WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans view college campuses as far friendlier to liberals than to conservatives when it comes to free speech, with adults across the political spectrum seeing less tolerance for those on the right, according to a new poll.

Overall, 47% of adults say liberals have “a lot” of freedom to express their views on college campuses, while just 20% said the same of conservatives, according to polling from the The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and the University of Chicago Forum for Free Inquiry and Expression.

Republicans perceive a stronger bias on campuses against conservatives, but Democrats see a difference too — about 4 in 10 Democrats say liberals can speak their minds freely on campuses, while about 3 in 10 Democrats say conservatives can do so.

“If you’re a Republican or lean Republican, you’re unabashedly wrong, they shut you down,” said Rhonda Baker, 60, of Goldsboro, North Carolina, who voted for former President Donald Trump and has a son in college. “If they hold a rally, it’s: ‘The MAGA’s coming through.’ It’s: ‘The KKK is coming through.’”

Debates over First Amendment rights have occasionally flared on college campuses in recent years, with conflicts arising over guest speakers who express polarizing views, often from the political right.

Stanford University became a flashpoint this year when students shouted down a conservative judge who was invited to speak. More recently, a conservative Princeton University professor was drowned out while discussing free speech at Washington College, a small school in Maryland.

At the same time, Republican lawmakers in dozens of states have proposed bills aiming to limit public colleges from teaching topics considered divisive or liberal. Just 30% of Americans say states should be able to restrict what professors at state universities teach, the poll found, though support was higher among Republicans.

Overall, Republicans see a clear double standard on college campuses. Just 9% said conservatives can speak their minds, while 58% said liberals have that freedom, according to the polling. They were also slightly less likely than Americans overall to see campuses as respectful and inclusive places for conservatives.

Chris Gauvin, a Republican who has done construction work on campuses, believes conservative voices are stifled. While working at Yale University, he was once stopped by pro-LGBTQ+ activists who asked for his opinion, he said.

“They asked me how I felt, so I figured I’d tell them. I spoke in a normal tone, I didn’t get excited or upset,” said Gauvin, 58, of Manchester, Connecticut. “But it proceeded with 18 to 20 people who were suddenly very irritated and agitated. It just exploded.”

He took a lesson from the experience: “I learned to be very quiet there.”

Republicans in Congress have raised alarms, with a recent House report warning of “the long-standing and pervasive degradation of First Amendment rights” at U.S. colleges. Some in the GOP have called for federal legislation requiring colleges to protect free speech and punish those who infringe on others’ rights.

Nicholas Fleisher, who chairs an academic freedom committee for the American Association of University Professors, said public perception is skewed by the infrequent cases when protesters go too far.

“The reality is that there’s free speech for everyone on college campuses,” said Fleisher, a linguistics professor at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. “In conversations within classrooms, people are free to speak their minds. And they do.”

Officials at PEN America, a free speech group, say most students welcome diverse views. But as the nation has become more politically divided, so have college campuses, said Kristen Shahverdian, senior manager for education at PEN.

“There’s this polarization that just continues to grow and build across our country, and colleges and universities are a part of that ecosystem,” she said.

Morgan Ashford, a Democrat in an online graduate program at Troy University in Alabama, said she thinks people can express themselves freely on campus regardless of politics or skin color. Still, she sees a lack of tolerance for the LGBTQ+ community in her Republican state where the governor has passed anti-LGBTQ legislation.

“I think there have to be guidelines” around hate speech, said Ashford. “Because some people can go overboard.”

When it comes to protesting speakers, most Americans say it should be peaceful. About 8 in 10 say it’s acceptable to engage in peaceful, non-disruptive protest at a campus event, while just 15% say it’s OK to prevent a speaker from communicating with the audience, the poll found.

“If they don’t like it, they can get up and walk out,” said Linda Woodward, 71, a Democrat in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas.

Mike Darlington, a real estate appraiser who votes Republican, said drowning out speakers violates the virtues of a free society.

“It seems to me a very, very selfish attitude that makes students think, ‘If you don’t think the way I do, then your thoughts are unacceptable,’” said Darlington, 58, of Chesterfield County, Virginia.

