Been a while but I'm back, and with a book rant because I'm finally finishing up The Count Of Monte Cristo, so spoiled warning for chapters 109-112!
⚠️ You have been warned⚠️
I also apologize to my discord friend for going off mid Pokemon discussion, but the story changed so quick and I couldn't help it.
So let's dog right in!
Okay so, we get Andrea who was going to marry Eugenie Danglars but ends up getting arrested for fraud and Eugenie ran away with her friend but was brought back.*
Only for Andrea to reveal at the trial that he is the biological child of the judge, Monsieur De Villefort and Baroness Danglars so technically, he was going to marry his half sister had no one interfered with the marriage.
But Villefort thought he was stillborn and ended up burying him alive, and his enemy thought he was burying money and stabbed him and dug up the grave, only to find a newborn Andrea and was like "Wait he's alive-" and dumped him at an orphanage where he was adopted and raised by Italian pirates.
And now out of just being petty, Andrea is like "This ain't about me right now-" and shifted his fraud trial to focus on the judge and how he needs to be charged with attempted murder.
Oh! And this also means that he's the half brother of Valentine and Edward De Villefort as well, basically making both families united by being a bastard child.
Also, the comments made by everyone in the room are SAVAGE.
"She did well to die, poor girl"
LIKE BRO, YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO GO THAT FAR

I have a bit of a head canon for Valentine de Villefort.  I like to imagine that she treats Edward with a cold cruelty and detachment.
I like to think that when Valentine was young, Madame de Villefort treated Valentine well, perhaps even with love. However, after learning that she was pregnant she began treating Valentine with the feigned concern that we see in the book.  Valentine begins to see this change in the way that she's being treated, and realizes that it is the result of this pregnancy.  When she sees Edward after he's born she looks down on him with a little bit of hatred, for taking away the love and care that she's received from Madame de Villefort.  And this is when she begins treating him with this cold cruelty.
She is one day watching Edward lie asleep when he's a baby, and she places a pillow over his face to smother him.  She only stops when she hears the footsteps of someone approaching.  When Edward is a toddler, she and Edward are alone , near a small pond.  She pushes him in, and watches him struggle, until she hears someone approach and she feigns saving him.  She often fakes accidents, and spills hot soup, ink, and all manner of things all over him.  She often pokes and pinches him until he cries, but never hard enough to leave a bruise.  She trips him at the top of a staircase, and watches him fall down the stairs.  She pokes around at the different injuries and watches him moan in pain for some time before calling for help.  She tells him that she'll play hide and seek with him, has him hide, and doesn't search for him, leaving him alone until someone finds him, often locking him into his hiding spots so that he may be found even later.  She locks him outside when the weather is bad.  When he gets sick she watches him moan and groan.  She opens windows and removes bed covers hoping that he'll get worse.

CoMC Chapter 111
CHAPTER 111
Expiation
23 minutes
YIKES YIKES YIKES.
From the beginning, I started to feel kind of bad for Villefort in this one. But it turns out I’m not the only one. *Shudders*
First off, my prediction about Mme. de Villefort (Eloise apparently Nope it’s Heloise! Thanks, @edettethegreat!) fleeing did not pan out. Apparently, realizing that he too wasn’t perfect, Villefort changed his mind and decided he needed to save his wife, and flee with her and his son. At first I was like “OK there’s not perfect and then there’s she murdered your daughter.” But then it’s like… he at least attempted to kill his own son, so even from that perspective he’s in no position to throw stones. Which, fair enough, I guess. So he’s laying out this whole life they’ll have together that’s obviously not going to happen. He gets home just in time for her to have already drunk the poison and die in front of him.
WOW that’s rough. And then he looks for his son and I’m like “oh nooooo.” And he previously levied the accusation that if he didn’t stop her her son would be next, and she was like “I WOULD NEVER!! THIS HAS ALL BEEN FOR HIM!!” but now she’s like “I’m a good mother. And a good mother never departs without her son.” And Edward--who was a horrible little child and would almost certainly have grown up into a horrible man, but who is still just a little boy--is also dead.
Then MC does his big reveal thing, and it’s great as usual, of course, but… he didn’t mean for this to happen. He just wanted the guy ruined, but not like, this ruined. It’s at the point where he’s like “...am I still on the side of the angels here?”
He really does his best to save Edward, and I’ve got to admit for a minute I thought he’d do it, but it’s too late. The kid’s cold.
So Villefort quite literally loses his goddamn mind. He’s out there looking for where he buried the baby like he did all those years ago.
