■ Story
For years now, the Shinra Electric Power Company has been providing the world with energy at the expense of the lifestream, the “river” whence all life flows and whither it returns.
After storming the company’s headquarters and engaging in a series of battles for the ages, Cloud and his companions leave Midgar behind and set out for the wider world. Once in the grasslands, they hop aboard chocobos and embark on a journey with an unknown destination.
Meanwhile, Zack—beaten and battered from his fight against an army of troopers—hobbles across the wastelands into Midgar with a mako-poisoned Cloud on his shoulder. Though he has managed to escape death for now, the ominous rift in the sky gives him little reason to rejoice.
That is hardly the only threat facing the world, however. The Shinra Resistance Committee, backed by Wutai’s interim government, declares war on the company; figures shrouded in black robes carry with them the corpse of Jenova, a veritable calamity from another world; and the Weapons—fierce and monstrous guardians of the planet—have recently awakened.
Amid this chaos, Sephiroth has set his plan in motion, thus ensuring myriad fates intertwine and are birthed anew.
■ Characters
Cloud Strife (voiced by Cody Christian in English, Takahiro Sakurai in Japanese)
“There’s no point in wasting our time worrying about fate if we can’t change it.”
Tumblr media
An ex-SOLDIER: first class, Cloud came to Midgar to start a new chapter of his life as a mercenary. At the invitation of his childhood friend, Tifa, he accepts a job with Avalanche. Together, they confront Shinra, ultimately leaving Midgar behind in pursuit of Sephiroth and the truth─a quest which will lead them to defy destiny itself.
—Weapon: Sword
He fights by switching between modes specializing in mobility and offense. A single swipe of his huge sword can knock several foes off their feet at once. Some of his abilities also allow him to take the fight to the air.
Barret Wallace (voiced by John Eric Bentley in English, Masato Funaki in Japanese)
“This is the planet we’re talkin’ about! Y’all know she’s gonna pour her heart and soul into this fight!”
Tumblr media
The leader of an independent Avalanche cell, Barret spearheads an operation to take down Shinra’s mako reactors. He pays a hefty price for this, however, when the company retaliates, and his comrades die in the crossfire. Armed with the memories of his lost friends and the newfound knowledge of Sephiroth’s plans, he departs Midgar in hope of saving the planet and safeguarding a future for his daughter Marlene.
—Weapon: Gunarm
What he lacks in speed, he makes up for in both sturdiness and strength, converting his anger toward Shinra into raw firepower. He employs a variety of ranged attacks, from rapid-fire salvos to powerful explosions, which allow him to strike foes high in the air or across the battlefield.
Tifa Lockhart (voiced by Britt Baron in English, Ayumi Ito in Japanese)
“Ever wish you could just snap your fingers and forget the worst stuff?”
Tumblr media
Though a loyal member of Avalanche—an underground organization that opposes Shinra—Tifa nevertheless questions the group’s extremist tactics, struggling to reconcile her cause with her conscience. This internal conflict reaches a fever pitch when her group’s actions effectively lead to the fall of the Sector 7 plate. Racked with guilt, she leaves Midgar in search of a new path to tread.
—Weapon: Gloves
She strings together swift combos while utilizing a variety of martial art techniques. Her ATB fills quickly, allowing for the use of multiple abilities in rapid succession. She also boasts several skills that deal more damage to airborne or staggered foes.
Aerith Gainsborough (voiced by Briana White in English, Maaya Sakamoto in Japanese)
“Just look at it all… A living, breathing planet. Even after everything we’ve done to it, it’s still going strong.”
Tumblr media
A flower seller who lives in the Sector 5 undercity and the last remaining descendant of the Cetra, a people known for communing with the planet. Shinra takes her prisoner in their efforts to reach the Cetra’s foretold “promised land,” but Cloud and company come to her rescue. She escapes Midgar and embarks on a journey into the outside world of which she has long dreamed.
—Weapon: Staff
Utilizing the power of magic, she casts spells from a safe distance and launches attacks that home in on her foes. She can also conjure beneficial wards and warp between them, as well as restore the party’s HP with her limit break.
Red XIII (voiced by Max Mittelman in English, Kappei Yamaguchi in Japanese)
“I may be clad in fur…but that doesn’t mean I’ll purr.”
Tumblr media
Red XIII is a beast with a flaming tail, crimson fur, deadly claws, and the ability to speak. Cloud and company help him escape Professor Hojo’s clutches, and he decides to join them on their journey. His species is known for their long life spans, and he is no exception. As this Cosmo Canyon native is the eldest member of the party, he offers its members words of wisdom from time to time.
—Weapon: Collar
He sets upon foes with an unrelenting assault, laying into them with a beastly ferocity. Guarding against incoming attacks will feed his Vengeance gauge. Once it is full, he can unleash his inner beast, but sufficient skill is required to maximize its potential.
Yuffie Kisaragi (voiced by Suzie Yeung in English, Yumi Kakazu in Japanese)
“If I win, you get the honor of serving yours truly!”