The protest at Stanford was one of six campus speeches across the U.S. that ended in significant disruption this year, with another 11 last year, according to a database by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, a free speech group.

Those cases, while troubling, are one symptom of a broader problem, said Ilya Shapiro, a conservative legal scholar who was shouted down during a speech last year at the University of California’s law school. He says colleges have drifted away from the classic ideal of academia as a place for free inquiry.

An even bigger problem than speakers being disrupted by protesters is “students and faculty feeling that they can’t be open in their views. They can’t even discuss certain subjects,” said Shapiro, director of constitutional studies at the Manhattan Institute think tank.

About three in five Americans (62%) say that a major purpose of higher education is to support the free exchange and debate of different ideas and values. Even more U.S. adults say college’s main purpose is to teach students specific skills (82%), advance knowledge and ideas (78%) or teach students to be critical thinkers (76%). Also, 66% said a major purpose is to create a respectful and inclusive learning environment.

“I believe it should be solely to prepare you to enter the workforce,” said Gene VanZandt, 40, a Republican who works in shipbuilding in Hampton, Virginia. “I think our colleges have gone too far off the path of what their function was.”

The poll finds that majorities of Americans think students and professors, respectively, should not be allowed to express racist, sexist or anti-LGBTQ views on campus, with slightly more Republicans than Democrats saying those types of views should be allowed. There was slightly more tolerance for students expressing those views than for professors.

About 4 in 10 said students should be permitted to invite academic speakers accused of using offensive speech, with 55% saying they should not. There was a similar split when asked whether professors should be allowed to invite those speakers.

Darlington believes students and professors should be able to discuss controversial topics, but there are limits.

“Over-the-top, overtly racist, hateful stuff — no. You shouldn’t be allowed to do that freely,” he said.

The poll of 1,095 adults was conducted Sept. 7-11, 2023, using a sample drawn from NORC’s probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of sampling error for all respondents is plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The crowd had gathered; each participant hidden behind lace or leather masks and hoods that kept their faces well in shadow. Despite the cloaks and masquerade, most were known to each other. The townsfolk had been there before, watching the rituals, bathing in the blood of the male offering, soaking up the potions Bronwyn brewed from the victim’s love. It was old hat by now, just something that had to be done for the good of the town. A few of the new supplicants still found it shameful, and they kept to the back of the room, skirting the edges and holding their breaths as the sacrificial lambs were manipulated and used up.

A newcomer stood in their midst that night, a petite woman draped in a charcoal cape that hid her bright red hair and porcelain skin. She wore a mask of intricate sapphire lace that matched her sparkling gown, and walked through the crowd with the air of royalty. Whispers erupted in wake as she moved to the center of the congregation and approached the altar.

Bronwyn met her there, smiling in greeting and nodding. “So glad you could join us.”

The stranger smiled and thanked her host, a thick accent rippling through the air. “The pleasure is all mine, Bronwyn. Very excited to see what you’ve been working on.”

Pride swelled in Bronwyn’s chest and she tried to hide it behind a tight smile. “Then let’s begin, shall we?”

She turned and spread her arms wide, welcoming her followers.

“Tonight, we have an extraordinary surprise. As many of you came to realize, two hunters stumbled into our town recently, and I was fortunate enough to capture their… attention. Now, the very thing they came to destroy, will destroy them!”

A low, rumbling laugh filled the room and the candles flickered as the new waves of air struck the flames.

Bronwyn held up a hand and the crowd silenced immediately.

“Beautiful though this couple is, they are even more special. Not only are they deeply in love, one of them… is famous.” Her eyes widened beneath the mask and the room rang with anticipation. “Allow me to introduce our honored guest tonight… Dean Winchester.”

With a snap of her fingers, Dean moved into the room. He walked as if in sleep, his body mobile but his mind empty. Naked and shining with a glaze of sweat, he stood in the center of the room, his bare toes edging the runes carved into the ancient stone. They formed a circle around him, seven feet around, and he stopped at the edge, locked by the magic and Bronwyn’s command.

The audience exclaimed at his beauty and the novelty of having such a prolific hunter in their circle. The sapphire witch took a step back, fading into the throng, watching, hiding.