I guess uhh… this means he won’t be helping Mme. Danglars out any time soon. Crazy to think a couple chapters ago, I was thinking “oh maybe he’ll accept Morrel into his family after all.” Maybe not.
And MC doesn’t even say “Three.” or whatever he’s on, he’s feeling pretty awful right now. He didn’t mean to go this far! He was just going to ruin his reputation/career and maybe kill like… one of his kids, nbd. Not obliterate his entire family and also his sanity.
He’s ready to make a change. He’s gonna take his son Max Morrel and gtfo of Paris. And Bertuccio gets left with Noirtier, which is sweet. I’m glad we stopped to take care of him.
PS: I’m coming back to this one after queuing up Chapter 108 because I just realized that Villefort yelling at Edward to gtfo of the room was their last interaction. BAWWWWWW.

Note
I really would appreciate a quick Dramatis Personae! I *think* I'm keeping up with the main core characters, but then with name changes and characters being brought in For The Revaaahnge, I keep being confused by possible interlocking motives and all, and it's getting distracting >_
Here’s a cheat-sheet with facts that are relevant to where you are. Feel free to send follow-up questions or ask about other characters!
Edmond Dantes/The Count of Monte Cristo – Notable aliases:
Lord Wilmore. An eccentric, rich English businessman. Associated with thehouse of Thomson and French.
Abbe Busoni. An Italian priest, who claims to have been present at EdmondDante’s deathbed. Also was confessor to Bertuccio, and recommended him to theCount.
Sinbad the Sailor. An enigmatic adventurer who runs with friends on the shadyside of the law. Has a hideaway on the Isle de Monte Cristo.
The Count’s Household:
Haydee. aka The Beautiful Greek. Purchased as a slave, though Edmond likes to remind her that she’s free in France. I don’t think you’ve unlocked Haydee’s backstory yet, so I just deleted a chunk of text that was here. Haydee is presumed by society to be the Count’s mistress, but she clearly isn’t. She’s devoted to him and loves him, but he holds her at arm’s length and tries to treat her as a daughter.
Bertuccio. A servant. Bertuccio used to be a smuggler. He has a grudge againstVillefort and tried to kill him. This led to him discovering and adoptingBenedetto (see below, under “others”).
Baptistin. Another named servant.
Ali. Like Haydee, (formerly) enslaved, but free in France. Had his tongue cut out years ago, and can probably do anything. Like lasso stampeding horses.
The Mondego/Morcerf household.
Fernand Mondego, once a Catalan fisherman (in 1815). He joined the army and became a general at the court of Ali Pasha in Janina, who made Fernand fabulously wealthy. Fernandbought himself a whole new identity as the Count deMorcerf, and tried to hide all evidence of his life as simple Fernand Mondego.
Mercedes. Fernand’s wife, and thus the Countess de Morcerf.
Albert de Morcerf. Fernand and Mercedes’ only child. Fernand has no idea of hisparents’ humble past and believes that they’re from a long line of nobility. Idolizes both his parents.
The Villefort household:
Gerard de Villefort. Chief prosecutor, rose to power by exploiting theknowledge he gained from Edmond in 1815. A royalist who tries to hide hisBonapartist father from view.
Heloise. M. Villefort’s second wife. Much less rich than his first wife, whichshe resents. Interested in toxicology. Hates Valentine because she sees her as a rival to her own son, Edward. (Edward stands to inherit much less money than Valentine).
Valentine. Villefort’s daughter from his firsts marriage. She stands toinherent a massive fortune from her maternal grandparents, as their onlygrandchild, and from her doting paternal grandfather Noirtier. She’s engaged to Franz d’Epinay, but loves Maximilian Morrel.
Noirtier. Villefort’s father. Villefort changed his own name in order to escapeassociation with his father. An ardent Bonapartist. In 1815 he was involved inthe murder of a royalist, and Villefort helped him cover it up. Loves Valentinedearly, and she loves and takes care of him in return.
Barrois. Noirtier’ faithful servant.
Edward. Heloise’s son with Villefort. She spoils him and is extremely jealousover his well-being, leading to her hatred for Valentine. Edward is a generally unpleasant child, and doesn’t get along with Noirtier or Valentine. Noirtier plans to leave all his money to Valentine, none to Edward - another source of tension between Valentine and Heloise.
The Danglars household:
Danglars. An extremely rich banker. In 1815, he was first mate on the shipEdmond was to be captain of. Now a baron.
