Latest haul!
I made another visit to my local book store and you’ll be able to see what I purchased below. I’ve come to realize this year that reading books and purchasing books are two completely different hobbies of mine. With as many books that I have in my collection at the moment, I’m surprised that people aren’t stopping by my house thinking that another branch has opened up that’s apart of the city…

Author Chris Grabenstein is responsible for Miller Lite's "Great Taste, Less Filling" slogan.
I wonder how he felt about Miller Lite's infamous catfight commercial from 2003?

Grades 5-8: Treasure Hunters by James Patterson and Chris Grabenstein
“The Kidd siblings have grown up diving down to shipwrecks and traveling the world, helping their famous parents recover everything from swords to gold doubloons from the bottom of the ocean. But after their parents disappear on the job, the kids are suddenly thrust into the biggest treasure hunt of their lives. They’ll have to work together to defeat dangerous pirates and dodge the hot pursuit of an evil treasure hunting rival, all while following cryptic clues to unravel the mystery of what really happened to their parents,” (TH, 2013).
Grades 9-12: A Girl Named Disaster by Nancy Farmer
“When cholera decimates a village in Mozambique, a muvuki (traditional healer) identifies the cause of the illness as the work of an ngozi (avenging spirit) who had been slain by the orphan Nhamo’s father. The muvuki decrees that Nhamo must marry the ngozi’s surviving brother – a diseased and brutal man. Urged by her grandmother, Nhamo runs away, in hopes of finding her father’s family in Zimbabwe. The two- or three-day boat trip, however, turns into a months-long odyssey through wilderness, where Nhamo must call upon all the skills she has ever learned in order to stay alive,” (AGND, 1996).
Available starting tomorrow, July 1!

Propaganda
Great Library of Zosma, Strange the Dreamer by Lainie Taylor:
None
Library of Alexandria, The Atlas series:
This is a freaking half-sentient all knowing wise library that got bullied by one half-insane drunk and depressed empath into giving him the information it was specifically supposed to withhold
What a pathetic mess of a Library
Cemetery of Forgotten Books, Cemetery of Forgotten Books series by Carlos Ruiz Zafón:
None
The Scholomance Library, A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik:
The library inside the Scholomance is so cool. It’s open to a void above, and is the safest place inside the entire school. The sections are mostly in the same place every time. But the shelves can stretch out and fill up with more books
Alexandriaville Public Library, Mr Lemoncello's Library series by Chris Grabenstein:
A Wonka-esque (minus the deadly traps) library renovated by a genius game designer. The middle grade book series involves kids who must solve reading related puzzles that are hidden throughout the library, including in their personalized library cards. All stacks have special hover machines to find the perfect book and a holographic librarian to help out.

Tips for Children's Librarians (5/?)
Tips on how to be a good host for an author visit if you're a school librarian that I have learned from my children's author mom:
1. Get the kids to come up with questions beforehand as a class and decide who's asking what so there are no awkward pauses while you're waiting for someone to think of something or deciding who should talk next.
2. If you're having the author visit with multiple classes at the same time, keep track of the questions that each class has decided on so there are no doubles or questions that are basically the same question so they aren't asked the same question twice. You can either come up with the questions with each class or you can create a Google doc and share it with the teachers so they can come up with the questions with the class while seeing what's already been asked.
3. Make sure to have more questions than you think you'll need; it's better to have extras and not need them than the other way around (make sure to explain to the kids that you most likely won't get to all questions and why you wanted more questions than you have time for).
4. If your visit is virtual, let your author know beforehand what platform you'll be using and offer to do a test run if they're unfamiliar with it or have a history of having issues logging on with that platform.
E.g. For my recent author visit with Chris Grabenstein he mentioned having issues with Microsoft Teams in the past, so I offered to do a test run and he asked that we meet 15 minutes before the actual visit so we could iron out any possible tech issues. For my upcoming visit with Gail Carson Levine she's unfamiliar with Teams, so we'll be meeting today to do a trial run so she can see what the setup is like o she can know what to expect.
Bonus:
Something I thought of yesterday that seemed to be very appreciated by the author I'll be having an author visit with next Thursday
If possible, send the author the questions before the visit so they can know what to expect and can think about their answers beforehand and potentially prepare any visuals or something that they think would be good when answering the questions.
