The 3D film boom after Avatar is weird to think about bc it was always discussed in apocalyptic tones at the time, and its downfall was incredibly obvious from the start. Critics were debating if Hollywood would force 3D on all films at the same time 3D advocates were debating if shoddy post-Avatar cash-ins would doom 3D movies; and the latter turned out to be correct
It was obvious since the standard bearer for the boom, Clash of the Titans, which invited direct Avatar comparisons for starring the same guy, and for very openly having a rushed 3D conversion done after Avatar's success (it came out four months later). Reviews all said rushed films made 3D when they weren't designed for 3D would poison the well and grind down audience enthusiasm for 3D, and...it did, in a couple years
Really 3D movies are on a clear cycle. They had a moment in the 1950s, as producers sought gimmicks to compete with TV, and then faded. There was a boom in the early 1980s. And then a boom in the early 2010s. What's weird is that these booms are all about two years: 1952 through 1954, 1981 through 1983, 2010 through 2012 (which is when a noticeable decline/backlash began, even if they kept releasing 'em for longer). They even happened about the same length of time from the last boom
Anyway seems weird in retrospect to be afraid that a trend that had burnt itself out twice already was due to take over cinema but I'm sure they'll be everywhere in 2039

Luke George Evans was born on Easter Sunday, 15 April 1979, in Pontypool, and brought up in Aberbargoed, the only child of Yvonne and David Evans. He was raised as a Jehovah's Witness, though he left the religion when he was 16 and left school at the same time.
At age 17, he moved to Cardiff, where he studied with singing coach Louise Ryan. In 1997, he won a scholarship to London Studio Centre, then in Kings Cross, London. He graduated in 2000.
He is a Welsh 🏴 actor and singer. He began his career on the stage, and performed in London's West End productions of Rent, Miss Saigon, and Piaf before making his film breakthrough in the Clash of the Titans 2010 remake. Following his debut, Evans was cast in the action and thriller films Immortals (2011), The Raven (2012), and the re-imagined The Three Musketeers (2011).
In 2013, Evans starred as the antagonist Owen Shaw in Fast & Furious 6, and also played Bard the Bowman in Peter Jackson's three-part adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit.
Evans also portrayed the vampire Dracula in the character's 2014 film origin story Dracula Untold.
Evans then portrayed Gaston in Disney's live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast (2017), psychologist William Moulton Marston in the biographical drama Professor Marston and the Wonder Women (2017), and the Coachman in Disney's live-action remake of Pinocchio (2022). He released his debut album, At Last, on 22 November 2019. In 2020, he starred in a three-part miniseries The Pembrokeshire Murders. In 2021, he had a main role in the Hulu drama miniseries Nine Perfect Strangers. He then starred in the black ops military series Echo 3 (2022).

Being on the spectrum I find something strangely comforting about rewatching a lot of generic fantasy movies - when I use the term generic it’s not an insult, just an observation. Seventh Son, The Last Witch Hunter, Clash of the Titans (2010), Van Helsing, I, Frankenstein, Hellboy 1 & 2, The Mummy, Priest, all movies I can put on in the background late at night and drift off to without so much as a shrug.
Something about the cookie cutter protagonist who‘s usually some combination of brave/funny/smart/tough/relatable with a tragic/sad/melancholy/irritating/stressful backstory facing off against a series of CGI beasties and an evil sorcerer/conqueror/English person with an axe to grind is calmly reassuring, like walking an old route from your childhood and knowing there’s nothing there to catch you off guard, because even if they add a new postbox or a gate is painted differently it’s still the same path as always.
Those movies and ones like them aren’t explicitly bad, and in fact some like The Mummy and Van Helsing are great, but they don’t stray much if at all from the good old Heroes Journey structure (big ups to my boy Joey C) and I honestly love them for it.
They’re the film equivalent of knowing you should try and cook a nice, healthy, tasty new meal and try to expand your appetite a little all while you fix yourself a simple mac and cheese, because despite what they say familiarity breeds comfort as much as contempt.
More orc thoughts to come, but for now I must slumber to the sounds of studio execs churning out swords and sorcery for the masses - farewell brethren

Most of these are not the most controversial choices, and many barely qualify as films. To be a 1 out of 10 you either have to be obviously incompetent in every possible regard (Manos, The Room, most of the other low-budget horror trash here) or else notable and unique in your atrociousness. Digimon: The Movie is a movie that is bad in a way no other movie has ever been; there's almost something admirable in how fundamentally fucked the film is in every conceivable way, especially considering the movie is pieced together from bits of actual movies that are, if not masterpieces, significantly better than this Frankenstein thing. Then there's the class of films that are completely full of themselves despite being pretty terrible (Hannibal, Rubber, Only Lovers Left Alive), where any shred of competent filmmaking is tanked by the complete tonal mismatch.
I have 143 2/10s, so I won't list all of them (many are low-budget and/or straight-to-DVD horror films), but here are a few honorable mentions among movies people may have actually seen or heard of:

Clash of the Titans
This 2010 film is a remake of the original 1981 movie and is loosely based off of the myth of Perseus. The movie follows main character ,Perseus, who is the son of Zeus making him a demigod and after seeing his own family die at the hands of Hades, he vows to get his revenge. Perseus then sets off on a daring quest to stop Hades from releasing the kraken and setting the world into chaos but before he can do that he needs to obtain the head of Medusa and the Olympian sword. He then goes back to Argos on a Pegasus and finds out Hades had manipulated the other gods into realising the Kraken. He ends up defeating the Kraken by using Medusa's head to petrify it and Zeus ends up forcing Hades back into the underworld.
The kraken
The depiction of the Kraken in this movie is quite different to what I had imagined as this one doesn't really have many squid elements to it. To me, it looks more inspired by a lizard or dinosaur (like Godzilla) than a giant squid. None the less its an interesting take on a monster featured in Greek mythology.
Medusa
Another creature to feature in the movie is Medusa. In the film, she is completely computer generated and her design is similar to how she's portrayed in other pieces of media. I quite like how her snake lower half blends into her upper body and the scale texture continues on her body instead of just cutting off which could make the design jaring.