Hermine. Danglars’ wife. She and her husband don’t get along well, and heappears to know about and have no problem with her affairs. Her current loveris Lucien Debray, and years ago she had an affair with Villefort.
Eugenie. The Danglars’ only child. Eugenie is engaged to Albert, but the twodon’t much like each other. This is only partly because Eugenie is Super Gay.
Louise d'Armilly. Eugenie’s piano teacher and particular friend.
Lucien Debray. Madame Danglars’ current lover. Also a friend of Albert andmember of his social circle. Aspiring politician.
The Morrels:
M. Morrel. Edmond’s old boss, who was like a second father to him. Lord Wilmore and Sinbad the Sailor saved the family name and fortunes.
Maximilian. Morrel’s son, who is in the army and recently returned fromservice. Maximilian loves Valentine, but she’s betrothed to Franz d'Epinay andher father would never allow the match. He’s recently become friends with theCount of Monte Cristo.
Julie. Morrel’s daughter. Married to Emmanuel. Super nice people, both of them. Emmanuel inherited the family business.
Albert’s circle:
Franz d'Epinay. Albert’s bff, who went to Rome with him. Franz’s fatherdied when he was young, and he has no other family. Hence, Franz is the Baron d’Epinay.Franz is engaged to Valentine, and shows no particular feeling one way or theother about the match.
Lucien Debray. See above. A rising young politician, cynical and snarky.
Charles Beauchamp. A journalist. Often seen snarking with Debray.
Chateau-Renaud. “He’s just zis guy, ya know?” (CR is another rich dude whohangs around and doesn’t do anything important except introduce Morrel toAlbert and company. You can safely forget about him.)
Others:
Gaspard Caderousse. A small time criminal (ex-innkeeper),who hasn’t made it big like the rest of Team Screw Over Edmond. Has worked withBenedetto in the past. He’s lying low after committing a murder and losing hiswife, La Carconte.
Benedetto: Bertuccio found Villefort trying to bury a box inhis garden at Auteuil, and in that box he found a baby. Bertuccio’s sisteradopted the baby and named him Benedetto. Benedetto’s Trouble with a capital T,and nearly killed his own adopted mother while trying to extort money out ofher. Bertuccio hasn’t seen him since.
“Andrea Cavalcanti”: An entirely ficticious identity spuninto existence by the count. “Andrea” is a rich, Italian nobleman who has recentlybeen reunited with his lost father. He’s looking for a wife to bestow hismassive wealth on. In reality, Andrea is just Benedetto, whom the count summonedand is paying a huge allowance to appear in society as Andrea. (Benedetto doesn’t know why the Count is interested in him, but he has A Theory. ...it is wrong.)
The house at Auteuil: This house used to belong to theparents of Villefort’s first wife (Valentine’s maternal grandparents). This isthe house where Villefort buried Benedetto as a baby, and where Bertuccioattempted to murder Villefort. The Count of Monte Cristo recently purchased it,prompting Bertuccio to reveal the whole story of his past.

CoMC Chapter 58
CHAPTER 58
M. Noirtier de Villefort
22 minutes
OK, today was a day where I actually drove, so I’ve read 3 chapters without writing anything. Challenge: To keep commentary to the chapter. I got this! Any prediction I make is a prediction I had during the chapter, I promise--I finalized them mentally just to make sure. Any actually correct prediction is not evidence of cheating, but you’ll have to take my word for it.
So! I think I figured out who Franz is! Like, every other TNG character has been the kid of someone we’ve heard before. I believe Franz is the son of that dude Noirtier killed in like Chapter 11. Cuz he seems really unhappy about his beloved granddaughter’s impending nuptials. And Villefort’s hinting like crazy about how “whoever might’ve killed the guy should be super happy about this alliance.”
Also neat: Adorable Valentine speaks fluent Noirtier. Even though he can’t move or speak, his mind’s intact, and she can understand him in eye-language. Actually, so can her father, he just chooses not to. He totally ignores what gramps is saying a few times in this chapter, which is a serious jerk move. Got a nice loyal servant, though.
Also stepmom’s like “Should I send in Edward?” And Noirtier’s like “NO.” because that kid’s legit horrible. Omg who even knows what he does to a paralyzed guy when no one’s around?? So Valentine comes in and has a full conversation with him. It’s great. Except the part where she goes “gee, it’s a shame--at one point in your life you would’ve been able to protect me, but right now you just be sad. Sucks, huh?” which is pretty harsh. But then she plays the dictionary game and figures it out. And we’re calling for… a notary!
