And Now the Calm

Wednesday, January 26, 2022

Jeanne got back from her mom’s at 8:00pm Tuesday, so we packed until about 9:30pm. Wednesday morning was the usual scramble of last minute items and going through the checklist. We agree that we will not leave until everything is packed away. That way we don’t have extra items we are tripping over for weeks.

We started rolling at 10:02. Ten minutes later, we realize that we need to update the packing list. CPAP filters are hard to get and worth turning around for. A quick dash back in the house and we are off.

Millie the RV knows the way so we set the autopilot and go take a nap.

Ok, that’s in our dreams. We entertain ourselves with music and podcasts and catching up on the many events of the last three days.

We admire the severe beauty of icy rivers and ponds. We pass a lovely snow dusted marsh fringed with swaying cattails in Connecticut. We make our traditional lunch stop at Reins Deli in Vernon, CT. Yum!

We settle in the routine of the road: switching drivers, filling water bottles, emptying bladders, navigation around NYC, starting a chicken curry in the slow-cooker to provide immediate dinner on a long driving day.

Around NJ, we realize we forgot to take out the leveling blocks. We don’t need them because we are going to FL, and FL is, well, level. We carry our leveling blocks on the roof. They are probably encased in ice and not removable anyway until we get to FL.

The weather is clear and the roads are dry. There is a big storm predicted for Saturday at home but we will miss it. We gloat.

We try make arrangements to visit friends in DE and VA, but all our plans fall through. The timing just doesn't work.

We stop at the Biden rest area on I-95 in DE and wolf down dinner. We drive a couple more hours to hopefully get beyond the Baltimore-DC morning rush hour traffic.

We spent the night at a Cracker Barrel in Maryland. 24° going down to 14°. We agree to let the heater run all night despite the lack of a working thermostat. (The replacement part is going to meet us in FL. ) It was hot on Jeanne’s side, but it worked out well. Tim was sleeping next to the back door which is cold near the uninsulated steel, so Jeanne piled all the covers on his side. We had a comfortable first night.

Downeast drive on I-95

Hi everyone We have to say goodbye to family in Bangor and then head south for the final stop of Summer 2010. A nice dinner of scrod awaits at the North Quincy Market.

It was the day after Independence Day. I woke up about 7:30 AM and met family to have breakfast. The breakfast room was full of children with their families. Breakfast was not very enjoyable but at least I was able to have some food and coffee.

We packed up the Impala to head south on I-95 and then I-295. We stopped in Augusta to have a look at the State House. I found it to be sort of "medium sized", close to that of the one in Providence, larger than the one in Concord NH but smaller than in Hartford CT. The only state house in the USA that is not bicameral is Nebraska. It has only a state senate. Everywhere else has both a house of representatives or assembly, and a state senate.

Going on I-295 to Portland, there is one toll to pay, until reaching south of the Maine Mall, elsewhere is free of charge. At the I-95 interchange with I-295 there is a toll booth where you take your ticket and then the final toll booth in Maine is just north of Kittery. Speaking of that section, between Wells and York, the traffic situation was backed up for miles. I think it took 45 minutes to be able to cross into Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It was during the peak of the travel season, Monday the 5th July 2010 being a legal holiday so everyone was rushing to return to NH, Vermont and Massachusetts, maybe even Connecticut, Rhode Island and New York.

When we crossed into New Hampshire, I-95 became the Blue Star Turnpike. It was only fifteen miles long in New Hampshire before crossing into Massachusetts. There was only one toll booth near Hampton NH, and at the nearby rest stop, there was one of the state liquor stores. I bought a couple of New Hampshire beers there.

Traffic went smoothly on I-95 in Massachusetts until we reached Wakefield. The last ten miles to the WTC Renaissance hotel would not be exactly the most pleasant. It was slow going between Woburn, Medford and Charlestown. It got a little better as we passed by TD Gardens and went underground to I-90. The car was parked at the Renaissance and we checked in. However there was some technical issue with our reservations, so we were delayed for a half hour.

My room in the Renaissance hotel was well equipped. It had laminated flooring, a USB outlet for my MP3 player, and a very nice view of the airport, the Waterfront and even the World Trade Center itself.

