Day 185

February 3, 2023

Last day of work with the environmental historic preservation (EHP) cadre! We filled out some of the AmeriCorps round 2 project debrief and worked on cards for the EHP staff. Then we had an EHP team meet to review some information:

The Federal Flood Risk Management Standard (FFRMS) applies to structures, not facilities. This standard will kick in when a structure is significantly damaged and repairs would cost at least half of the structure’s market value. A structure in a floodplain that is significantly damaged may need to be flood-proofed, relocated, elevated, or demolished. If the structure only sustained minor damage, FFRMS does not apply, though the 8-step process still needs to occur due to potential impacts on the floodplain (EO 11988 and EO 11990).

Critical actions, such as repairing a firehouse, should allow the facility to remain operational in the event of a 500-year flood. However, these structures may be “anchored” to a location, as they need to remain in proximity to the community they serve; in the event of significant damage, they may only be able to be flood-proofed or elevated when they are repaired. If only damaged to a minor degree, they will be repaired to a similar condition they existed previously.

The Historic Registry does not protect buildings from demolition. If a historic building is on private property, it may be demolished by the owner.

Our EHP project lead gave us a bit more training on the Environmental Management Information System (EMIS) afterward. EMIS originally contained much of the project information that was moved to Grants Manager, including the project description and scope of work. About the only thing that remains in EMIS is the environmental and historic review. I’ll update the EHP informational post with the additional stuff we learned once I get around to it.

The EHP staff held a pizza party to celebrate our last day. We took some photos for the community relations representative report and a very brief video for one of the AmeriCorps project transition activities. We passed out cards, said our goodbyes, and left a couple hours early.

I got to the hotel and hopped a bus to Old Town San Juan again. This time I took my good camera and found the leucistic grackle again (photos to follow…eventually). It’s a male, and it was feeding at least two fledglings.

I explored some shops and saw a pigeon limping with string and hair wrapped around a foot. I gave it some oats, caught it by hand, and worked on removing the string. It first freaked out but gave up after half a minute of flapping. It probably took me 5-10 minutes to remove all the string; holding a pigeon doesn’t exactly make using both hands easy. I rubbed some hand sanitizer on its feet in the case it had any cuts and sat it back on the ground.

I guess it realized I was trying to help it by then, since it didn’t bother flying away afterward. Normally I would have thought this was a result of shock, but the pigeon was still walking around and even jumping at the other pigeons who got too close to its pile of oats. I returned to the square, took more photos of the leucistic grackle and its children, and caught the bus back to the hotel.

I am now the highest level iron in my clan, tho the previous #1 has a ton of gear on me including both Shadow and Tbow and like 200m xp and there's one other iron with like 25m more total xp on me also with better gear unlocks but I will be the first to max. It's more real everyday. Tomorrow I get the free xp drop and it should be a few hundo thousand into Agility at the very least. I think I'll push for 94 before the update, then see how far along to 95 that gets me? It's 350 laps which isn't too much, last push was 400 and that felt fine. That I might reach almost 96 before I have just Agility and Woodcutting left and that it may be sooner than thought Is rather nice. Might be pushing Agility starting mid December and looking to finish it by new years? Idk, The less flat out only agility I need to grind the better and feeling so close should help with the morale of it still being like 60 hours of Agility lmao.

Kinda crushing this final leg of maxing though, like straight up fucking killin' it tbh.
