I'm not totally ready for DM's this week, but I would love to hear your thoughts about Ryo and Cyberdramon!! And if it's alright to ramble, seeing that they were both close enough to Matrix Digivolve into Justimon for the final few episodes meant a lot to me, I actually really like the two of them as friends and how their roles work with the others :D How do you feel about Justimon?

ah, that's fair! as for my rambles about ryou and cyberdramon, well -

first of all, you should know that i only care about the tamers ryou who's implied (heavily or not) to be amnesiac about anything before his tamers self; which means i don't look at any of the wonderswan games stuff, i only pay attention to his tamers self

with that in mind, ryou is?? pretty soft actually?? he's consistently nice to everyone, with the exception of when he has to restrain cyberdramon during one of cyberdramon's more violent moments. even to people who're being kinda rude to him (like ruki), he's still polite and chill. such a nice soft good boy. a polite boy.

also, cyberdramon - it's canon that the reason he's so violent is he's always searching for the greatest threat to ryou so that he can kill said threat to ryou. the entire reason he's so violent and gets in so many fights is because he wants to get rid of whatever is threatening his partner. it's really sweet when you think about it? violence is the question and he always chooses yes because he wants ryou to be safe.

and cyberdramon can be polite too! in the runaway locomon movie, in the scene for ruki's birthday party, you can see ryou chatting with hirokazu and cyberdramon sitting next to ryou, with a piece of cake and a plate held under it all politely, hunched over so that his back doesn't rip through the ceiling. such a good lad.

AND YEAH, THEM BEING CLOSE ENOUGH TO MATRIX EVOLVE WAS REALLY GOOD,, i love that it shows that they're close enough to do so - which leaves lots of questions such as, how long have they been able to do that, when did they do it, how slowly or quickly did they get so close, etc. etc.?? i just really love that detail. i feel like it's significant somehow that it's ryou's voice who calls the attacks and speaks more, unlike the other matrix evolutions where it's the digimon's voice that does more of the talking, per se. i dunno, there's something important there i think. ryou literally being a voice for cyberdramon, or something like that. it's also sweet

also i LOVE LOVE LOVE justimon SO MUCH. both the design (which is kickass, prolly gonna be a pain to learn but its NEAT) and also the significance justimon has as, yknow, a matrix evolution for ryou and cyberdramon. personally i would've liked a more draconic form to subvert the trend of becoming humanlike that all the other matrix evolutions have, but it does make sense given that it's a human and digimon mushed together. personally, i liked how cyberdramon's line went from monodramon, kinda humanoid dragon, to strikdedramon, humanoid dragon, to cyberdramon, kinda-humanoid but definitely more dragon, and it would've been neat, again, for the matrix evolution of ryou and cyberdramon to be more draconic (bc lets face it, wings. wings woulve been cool). personally, i think darkdramon would've been a great fit, one that's both draconic but also humanoid and certainly cyborg enough what with the reference book lore of being part of the d-brigade. (plus, darkdramon and bancholeomon makes chaosmon - if juri had gotten a matrix evolution with leomon we could've have a four-person fighting-machine in chaosmon. bye bye d-reaper)

anyways, that's been some Thoughts! i understand not being up to dms right now, but always feel free to ask me stuff about ryou and cyberdramon because i WILL yell about them. i made an entire 10+ work series of oneshots about the two because i love them so much. ( @digi-noir can verify this)

a tl;dr history //

○ Balo’s home life growing up was far from perfect. Her father, Lance - is an abusive alcoholic, and while her mother tried her best to protect her children - she also covered things up without hesitation because she loves her husband. It wasn’t uncommon to see a Driskell in the ER with a lie and people willing to back up the story.

○ Balo was conceived during the time Lance and Cassandra were seperated the only time that her mother tried to leave. She’s completely unaware that she’s not Lance’s biological daughter (as is everyone else).

○ She’s been attending Luxor since freshman year, although she had to leave in the middle of her Junior year had to leave for a few months to attend extensive inpatient treatment. She came back in April, although she could not rejoin the cheerleading and gymnastic teams until her therapist confirmed she was doing well (so the start of her senior year) because of concerns about her well-being.

○ She was disowned following her HIV diagnosis over the fall. Over the winter, the Fieldings adopted Balo.

Rules

1. Be chill.

This is a place to have a good ole time. We want everyone to be a happy camper, so if something is making you not a happy camper please let a mod know! Don’t single people out && don’t be a dick.

2. No god-modding.

Respect people’s muses and their muses abilities! We will not be dealing with auto-hits or auto-anything. Also, do not move another mun’s muse to another area without permission or enter a room that is not yours without permission.

3. 18+.

Don’t be one of those people who lie about their age. We have adult themes, we’re keeping this between adults. If you are a minor, we will find out and we will remove you. This is a matter of safety and legality. Muses also must be over 18.

4. In-character drama needs to stay in-character.

Please know the difference between IC and OOC. Drama happens between our muses but it doesn’t need to happen between muns! Any OOC drama will be addressed && if you’re having a problem please let a mod know.

