screen rant babe - two
Tumblr media
warnings: fluff galoreeeeee word count: 1067 a/n: hi friends! it's finally here. i've never actually been to disneyland so there's probably some inaccuracies there. this is short but i promise the next part will be everything y'all are wishing for hehe. otherwise this was really fun to write, and i hope you enjoy it! reblogs and feedback about my work is deeply appreciated. <3
‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵︵‿︵‿︵
when jack suggested going to disneyland, you laughed and agreed to go thinking it would never happen - that it was just quick infatuation and that you'd never see him again. boy, were you wrong.
he had found and followed you on all of your public social media accounts and even posted about your interview on instagram. his blank stare and painfully obvious crush on you quickly became a meme in the avatar fandom. it never really sunk in for you until you got a dm from the rising star himself.
in the brief conversation you had with him after the interview, he managed to get enough information about you that he needed - except your phone number. he internally cursed himself for that, and spent the rest of his day trying to search for you on every platform he could. most of the younger cast laughed at him for his vigorous search for the screen rant babe, but bailey and trinity being the absolute sweethearts they are were more than happy to help him.
it took you by mighty surprise when the notification of his message request lit up your phone. almost choked on your cereal, in fact.
jackchampion: hey! just checking in to see if we're still on for disneyland one of these days. i would also love to get your number so we can discuss plans easier (:
oh my god. he was serious. you replied as quickly as you could, giving him your number and telling him that you were definitely still on for your disneyland date. you were leaving for london in less than two days, and the way he was planning made it sound like you were going to be slaves to the mouse for a lot more time than you had. park hoppers, all of the rides, the ultimate experience. jack champion, full time disney fanboy.
his name and the selfie you took together at the interview lit up your screen. he was CALLING YOU. most likely to thoroughly discuss said plans, but it still caught you by surprise. he was so direct, so focused on you. cute, chivalrous, quick on his feet, full of surprises. what more could you want in a man?
you picked up the phone in a giddy panic, barely managing to let out a garbled greeting. his heavenly laugh echoed through the other side, returning your greeting. it didn’t take him long before he immediately launched into your full disneyland itinerary. “so i was thinking i could come get you around 7ish so we can get there early and beat the opening rush-” “7 in the morning? you’re crazy!” you giggled, swiftly apologizing for interrupting him. he was really crazy.  crazy for you, that is.
eventually you managed to figure out what you were going to do at the parks the next day. there were a couple rides you specifically wanted to go on, and he made sure to get fastpasses.  “i’m really excited to see you tomorrow,” he said softly, as if he was cautiously trying to navigate unsteady waters. “i’m really excited to see you too, jack. it’s going to be so fun!”  you should’ve seen the smile he cracked when you returned his excitement.
‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵︵‿︵‿︵
he showed up to your hotel with a giddy grin on his face at 7 the next morning. he was clearly well rested and ready for the day, whilst you had been awake the entire night trying to figure out if this was a dream. and here he was, getting out of his car to come around and open your door for you. he was the definition of chivalry, and it made your heart almost burst.  once you were settled in his car and you were on your way, he kept taking small glances of you. “did you wanna stop anywhere before we head to the park?” he inquired. “do they allow outside drinks? because i am dying for coffee right now.” “when my liege asks for coffee, we shall get them their coffee."
after a quick dunkin run and trying to figure out the maze that is the disneyland parking system, you both finally made it into the park. “so, what should we do first?” he inquired.  “i need to get a pair of ears before we can do anything else,” you replied, frantically looking for a gift shop. he chuckled before realizing that you were moving too fast for him to keep up in the swarm of other guests at the park. without thinking, he grabbed your coffee-free hand. it was electrifying, like an entire city without power had just lit up. you gave him a warm smile as you kept walking, giving his hand a good squeeze. he returned your smile, thankful that he hadn’t cursed this date with his awkwardness. you thought it was charming, his obliviousness in certain situations.
when you finally found a gift shop with a wall of ears, you were overjoyed. so many options, so little time. you asked him his opinion of certain ears, like if they looked good on you or if they suited you. he always said yes. you looked beautiful to him.  when you finally picked out a pair of ears inspired by the scarlet witch, you encouraged him to get a vision pair to match with you. he happily obliged. “weren’t you in avengers endgame?” “for maybe 10 seconds, i didn’t even speak,” “still an oscar worthy performance, and you met paul rudd!”
the small gift shop was filled with your joint laughter. he put his vision inspired ears on his head, and quickly pulled out his phone. there was a small mirror by the wall of ears, and he pulled you close to it so he could take a picture of you both with your matching ears. a bright smile and a quick snap later, he told you that would be his new wallpaper.  “so, now that you’ve got your ears, should we hit up avenger’s campus first?” “hell yeah, i really want one of those big iron man hand drink things…” you had grabbed his hand without question as you left the shop and had thrown your now empty coffee cup away. it felt right, holding his hand. like it was perfectly molded to yours. “and churros! we need to get churros.” it was going to be a good day.

The people who take those luxury Disney vacations are insane. Like. I work in travel right. I know how to get you anywhere in the world, and roughly how much it should cost.
Apparently the average Disney World trip (so like not even top luxury, just park hopper tickets and mid-tier accommodations) is over $10,000 for a family of four. Which includes flights that I'm assuming are domestic for that price, so we'll talk about Americans here.
Do you know where else an American family of four can vacation for ten grand? Basically anywhere.
A ticket from the US to Paris (one of the top cities in the world for American tourists) is around $400-$700 per person. Let's be generous and assume peak season prices + small city departure and/or baggage and call it $1000 per person. So we're at $4000 on flights.