About 5 PM we took the SL1 bus into town. It went underground from WTC to South Station, then we took the red line to Downtown Crossing and the orange line to State. That was the closest T station to Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall. We found the Durgin Park very easily. We had a table in the upstairs seating area. I ordered the scrod with mashed potatoes and boiled broccoli, and a glass of Sam Adams. The wait staff did not bump into my chair as much as I expected them to. The meal was enjoyable.

We walked to the waterfront and we decided that taking a water taxi to the airport in the morning would be too much trouble, and the SL1 would be a better way.

My family had also wanted to see something that I may not find particularly interesting so they said I could do whatever I wanted the rest of the night, on condition that I join them at 6 AM the next morning to go to the airport. I agreed and then walked to the State station, went two stops on the orange line to North Station, transferred to the green line, and rode it to Lechmere, pronounced as Leechmere. Lechmere was up to the end of May 2020, a loop terminal station for the green line. An extension to College Avenue has started and it may be complete by 2022.

After Lechmere, I took the green line to Park Street and took a red line to Savin Hill. At JFK/UMass there is a branch also to Braintree via Quincy and Wollaston. I did not have time to take the Ashmont/Mattapan trolleycar line, so I saved that for a future visit a few years later. I also went to Braintree at that future visit at that same time.

I returned to South Station and transferred to the SL1 for WTC. I had a small cup of Ben and Jerry's ice cream at the little shop outside the hotel. Then I went up to my room, listened to some music and then went to bed. I had to wake up at 5:30 AM the next morning.

Tomorrow's adventure is taking the SL1 from WTC to the airport, attempting to fly to DFW but getting diverted to Austin's Bergstrom airport but eventually arriving a few hours later than expected. Hope you will join me then.

Westport: The Lay of the Land

The phrase “lay of the land” characterizes a mental map used to keep physical or conceptual geography organized in one’s head. I have a mental model of Westport, a town of 24.2 square miles shaped in a skewed square and found in Fairfield County, Connecticut. The town feels expansive even though it's slightly smaller than each of its neighbors and many of the other towns in the county. Here's a description of the mental model I use for Westport. It helps me, and I hope it helps you, too.

The Natural Dimension

Naturally speaking, Westport has always been the combination of a few landscapes: the rising banks of a clean Connecticut River, a modest glacial plane of lower and leveler topography, sandy or pebbly beaches, wooded wetlands, and a northern stretch of rising sometimes rocky hills. Think of the northwest and northeast corners as high points in town with vantages for looking out across the rest.

Situated as a coastal town on the Long Island Sound, the waterfront sets up a natural backdrop that infuses the vibe of the town. Boating, beach-going, and polar bear swims are all part of the scene.

The coastline itself is both smooth and uneven. It spreads for long smooth or curved stretches in some places but also is made interesting with inlets and projections, a river and several creeks, and a salt marsh or two. Several large islands extend Westport out into the water as well.

The Saugatuck River

After the coast, an immediate feature of note is the Saugatuck River. Large enough to require a towering bridge to carry Interstate Highway 95 and a slightly less towering bridge for the Metro North Rail-line, it is also small enough to be crossed locally by an historic iron-trussed bridge and by a flag-strewn bridge in the center of town. As wide and substantial as it appears at its mouth – where the current flows out between the town’s waterfront country club on one shore and Westport’s Saugatuck Shores and Saugatuck Island neighborhoods on the other – by the time it has tracked north past Saugatuck Center and the center of downtown, it virtually disappears. Here, the several feeder rivers and streams branch off in a variety of directions and disappear into a hilly and woody landscape.

North-South in orientation, think of the river as dividing Westport into east and west sides. The river doesn’t flow through the center of Westport but moreso divides the town at the three-quarter mark. The east side of town stretches farther to the Town of Fairfield line than the west side does in reaching to touch Norwalk.

The Islands

Of the major islands, the first of note is Saugatuck Island mentioned above. It’s reached from town circuitously from a back road that connects Westport to East Norwalk Center. The island isn’t quite a true island as a canal stops just short of severing the island entirely. Though it is an out-of-the-way place to live, the island and the protrusion of land that connects it are populated by dozens of streets filled with bungalows and beachy homes both casual and lavish.