5. No duplicates.

Right now we will not be accepting duplicate characters. We know Marvel has many different versions of characters but that might make things a bit too confusing! If you’re dead set on a plot dealing with duplicates (ie. Pietro vs. Peter, Spider Noir vs. Spiderman, etc.) please approach the mods & the mun of the pre-existing muse.

6. Please discuss major plot points!

If something involves another character PLEASE involve the other mun. Let them know what’s going on and make sure they are okay with it! An example: no surprise deaths and no knowing things your character shouldn’t know.

7. Muse Limit

Four muses per mun are our current limit. We use the PluralKit Bot to maintain muses.

8. Posting Order

This rule only applies to big events involving five or more people, or fights. To keep everyone involved please establish a posting order. If someone has to leave, they can either ask to pause or have their muse bow out.

Non-Fiction Resources for Chronicles of Darkness - General & Dark Eras

Since Tumblr appears to have a limit to how many links you can have in a single post, I’ve moved all of the Dark Eras and topics by category links to this post. You can find resources by gameline here.

This post is very much a work in progress and probably will never be complete because of the broad availability of applicable materials. If you know of a resource that you don’t see on my list, please feel free to reblog/reply/DM me to say what the resource is and why it should be included on the list. I’ll do my best to add it in.

General Websites

Crash Course: It’s free, it’s on Youtube, and it’s in a ten-minute episodic format.

Coursera: Coursera is a website where university level classes are available for free. You can also get certifications from Coursera for a fee so you can build your resume while planning your next chronicle.

Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History: Dan loves historical “What if?” moments, and with good reason. If you want to hear the most badass historical stories, examine how drugs, alcohol, and human stupidity impacted history, or get a sense of what it was like to live through the most brutal historical eras, this is the place for you.

edX: Another excellent site with free courses that you can upgrade for a certificate. A good place to look for courses in the humanities and religion.

Great Course/Great Courses Plus: GC and GC+ are not free services, but they have such an extraordinarily high production value that you can understand why. History, science, culinary theory, economics, anything you can think of is covered in the Great Courses catalogue. Great Courses Plus is their streaming service, which at $15/month for an annual subscription is a killer deal.

Google Books/Google Scholar: My first goto for research of any kind, and the first place I advise my students to begin their research. Seriously, I’ve written papers, then had them published just using these two. Use them.

JSTOR: If you have operated in any kind of academic circle for the last two and a half decades, you know JSTOR. Full access is tough to come by unless you are currently enrolled in a university, but you can still sign up for free to get access to journals on topics you just can’t find anywhere else (like the Mutapa Empire). Sign up with multiple users if you have to. It works. Trust me.

Open Yale Courses: University classes, taped lectures, and course materials, all from one of the best educational institution in the world. Take advantage of them.

The Vault: Declassified FBI documents. A lot more of them involve the paranormal than you may expect. An excellent source of inspiration both for things that actually happened or that people think happened.

Writing with Colour: The best place to go to check yourself for unintentionally problematic depictions of POC in your games. Also a great read if you are looking for details and cultural beats for NPCs you don’t share a background with. They are awesome and you’d be surprised how many chronicle ideas you can get just by binging their archive.

Crossover Chronicles

The Great War: Coverage of WW1, on a week by week basis, 100 years later. World War I changed the world, for mortals and supernaturals alike.

The History of Rome Podcast: Rome is one of the two cities that broadly unifies all of the Chronicle of Darkness gamelines. This is the best history of Rome you will ever hear, so I suggest using it.

Revolutions Podcast: An excellent look at what happens when people get fed up with their governments. A number of the Revolutions covered within have shown up in multiple gamelines.

Begin Japanology: A Japanese Production specifically targeting Westerners seeking education about what Japan is really like as opposed to the pop culture portrayal. Invaluable for games set in Tokyo. I used to be able to find all of Begin Japanology on Youtube, courtesy of the company that produced them, but now many of them have disappeared. You can find an episode list here.

Understanding Japan - A Cultural History: An excellent look at how Japan’s history shaped its evolution into the modern nation that forms that basis of the Tokyo crossover setting.

This Thursday we are saying bye to the Deluxe M20 Technocracy Reloaded Kickstarter! It’s been a great campaign, and our Kickstarter concierge, James, has been the epitome of good humor and helpfulness. Which is really not surprising since that has been how he has handled all of our KSs since he came aboard.

As of this writing, we’re over $167,000 and at 2022 backers! We’ve achieved 20+ Stretch Goals, which I go into more detail on in the Kickstarter section in the Blurbs! below, but I’m super excited about the TR Players’ Companion project that has been created with sections on:

This, to me, is one of the magic bonuses of Kickstarters. Previously, we tabled the idea of a separate Digital Web 3.0 book as not fitting into our schedule – but now, thanks to this KS, we can really focus on the best of the best ideas for its section, there are equally awesome other sections, and backers get the PDF for free.

If you recall, we had to cancel the last Kickstarter, which was for our new fantasy-genre game Legendlore because of the impact of Covid-19. Which is a phrase you’re going to hear a few more times in the blog today. We didn’t want Legendlore sitting fallow for too long though, so we’ve tweaked the KS and are looking to restart it next Tuesday, June the 2nd at 2pm EDT! Cross with us once more to The Realm!

