I don't understand the problem people have with rewrites of Dracula that humanize him. Yes, Dracula in the original book is a pure representation of evil. But like Carmilla he is a fictional and almost mythological figure at this stage who evolves with the times. The myth of the vampire has changed, so it is logical that Dracula himself follows this model. The book will still exist, so what's the problem ? The same goes for offering him a romance, whether or not it is with a rewriting of the character of Mina or an another invented female character, or sometimes a woman linked to the Van helsing lineage, or even Van helsing changed directly into a woman !
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even Jonathan himself for exemple in order to explore a homosexuality or bisexuality in the story of Dracula ! Strangely I always see fewer people revolting when Jonathan is placed as a romantic interest. I totally see where that's coming from, but the fact is that their relationship isn't good in the original material either.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for the problem of Mina, a strong female character, apparently having her strong characteristics erased when she is made Dracula's lover... I don't agree.
Tumblr media
After all, it all depends on how the thing is done. Yes, the Mina from the 1992 film is not the one from the book (which is far from being a flawless representation of a strong woman... Yes, for the time when the book was released, it works, but in our time modern era, there are flaws apparently, as with most works dating back a certain number of years), but she still remains a strong female character in her own way and morally ambiguous in this adaptation. It's just a different version. I particularly liked the version of Mina in the canceled series of 2013. These 3 versions of Mina are all strong women on different levels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Don't make me say what I didn't say. I love the original version of Dracula, and I really hope one day to have a more or less faithful adaptation, but the rewritings of the characters of Dracula and Mina are not to be demonized. I also think that we will surely continue in the future to have versions where Mina and Dracula are associated together as lovers, as other times not. Maybe one day we'll even have a version with Dracula and Jonathan officially partnered as lovers. Who knows ? And everything will simply depend on the writing of the characters. On the other hand, yes, I am a little exasperated by the tendency to make Jonathan a character either bland or an asshole in certain adaptations. Give me the adorable Harker from the book for a change please... Anyway, these are my thoughts on the various adaptations of the Dracula myth !

