Hello! I have a quick question.

So, I started rereading itysg(ainly) today and a thought popped up in my mind; is your design for Rex Lapis the same as the one from cn? I know that, personality wise, he's more like canon Zhongli, but what about appearance wise? I'm pretty curious

so uh- i went through my files to see if i had ever made a sketch of zhongli in itysg and i remembered that i like- for fun, started making sketches of kinda mockup book covers? for some of the fics. most are just messy sketches, but a couple do have color. i think i was originally going to post them as a group, if i ever ended up finishing the others? but i never did. so-

as you can see, very basic, and the resolution is kinda dogshit bc it's in a larger canvas w the rest of the sketches. anyway, as for your actual question,

it's mostly the same, yeah. just like- add the earring, and instead of the archon outfit he's dessed in his nice robes

Delta Experiment - Update (+ Survey)

Hello, everyone! GonerBoy here.

I have some news. Not really good news, and not really bad news, either... but some news is generally better than no news, so I figure you all deserve the truth.

My mission’s been going well. It’s been over a year since I officially started, and I plan on finishing next fall -- so, about another year from now.

Delta Experiment is a fun series. But, it’s also one that takes a lot of time and effort to put together... and I just don’t have the time to devote to such a massive project at the moment. And being honest, I’m not sure if I ever will.

What I’m trying to say is, I don’t think this project would ever be fully finished if I tried to keep going the way I was before. And by the time I did finally get to the later parts of the story, more official Deltarune content would have been released, and I might end up questioning the use of continuing in the first place.

Not to mention the fact that I have other plans for projects -- some of which even have to do with Deltarune!

So: What does this mean for Delta Experiment?

Well, even if I don’t think I can ever finish the series properly, that doesn’t mean I don’t want to share my thoughts with everyone. I do think a lot of things about the series would have been worthwhile, and I would be devastated if I had to keep them all to myself forever.

So, what I’m thinking of doing is creating Chapter Outlines for the remainder of the story. They would give basic overviews of the plots and themes of each planned chapter, along with some sketches, illustrations, and dialogue for important scenes. They would release one at a time, and likely have some time between each installment.

This way, no one will be left on a cliffhanger, and some moments can still be shown in full - just, without all the in-between bits that take so long to get through.

Please keep in mind that these will take some time to complete -- I haven’t even started yet, and there are 7 more chapters to get through... ^^;

What will I do, now that Delta Experiment is gone?

Archiving my newest Deltarune AU

The first character I’ve drawn was Asriel, who is a mermaid (ignore that it says ‘siren’, they are a different soecies in this world too, it’s only referencing the fact that he’s good at ✨seductively✨ singing). He has recently moved next to an island where he starts to drown ships, presumably eating the passangers. But does he tho?😏

On the island two orphaned sisters live, December and Noelle. They’ve always dreamed about exploring the world and eventually settling down in a big city together. Only problem: they don’t the money or the resources to actually do so. Her sister’s happiness is the most important thing to Dess, so she’s secretly saving money for Noelle to send her away to relatives in the capital where she could have a career. That would involve her giving up her own dreams but she’s willing to make that sacrifice, but… she meets an ✨INTERESTING✨ person…

Asriel’s actual motivation for killing people is to protect his sibling, Kris. They are being held hostage by a seamonster, the same one who destroyed their kingdom and killed their family. Asriel has to bring food to its hideout to prevent them hurting Kris.😭

Couple of traditional sketches, the latest one being a little remaining lorework for Asriel and Kris’s past. Baby Azzy is so precious.🥰

I have some, like, season two stuff, but those are a little spoilery rn… But maybe one day I’ll post those, who knows.😅

anon i am [insert phrase with the same sentiment as “kissing you on the mouth” but without the weird connotations]. also everyone needs kitten seam

all right so here’s the basis for those of you who didn’t see the first post:

this is yet another deltarune swap au. i’ve decided to call it “mage from the dark” since the first characters i sketched out in it were seam and ralsei (who are swapped).

seam is a young plush cat (kitten) who lives a lonely life of wishing to be loved like plushies are supposed to be. sure, seam finds ways to pass the time—knitting, sewing, crocheting, collecting things, making tea, practicing magic, failing to learn how to grill—but it’s a dull life. then, finally, the other heroes of light arrive in ruintown: a warrior and a boss monster.

undyne, the warrior, was once eager to prove herself, but has spent her whole life unintentionally intimidating the people she was trying to impress. as a result, she’s embraced this persona, getting into fights and trouble, and often assuming a hostile front. coming face to face with the same childhood friend who abandoned her when something better came along doesn’t help matters, especially since she’s living the comfortable life undyne secretly wishes for. but a part of her still longs to be a hero like in the comic books of deceased writer w.d. gaster…

toriel, the boss monster, is the daughter of schoolteacher mx. kris dreemurr. she’s faced a lot of scorn for being raised by a human (since everyone’s too scared to say that stuff to mx. dreemurr’s face). she found solace in puns, and in her uncle asriel, who she was very close with from their unique shared circumstance of being a boss monster with a human family member. however, kris and asriel had a falling out a couple years back, and he moved out of their house, now working and living in his videogame shop. at least she still has her partner, asgore—but ever since he left for college, toriel’s started to wonder if it’s meant to be. isolated from her peers and doubting her relationships, toriel wished there was someone to tell her what to do, and, well...