Bronwyn grinned and continued with a wave of her hand “Let us not forget his lover and our vessel… Y/N Y/L/N.”

Y/N entered just as Dean had, naked and entranced. She stood next to him, toes touching the arch of the magical circle, waiting, empty.

With everything in place, Bronwyn began the first part of the spell. She worked at the altar, mixing the tincture of her own design and anointing Dean and Y/N in turn. The oils ran down the faces, dripped onto their chests, puddled at their feet. The scents of damiana and rose filled the room, and their bodies weakened, growing more pliant with each word Bronwyn spoke.

“Esse simul!”

The followers replied, chanting the spell along with Bronwyn and the magic took hold. Dean turned to Y/N and laid his hands on her shoulders, spinning her to him. They kissed, heavy and wet. His hands dragged down her body, her fingers clawed at the nape of his neck.

With more than a dozen pairs of eyes upon them, they fell to the ground within the circle, biting and licking, scratching and pinching. She rolled onto her back and rode him hard, her arousal in control of everything.

He groaned beneath her, body crushed into the stone. His eyes were wide and fixed on her flesh but he was unable to wake, too trapped inside himself.

The room roared with cheers when he came and the essence of his orgasm was trapped in another jar, locked away to be used for the main spell.

Two hours went by and their bodies were tired. Their backs were scraped by the stone, their sex aching and raw from constant use, lips swollen and bright ruby red. Close to breaking down, they lay in each other’s arms, driven to keep touching by the spell until one more orgasm was ripped from Y/N’s throbbing cunt.

Satisfied so far, Bronwyn clapped her hands and addressed the room. Y/N and Dean went still, afforded a small break to catch their breaths.

“Please help yourselves to supper upstairs while we give our guests a rest. The altar must be prepared for the second part.” Her gaze swept over the hooded company and she pointed at the steps. “I shall be with you shortly.”

As the coven ascended the stairs up into the main house, Bronwyn tended to Y/N and Dean. She got them up from the cold floor and let them sleep in each other’s arms against the wall.

She cleared the altar and set up a new cloth of plush purple velvet and a small pillow for Y/N’s head. A sharp knife of pure silver laid at the head of the altar and she blessed each piece as she laid it in place.

Finally, she took her leave, following her supplicants up the long stairs and shutting the door behind her.

The sapphire witch slid out of the darkness beneath the staircase and rushed to Dean and Y/N. She slapped his cheek hard, mostly for fun, as she knew he was too far gone to react. She eyed him for a long moment before speaking, taking in the view of his nakedness and shrugging.

“Not bad…” She smirked. “But I’ve seen bigger.”

Moving closer to Y/N, she laid her hands on both their foreheads and bent between them to whisper. “Surgere.”

Y/N gasped as a jolt of energy struck her heart and she sprang up, nearly knocking their savior over.

“Holy fucking motherfucking hell!”

The witch shushed her with a harsh hiss and a finger over her lips. “Be quiet!”

Dean shuddered as he woke and shook himself, too fatigued to yet stand. “Fuck. Y/N?”

She went back to him, crouching down to check on him before jumping back and into a fighting stance, weary of their helper.

“Who are you!”

Dean waved at her to lower her voice and back down. “Shh. Friendly,” he croaked.

The witch dropped her hood and tugged the mask from her eyes. Rowena smiled flirtatiously. “You recognized me behind all this?”

Dean rolled his eyes and sat up. His muscles were aching, bones near to breaking. “Only you would wear a glittery get up like that.” He stood, wincing at the pain and quickly covered his manhood. “What the hell?”

Rowena looked down at his hand and smirked. “Don’t worry. I took a wee peek before I woke you up.”

Y/N gagged. “OK. What the hell is going on?” She tried to hide herself behind Dean, but it was no use, so she slung an arm over her chest. “And, thank you, Rowena. Sorry I tried to punch you.”

Rowena batted incredibly painted lashes and shrugged her cloak off, handing it to a grateful Y/N. “Don’t worry about all that. Let’s just get you out of here before they come back.” She turned towards the steps and the tunnel carved behind.