A fairly nice hotel in Paris for four people for an entire week, during July (peak season), is around $1000-$1500. So we'll call it $6500.
The Louvre is free for kids so that will only put you out $50 to take the whole family. An all-access pass to Versailles, with lunch included, is less than $200 for everyone.
And sure, let's throw in a day at the Paris Disneyland. That'll put you out around $500 for the fam.
I have no idea how much food costs in Paris so fuck it, let's assume you eat out everyday and tack on a whole two grand for food. That's $500 per person per week, or around $70 per person per day. That should keep you pretty well-fed.
We are still less than $10,000.
A week-long and pretty cushy trip to Paris, including a day at Paris Disneyland, for your entire family is less than a mid-tier five day trip to Disney World Orlando.
I refuse to believe these people can do math. It is easier for me to believe that these people think Disney is a relatively affordable option (it's domestic, after all!) than to believe they genuinely think spending several days in fucking Orlando, Florida is worth thousands and thousands of dollars.
If you scrimped and saved more than I did here (went off-season, less cushy hotels, grocery shopped) you could literally take your family anywhere in the fucking world for ten thousand dollars.
Kill the fucking mouse.

one of the funniest nuggets of knowledge that comes with being a parks nerd is that tokyo disney and disneysea are consistently regarded as THE best of the disney parks including disneyland and they are a) the only ones not owned by disney in any way and b) far and away much more affordable to visit than the american/european parks with a tiered system to accommodate different financial contexts like students and children and coming after school or during off peak or on the weekdays
for example. an adult can get a "fixed time" ticket at tokyo disney where for 50-60 dollars you can enter the park starting at 10:30. too rich for your blood? you can pay 43 dollars to come at 3 pm. you can come at 5 pm for 30 dollars! disabled adults get discounts with a standard full day ticket WITH an accompanying guest being 50 bucks max.
the most expensive ticket i could find on the current calendar was about 63.50.
the lowest price for a single day ticket to disneyland (NOT including park hopper to california adventure) according to their website is over 100 dollars. they raise ticket prices basically annually.

I didn't upload my disney trip because I felt guilty I was at Disney and my husband is overseas and miserable doing army stuff and I just felt like such a bad spouse. Sometimes I wonder if I'm on the spectrum because I just do not comprehend social cues. However, he's on a neat Christmas trip right now in Rome and seemingly doing some cool once-in-a-lifetime Christmas stuff right now. So I think its ok. I don't know how much I'm typing so Ill put it under a keep-reading tag. But my in-laws didn't want me to be alone for Christmas so they paid for my Disneyland ticket..I mean I went and bought the tickets because I get a discount but they paid me back. I drove to their house 8 hours away and we all shuttled in a car and drove the 6 more hours to Disney. I honestly think in many ways Disneyland is superior to Disneyworld. The primary reason I'd ever want to go back to DW would be for the food/wine festivals in Epcot. I think its like a great woo-girl-girls-trip and I'd like to go with my sisters one day.
anyway.
Tumblr media
We visited a food-hall in LA the day we got there. Me and my husband took my MIL to a couple food halls in Atlanta and she thought it was a neat idea and found one in LA and wanted to show her family. I forgot what it was called already but I got a pastry and a creme brulee coffee that got actually torched like a creme brulee. They also had a southern food restaurant and I got shrimp and grits just so I can judge it as I lived in Georgia for long. It was pretty good. Bit greasy but the food hall itself was really cute. I just honestly with these food halls, I need more kitschy shopping.
We then went to the Disney shopping district and you can judge but I did spend a lot of money on starwars earrings and all the simba merch I could find. Which was not that much but still very expensive. A lot of stuff is under construction. I really just wanted some Christmas themed cocktails and their main bar was down.
we spent the next couple days at CA and DL. We had park hoppers. I wanted to do the Festival of the Holidays which I thought was a bit disappointing compared to the food and wine I've had in epcot in the past.
I took a lot of clips rather than pictures because I thought about posting to youtube but I don't think I will. I did upload them all to facebook though.
The festival alcohol I swear didn't have alcohol in it. For the record I rarely ever drink alcohol ever. But for this trip I kinda just wanted to relax and not rush ride to ride and just browse and sip something that tasted like Christmas.
There is an interesting food dynamic with my in-laws that I can't explain the entire situation here but I did have to wander off a bit in search of the food. I got a turkey thanksgiving empanada which was pretty good and I think my favorite thing I had was the tamales and there were some little chicken bites that were good too. But these sandwiches were a bit of a disappointment and I found hair in the coleslaw.
random photos. We accidentally found Tiana by herself and we got a photo and she was absolutely lovely. I really wanted to buy some sort of a spirit jersey and I just couldn't find one that I thought was worth it. They did have a red The Lion King one but it was kind of too-red for me. I did find this green lion king hoody though which was nice. I got a lot of compliments on my everything..I swear to god this random guy came up to me like a cartoon character and he yells "WHERE DID YOU GET THAT SIMBA" the one I have hooked onto my shoulder. As he screams it about 15 of his own little magnitized character clip ons and pins pop off of him. It reminded me of the witch from the bugs bunny cartoons where her hair pins would fall out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did get to see the Festival of the Lion King show. I've never seen this one. I've seen the one at Disneyworld years ago which was really cool. I didn't know DL had one and I guess this is one of its last performances so I teared up a little.
Primarily me and my SIL who I absolutely love spent a lot of time in Star Wars. I had forgotten until we were wandering around that DL is the one place that has the Cal Kestis lightsaber so I went on a hunt to find it. I'm not gonna buy it but I did find it! I also was not fast enough to get a photo with kylo ren but I didn't realize they had little R2D2s walking the park either. I don't think they have R2 at DW.