The thing is, we’ve never before cancelled a Kickstarter, and we’re not completely sure how we should restart it. Not the mechanical Kickstarter process – that we have down! – but things like how best to communicate with our backers from the first attempt, and what effect will seeing our promo stuff again have on possible new backers.

One decision we made was based on the fact that like almost all of our Kickstarters these days, the text for Legendlore was finished before we went to the Kickstarter. Since we had started providing our backers with that text in sections when I made the call to cancel, we just sent backers the rest of the full text. It seemed only fair, and something like a thank you for their support.

That means that just going through that same reveal process isn’t likely to be much fun for those folks who stepped up to support us the first time. We clearly need to be able to find other ways to make the KS interesting and fun for those folks, and if we have to make those adjustments anyway, why deliver the text in stages at all?

So we took the text, made it all into a PDF, and we’re putting it up for free on DTRPG this Wednesday! That way, if you’re interested, and maybe missed the first KS, you’ll have almost a full week to read through the text and see if it sounds interesting enough to back! (Narrator’s Voice: It is.)

Also Actual Plays are coming! Keep an eye out this week and then into the KS month for Actual Plays of Legendlore on our Twitch streams, along with some surprise DMs that are extremely excited to run the game!

Meanwhile, I’m going to take this opportunity to give you another problem we’ve encountered that can be blamed on the impact of Covid-19. It seems like over a month ago that I ordered the PoD proof for Night Horrors: Nameless and Accursed for Mage: The Awakening 2e. That’s more of a single-product disruption, but across our happy little industry, convention after convention have cancelled for this year because of the, say it with me, impact of Covid-19. That effects a lot of companies who rely on them as sales venues, and even more now that Gen Con itself has cancelled for 2020. Yikes! So, to the blog reader who posted that I hadn’t updated the Convention Schedule below… well, I was blocking that out because it’s just too sad. It’s no schedule at all.

For us, cons aren’t about the sales, it’s that we enjoy meeting with folks face to face. We enjoy answering questions, spreading the word about who we are and what we do, and demoing our game lines. It’s good business, and it’s fun.

Fortunately, virtual cons do allow a lot of what we value in conventions to happen, as our crew who have sat in on panels and games have reported back to the team. And if you checked out some of the comments when I mused about us doing a virtual con a few weeks ago in this blog, they brought up the fact that some of our community can’t make it to cons, so a virtual meeting is actually better than a location they can’t get to.

Hmmm.

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!

Today in the US is Memorial Day, the holiday set aside to remember those who gave their lives for our country. As always, as I sit to write this on a Monday – as the holiday is always on the last Monday in May – I wonder at the fact that none of my friends in the armed services paid that ultimate price. Nor any family members going back several generations. They did their service, and they came home. Today is the day for those who did not.

An Alluded to Letter from DTM for Matthew Olzmann || David Tomas Martinez

and Vievee Francis concerning love, redemption, and the TV show Empire might not be the most august of openings, but like hypocrisy in this great falling hegemony, it’s all I got.

Besides, what’s history but a conversation we’re born into without context,

and what is society but three friends who keep dipping to the DM’s from a group text. Oh, America, where its most valid

ID states, I am Erica, in glittery pink hearts, the hologram hinting at the fact that this card holder has a dogmatic Top Forty devotion, only eats organic granola, and raises strays humanely.

It’s easy to be angry when the constitution starts for some, We the People, and begins for others, Well see, you people. Some can’t start a sentence without To be fair.

This is where, if I were a white poet, I’d be ironic, especially if I had, in the Stevens’ vernacular, a mind of winter, which is a generous manner of saying said poet’s emotionally snowed in.

It’s still socially unacceptable in my community to admit predispositions toward depression. In part because we think sadness is bougie. I sure as pig believed that I was too broke to be depressed. Machismo culture means, Matthew, that we never needed any other emotion than

power, anything but anger was middling, that I never had the courage to be anything but mean, to say, hey friend, I see your achievement. Hey friend, I see your achievement. Hyperbole shades in

what we are afraid to say. In my experience, when someone’s really feeling you, they’ll ask, You got some black in you,

don’t lie. Beautiful black women, ask me again what I am, touch my hair once more, tell me it must be the Indians in me. Tell me otra vez, while holding my ears, while I look up at you, no tienes labios pero tus besos

we’ve built so many types of pyramids. I can love you, and dis

like the rhetoric. If you say you don’t smell beach-y, oceanic, a wave breaking obsequiously, then you don’t. Skin

We up in church yet, Vievee? The dog and pony show of white tears makes some of us pretty pet-able. And here is where if I were a white poet I’d say black women are saving the world.

Some of the poorest poets swear by their Kraft. A politics. Perfection, beauty were never white aesthetics. Despite this, pimps put white girls out during the day, black girls at night.

Rachel Dolezal went on the nightly news and televised us with falsehoods, darkened us all, but she probably understood Louis Simpson best, who said every aesthetic statement is a defense of one’s own,

so when I say I love you, what I mean is I love what I am, but especially, maybe more so, what I’ve never been.
