Well F me, it's been 20 years (!) since the first music I ever released, The Stairs' Miraculous Happens, was gently tossed into the public world. It's a tale as old as time, you see: I applied for an artistic grant from my hometown of Dedham, MA to make an album of original music which would incorporate as many citizens of the town as possible—local musicians, the high school marching band, church choirs, local kids, etc—but I needed 10k to do it. Unbelievably, they gave me this money. So, Evan Sicuranza, Eric Meyer and I set out to make it a reality. It took years. We started from scratch and I don't mean that figuratively.
Evan and I literally walked into a Guitar Center carrying four thousand dollars, asking a clerk, "What do you need to be a band?" It was chaos. Those G Center sharks—crazed with the commission blues—were all stabbing each other in the back to get the most out of the two rubes who just walked through the door. We got all the gear out on the sidewalk and realized we didn't have a way to get it home. No car. This set the tone for the entire project.
Were the promises that our grant proposal made genuine, or just a way for us to start a band and record our first album? Well friends, it was a real transformation tale. What started out as pure lip-service to get some funding turned into a genuine, sincere mission. Over time, I started to love the community aspect of the project. Not only did it feel good to make all these connections on one recording, I also began to realize how unique it made the music itself. This doesn't sound like a debut record at all. I don't know what it sounds like. But I love it. And it's not just us—The Stairs—it's a town, too. It was a beautiful, unlikely way to start out on this adventure.