Dean grabbed her shoulder. “Wait. We can’t just leave. We gotta-”

“Have to what, Dean?” Rowena snapped. “In case you’ve not noticed, you’re naked as a newborn babe, unarmed and half dead. You need to get out of here before Bronwyn and her folk come back for part two.”

Y/N shivered. “Part two?”

“Aye. First, they wring every possible ounce of orgasmic magic from your bodies, and then-” She paused and looked over her shoulder at the altar.

Y/N swallowed hard. “They sacrifice us.”

“No.” Rowena shook her head solemnly. “Much worse.”

Dean balked. “Worse?”

“Well, you, they sacrifice. But not after they have Y/N carve you up. And… well-”

Y/N leaned in, wide eyed and concerned. “And?”

Rowena sighed. “Dean must impregnate you before they drain him and dispose of his corpse. Then they keep you, magically accelerate the gestation, and… eventually… kill you and the fetus after stealing the birth magic.”

Dean and Y/N stood stark still, staring at Rowena with jaws too tight with nerves to actually drop.

Y/N trembled inside. “What!”

“It’s very complicated, very dark magic.”

Dean blinked himself back into the moment. “Sex magic?”

Rowena nodded. “Aye. Usually, it’s not used to this extent, and normally no one dies, but Bronwyn is a truly evil bitch.”

Dean laughed. “Witch,” he corrected.

“Bitch,” she asserted.

Y/N shrugged in agreement and stepped away from the other two. She grabbed the silver blade from the altar and chucked it against the wall as anger swelled in her gut. “Ain’t nobody getting me pregnant,” she hissed, ripping the cloth from the stone and tossing it at Dean. “Cover that dick and let’s get out of here. We need about two cases of Gatorade and some red meat.”

Still quite dazed, Dean wrapped the cloth around his waist and hobbled towards her. “Burgers?” His stomach growled.

Y/N sighed and pressed her palm to his cheek. “Of course, baby.”

Annoyed, Rowena clicked her tongue and tapped a jewel-studded shoe. “Shall we hurry please?”

The tunnel was long and short, and only Rowena made it through without ducking. She lead them down into the darkness and back out the other side, all the while, answering their questions in careful whispers.

“How many of them were there?” Dean asked, nearly cracking his head on the roughly carved ceiling for the tenth time.

“I counted fourteen aside from myself.”

“Including Bronwyn?”

“Aye.”

Y/N groaned. “That’s a lot. Recognize anyone?”

Rowena tripped over a rock and huffed. “A few. That horrible John Willard was one of them. Tried to sneak his hand under my cloak.”

“The sheriff.” Y/N grit her teeth. “Yeah. Figures. Handsy dick…”

Finally, they hit moonlight and breathed fresh air for the first time in days. The Impala was still stashed in the woods half a mile down the road and they ran to it as fast as their exhausted legs could carry them.

Dean’s naked ass squeaked on the leather as he slid into the driver’s seat and revved the engine.

Rowena hung back, unsure of what to do.

Y/N yanked her door open and paused, squinting at Rowena. “What’re you doing? Come on.”

“I have to go back in or they’ll know it was me who helped you escape.” The taste of fear bathed her tongue and she cringed, hating it.

“No.” Y/N opened the back door and tugged on Rowena’s arm. “You can’t go back in there. If they know we’re gone, they already know it was you. You’d be walking into an execution.”

Dean threw his arm over the seat and looked back at them. “Yeah. Besides, we still need you. Now, get in. I’m freezing.”

Sequins sparkled in the moonlight as she climbed into the backseat.

Damon & Naomi - Best Video Film & Cultural Center, Hamden, Connecticut, May 12, 2023

Following up Powers / Rolin, we're keeping it duo-y this week with a fabulous tape of Damon & Naomi in the "almost pretty" state of Connecticut earlier this year. D&N were playing Best Video Film & Cultural Center, a nonprofit venue/community gathering space that honestly seems like one of the coolest places in the entire Nutmeg State. "I don't know why we haven't played a video store before," Damon marvels, later noting the unexpectedly excellent acoustics that a wall of VHS tapes provides.

