Hello
Do you have recommendations for collection of short stories?
Yes, here are few I've enjoyed:
Landour Bazaar by Ruskin Bond: all stories from, set in, and inspired by his time in Landour near Mussoorie. They're so lovely and so kind
Also, while we're on Ruskin Bond: Time Stops at Shamli, The Night Train at Deoli, and Season of Ghosts
Dark Satellites by Clemens Meyer: about people living on the margins in Germany, particularly in what used to be East Germany
The Dangers of Smoking Bed by Mariana Enriquez: spooky, gothic horror from Argentina. All stories are set in Buenos Aires, all are centered on women, and all of them definitely are creepy
No Presents Please by Jayant Kaikini: fiction on living in Mumbai, especially what the migrant, working-class encounter with the city is like
Antarctica by Claire Keegan: her debut collection, and a good place to start with Keegan. The language is tight but so, so clinical, and the stories have so much to unpack
Fragile Things by Neil Gaiman: partly fantasy, partly gothic, partly urban legend, partly just funny. It's a really varied collection and one I had fun reading because of the expanse of it
In A Free State by V. S. Naipaul: about colonial and postcolonial exiles and migrants; what rootlessness does or means on a daily basis; very moving

I came to you
Lord, because of
the fucking reticence
of this world
no, not the world, not reticence, oh
Lord Come
Lord Come
We were sad on the ground
Lord Come
We were sad on the ground.
That’s Jean Valentine for you, in all her pithiness, a sublime accrual of minimalism, the poem amplifying the deafening silence – etymologically derived from the Latin reticentia "silence, a keeping silent";  however, we are not here to establish how a myriad-mouthed curiosity of a seemingly simple word snowballed into a critique of one of the most poignant films I’ve watched lately.
And yet Thomas Stuber’s film ‘In the Aisles’ (In den Gängen), takes a cue from the word ‘reticence’ and subverts it with muted panache. I will not give anything away, as far as the plot goes, the screenplay is adapted by a short story from Clemens Meyer, but one must exalt, applaud Peter Matjasko’s cinematography and Stuber’s vision to paint us a film, rooted in German romanticism and philosophically laced with a quiet stoicism. Stuber choreographs his film mostly away from the ‘repoussoir’ and towards the ‘Rückenfigur’ figure, emblematic of Caspar David Friedrich, giving the viewers a proxy view. Stuber’s cinematic idiom is one of subtlety and restraint, where intimacies are built around blue-collared workers working with forklifts; not with the pace of an anticipated frenetic brushstroke but a languid waltz, a Chopin nocturne at an andante tempo. Matjasko’s camera lingers coquettishly on Hüller and Rogowski; vignettes provisionally captured that brings wider allusions to play; a semi-erotic languorous seduction with a nod to Wang Kar Wai in its affinity for transience and elegant, ruptured passion felt, but not consummated. The diegetic sound of the forklifts frolicking on the shopfloor, to be interrupted by Suite No. 3 in D by Bach is a touch of brilliance.
The reticence, the silence is representative of a larger societal malaise and while each worker’s individual strife is salient, even cruel, the film offers redemption and hope by way of a tender camaraderie, little acts of kindnesses; a collective celebration of the human spirit. Multiple motifs ricochet between scenes to highlight a collegial tenderness, that shimmers, then builds to a crescendo, where the dappled translucence gives way to a solemn covenant between people. One scene, in particular, is poignant, where on Christmas Eve, all the workers are feasting on expired sausages and beer, a surreptitious gift stolen from the dust bins: a secret shared by all the workers as kin, as family united by their hunger, and their gratitude for small mercies. I had tears in my eyes at the profundity of that one scene.                                                            *** ‘Everything conspires to make us forget the socially constructed, and hence arbitrary and artificial, character of investment in the economic game and its stakes: the ultimate reasons for commitment to work, a career or the pursuit of profit in fact lie beyond or outside calculation and calculating reason in the obscure depths of a historically constituted habitus, which means that, in normal circumstances, one gets up every day to go to work without deliberating on the issue, as indeed one did yesterday and will do tomorrow.’ – Pierre Bourdieu Another significantly important prism to deconstruct the film, with reasonable temerity would be a brief social commentary invoking Bourdieu’s cultural capital in three forms: embodied, objectified, and institutionalised. The anxiety, the permanent stress of insecurity and uncertainty is visible, albeit in a concealed manner, where the precariousness of the worker’s situation reflects in the fastidiousness with which they go about their jobs; the lather-rinse-repeatedness of their 15-minutes break to alleviate the tedium of their mundane jobs. Mastering the forklift becomes both a credible threat, and acquired competence for Rogowski. The entire squad waits with bated breath, as he clears his test and acquires his forklift licence, the crowd bursting into a rapturous applause on successful completion. Immensely moved by the film, I came away thinking of another poem by Komunyakaa:
My father could only sign  His name, but he'd look at blueprints  & say how many bricks  Formed each wall. This man,  Who stole roses & hyacinth  For his yard, would stand there  With eyes closed & fists balled,  Labouring over a simple word, almost  Redeemed by what he tried to say.