Tumblr media
A member of Wutai’s elite corps of ninja operatives, Yuffie infiltrates Midgar on a mission to steal the “ultimate materia” from Shinra. Her plan ends in disaster, as she fails to claim the materia and loses her partner Sonon in the struggle. Just as working alone begins to take its toll on her, however, Cloud’s group comes into the picture.
—Weapon: Throwing Star
Using her throwing star and ninja skills, she excels at both long- and close-range combat. Elemental ninjutsu allows her to exploit enemies’ weaknesses without relying on spells. She also keeps opponents on their toes with a variety of aerial attacks and tricky techniques.
Cait Sith (voiced by Paul Tinto in English, Hideo Ishikawa in Japanese)
“Alright, everyone! By popular request: a fortune or two to steer you true!”
Tumblr media
A wisecracking, feline-shaped robot often seen poised atop his big moogle pal. One of the Gold Saucer’s most popular mascots, he is well loved for his fortune telling—a service he also offers to Cloud and friends. His adorable appearance also belies access to a surprising amount of insider intel on Shinra.
Sephiroth (voiced by Tyler Hoechlin in English, Toshiyuki Morikawa in Japanese)
“Don’t be afraid. It’s not death—it’s a homecoming.”
Tumblr media
A former SOLDIER: 1st class of legendary renown, he is said to have died in the line of duty in Nibelheim five years ago. This is proven untrue when he appears at the Shinra Building and absconds with a research specimen known as “Jenova.” He now toys with Cloud at every opportunity, seeking to change the course of destiny and rule the planet.
Zack Fair (voiced by Caleb Piece in English, Kenichi Suzumura in Japanese)
“I dunno—hopes? Dreams, maybe? Something like that! So long as we’ve got those—and hold on tight and never let go.”
Tumblr media
Zack may have worked with Sephiroth as a SOLDIER: 1st class, but he trained under a different operator, and it is from this man that he both learned to take pride in his work and received his iconic buster sword. After a grueling battle in which he overcomes the odds and cheats death, Zack returns to Midgar—where he hopes to see his love Aerith—with a mako-poisoned Cloud in tow.

■ Messages from the Development Staff
Yoshinori Kitase, Producer
“Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has been set for release on February 29, 2024. This second installment of the Final Fantasy VII remake project will feature elements from the previous game, as well as greatly enhanced features such as the vast world map to explore and synergy abilities with party members. The story will unfold more dramatically than ever before, with a rapid pace of major twists and turns. We know fans are dying to see one scene in particular…
“Final Fantasy VII Rebirth can be enjoyed on its own as a standalone adventure, with the party leaving Midgar to explore the wide world beyond. But for those wishing to deepen their understanding of the story, a recap of the previous game will also be provided.
“We hope that both fans and those who have never played Final Fantasy before will enjoy this game.”
Naoki Hamaguchi, Director
“We are finally able to announce the release date to all of you! We have been working tirelessly on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth since the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake, and we can’t wait for you to experience our labor of love. In this title, Cloud and his friends, who have fled Midgar, will be setting out on an adventure across an expansive world of untold adventure in pursuit of Sephiroth.
“While the main storyline is bigger and more ambitious than the previous game’s narrative, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth also embraces the concept of ‘free exploration,’ with compelling stories, fun mini-games, powerful monsters and so much more to find throughout the world map. We hope you will explore this world in great detail, as nearly 100 hours of adventure awaits.
“We hope you will take this new Final Fantasy game experience in your own hands to enjoy.”
Tetsuya Nomura, Creative Director
“This is the second title of a trilogy, and covers between the start of the journey outside Midgar to the midpoint of the original Final Fantasy VII. If Final Fantasy VII Remake was an introduction to the world and a preparation for this journey, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth serves as an illustration of the incidents that started the journey, an exploration of the people tied to it, and the journey itself, heading toward its climax. Many elements were carefully selected for this title and because this is a series, we have the unique opportunity to review and incorporate feedback from the previous title, such as by increasing the number of characters. I am sure that the bar for the next work will be raised even higher now that we have included so many spectacular elements in this work, but even so, the entire team continues to work diligently and without compromise on its development.
“There is also the looming question of what fate awaits. Whether you have experienced the original title or will embark on this adventure with fresh eyes, we hope you will face the ending of this work on your own terms.”

*These are not official groupings, just mine.
EARLY (1987-1993)
Mainline games released: I, II, III, IV, V.
Other notable releases: the Legend series, Mystic Quest
Established the formula & series mainstays--job classes, summons, chocobos & moogles, etc.
These games were relatively simple at first, but soon became trailblazers for epic storytelling in RPGs--especially IV (or initially II in North America).
Pixel guys.
Mostly known by their many (many, many) remasters and remakes.
Modern audiences might find their stories rote and their gameplay unnecessarily difficult, but they still enjoy a tiny, vocal fanbase.
GOLDEN (1994-2001)
Mainline games released: VI**, VII, VIII, IX, X.
Other notable releases: Tactics, Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon, Anthology, Chronicles
With the formula established & with the more powerful hardware of fifth- (and later sixth-) generation consoles, FF pushed boundaries and graphical limitations to produce their most ambitious games (and marketing campaigns) yet. You might say they succeeded, for better or worse; Final Fantasy VII is generally considered to be the very first AAA video game.