The second island of note is Sherwood Island. Just over 235 acres, it is a state park – Connecticut’s first, in fact. It offers summertime beach amenities, weekend races and walks, a hobbyist air field, and a spot where a groundhog or turkey might be spotted while walking your dog. While central to the town’s coastline, it is cleverly situated at a remove from the rest of town – resulting in its being nearby while the remainder of town is utterly buffered from its visitors.

The Man-Made Dimension

The second dimension of the town is the man made one: the development, the zones, and especially the roads. The roads tell the story of how we all get around. When building a mental map of the roads, you can put the coastline and the river down a few notches in how helpful they are to building a sure sense of one’s bearings for the day-to-day.

The Post Road

For day-to-day mastery of Westport geography, 50% of it comes back to one road: the Post Road. Traversing Westport from east to west, it travels across the whole town lined by offices, shopping centers, supermarkets, condominium communities, and a variety of commercial elements. Everything in Westport is either “north of” or south of” the Post Road.

Building from the Post Road, almost every main north-south artery radiates north-south from here. Two of the most helpful to the mental map are Compo Road and Riverside/Route 33.

Compo Road While Compo Road does not technically bisect town, it figuratively feels that way. The point where it crosses the Post Road feels like a veritable center – a traffic island carries a majestic sentinel, a grand Sycamore, with her spanning crown of dinner plate-sized leaves.

In the Beginning.....

Now it’s December and time for a little family time. Based on our Christmas rotation schedule, we visit the in-laws in Florida. I know life is rough for us [this is the sarcastic font]. Since we now have the Black Dread and don’t feel she would survive a flight in the cargo hold, we chose to drive. Now I (Mama) grew up in a car. I literally spent most of my summers seeing the United States. By the time I was 16, I had been to 47 states. Alaska, Hawaii and Arkansas were missing. The first two make sense and the last, well my Dad couldn’t find a giant ball of yarn or something for us to visit. The Wife is very well traveled but did most of it by plane. Since then her job has led her to drive more, but nothing quite like a trip to Florida from Connecticut. The trip door-to-door is 1411 miles and based on Google maps should take 22 hours and 20 minutes using the December 21sttraffic. Our plan is to drive to Chester, VA, stay overnight and reach our final destination on Saturday, Dec. 22nd.

If your eyebrows lifted at us stopping at Chester, VA, let me explain. First, my job made it challenging for us to leave any earlier than 1 pm. Based on the route we will travel, (going down parts of I-95, through NYC, Jersey, Baltimore/DC area) we didn’t think we could get much further. We also needed to find a hotel which would allow the Black Dread and was close to if not a Supercharger at least some kind of charger. I used both Tesla’s route planner and evtripplanner.com. I played around with several other sites and looked at where the chargepoint chargers are. I really wanted to stop at chargers that were A) very close to the highway B) had reasonable facilities and C) where we would actually really charge Ruby. What I mean by this is I don’t want to drive 10 minutes to charge for 15 minutes. The only way I’m going to do a quick 15-minute charge is if the charger is at a rest area right off the highway and someone has to pee. Taking all these factors in account I determined that our first stop should be in Cranberry NJ at the Molly Pitcher Service Area. Now I should state that I DO have some range anxiety. My Wife doesn’t, but still would like to arrive at the charger with at least 10% remaining. I’m sure we will grow out of this as we get used to having an EV. Lord knows that I will push my fossil fuel guzzler to under 1 gallon. Below is what I came up with. We will see how much we stick to this.

Now some of you may be saying that these are super conservative. I spent multiple hours on this after driving around when the temperatures were in the teens. If you are not aware, the cold has significant impact on battery life. Based on that weekend I was able to calculate that in the cold 1 mile of road distance uses 1.3 miles of battery life. Now since we are leaving on December 21stI expected similar temperatures. In some ways we lucked out. The temperatures were in the high 50’s, BUT it was rainy and extremely windy with a southerly wind at 19 mph, not good for range. Booo.
