Women are the standard. Women are transforming institutions into something new.
Scholar, activist and child welfare advocate Cindy Blackstock figures academia needs to hire “a lot more people who are willing to get into trouble.”
“Academia and activism should co-exist,” says Dr. Blackstock, a professor in McGill University’s school of social work. “Academic freedom provides us with a space to stand in the wings of discrimination in a way that’s not available to other people.”
“We’re in a very privileged space to do this kind of activism,” Dr. Blackstock points out. She urges academics to move away from the “usual, antiquated notions of knowledge-transfer,” such as presenting a poster or giving a talk at a conference. She says that work is important, but it’s not enough.
“Don’t just publish another paper; eighty-five per cent of journal articles don’t get read,” she estimates. “Let’s do something and express ourselves in ways people can actually understand. And listen to the lived experience, get behind the community.”

Almost a month after Good Morning America anchors T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach made headlines for getting cozy throughout New York City, Holmes has filed for divorce from his wife, Marilee Fiebig.
According to reports from US Weekly, Holmes, 45, filed for divorce from his wife in New York City Wednesday, Dec. 28. Just two days earlier, he was spotted at the Atlanta International Airport with Robach, getting ready to jet off for the holidays with his arm around his girlfriend in photos obtained by Daily Mail.

Robach and Holmes’s relationship was first revealed last month, after Daily Mail posted photos of the Good Morning America hosts getting awfully close to one another outside of work. Both TV personalities have been married to other people since 2010, but Yahooreports Robach and Holmes had both separated from their respective spouses–actor Andrew Shue and attorney Marilee Fiebig–over the summer.
Now, Holmes’ divorce from Fiebig is officially moving forward.
Just one day after their supposed affair made headlines, Holmes and Robach went on to host GMA3 together. While neither of them addressed the brewing scandal, directly, they both made jokes about how tough of a week it had been–only to get pulled off the air the following week.
ABC News President Kim Godwin told employees Dec. 5 during an editorial call that while Holmes and Robach’s consensual relationship “is not a violation of company policy,” the network had to work through what’s best for the company. ABC launched an internal review and, for now, Holmes and Robach remain sidelined.

Canada to pay First Nations Billions because of the harm caused by the foster care system.

Cindy Blackstock says birth certificate convinced her that Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond has no Cree ancestry
Cindy Blackstock says birth certificate convinced her that Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond has no Cree ancestry
Cindy Blackstock, an internationally recognized First Nations scholar and child welfare expert, says the birth certificate of William Turpel, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond’s father, was the final straw. Earlier this week, CBC revealed that an official government birth certificate showed William Turpel was the natural-born child of British parents, not an adopted Cree boy of undetermined parentage from…

Cindy Blackstock is a member of the Gitxsan First Nation and currently serves as the executive director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society and is a professor at McGill University.
The government of Canada is a repeat offender when it comes to discrimination against First Nations children. Yet it is so bound up in its colonial ideology that it expects First Nations to be grateful for small measures that relieve some, but not all, of its discriminatory conduct. In 2020, it is time to stop feeding the government’s insatiable appetite to be thanked for its inadequate measures and to demand a complete end to the inequality.
Evidence linking federal shortfalls in basic public services with the deaths and unnecessary family separations of First Nations children dates back 112 years. Despite this, Canada has repeatedly chosen to normalize inequality rather than fix the problem. Its warped expectation of gratitude is embedded in phrases we hear all too often: “We have done more than any other government”; “We are taking good first steps”; “Be patient—it’s complex”; “Change can’t happen overnight”; and the latest one, “We are talking to partners.”
Canada tends to frame itself as a benevolent leader in the midst of this ongoing human tragedy in order to reassure a caring public that something is being done. In reality, little is actually changing on the ground for these children, their families and their communities.

Last month APTN reported that 102 Indigenous children died in Ontario’s child welfare system. It’s a tragic and infuriating look at how the system fails Indigenous children and puts their lives at risk. It’s also a story about unconscionable inequality in a system that is supposed to protect vulnerable children. Cindy Blackstock joins to talk about that story and about taking the government to court on behalf of the rights of Indigenous children.

Canada’s Indigenous-rights movement has been named a recipient of a prestigious award from Amnesty International, drawing attention to persistent inequality in one of the world’s wealthiest countries.
Amnesty International describes the Ambassador of Conscience Award as its highest honour, given annually to those who show courage in standing up to injustice. In announcing the award, Amnesty underlined the fact that although they live in a prosperous country, Canada’s Indigenous peoples are “consistently among the most marginalized members of society.”
Children’s rights advocate Cindy Blackstock, Truth and Reconciliation Commission chair and Senator Murray Sinclair, relatives of missing and murdered Indigenous women and leaders of Idle No More are among the six people selected to represent the movement.
Ms. Blackstock was the driving force behind a 2016 Human Rights Tribunal victory that concluded the Canadian government was discriminating against Indigenous children on reserves because it failed to provide the same level of social services available to those living in the rest of Canada. She said this award serves as a reminder of the chronic injustices facing Indigenous children.

First Nations Child and Family Services Programms arbeiten. IRSSS Hotline for Survivors and Family: 1-866-925-4419
CONTENT WARNING: Residential Schools, child death, anti-indigenous racism, sexual assault mention.
As this is my largest platform, I’d just like to remind everyone that here in my country, bodies of over 1000 indigenous children have been found on the grounds of residential schools. There bodies are still being discovered as more grounds are searched. Indigenous people have called for Canada day celebrations to be cancelled and used as a day for settlers to educate themselves. As I am a settler living on unceded Mi’kmaq territory in Mi’kma’ki, I think it’s important I share resources, petitions and information on my largest platform.
Residential Schools were institutions run by christian churches (Catholic and Anglican most notably, the Catholic Church has yet to give an apology) as well as the Canadian Government. They ran until the late 90s. Children were forcibly taken from their homes by the RCMP to be put in these “schools” where they suffered countless forms of abuse including sexual assault, beatings and starvation. The Canadian government continues to fight survivors in court.
If you are in Canada, please wear orange today for the Every Child Matters movement. If you have any additional resources or petitions or donation links please add them.

Art by: @gaysalishart The unmarked grave of 215 Indigenous children was found and announced near a residential school in BC, Canada recently. The death rate was immense in residential schools, and this is not the only school with a mass grave. “As early as 1904, the government of Canada knew that its unequal provision of health care funding was contributing to the death rates of children in these schools at a rate of about 25 per cent. It was in the media and everything,” Cindy Blackstock, executive director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society. There are stories of children being forced to dig graves for other children, and this is in addition to all the physical abuse, sexual abuse, mental abuse, and malnourishment. The government has gaslit Indigenous people for years about their experiences, but the mass graves clearly demonstrate what the Canadian government did to Indigenous children. #honourthe215 #everychildmatters #kamloops #canada #honourresidentialschoolsurvivors
Witches, please take the time to educate yourselves on Indigenous issues if you have not, and to advocate. Many people who practice witchcraft are known for benefiting from Native culture without offering anything in return, and we are against that here at Witch of Dusk. We also are against taking pieces of culture for your own practice against the wishes of indigenous people. 🧡 (at Kamloops, British Columbia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPi9rTPH-ZJ/?utm_medium=tumblr

This is a must watch video of Cindy Blackstock speaking about the Trudeau’s government’s decision to appeal the human rights tribunal which is demanding that the Federal Government properly invest in Indigenous Children.
It is because of Cindy Blackstock that this human rights ruling is even happening. She has fought both Conservative and Liberal governments to properly fund Indigenous children for years.