Ship Rec: Agatha x Dracula from BBC Dracula
I can't believe I've found, after YEARS, another story which is mainly focused on the villain/heroine and their connection. Not talking about all those other stories where a evil man desires/loves a virtuous woman, thought this my favorite kind of entertainment. I mean vxh where reciprocity is key, and their story speaks to not a particular love story, but as to love stories themselves.
Take away the carnage and different settings, and what do we really have in 3 episodes? Agatha, a curious fearless woman, eager to learn about a centuries long mistery of a man - to destroy him. And Dracula, out of equal curiosity and fascination, little by little allowing her in. Allowing someone in maybe for the first time, revealing himself. The parts that he exposes willingly and those he doesn't even know about, his deepest fear and his true nature.
A show that uses dark fantasy, vampires, supernatural elements as an allegory for a tale as old as time: a man meets a woman, and meets himself in the process.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The night breeze sent a shiver up her arms. It was just the two of them left. Everyone else had abandoned the Demeter in a lifeboat, as she’d instructed them to do so (well, rather forced - she knew the power he held and she did not fancy any more bloodshed than was necessary). There was a somber tranquility in the air, the type that comes about when a returned soldier steps foot on his homeland, with one less friend and more than a life’s worth of horrors haunting his mind. Still, the stars shone bright, and that gave her hope.
“I’ve always loved the stars.”
Agatha turned on her heel, to see Dracula standing majestically by the helm, steering the ship with such ease she could have sworn he was a sailor… perhaps the sheer number of sailors he’d consumed over the past month had helped build up his repertoire of naval expertise.
“Like a thousand candles flickering in the night sky. A thousand suns, guiding one home. They truly are… beautiful.”
“I suppose they are.” She rubbed her forearms in an attempt to warm herself.
“You look cold. Here-" Dracula approached her and before she had the chance to protest, he had removed his coat and placed it over her shoulders.
“Thank you.” She met his gaze - it was piercing yet so very seductive, as though the devil himself was staring into her soul.
“Just doing the gentlemanly thing, and offering up my coat to a lady, as any respectable man should, Agatha.”
“You consider yourself respectable?”
“Borderline, I suppose, if we have to get all specific. The eating people bit is kind of my downfall when it comes to that category.”
“You are truly baffling, you know that? You are utterly shameless in a way that is almost crude… Profane.”
“I’ve actually never been told that before,” he replied matter-of-factly, with a slight chuckle brewing in his throat. “I’ve gotten ‘evil’… ‘Lucifer’… ummmm, ‘insane’. But out of all the people I’ve ever met I’ve never once been called ‘baffling’. And believe me I have met alot of people.”
“Yet you’ve kept none alive as long as me, if I’m not mistaken.” She was quick with her wit.
The count rolled his eyes. “One does not rush a vintage, Agatha, we’ve been over this countless times-“
“Oh, what, my blood just happens to be the best does it?” She continued sarcasticly. “The woman who you declared yourself was the closest ever to beating you just happens to have the most superior blood? Why don’t you just kill me now! Suck me dry before I can do anything more!”
“Nope, that is truly all it is. I just enjoy the way you taste.”
“No. No, there must be something more.” Agatha began to pace the deck, as though in her own world of thought and completely forgetting that she was in the company of another. “No. Dracula is particular and indulgent, a snob to be frank, but he is not merely a connoisseur. No, there must be another reason…”
Agatha continued to pace, as Dracula returned to his post at the helm, lazily steering the ship, watching her.
“You’d drain a warrior of his blood without so much of batting an eyelid if you felt threatened, but me- a woman who is determined to undermine Count Dracula and destroy him, and has proven victorious in areas so far,” she waggled a finger. “You are keeping alive simply because ‘she tastes nice.’?”
“Has it ever occurred to you that perhaps I am fond of your company, Agatha.”
“You’re a beast! You’re not a man! You don’t enjoy people’s company! You hunt your prey like the predator you are and always will be!”
The count tied off the wheel to hold it in place, and approached Agatha so that when she turned around, his face was only  inches away from hers.
“What are you doing?” She mumbled.
“I’m showing you.”
“Showing me what?”
“Why you are still alive.” He placed stroked a finger down her jawline. “Do you trust me.”
“I’d be insane to trust you.” But she didn’t flinch nor brush off his touch. “I know better than to trust a beast.”
“Well, you’re no simpleton, are you, Agatha. Just as I am no beast.”
And he kissed her.

Dialogue 4 Dracula/Agatha
Gesture 23 Caleb/Caduceus
And you know I have tons more. ;)
"Your hands," he says, affection in his voice as he turns her hand over between his own. "Your hands are always so warm."
She smirks, lets him lace their fingers together as she bites back against reminding him that it's no great feat to be warmer than the undead. Even a snake curled in the sun has a higher temperature than he does at times.
But she doesn't point that out, not this time. Not when he's intentionally being so… so adoring. She squeezes his fingers in her own and dips her head closer to his.
She winks. "Cold hearts."

What happens when a Princely Warlord meets the Chesapeake Ripper? When the most successful vampire of his times meets the most sophisticated and chivalrous cannibal to ever exist? When the Count Dracula of Wallachia meets Dr. Hannibal Lecter of Minnesota, a Lithuanian aristocrat by birth?
A crossover between BBC Dracula and NBC Hannibal. 🧛🏻👨🏻‍⚕️
Read The Veneered Men to find out. 📕📖

Dark Ships from 2023
It's not the greatest year for villain/heroine or problematic ships I must say. It was really hard to find new juicy stuff but here is what I came up with by order of preference:
Homelander x Starlight (The Boys)
Homelander x Maeve (The Boys) - in a smaller scale
Agatha x Dracula (BBC Dracula)
Eren x Mikasa (Attack on Titan)
Debbie x Nolan (Invincible)
Ikaris x Sersi (Eternals)
Motoko x Puppet Master (Ghost in the Shell (1995))
Charlie x Charles (Shadow of Doubt)
Alice x Luther (Luther)
Gabriel x Michael (Star Trek Discovery)
Guts x Griffith (Berserk)
Happy holidays, everyone!

