I think what makes the Dead Boy Detectives so refreshing is it really feels like an homage to the classic "Monster of the Week" format. Sure, the first season is only eight episodes that are each barely an hour long, but we aren't just following along with some heavy plot that gets hard to keep up with; we also just get to see this zany crew and their adventures and watch their journey as individual characters. Each episode doesn't feel like it's just following up on the last; it actually has its own mini-plot and subplots that allow it to stand on its own, and I appreciate that.
(Also, I have definitely not been assigning each of the main characters to a member of the Mystery Incorporated gang because who would do that? Not me, psh.)

* while not a "character" in the traditional sense, I feel it has enough character to be considered as one.

I hate batman. A lot. I want to tear that man down, bit by bit. I want to write a story where he tries to kill the rest of the justice league in a paranoid haze, and then has to face consequences. I want him gone. Dead. Forever erased from existence. We keep the villains and maybe the supporting cast. We ditch him. We have to. He is one of my least favourite superheroes. He's always boring! So goddamn boring! I will preach until I'm dead: Get rid of batman!
Ditch the darkness! Give us more Superman and Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel/Shazam. DC should go back to their repository of old heroes, but leave batman the hell alone. Replace him with Wesley Dodds or something if we have to! But leave batman alone! Forever!

I'm so torn on where I am vis-à-vis Charles and Edwin getting together. On the one hand, thematically, it would be more significant if they didn't end up together because a large part of their dynamic is how co-dependent they are on each other, essentially being the other's only support system for decades. So much of the first season focuses on them discovering life outside of each other, both in terms of friendship and romance, helping the development of each of their characters and their personal journeys. Plus, I feel like media needs more platonic relationships between two guys where one happens to be mlm but who love each other all the same. And I've been loving watching Edwin unfold on a journey to overcoming his internalized homophobia with his attraction to both a crow and cat king lol. On the other hand, the plot just gives Charles and Edwin SO much potential as an excellent slow-burn friends-to-lovers romance where their feelings for each other are realized BECAUSE of the time spent apart with other people. Charles turned away the chance at a peaceful afterlife because he values his relationship with Edwin that much more. Plus, he literally compared the two of them to ORPHEUS AND EURYDICE as if he was intentionally trying to cause me a psychological breakdown. They weren't just all each other had; they were all each other needed.