I also am a bad planner. I'm not one of those disney adults that can plan out an entire day. I was afraid to try and reserve any sort of dining because again the odd food situation. But I did manage to sneak into Ogas Cantina which was imo, a much better experience then the one in orlando by far. It seemed bigger, more spacious and the food was actual food and these were the strongest drinks I'd had in the park.
Tumblr media
They tell you you have 45 mins and you have to get out but we stayed a bit later than that and nobody harassed us. If I went back to DL again I'd hundred percent try and get a reservation here and at the Blue Bayou again. I was also trying to refresh the app to look for an opening in lamplight lounge but alas, it did not open.
Tumblr media
the new Marvel version of Tower of Terror I thought was also a lot of fun. And the Haunted Mansion! I feel like like they should leave it Nightmare Before Christmas all the time! I've never been on it this time of year at DW but it was wonderful here at DL. My first time seeing the Jack Skellington stuff. Also! Jack was out as a character wandering the park which I'd never seen before either.
I have to say I was really impressed with the handicap accessibility of some rides. My FiL is blind and utilizes a wheelchair most times and we managed to take him on Mickeys Runaway Rail and I was very impressed with the transfer lane for that. Very impressed with the cast members.
but I think my favorite rides are still Rise of the Resistance and lowkey, Smugglers Run. I feel like everybody hates on Smugglers Run but my stomach and chest hurt so bad from laughing. This ride was hilarious with the right group of people. 6 of us went in and I swear my MILs elderly sister was coming out of her seatbelt rolling around on the floor because my piloting skills were so bad. The funniest experience I've had on a ride.
Before RotR came out though I was a huge Universal Studios fan because their Harry Potter world was just so immersive (I'm aware in recent days HP is controversial) that disney just didn't compare. But they caught on with the StarWars real fast. It is super impressive and they just need to roll out more star wars add-ons. Especially to compete with Universals nintendo and how to train your dragon thats coming out soon in orlando.
The trackless rides are just so clever and I'm excited to see where that technology goes.
oh and the weather! I don't know how to dress for California and I dont understand it. Last couple years we went to Knotts Berry Farm and I froze to death every time. November and December I'm freezing. I keep expecting it to be like Florida weather I guess and it isn't. I keep bringing warm weather clothes and freezing. We were in LA back in June/July to visit the beach and it was 70 and I was freezing. Not beach weather. This year, I bring all winter clothes. Fleece leggings and tights to wear under jeans and coats and hoodies....it got up to 80 one of the days we were there and I got really hot. I brought a tank top and that was it. Everything else was winter. California you killing me.
but thats about it for now I think. That I can think of anyway. Overall both of my Disneyland trips I've had have been better than my Disneyworld trips.

Omg are you a librarian? 😊 Also let's say the ST kids go to Disneyland or a similar amusement park. What are some headcanons?
Hi! Yes I am! I technically am a "Library Associate" but it's just easy to say Librarian and I do have my Masters to get a Librarian job... I'm just picky lol.
Okay! So amusement park headcanons. I've never been to Disneyland/World so I can't really answer for that lol.
So, they go while college age!
Mike and Lucas love rides and want to ride everything. They are determined to ride everything and will race each other to get into lines. They drag the others onto whatever the newest ride is because they have to ride it together, except for Suzie, she doesn't like roller coasters. Dustin screams his head off and has lost a hat on a ride so he never wears them on rides anymore.
Max and El love the fun houses and also the little games, particularly the little hammer thing with the bell, El always wins because she uses her powers a little lol. But they prefer to be in the water park but will ride rides with their boyfriends.
Dustin has a quota for roller coasters but he will play the games because he has it down to a science and wins every time. He manages to get Suzie a giant teddy bear.
Will actually works at an amusement park during the summer, he has a drawing/caricature station. When he's not working and goes with the party, he has a couple of rides he loves and will ride but he's content with watching the bags. If there are live shows going on, he'll be there. His boyfriend... I'm thinking Adam, also works at the amusement park but he operates one of the game booths. They're stationed close.
They eat together.
El is a snacker (also a sweet tooth) so she snacks on pretzels, popcorn and cotton candy more than she eats actual food. She may get like chicken tenders but she won't finish them. She always gets ice cream in a waffle cone because it's the closest thing to an eggo and the little supreme thing Hopper would make.
Mike likes hand held foods, so he gets sliders/burgers/chicken tenders and fries and gets a milkshake from the same place El gets her ice cream. They sometimes even share their milkshakes.
Lucas will eat corn dogs and fries, which Max finds gross, but Lucas asks what's the difference between her regular hotdog and his corn dog. They argue about it lol. They share a loaded funnel cake later.
Will and Adam share a half cheese and half pepperoni pizza, Will also orders a pizza with pineapples. Will gets caramel apples while Adam gets candied apples.
Dustin has to get a turkey leg and I feel like Suzie is a vegetarian so she brings her own lunch. Suzie likes churros and Dustin gets an ice cream bar.
Then of course they get a picture taken as a group every time they go! MEMORIES!
I might want to write something now lol

Test Subject 101: BITTEN Chapter 7: Finding the Kids
Tumblr media
SUMMARY: Hawkins, Indiana was a quiet town that travelers would use as a pitstop to Disneyland.
There was nothing special about the small community...Unless you're talking about the super-secret government facility at the edge of town that experiments on children and is home to a gateway to another dimension.
Now that's strange.

Tumblr media
The ragtag group of Princess Nancy Wheeler, loner pervert Jonathan Byers, Chief of Hawkins Police, a frantic mother with a bird’s nest for hair, and the freak with a nosebleed piled into Hopper’s car and raced towards the Wheeler household.