I have been thinking about getting back to writing my fanfictions, the ones I removed some times ago because I couldn't find any interest in carrying on anymore.
I seemed to be unable to decide which one to start first, though. Maybe you can help me.
Tumblr media
There was Only in blood, with Zoe and Dracula and there was the Dragon and the Phoenix which is a Dragatha. (I have no idea if the links will work or not, sorry).
Tumblr media
To be fair, even if I am getting back to them, it could be some times before I post something (if I post anything). I won't do the same mistake twice and I will be sure to have enough finished chapters before I even consider posting.

"after all this time, did you think i'd let it hurt?"
dracula x agatha
Tumblr media
i caved in! i love this scene so much i just had to write this for it. it's pretty short and essentially just a retelling, but it was such a beautiful scene i couldn't help it. claes and dolly's chemistry was so good!
“You lose. You will live forever. In shame.”
Shame. Dracula kept his gaze on her. Everything he thought he knew about himself had been a lie. He’d been alive for so long everything had become a haze around his one principal goal; eternal life - a haze that Agatha Van Helsing had managed to find clarity within. A clarity he’d never thought to search for himself. For the first time in his many years of living, he questioned everything about himself. So much so he was willing to surrender himself.
Dracula watched Agatha, in the body of Zoe, wither away in her last breaths. His breath was shaky also, as he leaned over and picked her up in his arms, one grasping her knees, the other cradling her shoulders. He let her head rest against his chest. She was so very frail. She was in pain. And for once, the pain of another pained him to the bone. The count placed her gently on the surface of the table; the marble was probably freezing against her skin - he removed his coat and placed it over her shoulders, a gesture of care, before he was to do her a kindness in the form of a most heinous act.
Dracula took one last glimpse of the sun, shining in all her glory, before he hoisted himself up on the counter and clambered atop Zoe’s body. Her hair was the same dark chestnut that is had been all those years ago. Though shorter and straighter, it framed her chiseled face just as it had that balmy night aboard the Demeter. He couldn’t help but admire her natural beauty. Dracula gently brushed her hair off her neck and slightly pulled the neck of her shirt down to allow him easier access to that vital artery, careful not to scratch her skin with his nails as though he wasn’t just about to tear her throat out with his teeth.
Dracula, placed a gentle kiss to her cheek. “Goodbye... Agatha.”
And thenhe bore his teeth and sunk his fangs deep into her flesh.
She did not taste good. The exquisite saltiness and cherry-hints of her blood were no longer, instead replaced by a liquid so foul, so acidic it felt toxic against his tongue. Bush he didn’t spit it out. He kept sucking and drinking and sucking and drinking, every swallow burning his throat from the inside out.
But he masked the suffering with something beautiful for her.
“This isn’t real. This is a dream.”
“Of course it is.”
“You’re drinking my blood. And my blood is deadly to you.”
“Yes.”
“So you’ll die...”
Dracula finally pulled away, thick poison driping down his chin, his eyes as black as the ace of spades. Her breathing had stopped, and he knew he too was not far off. He took one final gasp of air into his lungs, before collapsing atop her.
“So will you.”
The world around him dissipated out, as his consciousness met hers within that glorious dream land. His vision filled with a warming, comforting yellow light, like fire.
He could feel a soft, feminine touch on his back, and as he opened his eyes, he met her gaze. That kind, blue gaze of hers. He was with her, his body over her but this time he wasn’t drinking her blood, but kissing her neck. Tenderly. He felt the lust to worship her, surge through his veins.
His intelligent, witty, most unorthodox Agatha.
After all she’d been though, he wanted to make her final moments as beautiful as possible. And this was perfect.
Dracula pulled away from the kiss to gaze into her eyes once more, her hands cupping his cheeks. His fingertips grazed her chest as he rolled onto his side, immersed in her embrace. He allowed his lips to linger along her collarbones, lazily placing his leg over her lower thigh, velvet covering maintaining her modesty. She was truly beautiful.
And as they lay there in their nakedness, embraced in the arms of each other, they became enveloped in a bright sunlight. It wasn’t painful, but warm, pleasurable. All-consuming, yet tranquil.
“After all this time, did you think I’d let it hurt?”