it didn’t go as planned.

that’s the main trio, plus hints at some of the others! here’s some other swaps:

the rest of the class is alphys (noelle), mettaton (berdly), papyrus (jockington), carol (mk), sans (catti), maddy (snowy), and napstablook (temmie). there are actual reasons for these decisions, which i will share if pressed.

rudy is swapped with chara, alphys’s godparent and azzy’s best friend, who’s currently in the hospital after a childhood sickness came back.

dess is swapped with goner kid. they’re alphys’s auncle, who disappeared when she was a kid. (this is reminding me how messed up canon noelle’s life is.)

the castle kingdom was once ruled by ralsei, benevolent prince, but after the lightners abandoned the world, he felt he had failed his subjects and stepped down, instead working as an advisor to the new rulers. these were clover, starwalker, mr. society, and jigsaw joe, so as to represent four of the main residents of the kingdom: cards, stickers, chess pieces, and puzzles. (the other groups wisely chose to stay out of the politics.) the starwalker later adopted a ward, after no one wanted to claim a suitless card, who was a young jester named jevil. at first, starwalker attempted to bond with the boy, but its grumpy nature and general lack of motivation made it a somewhat neglectful parent, often handing jevil off to tutorial-maker queen. queen knew what it was to not fit in; although she’d formed an alliance with cards from the spades suit, she never truly belonged among the toys, considering she was a laptop (albeit with child restrictions set on her). as a result, queen tried to be a good mother figure to jevil, and the fact that it got her in the starwalker’s good graces didn’t hurt either—she was always eager to please others.

ralsei didn’t particularly mind his new role—he had a new friend now, after all. lancer, the jack of spades, was hired by clover to be the court party planner, and was known for his salsa, beanies, and hole-digging skills. but after a strange old turtle appeared on the horizon, lancer and ralsei began to drift apart. lancer stopped pestering ralsei to come on motorcycle rides, and to his surprise, ralsei missed those days, terrifying as they had been. and then lancer began to change. his humor got darker yet darker, his pranks became less harmless, his magic grew stronger. then, suddenly, he was back in ralsei’s life like he’d never left—telling him about a new "evil plan.” but unlike previous such plans, this one was frightening and unsettling. lancer spoke of a plan to create a world without a purpose, where everything was meaningless, and then, one day, to suddenly end it all. at first, ralsei laughed it off, but the more lancer spoke of this plan, the more ralsei’s anxiety grew, and the more he suspected his friend wasn’t joking. 

and then it got worse.

it really shouldn’t have come as a surprise when the rulers of the land ordered ralsei to lock lancer away... but it was the first time the former prince had truly regretted giving up his power. ralsei won the battle, but was devastated, and not just physically. unable to bear living at the castle any longer, he turned in his resignation and set up a small, peaceful shop, as far away as he could manage. but even so, he could never forget lancer’s words, nor the undeniable truth he had felt in them. and so, quietly, he waited for the world to end.

oh yeah, and then one day a strange knight appeared and the starwalker locked the other rulers in the dungeon and hired queen as the duchess of puzzles, despite her insistence she had no puzzlemaking programs.

meanwhile in the cybere city...

after a lightner accidentally took him away from his home, rouxls kaard has lived a vastly different life. he somehow managed to instate himself as the rouxler of the cybere worlde, because really, what is code but rules? he hired a cd player named k_k as his head butler, and speaker system sweet as his head of security, because the two of them were among the first to treat him with reverence—and to think, back home they’d never even respected him! yeah, he’d show that god damn(it) starwalker what he was made of. for a while, he was a fairly decent ruler—but after the knight came to visit, rouxls’s perspective began to change. 

of course, people had problems with this. mainly, a trio of artists: tasque manager, spamton g. spamton, and swatch, or as they liked to call themselves, tasque spam’n swatch. the three of them attempted to start a rebellion. it has decidedly not been working, but heck, they’re dedicated!

(yes, cap’n is spamton. i’m still working out the details with that—and trying to figure out what berdly’s version of neo would be.)

I just realized: True Arena Magolor (Dess chuckled. "You mean the Dark Matter Wizard?") wouldn't even have the mercy of going to Hell in Apologies.

Also realized why he's called Dark Matter Wizard, not Dark Matter King, despite the corruption artifact being a crown. There can only be one, and it's not you, Mags.

Did you just subtly imply full possession Dark Matter King Dedede in my inbox?! If so, thank you so much, I absolutely love it!

(Yesss, let's take all of Adeleine's precious people from her. That will be "good" for her health. "You're a lot like my brother!" indeed...)

That said, man...I don't think :cough: "Dark Matter Wizard" has the mercy of anything resembling salvation, even in game-verse!

I meant to write about this somewhere but a couple of fans have speculated that the True Arena isn't just a bad end, it's a bad end that takes place specifically after the epilogue. IE: Magolor loses to Mistelteinn and becomes RE:CROWNED. Which would explain why it corrupts him so much faster/why he reaches the point of no return.