As you pulled up to the street parallel to the house you could see multiple shiny black cars parked in the driveway and the street in front of the pretty two-story home. The Wheeler household had been compromised by them.
You grew nervous at the sight of the cars.
“I have to go home.” Nancy stared horrified at the suspicious men in suits and earpieces.
“No, you can’t,” Hopper stated. He had a pair of binoculars glued to his face as he took in the situation going on the street below.
“My mom…my dad are in there!”
“They’re gonna be ok.” But Nancy didn’t want to listen. She tried to march past Hopper, but he quickly caught her arm. “The last thing we need is for them to know that you’re involved with this!”
“Mike is over there-!”
“They haven’t found him! Not yet at least.” He pointed at the helicopter flying around the treeline.
“For Mike?!” She screeched as she was thrown back inside the car.
You shifted your legs to keep some sort of personal space between you, Nancy, and Jonathan. But personal space didn’t exist when you were squished in the middle seat. Hopper got back into the car and turned to the three of you. “Look, we need to find them before they do.” He stared at you and you knew what was about to be asked. “(Y/n), can you find them?”
You raised a brow in amusement. “Is the sky blue?” Hopper glared at you and you raised your hands in surrender, “All I need is a picture of one of them.”
Nancy and Jonathan stared at each other in confusion.
Tumblr media
Hopper slammed on the brakes as he pulled back into the Byers’ dirt driveway. All of you piled out of the car and into the small home. You four marched inside to find the photo album book that Joyce had of the kids, while Nancy stopped and stared at the mess inside the home.
Joyce went into Will’s bedroom and grabbed the thick book filled with photos. She pulled out a cute photo of the group of friends dressed in DND costumes and presented the picture to you.
You sat at the dining table again and got comfortable in the wooden seat. “All the boys should be together right?” You asked. Nancy nodded. “Those dweebs are always attached at the hip.”
“What’s his full name?”
“Michael Owen Wheeler,” Nancy answered as she pointed to the tallest boy with pale skin, shaggy black hair, and dressed in a cardboard knight’s outfit. You nodded and sighed, relaxing your shoulders. You stared down at the picture of the boy, memorizing his face.
“Show me…Michael Owen Wheeler.” You exhaled and your eyes rolled back.
Nancy and Jonathan gasped and jumped back.
“Mom, what the Hell is going on??”
“Is she okay?!”
Hopper nodded and calmed them, “She’s fine. Just some weird party trick she has. She’ll find your brother, don’t worry.”
Tumblr media
You found yourself in the aisle of an abandoned bus. The metal interior was rusted and the leather seats were shredded and leaking plush.
“What. The. Fuck?!”
In front of you was the group of kids that were being hunted down by seemingly everyone in Hawkins. You made eye contact with them and they all freaked out.
“What is that?!” Lucas scrambled away from you. “A ghost??”
“An angel?” Dustin with his cute curls and missing teeth began to freak out, “Oh god! Are we dead?!” He patted his chest to try and feel his heartbeat.
“S-Stay back!” Mike Wheeler raised his arm to protect the young girl in a dirty pink dress and shaved hair.
“Eleven…” You breathed. The girl narrowed her eyes at you before they squinted into confusion.  “You probably won’t remember me but I’m an old friend.” Eleven took a careful step closer.
“O-one-zero-one?” She asked in a soft voice.
You grimaced at the name, “Yes. But my real name is (Y/n)-“
“(Y/n)?! As in the chick we heard on the radio? With Will??” Dustin was the first to eagerly approach you. It seemed to click with the two other boys as well. Dustin gasped again even louder, “You’re the flea!”
“Excuse me?” You shook off the confusion and returned to the task. “Look I don’t have enough time to explain all this, but you have to trust me. Where is your location?”
“Wait! How do we know we can trust her?” Lucas interjected. “What if she’s with the bad people? What if this is a Lando Calrissian situation?”
“Oh, I know you didn’t just say that, kid. I would never side with those white-coated bastards! I’m with Chief Hopper, Joyce Byers, Jonathan, and Nancy right now. We’re at the Byers’ home and we know that you’re in trouble. Now pleasetell me your exact location so we can help you.” You stared into Mike’s eyes as you pleaded.
He glanced at his friends and they glanced back as if talking to one another with their minds. “We’re at the junkyard. Eastern part of town.” Mike answered.
You smiled at him and nodded, “Perfect. Chief Hopper is going to go over and help you. For now, just sit tight and be patient. If anything happens we’re on Channel 11 on the walkies.” You nodded at the walkie-talkie hanging from one of the backpacks. You smirked at the young girl when you said the number of the channel. She smiled softly.
You blinked and you were thrown back into the Byers’ kitchen. You panted and took the offered napkin from someone’s hands to wipe away your nosebleed. “Did you find them?” Hopper asked.
You nodded. “Junkyard. East of the town. In an old school bus with white and red paint.” The Chief nodded and grabbed his keys. He was out of the house and drove away in a flash.
Joyce - the Amazing and Blessed Queen - sat a cup of water down in front of you. “You did amazing, sweetie.” She wrapped an arm around your shoulder and rubbed your arm in comfort. You could really get used to this mother thing. If you were a cat you would have purred and curled your tail. You noticed Jonathan and Nancy stare at you with wide eyes.
You sighed and pinched your nose tighter, “I’ll answer any and all questions when everyone gets here so I don’t have to keep repeating myself.”

Question time! What's your favorite Disney land that's no longer around? Mine's the original "Tomorrowland" (hopefully the right name) themed after space / the future and with all the corporate sponsors lol
Oh, what an interesting question!