And yeah, he and Naomi are wonderful as always, playing several tunes from their latest/greatest A Sky Record along with some welcome dips into their rich back catalog, which now stretches back over 30 years. I especially enjoy the songs in which Naomi picks up her bass — such a unique and absorbing sound. In the first issue of the highly recommended new zine Head Voice (more on that soon), Ben Chasny and Elisa Ambrogio go deep with Yang about that sound. "[I]f you play really low all the time, the club starts to vibrate and everything falls off the shelves. It's like a seismic sound, all those super low notes. But I think I really started playing higher up because I always write the bass lines by singing them, so that is where my voice is. I also just thought it sounded pretty and it cut through."

The laid-back setting also encourages banter, so we get to hear about D&N's newly adopted cat, misadventures on the Merritt Parkway and Tim Buckley's appearance on The Monkees. And hey, there's even a majestic rendition of the old Galaxie 500 chestnut "Another Day" ... though I'm also going to suggest you check out the radical version of this song from around the same time with Meg Baird and Charlie Saufley. (Oh and then maybe you can dig the quartet's radical Popol Vuh cover???)

Kicking Up Dust - Part 1

A/N: Takes place after 'Falcon and the Winter Soldier' with one major exception - Steve Rogers is not dead. He stepped down. This is in line with my Crossroads story. There will also be a parallel Steve story coming.

ONE

New York City felt busier and more crowded than you’d ever known it. Perhaps the construction sites on every other block and the mass of detours made it worse. People walked shoulder to shoulder on the sidewalks, which was better than stand still of the cars. No matter the reason, you weren’t particularly happy to be back.

The lobby of Stark Tower underwent renovations, too. A subdue black granite memorial stood in the center of the mass entry hall to those lost in the battle with Thanos. You paused briefly, to look it over. Easily fifteen feet tall, the monolith had gravitas and restraint. It was nothing like some of the flashy tributes elsewhere else.

Also new to the lobby was a large glass and steel sign for the Integration Initiative. The foundation created by Pepper Potts and Steve Rogers to help people returning from the blip. They worked with the various governments and organizations unhappy with the Global Repatriotization Council. The organization also issued grants to organizations that help individuals rebuild their lives, relocation and rehoming, new career training, and even mental health services.

“May I help you?” A young man behind a marble reception desk smiled.

“Yes,” You returned the smile and handed him a business card. “I have a 10 o’clock with Ms. Potts.”

“Thank you.” He checked the computer and pulled out a visitor badge. “Kimberly will be down in just a moment to take you up. Please wear this where it’s visible at all times.”

“Thanks.” You stepped to the waiting area. Before long a woman called your name. She introduced herself before leading you to the elevators. On the seventy-second floor, you were taken to a huge office. Pepper called your name before you even entered. “Hi!” You met her halfway across the office and welcomed her hug.

“How have you been?” She motioned for you to sit.

“Busy. How about you?”

“Same. It’s weird being back here, but it’s what makes the most sense right now with all the work we’re doing. Plus, it allows Morgan to be here with me.”

“That’s good. I love the video you sent me of her cooking.” You chuckled.

“She’s got Tony’s mad-scientist thing going on when she’s cooking, doesn’t she?” Pepper grinned. “What’s the cause of the visit?”

You’d known Pepper for years, having provided her with antiques and art for Stark’s properties. Since the snap, though, you’d taken on a new endeavor. Combining your love of restoring old things, and your love of decorating, you started a company that restores large old homes and reapportions them for multi-family dwellings for those needing to reestablish their lives. It was work helped with grants from the Pepper’s company.

“I found something that I think is important.” You pulled out an old leather-bound journal and handed it to her. You saw her eyebrow rise as she read the owners name and a date written in beautiful script on the first page. “There’s a ton more.”

“Wait right there.” She got up and left the room.

A few minutes later she returned. On her heels walked Steve Rogers, reading the journal. You’d never met him in person, but the sight of him in jeans and sweater was new. So was the neatly trimmed beard. He looked, normal, relaxed even.

Pepper introduced you. Steve took your hand and lowered himself into the chair beside you. Held the journal, reverently. “Where did you find this?”