Despite my carefully cultivated reputation for contrarianism, my answer to the first question is “not really.” When it comes to the canon, I’m pretty much a normie; the test of time is a real test. Back in 2017, all the literary bloggers were listing the books in their “personal canons.” I participated too, but introduced my take on the exercise by saying that I would only list formative works of nonfiction, particularly philosophy and literary/political theory, since my actual favorite books were so boring. I wrote, “Greatest writer of the modern west? Shakespeare. Greatest English novel? Middlemarch. Greatest twentieth-century novel? Ulysses. My favorite lyric poem, I tell you no lie, is the ‘Ode on a Grecian Urn.’” Then I quoted Emerson (my favorite American essayist, by the way) from “Experience”:

[I]n popular experience, everything good is on the highway. A collector peeps into all the picture-shops of Europe, for a landscape of Poussin, a crayon-sketch of Salvator; but the Transfiguration, the Last Judgment, the Communion of St. Jerome, and what are as transcendent as these, are on the walls of the Vatican, the Uffizii, or the Louvre, where every footman may see them; to say nothing of nature’s pictures in every street, of sunsets and sunrises every day, and the sculpture of the human body never absent. A collector recently bought at public auction, in London, for one hundred and fifty-seven guineas, an autograph of Shakspeare: but for nothing a school-boy can read Hamlet, and can detect secrets of highest concernment yet unpublished therein. I think I will never read any but the commonest books—the Bible, Homer, Dante, Shakspeare, and Milton.

So I have no quarrel with the books you’ve listed. (Caveats: I unfortunately must plead ignorance on the classical Chinese and Japanese novels; also, I never went beyond Swann’s Way in Proust.) Some of the names you mention are if anything underrated or not rated in their proper dimension: do people understand how transcendently good Wuthering Heights and Villette really are, not just as the stormy romances the Brontës are known for, as if they wrote nothing better than the precursors to Rebecca, but as genuine spiritual and social testaments, the prose successors to Milton, Blake, and Shelley, Melville’s trans-Atlantic sisters, as well as ingenious formal inventions to rival Austen or Flaubert? (As for “the other guy” though, I started but did not finish The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. The talent, it seems to me, ran in the blood only so much.)

If we must have controversy, since you mentioned Madame Bovary, I am ambivalent about Flaubert and his influence, though I should probably revisit him soon. (I read Madame Bovary, Sentimental Education, and Three Tales in my 20s, in translation, albeit with not-incompetent though not-fluent glances into the French.) All that fussing over the sentence, all that inorganic technique—see GD Dess’s recent essay against “craftism,” as well as James Wood’s “Half Against Flaubert” (in The Broken Estate) and Borges’s neglected “The Superstitious Ethics of the Reader” (in Selected Nonfictions) which I quoted here almost a decade ago—to my mind creates an immobilized prose, paragraphs through which no breeze blows, even in post-Flaubert writers as talented as James, Conrad, and Nabokov, and even the Joyce of Dubliners. But Joyce, exceptional in this as in so many things, then transcended the limitation of this aesthetic by making perfected prose move as poetry moves—with a word-by-word drama that opens up the sentence—rather than as prose does in Portrait and Ulysses.

Must we rank? Should we rank? Ranking is inevitable, despite your apt objection to its listicle extremes. Why would we not want to know what the best is? If resources of time and material are scarce—only so many weeks in the semester, only so many pages in the anthology, only so many days in your life—then it’s a practical matter to know what comes first. We just have to be careful not to be small-minded about it. I think of Orwell’s judicious comparison of Tolstoy and Dickens as a model of how to think carefully in these matters, attentive to difference as well as to quality. (This can be extrapolated mutatis mutandis into areas where social biases like race, nation, class, and gender may enter, as nation and class do enter into a comparison between Dickens and Tolstoy.)

Does this mean that Tolstoy’s novels are ‘better’ than Dickens’s? The truth is that it is absurd to make such comparisons in terms of ‘better’ and ‘worse’. If I were forced to compare Tolstoy with Dickens, I should say that Tolstoy’s appeal will probably be wider in the long run, because Dickens is scarcely intelligible outside the English-speaking culture; on the other hand, Dickens is able to reach simple people, which Tolstoy is not. Tolstoy’s characters can cross a frontier, Dickens can be portrayed on a cigarette card. But one is no more obliged to choose between them than between a sausage and a rose. Their purposes barely intersect.

My candidate for “best novel”? It probably has to be Ulysses since in its cyclopedic ambit it manages to contain all the others. But I acknowledge a spiritual dimension to experience that Ulysses is finally too secular, too satirical, to encompass, and this is found in Tolstoy and especially Dostoevsky.

Drumroll please *dururururururur* acquaint yourselves with Day q(≧▽≦q) (´▽`ʃ♡ƪ). While he is the same as the male character I sketched earlier this month, I chose to experiment slightly with his design. These are my comfort OCs [Day and Ammes that is] and I'm so excited to draw more of them, their romance, and their love.