The original Tomorrowland was such a wild place! It’s honestly one of my favorite modern lands, but I would’ve loved to ride some of those original rides like Journey into Inner Space. I’m glad they never changed that retro-future theming, though.
There have been a surprising amount of lands that have closed over the years. It’s a good time to quickly go over the difference between a park and a land, for those who don’t know (because I didn’t for a while).
A park is what it sounds like: a whole theme park. You need a ticket to get into it, and you can only go to one a day (unless you have park hopper tickets). Disneyland has only two, but Disney World has four — Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, and Epcot.
A land, however, is a section of those parks which has specific theming. I won’t go over all of them, there’s a lot, but some good examples are Tomorrowland like you mentioned and Fantasyland in Magic Kingdom, as well as Star Wars Land (aka Galaxy’s Edge but everyone calls it Star Wars Land LOL) and Toy Story Land in Hollywood Studios. As long as you’re in the particular park the land is in, there’s no ticket and you can freely come and go.
As for closed lands, I absolutely have to say the original Future World in Epcot.
Honestly, I would say all of Epcot as it originally stood, but Future World especially, because it contained a fan favorite Disney attraction that has been closed for years: Journey Into Imagination, the origin of Figment the purple dragon! It also contained several other defunct attractions - in fact, I don’t think any of them still stand today.
The reason Future World and Epcot in general has been so remodeled is an interesting one, and actually relates back to the reason Tomorrowland was remodeled so heavily; it’s basically an impossible to theme a theme park to the real possible future.
Well, you can, but it’s not going to last very long. Epcot was originally sort of a permanent world’s fair, with its attractions designed to be educational and innovative. Future World especially, obviously, got the brunt of this, with all kinds of showcases of scientific discoveries.
But you may have noticed a problem with this idea. While it’s an incredibly cool idea, especially nowadays science moves quickly. In just a few years, Future World and pretty much all of Epcot looked outdated already. The technology it showcased was no longer innovative. It was all yesterday’s news.
In order to keep a land like that accurate and up to date, it would need overhauls basically every single year, and that’s just not feasible (especially for a park that never closes for an off season).
So, Future World and pretty much all of the other lands and attractions of Epcot have been gutted. A lot of it stands fully abandoned, like the Horizons plaza which is only used intermittently as a festival space. It gives the entire park a strange vibe.
However, I’ve got to say I kind of love modern Epcot, too, even though it’s since replaced all its lands and has a lot of renovations planned. It was one of my favorite parks to just be in when we went, with the retro future theming of Tomorrowland taken to a bigger extreme. I’d still absolutely adore to see it at its peak of operation, especially when Journey Into Imagination was still operating.
Thank you so much for the question!! And on a side note, also thank you for reblogging my posts and promoting my blog like you have. It’s the only reason I’ve gotten such a huge influx of followers and notes and I can’t thank you enough. C:

verdantrivers reblogged your post “i will not do theme park analysis of the jurassic...”
#do a theme park analysis of the jurassic world movies
so it’s worth noting I only ever saw the first jurassic world, and i thought it kind of sucked, so I never watched the rest of them.
my main reaction, aside from “i need seventy Margaritaville Isla Nublar” shirts, was that their whole park capacity was extremely low and the resort price of getting a single person in the park was going to be, like. $10,000 a day per person. so i think there’s a lot lacking in the sequels by way of the park conceit, but given the rest of the writing that’s not really surprising.
free range ride vehicles? lol. lmao. i mean i guess at $10K a day and negligible hourly capacity it becomes sort of a moot point, but i think the interesting thing about all of that is that the inevitable result is that this “theme park” is actually an extreme luxury resort. not “a luxury extreme resort”, but an “extreme luxury” resort. already the insanely wealthy are the only people who can afford to go, but you know what’s interesting about that? it’s kind of the same problem disneyland has right now.
DL has a capacity problem. they own a lot of land in anaheim but not enough for the number of people who want to go there. so for the past 20-30 years (i’m really approximating here), they’ve been jacking up ticket prices. supply and demand, right? if you only have so much capacity, then to drive disinterest, you increase the ticket prices. it hasn’t exactly worked; disney is so successful in being THE place that people want to go to and return to that there is definitely an amount of “we will pay anything” to go there. and now a one-day park hopper ticket for DL/DCA on a high capacity day are OVER TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS. just to get in the door! that doesn’t include parking ($30), or food, or souvenirs. or hotels. the highest DL pass (yeah yeah, it’s not a Pass anymore, whatever) is something like $1400.
and you know what? disney is not disincentivized for their parks to be seen as a “luxury” product. the disney parks are the most consistently profitable part of the entire disney company. and i can assure you that profit is not going back into the parks much; relatively no more than any other product arm gets funding. in fact, in mostly just gets bled dry. (RIP to all the great live entertainment that has suffered lately.)
so what happens when you drive prices up for decades, completely detached from actual value? (unrelated: did you know it costs like $30K annually to be a member of club 33?)
well, you have a new problem: an american “middle class” family is starting to realize that disney dream vacations are way out of their budget. WDW is up there too, not just DL, because the hotels and travel are expensive as hell also. but do you know what the number one predictor of a family taking their kids to disney parks is? if they went as a kid themselves. so what happens when you have a generation of people who couldn’t, who can’t, afford to go? well, we don’t know yet, and also disney doesn’t care, at least in DL, because their problem right now is they have too many people. they jacked up the prices and tried to limit capacity and all that’s done so far is get them sued by passholders! (i don’t imagine this suit will go anywhere, but i’m not a lawyer, so who knows.)
anyway, what does this all have to do with jurassic world? again, I didn’t see the latest two or three or whatever we’re on. so this really lacks significant nuance and is mostly a reaction to the post about how Dominion felt empty because it was suffering the same problems “as a park” that the movie suffers “as a franchise”. I.E. the park designers trying for New and Novel and Big and Exciting when really it’s all messy and empty and totally lacking the critical elements that make it substantial and interesting.