“A house in Connecticut, outside Danbury. It’s an old Victorian I just purchased and started to clear out for renovation. It’s been boarded up for 23 years. I did a little homework, and the last owner was listed as Wilbur Lewis. He inherited it 83 years ago. But I don’t think he’s the one who lived there, or if he did it wasn’t for long. I think his wife’s younger brother, Archie Peterson lived there, along with his wife.”

“Rebecca Barnes...”

Bucky ignored the phone again. He could hear it ringing where it lay buried in the pocket of yesterday’s jeans, somewhere in the corner of his bedroom. It’s been going off all morning, but he didn’t want to talk to anyone. It’d been a bad night.

His nightmares were getting better. They weren’t as frequent since the whole business with Sam. Spending some time with his family down south and having a decent dose of normalcy helped. Still, they occasionally snuck up and bit him in the ass. When it happened, he was not fit for civilized company.

When the knock came at his door and he heard Steve’s even voice call his name, Bucky grimaced. It had been Steve calling. Now he felt guilty, too.

“Yeah, coming.” Standing, he straightened his sweatpants. He kicked the blankets and pillow into the corner, as he snagged a discarded tee shirt to put on. He opened the door without a greeting. Only old habits kept the surprise from his face. Steve wasn’t alone. He should have heard more than one set of footsteps. He really was distracted.

“Buck.”

“Steve.”

“You gonna invite us in or are we just going to stand in the hall?” Steve smirked.

“Oh, sorry.” Bucky stepped back, suddenly self-conscious of his barren apartment. The wood floor and high ceilings made the place appealing. However, he never could bring himself to do the normal things; to buy furniture or make it a home.

Steve bought the bed and had it delivered, even though Bucky rarely slept on it. Sam showed up with beer and the television one night. He found a little table and lamp that just needed a few screws tightened out by the dumpster. The blankets and pillow got picked up a corner store. Bucky didn’t even have the necessities by most people’s standards.

“Bucky,” Steve leaned against the wall by the door. “I want you to meet Y/N. She’s a friend of Pepper’s and does work under one of the Initiative’s grants. She found something you need to see.”

“Hi.” He shook your hand, scowling.

You got the distinct feeling this man did not like surprises. He looked so hard, so tired. The person standing before you bore no resemblance to the man described in Rebecca’s writings. “Sergeant Barnes,” You began.

“Bucky’s fine.” He frowned.

Nodding, you continued. “Over the last few years I’ve been remodeling large estates, converting them into homes for people who need a new start. A few weeks ago, I purchased a 7000 square foot Victorian estate that has been boarded up for more than twenty years. Thankfully, it’s a stone clad beauty and it stayed mostly sealed up.” You took a deep breath, seeing his growing impatience.

“I found a lot inside. Everything, actually. It’s just like the former owners left it before they died. I think it was,” You shook your head. “No, um, I know it was, your sister and her husband.”

His jaw went slack. With wide eyes he turned to Steve.

“I told you they fell off the radar in the fifties.” Steve shrugged “We found out that Becca’s husband testified against those gangsters, and they burned down the shop. After that there was nothing. No trace. Looks like they moved to Connecticut.”

“You’re serious?” Bucky breathed.

“Yeah.” You handed him the journal you brought. “I flagged a page there. It’s a few days after her wedding. She mentions you specifically. She got married on June 9, 1951.”

Bucky opened the book gently and read. After a moment, he covered his mouth with his left hand and looked up at Steve with so much emotion that you marveled that such a face could be so hard just moments before.

“Yeah.” Steve chuckled and squeezed his friend’s shoulder. “There’s more. She said there’s a library of stuff. A whole house of stuff to go through.”

“I feel strange going through it all by myself, and it’s way too much to just pack up.” You interjected. “I get that we don’t know each other, but we have friends in common. Latimore’s icon “Refugees: La Sagrada Familia,” in which the flight to Egypt is interpreted as Latinx immigrants crossing the desert, adorns the cover of Pope Francis’s book “A Stranger and You Welcomed Me.” Latimore has also created a diverse array of icons of unexpected saints such as poet Mary Oliver, congressman John Lewis, and environmentalist John Muir.

This intensive four-day retreat includes icon creation with Latimore, who will discuss his process and provide instruction on technique.
