I mean if you think you can just... just take that... that truck of yours and use it as a murder weapon and, uh... killin' people on the highway... you're wrong! You got another thing comin'!
I'm watching a bunch of Steven Spielberg projects, and I eneded up rewatching SPielbergs TV movie that helped put him on the map:Duel
This 1971 TV movie follows David Mann(Denis Weaver ),a salesman who is being chased by a murderous truck driver
Duel is such a bare bones thriller....That its kind of brillaint .Like the synopsis I gave,,,,Is basically the whole movie....And it works .Like this is a really well constructed thriller .
This is a 50 year old TV movie, and yet it still works as a intense thrillers, and there are a few reasons why
1.Richard Mathesons story is just really solid scary premise, being basically isolated with a driver who is actively trying to kill you.I'm also a country person so I have been on long car rides with very little around us,and ocassionally drivers who you think might be insane
2.Denis Weaver is a really solid lea.DAvid Mann is not a complicated character,he is an everyman put into this horrifying situation.....And WEaver embodies that so well,he feels like a middle age salesman in the first half....And effortlessly he is able to t make the the turn to a paranoid wreck .By the end of the movie he is a wounded animal fighting toothe and claw against a very fierce predator ,and Weavers ability to go from average joe to tottally unhinged is honestly amazing. Plus.....There arent really any other main characters,he comes across a few minor characters, but the film is really Weavers movie
3.We dont see our villain,we never get a good look at the trucker....And thats great, cause the motivations of WHY he is trying to kill David dont matter ,and it honestly makes things scarier .See this aint just a thriller....This is a MONSTER movie, and the truck is the monster ! From the Truck chosen, which is this greasy oily thing which looks like it has a face and a snout ,to the use of growls,to the way it is framed, which is very similar to how Spielberg would frame other movie monster like the Shark in Jaws and the T Rex in Jurassic Park.It is a hulking beast that just wants our hero dead
4.Spielbergs direction is really good, for a TV movie he does have visual flar ,not only shooting on location, but actually putting the audience in the car with Denis Weaver.I really think you do see in this that he will be a good filmmaker
I think if you like a good simple thriller this is a good movie to watch
Last week while on our way to see the Marvels
we do do a couple of pick-ups
we got our copy of The Nun 2 on 4K and
also picked Steven Spielberg's 1971 classic
Duel on 4K as well. If you haven't
seen Duel you should watch it when you
get a chance.