I do agree with that analysis as a franchise problem; I think it haunts almost every franchise, any kind of episodic storytelling-- the urge to up the narrative stakes by upping the risk. I think that’s a mistake though, because 1) you eventually run out of room narratively, if you’re continually successful, and 2) as you grow the scale of the story, you also start moving away from the intimacy of your characters. And it’s very, very, very difficult to maintain a consistently growing ensemble. the characters we see in dominion are flat and empty and the stakes are impersonal and vacuous and there’s no narrative tension anymore because we’re not invested. (theoretically, i say, having not seen it.)
But anyway.
so my understanding is that the company that owns the dinos is doing this in a bid to create Bigger and Better and Newer, regardless, of, you know, ethics and sustainability and safety and whatnot. and the tumblr post is saying that this is a critical part of theme parks, which I think is a little bit inaccurate, or at least enough to bother me, even if it isn’t wholly untrue. theme parks are, generally, always building new attractions, and safety and interest are all parts of what goes into them. advertising the biggest/the fastest is a part of that (and it can get you killed).
but you know who doesn’t have to do that? disneyland.
of course, disney the company wants to see marketing putting up advertisements and driving sales to the park and whatnot. but disneyland has too many guests. they don’t have to actually drive people to come here because their problem right now is they can’t stop people from coming!
so why would Jurassic World have to? people keep coming to see the dinosaurs, generation after generation, enough where they’re willing to pay X thousands of dollars per person PER DAY likely, to do so. at that point, just having dinosaurs really might be “enough” of an attraction. you don’t have to dig into it being a zoo or not a zoo (or nahtahzu), because it probably already succeeds financially at its most central directive, which is get paying customers in the door to see dinosaurs.
I don’t think Jurassic Park(s) are quite a 1:1 to Disneyland, and when it comes to the storytelling, I can assure you that the limited plot construction makes zero nuanced understandings to theme parks; it’s just the conceit. But I do think it’s interesting that there is this IRL luxury ticket problem, and in my estimation Jurassic World has to be a luxury resort of a kind. I doubt they’re trucking in guests with $50 tickets just to get capacity up; the park couldn’t sustain those numbers.
On the other hand-- maybe this is completely the wrong way of looking at it! Disney also just rolled out the Halcyon galactic starcruiser vacation, which is the star wars immersive experience, and they pitch it akin to their cruise line packages. (From my recollection, it’s all-inclusive sans souvenirs.)
Aaaaaand it’s potentially flopping. It’s $1200 a night, per person. (Roughly.) It’s moderately popular, but the general consensus seems to be that the prices are too expensive to maintain full interest. And it’s not because it’s bad (though, god knows they also suffered from a lot of design cutbacks), it’s just fucking expensive. From observation, after the initial months, reservations seem to have opened up a lot. However! Disney is also hinting that they want to build one in Anaheim, which also could be that it’s popular enough with the wealthier crowd.
And then Disney also just went and did this:
Tumblr media
The luxury market may be well and truly solid, and that wouldn’t surprise me, to be honest, since wealth inequality is greater than ever. (Interestingly, I feel like this offering from Disney strikes about right on par with my Jurassic World estimation-- it’s about $10,000 per “park”, or $5000 per day per person. Presumably including flights-- which I would assume the Isla Nublar ticketing would also.)
So! There’s two ways of looking at Jurassic World imo. I really do think they are a luxury vacation in all likelihood, and in that sense you are on a completely different playing field. People don’t buy $5000 gold-plated donuts because they like them, after all. And regardless of that, I don’t think you spend decades building and rebuilding dinosaur parks if they were 1) unpopular on their own, 2) people keep going despite the fact that people have died and the parks have imploded.
OR, and this is more in line with the original plot, it’s all capitalistic roulette. Maybe it’s so absurdly pricey that they can’t attract enough guests and they can’t feed the animals. Maybe they’re cutting corners on design to save money. It’s not impossible. But again, beyond the primary conceit-- it’s a theme park, and the attractions are inherently dangerous to the point of death, beyond mere injury-- the text doesn’t bear out much detail. (Again, I say, having not seen the newer ones.) So all we’re left with is a lot of talking around stuff, analytically.
On the other hand, there is this weird thing about theme parks: they already are inherently dangerous. The animatronics in pirates of the carribbean won’t bite your face off, but you can certainly get injured trying to climb out of the boats. And how much electronic/hydraulic force do you think is behind the motions in one single animatronic figure? Now multiply that to moving a false room that’s bigger than a literal boulder. I mean, hell. The yeti cracked its foundation, and now it’s turned off for esssentially ever. Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not dangerous! That’s kind of the whole magic of it!
Theme parks and amusement parks and even carny rides are all about perceived risk. There is inherent thrill from walking that line between safety and danger. These are novel problems but they’re not unheard of. I don’t think dinosaurs would really be that much different. It really all comes down to execution, which is different than design (guess who cuts the checks).
Jurassic Park/World is weird, but in some ways I don’t think it’s unrealistic. It really is a matter of hitting the right or wrong market in the right or wrong ways. And where the movie flopped, out of a sense of lacking coherency or relevance or whatever-- I completely think the park could succeed, as an attraction, commercially and profitably. New custom dinosaurs or not.

