuttle. How that small room still had oxygen was a mystery, but one they weren't going to question. Shepard was covered in burns, and her normally bright red hair was mostly gone, and what was left covered in ash. For the next six months, she mostly slept and healed from her injuries. By the time they reached the rendezvous point, Admiral Hackett's ship had reestablished contact with the Normandy. Shepard was moved to the other ship and they immediately departed to meet the Normandy. By the time they got to where they could see the smaller ship, the Commander was mostly healed after nearly a year since the end of the war. Wearing a set of borrowed dress blues, she stood tall and proud as her crew stepped onto the Admiral's ship. Meeting each crew member's eyes, she held back tears of happiness at seeing all of them were okay. They'd even managed to get EDI back online. Joker's limp seemed slightly worse, and she worried about that. The crash must have rebroken his leg. Liara appeared hardened by what she'd seen at the end of the war, no longer the peppy young Asari she had been. Tali was just happy to see her, and had to resist throwing herself at the Commander. Javik was smiling, and she knew he was proud. She'd done what no other organic since the first cycle had done, not even the Protheans, though they'd come so close. Wrex and Grunt had already returned to Tuchanka, though they'd passed messages along upon hearing she was alive. They would both name several children Shepard in her honor. Kaidan was gone, he'd been pronounced KIA during the battle of Earth, and that stung more than she'd expected it to. And Garrus... The second she met his eyes, her stance collapsed and she flung herself at him, his arms sliding around her waist by instinct. She broke down in his arms, face buried against his chest. No armor, surprisingly enough. He was wearing simple clothes. It was odd, being so close to him without his armor in the way. After several long moments, she forced herself to breathe. Wiping her eyes, she pulled away from him and gave him a small nod. "I missed you," those three words came as easily as the last three she'd spoken to him. She turned back to face Hackett, who'd waited patiently as she'd had her moment. She was given control of the Normandy again and told that everyone was going to need someone to look to in this post-war time, and of course it was her. She'd united every race in the fight against the Reapers, led them into battle knowing they might lose. And against all odds, they didn't. Billions had died, yes, and it was going to be a long time before any race was back to the numbers they'd had before. But the war had been won. Despite everything, the organics had beaten the Reapers and destroyed every last one of them. Sure, it was going to take time before the mass relays were fixed, but they could do it. There was no limit to what they could accomplish now if they all worked together. Shephard stood in front of the memorial wall on the Normandy, where her name plate rested above Anderson's. She brushed her hand over her name and gave a faint smile before turning and stepping into the elevator. When she reached the CIC deck and stepped off, her crew turned to face the galaxy map she stood over. She selected their destination, and headed towards the cockpit to give a quick speech. She was reminded of the first time she'd done this, all those years ago- was it really only five years? "We lost a lot of good people during the war. Thane, Ashley, Miranda, Mordin, even Legion. But everything we do from this point on, we do for them. We're going to rebuild. Fix the mass relays, the Citadel. We're going to rub our victory in the face of the Reapers, and we will be ready if they ever manage to come back. There is nothing we cannot accomplish, not anymore. Thank you, all of you, for being my friends. My family." she rested a hand on Joker's shoulder. "Take us home, Joker."

Ok, so I’m going to fully dive into #nonshepardocweek, because I’ve never done anything like this before and I really want to make this OC something real and believable, and not just a doodle on repeat.
What is the character’s full name, and how did you come up with it?
Shastina Emperus Invictus, née Palaven. I lucked out, and some poor soul over at Bioware created her name when they wrote the description for Invictus, so I had no part in coming up with it.
What inspired you to create this character?
I found myself intrigued by the description of Invictus, and what sort woman Shastina might be in order to make the founding story possible. Before I knew what was happening, I was designing her character, and giving her an intricate backstory that is both the joy and bane of my existence.
What species are they, and what do they look like? (Use anything you like - descriptions, art, outfits, face claims, etc)
She’s a turian, for starters, so human face claims don’t work too well here. But she’s been described as muscular (even for a turian), and formal (again, even for a turian). Her plates are deep maroon, and her markings are cream (though this changes several years down the road). If she were to have a human equivalent in terms of appearance and carriage, it would definitely be Claire Underwood. She is a practical but impeccable dresser, and wears clothing that matches her markings and golden eyes.
Tell us a little about the world-state that they inhabit. (For example, are they active before, during, and/or after the events of the Mass Effect trilogy? Are they part of an AU?)
Shastina begins her story on Palaven, in the homeworld capital of Cipritine, in 1958 CE (So, many years before first contact). But for the story I have planned, most of the important events occur on Invictus in the following years. Invictus is very much a “wild west” environment, and the presence of multiple species and government/gang interests makes life on the planet antagonizing. If I ever get around to actually writing it, the story would be canon to the trilogy. For some galactic perspective: Turians are working to expand, not only in terms of colonization, but also in proving their worth to the Council. They’ve held a seat since about 900 CE, but with the geth revolt that occurred in the 1800s, the turians are especially cautious, as they are still the youngest council species. Political positions on the turian homeworld are highly stressful but highly desired, and Shastina comes from a lineage of political acrobats.
Share a quote, image, or song that reminds you of the character.
“Take a little, then a little more, until finally you have it all. Let them declare you king, even if it's only of a tree in Asia Minor. The rest will come to you.” – practically shouted spoken by the lovely Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra in the 1963 film Cleopatra (which by coincidence has been a great source of inspiration for this character)
*thank you to @rock-paperback-scissors for coming up with this awesome OC ask prompt, I definitely took it and ran off screaming with it!

She walked lightly towards the window and pulled it open looking out to see who was cursing. “Elizabesh, geth down here. Right nows. So we can discush your idea,” he screamed up at her. “Good gad man, it is the middle of the night,” she paused, “and you are drunk. Go home and if you truly wish to consider my proposition, come to me in the morning.” He took a minute to comprehend all her words but when he did he did something she had not expected. He ran towards the wall beneath her window and began groping recklessly at the wall, attempting, she assumed, to climb up. “Stop that!” she yelled down. “Not until you lishen to me.” She rolled her eyes, not quite certain if she wanted to laugh or scream. So she closed the window. Which was a mistake. Because within a minute of him realizing the window was closed he began screeching at an unbelievable level. “Elizabesh, you get your amazing ash down here, so I can tupp you in the grass.” Just then Elizabeth’s door crashed open and Hortencia burst in. “What is Lord Pindrem doing screaming outside at you?” “Well-” “Elizabesh La Roue, if I do not get to sleep with yous this instant I will start bellowing,” Hortencia pushed Elizabeth away from the window and pushed her head out. “Lord Pindrem! It is the middle of the night, this is highly improper, and you are in no way going to touch Elizabeth tonight.” “But-” “You are however,” Hortencia interrupted him, “going to get inside and stop giving the servants something to talk about.” Hortencia slammed the window shut and turned to Elizabeth.