Clash of the Titans 2010 Action/Adventure film.
Perseus, the demigod son of mighty Zeus, the king of the gods, vows to take his revenge on Hades, the terrifying ruler of the Underworld, when he sees his mortal family perish. As the race of men summons up the courage to rebel against the gods of Olympus, the doomed city of Argos becomes a battlefield, as Hades threatens to unleash the legendary sea-monster, Kraken, unless the fair Princess Andromeda willingly offers herself as a sacrifice. Now, having nothing more to lose, Perseus embarks on a daring quest to stop the forces of evil before Hades plunges the world into chaos and darkness. But, to survive the relentless onslaught of demons and terrible adversaries, Perseus must first embrace his destiny.
Obviously this Kraken is CGI when re-released in 2010, but the original movie in 1981, the Kraken was a stop motion animated character.
I actually like the stop motion Kraken better, the detail is really good on the model. CGI was very limited still.

Eddie Murphy plays a nerd, an obese woman, and an Asian character, it's painfully unfunny.
116. Due Date. 1/5.
Robert Downey Jr and Zach Galifianakis are terrible people with terrible chemistry in this unfunny 2010 comedy.
115. Winnie The Pooh: Blood and Honey. 1/5.
Besides some decent gore, there's nothing this movie has going on.
114. Clash Of The Titans. 1/5.
Another despairing entry from 2010 enters the fray as Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes fail as portrayals of Zeus and Hades on every level.

Arguably in the so bad its good territory, but it annoyed me still.

I'm not into D&D, the game, but the movie was decent.

Patrick Wilson was better in this than in Conjuring three. Wild.
66. The Last Voyage of the Demeter. 3/5.
It has its moments, but a vampire picking off shipmates drags too much, surprisingly.

This movie is why I don't fuck with the Catholic Church and why I make fun of them.

Classic movie involving an unreliable narrator trope, but I have a hard time feeling movies that came out before 1970.

The movie sendoff for the show, The Last Kingdom, is better than the show's last three seasons.

It has some nice fight choreography, but Jackie Chan has a better kung fu flick.

Lovely animation and a fun take on the Mario franchise in spite of underwhelming voice performances from some, but not all.

The first one set a pretty high bar to top in its franchise.

It's a good time, but there are opportunities not taken here that infuriate me.

If it was like ten minutes longer, it would be at my number one.
Guardians of The Galaxy Volume 3. 4.5/5. I almost cried over a CGI raccoon, you bet your ass its my movie of the year.

I re-watched Clash Of The Titans (1981)
In 2010 they made an unremarkable, unmemorable remake of this film, full of bland CGI effects. Fuck that movie. Here's the original 1981 version.
Perseus, son of Zeus and a mortal woman, must defeat mythical monsters and the satyr Calibos in order to marry his beloved Andromeda.
Ray Harryhausen's stop motion special effects are an endlessly interesting piece of talent and film history. Dated in some respects, but full of the charm and wonderment that fantasy cinema is all about. That's why, when you ask me why I prefer the old version of this film to the newer soulless CGI laden trash heap, the answer is simply, because I like film not budgets and technology.
The 1981 version of Clash Of The Titans is the last flicker of an era of films, most of which involved Ray Harryhausen's effects. Films about classical myths and fables, Gods and Goddesses, a hero's journey and lots of claymation monsters. The best of these films are usually considered to be The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad and Jason and the Argonauts. The former coming out in 1958 and the latter in 1963. That means Clash of the Titans is, on average, twenty years older than both films. But, despite it's '81 release, Titans has more in common with those older films than anything made in its era. Making it dated in style.
It's actually beautiful to see stop motion so heavily used in the 1980's. It was certainly still used in films at the time, but not in the heavy way it is here. What's so fantastic to me about it's use here, is that it still works so well. Yes, it's not all perfect and it's obviously fake, but I'd argue it's just somehow more magical than CGI is ever going to be. It's incredibly human and beautifully flawed.
It's 2023 and we're all still so glad to see a director of any film use practical effects over CGI, because seeing the work that went into something and the winking trickery on screen is part of the fun.
(I wanna be clear that CGI does have its place and that I do see it as an artform, so don't come at me lol. But, it's overuse over every other time tested style, is ruining filmmaking a bit.)
Clash of the Titans isn't perfect. You could blame the original myth for that. Greek and Roman mythology isn't exactly deeply written and is more about life lessons and spectacle than character growth or development. But, this fact doesn't really distract from my ability to enjoy this movie. I'm here for the pompous stage style acting, the story or heroes and monsters, those fun special effects. I'm here because I love Ray Harryhausen's work and believe he should be celebrated for what he gave to cinema. I'm here because I love movies.
I honestly don't know how you could not like this one, unless you really hate cheesy fun movies.
There's a really great cast, fine direction, some interesting sets and shots, good pacing, Maggie Smith looking pretty hot, etc...
Watch this with your kids, and if your kids don't like it, get new kids.

For Clash of the Titans 2010 being a 2010 film the obvious cgi isn't too terrible, I mean it's not great but like not horrendous to look at.