THE BEAST WITHIN (1982) – Episode 249 – Decades Of Horror 1980s
“Oral sodomy?… Well, that’s why it’s a small town… Yeah, we’ll look into it. Thank you for calling.” Say what? Join your faithful Grue Crew – Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, Crystal Cleveland, and Jeff Mohr – as they confront the over-the-top effects, excellent acting, and confusing story in The Beast Within (1982).

A young woman gets raped by a mysterious man-creature, and years later her son begins a horrific transformation into a similar beast.
  Directed by: Philippe Mora

Produced by: Harvey Bernhard, Gabriel Katzka

In the early 1980s, producer Harvey (The Goonies, The Lost Boys) Bernhard purchases an unfinished novel by Edward Levy and hires Tom (Fright Night, Child’s Play) Holland – his first feature film credit – to write the screenplay (from scratch). He follows this up by scooping up Philippe Mora, the talent behind Communion and The Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf (cue blank stare), to direct. The result is the often maligned creature feature The Beast Within (1982) featuring Paul Clemens, Ronny Cox, Bibi Besch, Don Gordon, R. G. Armstrong, Katherine Moffat, L. Q. Jones, Logan Ramsey, Luke Askeew, John Dennis Johnston, Meschach Taylor, and Ron Soble. While the make-up effects by  Thomas R. Burman (Prophecy, Altered States) are collectively praised, the premise received far more disparagingly negative critiques. Now it is time for the Grue Crew to settle the score. Is it a schlocky disaster or a grotesque cult-classic?
At the time of this writing, The Beast Within is available for streaming from Tubi and as PPV from Amazon and AppleTV. The film is available on physical media in Blu-ray format from SHOUT! Factory.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Grue Crew for their sestercentennial episode (that’s 250th, Grue Belivers), will be Gremlins (1984), with guest host Ralph Miller who is one of the effects artists who worked on the film as part of Chris Walas’ crew. This should be fun!
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans – so leave them a message or comment on the Gruesome Magazine Youtube channel, on the Gruesome Magazine website, or email the Decades of Horror 1980s podcast hosts at [email protected].

Januar 1966 in FC Carl Zeiss Jena. Klaus Schlappner, Hans Meyer, Eberhard Vogel, Heiko Weber mit Co Marco Kämpfe, Frank Neubarth, Valdas Ivanauskas, Henning Bürger, René van Eck, Carsten Linke, Jürgen Raab, Petrik Sander, Andreas Zimmermann, Patrick van Kets, Volkan Uluc,Rico schmitt, René Klingbeil und Kenny Verhoene,

Dissidentisches Kopfkino

hello! hope you're well.
what are your absolute favorite short stories?
(apologies if this has been asked before!)
hello! this took some time to put together because as it turns out, i remember stories extensively, but almost never their name. where i could, i've also linked the stories.
other people by neil gaiman
the funeral by ruskin bond
kids who come back by mariana enriquez
late arrival by clemens meyer
voting at barlowganj by ruskin bond
quare name for a boy by claire keegan
this marathi story by g. a. kulkarni called सोडवण, which loosely translates to solution, but more in the sense of closure and finality
this is what i could remember and put together with very crude yet extensive googling