Visiting Disneyland is a magical experience, and there are several Disneyland theme parks around the world. Here's a general guide to help you plan your trip:
1. Choose the Disneyland Resort:
Disneyland has resorts in various locations, including Anaheim (California), Orlando (Florida), Paris (France), Tokyo (Japan), Hong Kong, and the upcoming one in Shanghai (China).
Choose the one that suits your preferences and location.
2. Plan Your Visit:
Timing: Check the park's operating hours and plan your visit accordingly. Consider weekdays and non-peak seasons for shorter lines.
Tickets: Purchase tickets in advance to save time and potentially money. Explore options like single-day tickets, multi-day passes, or park hopper tickets for access to multiple parks on the same day.
3. Accommodations:
Look for accommodations near the Disneyland resort to maximize your time in the parks.
Some resorts offer themed hotels, enhancing the overall experience.
4. FastPass or Genie+ System:
Some Disneyland parks offer a FastPass or Genie+ system, allowing you to reserve access to certain attractions, reducing wait times.
5. Must-See Attractions:
Plan your day around must-see attractions and character meet-and-greets.
Popular rides include classics like Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, and newer additions like Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge.
6. Character Meet-and-Greets:
Check the schedule for character appearances and plan to meet your favorite Disney characters.
7. Dining Reservations:
Some restaurants in Disneyland can get crowded. Consider making dining reservations in advance, especially for popular eateries.
8. Parades and Shows:
Check the schedule for parades, shows, and fireworks. These are often spectacular and shouldn't be missed.
9. Stay Hydrated and Energized:
Disneyland involves a lot of walking and waiting in lines. Stay hydrated and have snacks to keep your energy up.
10. Souvenirs:
Budget for souvenirs. There are plenty of shops with Disney merchandise, and it's hard to resist taking a piece of the magic home with you.
11. COVID-19 Considerations:
Be aware of any COVID-19 guidelines or restrictions in place during your visit.
Check for any specific requirements or protocols related to reservations, mask-wearing, and health and safety measures.
12. Mobile Apps:
Download the official Disneyland app for real-time updates on wait times, show schedules, and interactive park maps.
13. PhotoPass:
Consider the PhotoPass service for professional photos taken by Disneyland photographers throughout the parks.
14. Transportation:
Plan how you'll get to and from the park. Some resorts offer shuttle services, and others may require renting a car or using public transportation.
15. Enjoy the Magic:
Lastly, take the time to enjoy the magic of Disneyland. It's not just about the rides but also about the overall experience and the joy of being in a place where dreams come true.
Remember to check the specific Disneyland resort's official website for the most up-to-date information and any park-specific recommendations. Have a magical trip!

The Most Exciting Disney Experiences to Look Forward to In 2024
2022 welcomed the long-awaited 50th anniversary at Walt Disney World and kicked off the start of Disney's second century of magic. With celebrations extending into 2023, this year promises to continue bringing exciting new attractions, entertainment, and festivals for guests to enjoy at Disney parks worldwide. We want to highlight some of the top Disney experiences that visitors should watch for in the upcoming year. From the opening of major new rides to the return of beloved events, 2024 is shaping up to be monumental. Tiana's Bayou Adventure Arguably the most anticipated addition is Tiana's Bayou Adventure, the Princess and the Frog-themed attraction coming to both Disneyland and Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in late 2024. This family-friendly ride will pick up after the movie left off, taking guests on a musical adventure through the bayou alongside Tiana, Naveen, and Louis as they prepare for a Mardi Gras performance. Bringing to life one of Disney's most recent and culturally significant princesses, Tiana's Bayou Adventure promises to feature vibrant sets, toe-tapping music, and state-of-the-art ride systems to fully immerse visitors in an enchanting re-telling. Scenes may include Tiana's famous restaurant, bayou landscapes, and lively Mardi Gras celebrations that capture the heart and soul of New Orleans. As Disney's first ride-through attraction themed to The Princess and the Frog, opening almost 15 years after the film's debut, Tiana's Bayou Adventure is sure to draw huge crowds and become an instant classic. We'll be covering opening dates, ride details, and tips for experiencing this headliner addition coming to both U.S. Disney resorts. New Star Tours Destinations While not as flashy as a whole new attraction, Star Tours at multiple Disney parks will receive an exciting update in early 2024. The classic Star Wars simulator ride will add brand-new scenes and characters, giving guests fresh adventures each time they climb aboard the Starspeeder 1000. Among the new faces riders might encounter is Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker's former Jedi padawan who has grown immensely popular thanks to live-action appearances. Other rumored additions include visiting the Black Spire Outpost on Batuu, the planet where Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is set, or experiencing new locations from the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Whatever the new Star Tours sequences end up entailing, these updates will thrill Star Wars fans who can't get enough of this fan favorite Disney ride. We'll share news on the opening date along with early reactions from riders as this re-imagined intergalactic excursion takes flight. All-Day Park Hopping & The Return of Disney Dining Plans Park Hopping Beginning Jan. 9, guests at Disney World with a ticket with Park Hopper benefits or an Annual Pass will be able to once again visit another theme park at ANY TIME OF DAY during park hours! Dining Plans After being suspended during the pandemic, Disney's fan-favorite dining plans will officially make their return in 2024. Both the standard Disney Dining Plan and the plus-sized Deluxe Dining Plan will once again be available for travelers looking to simplify costs and planning around food. Offering discounts and perks across quick-service and table-service restaurants at Walt Disney World, the dining plans can help guests better budget for their vacation while discovering eateries they might otherwise miss. With the plans back just in time for Walt Disney World's 50th anniversary finale, we'll outline what's included and who can benefit the most from these money-saving meal options. EPCOT Continues Its Historic Transformation As the multi-year reimagining of EPCOT continues through the park's 40th anniversary in 2022, 2024 promises to be one of the most monumental years yet for this beloved Walt Disney World theme park. While concrete details are still under wraps, Disney has promised more new attractions and experiences debuting across various EPCOT neighborhoods. Most speculation points to openings related to the World Celebration, World Discovery, World Nature and World Showcase areas. This may include rides, restaurants, and interactive exhibits themed around Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars properties yet to be represented in EPCOT. Whatever ends up emerging throughout 2024, it's sure to continue EPCOT's expansion into a next-generation Disney park celebrating the magic of possibility and the joy of discovery. We'll recap each new reveal and share tips for navigating the ongoing transformation happening throughout this fan-favorite destination. Special Events and Festivals Of course, no Disney Parks experience would be complete without the wide range of beloved special events and festivals happening year-round. From foodie affairs to family-friendly celebrations, 2024 will see the return of many popular festivals across Disney's U.S. theme parks. Walt Disney World Festivals At Walt Disney World, the fun kicks off with the Epcot International Festival of the Arts from January 12 through February 19. This artistic showcase celebrates visual, culinary and performing arts with special entertainment, workshops, exhibits and themed cuisine around every corner. Then from February 28 through July 3, EPCOT's annual Flower & Garden Festival invites spring with dozens of Disney-themed topiaries, gardens in bloom, hands-on seminars and fresh bites from outdoor kitchens. No Disney fan can miss the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival from July 25 through November 16. The longest-running Epcot festival spans over 100 days, offering mouthwatering dishes, sips from around the world, concerts and more. Finally, Festival of the Holidays at EPCOT and across Walt Disney World wraps up 2024's event lineup from November 29 through December 30. Holiday kitchens, joyful entertainment and traditions from across cultures come together to ring in the most wonderful time of year. Disneyland Festivals On the West Coast, Disneyland Resort offers seasonal celebrations like the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival in spring and the holiday Festival of Holidays bringing entertainment, cuisine and cheer throughout winter. Plus, the resort's beloved Halloween Time and Lunar New Year festivities will return with spooky and joyful fun for families and friends. Across both coasts, these spirited Disney festivals infuse the parks with extra magic all year long. In 2024 and beyond, we'll continue providing tips, reviews and recommendations to help travelers experience these can't-miss events at their best. Pixar Day at Sea & Marvel Day at Sea with Disney Cruise Line In January, two themed Disney Cruise Line sailings are returning – Pixar Day at Sea and Marvel Day at Sea. - For Pixar Day at Sea, Pixar stories will come to life on the Disney Fantasy through a cowboy sing-a-long breakfast with favorite Toy Story characters, Crush’s totally awesome pool party, themed activities and treats, a Pixar Pals dance party on the upper decks, character encounters and a deck show starring the Incredibles. - For Marvel Day at Sea, on the Disney Dream out of Fort Lauderdale, the largest assembly of Marvel Super Heroes and Villains on land or at sea will gather for Marvel Day at Sea for an action-packed day that’ll unlock the inner superhero in all guests. Pixar and Marvel Day at Sea offerings are included in the price of a Disney cruise. All the regular guest favorites, including Broadway-style shows, themed rotational dining, fireworks at sea and spaces and activities for everyone in the family, will still be present on all Disney Cruise Line sailings. D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event In 2024, D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event is coming to Anaheim, California with a fan experience like none other. From Aug. 9 to 11, 2024, this one-of-a-kind event will have spectacular shows, new venues and multiple days of entertainment and experiences that bring together all the wonderful worlds of Disney. On Thursday, Aug. 8, 2024, the D23 kickoff celebration will take place at Disneyland Resort followed by shopping, exhibits, panels, presentations, and more on Aug. 9 – 11, 2024 at the Anaheim Convention Center during the day, with the fun extending into the evening at the Honda Center—the bigger home to marquee shows. Tickets for the event will go on sale in Spring 2024 and more details will be announced early this year. Disney Lookout Cay in The Bahamas This summer, Disney Cruise Line’s newest, one-of-a-kind retreat on the island of Eleuthera in The Bahamas, Disney Lookout Cay, will open. As we’ve shared, when guests step foot on this one-of-a-kind island destination, they'll discover a celebration of Bahamian storytelling, artistry and culture. The vibrant island retreat at Lighthouse Point will be a unique celebration of Bahamian culture brought to life with the quality and service of a Disney vacation. Operational Changes Beyond new attractions and entertainment, we also want to highlight significant Disney operational changes coming in 2024 that could impact visitors' trip planning. Most notably, January 9 marks the end of Disney's park reservation system for most guests at most Walt Disney World parks. Implemented due to the pandemic, this change signals a return to more normal park operations with no advance bookings required. We'll outline the updates to reservation policies and what that means for planning 2024 Walt Disney World vacations. Additionally, with the Disney Genie service now complementing traditional FastPass, 2024 may usher in updates to this platform with new features or changes to availability. As Disney's paid line-skipping service continues evolving, we'll share key details to know before your trip. The Outlook for 2024 From major milestone attractions to the return of festivals and dining perks, Disney Parks on both coasts have a magical 2024 ahead. We'll be covering all these exciting experiences in detail, while also providing tips and recommendations for planning the perfect Disney trip around these new offerings. Whether you're most excited about Tiana's Bayou Adventure, EPCOT's transformation, or just being back at the Disney Parks after years away, 2024 promises to be an exceptional year. We wait to share every update and opening with readers and help guests make lifelong Disney memories.