The era that the majority of the FF fanbase on the Internet is most nostalgic for, a fact that might inspire either your own misty-eyed recollection of the good ol' days, or an overwhelming desire to snap the rose-tinted glasses. Or both.
Saw the first of many (many, many) ports across different systems--in part to give English-speaking audiences access to the early games they missed, but also as blatant cash-grabs.
Modern audiences who have no nostalgia for this era often voice that they find stylized 3D polygons much more difficult to acclimate to than the pixel guys.
**FFVI could arguably fall under the early era. If I'd made this poll fifteen years ago, when the division of fans between VI and VII was much more stark, that's where I would have put it. However, this poll is also about how modern audiences tend to think about their favorite FF games, and FFVI enjoys a nostalgic fanbase on par with those of the other games of the golden era. Search for it on any "best FF games of all time" list and you'll see what I mean.
COMPILATION (2002-2008)
Mainline games released: XI, XII.
Other notable releases: Crystal Chronicles, X-2, Compilation of FFVII (Before Crisis, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, etc.), FFXII: Revenant Wings, the Tactics Advance series & the War of the Lions remake of the original Tactics, the DS remakes of III & IV, the first Dissidia. (Also of note, though not directly beneath the FF umbrella, was the introduction of Kingdom Hearts.)
The era of sequels, remakes, remasters, crossovers, and extended universes, shepherded by the Square Enix merger. Only two mainline games were released in this period, and the one that was not an MMO was an entry in the newly-formed "Ivalice Alliance" (contrary to the desires of one of XII's principal developers, Yasumi Matsuno, who left the project before it was finished).
While of course we've seen plenty of sequels & remakes since, this era went all-in on expanding Final Fantasy to the behemoth it is now. FFVII, its golden child, was showered with prequels and sequels. Crossovers were all the rage. Even games that were not strictly "Final Fantasy" games were retroactively roped into one of the existing canon masses, i.e. Vagrant Story into the Ivalice Alliance.
This was also the boom of handhelds, like the PSP and the beloved DS. Mainline games were saved for the heavyweight home consoles, while other titles were dispersed across the smaller systems.
Very few "new" worlds with no preexisting ties to the other games (outside of the shared banner of Final Fantasy) were created in this time, XI and Crystal Chronicles being the few exceptions.
If you enjoyed seeing the games you loved from the 90s getting more content, this era was a delight. If you'd rather the original entries were left alone, it was a painful sign of things to come.
EXPERIMENTAL (2009-2015)
Mainline games released: XIII, XIV (twice)
Other notable releases: XIII-2 & Lightning Returns, Type-0 (also a member of XIII's Fabula Nova Crystallis series), Dissidia 012, the Theatrhythm series, the first expansion for XIV (Heavensward), Record Keeper, Brave Exvius
FF's darkest era. XIII was the first time FF tried something new since XI--brand new world, female protagonist, fresh spin on the old ATB formula--and it fell just short of catastrophic. XIII and its sequels were not well-received (though whether this negative backlash was "deserved" is another story). The game that would later become XV was originally intended to be Versus XIII, an entry in Fabula Nova Crystallis. Between XIII's poor reception and Versus XIII's fraught development, this didn't happen.
The initial release of XIV, on the other hand, was catastrophic. It was so bad that the entire thing had to be rebooted.
The good news is XIV's reboot, A Realm Reborn, did so well that XIV is widely considered one of the best MMOs of all time. The reboot is also one of the earliest examples of video game "rehabilitation," in that a dramatic change or update to the original game transforms a negative experience into a positive one, and thus scrapes back the good will of the player. (No Man's Sky is a non-FF example.)
The virulent criticism of XIII has softened over the years, and it enjoys a small, dedicated fanbase.
You started to see FF dip into mobile games at this point, too.
MODERN (2016-2023)
Mainline games released: XV, XVI
Other notable releases: World of Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, Dissidia NT, Dissidia Opera Omnia, Final Fantasy VII Remake, the pixel remasters of I-VI, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Reunion, Crisis Core: Reunion, a slew of expansions for XIV
The long-anticipated release of XV heralded a new age (as well as a movie and an anime). In contrast to XIII, XV was very popular, and put FF back on the map. People loved the boys' road trip.
XIV is still going strong. I don't play MMOs but I'm happy for them.
The remakes & remasters are back, and looking more realistic than ever (if you're into that sort of thing). Look at how many individual pores you can see on your old favorites' faces! The most successful of these is the Final Fantasy VII Remake, which is not a remake as much as it's a conversation with the original game, a move that both drew in a new audience and softened (some of) the diehard og-VII fans who disliked the rest of the Compilation.
Stranger of Paradise is an odd duck attempting to evoke the uncanny valley weirdness of the PS3 era. YMMV on if it worked.
The modern FF games step further out of the boundaries of what an FF game is, dropping ATB combat in favor of real-time action that's all the rage these days. In a first, XVI doesn't have any party members. For the folks who've grown tired of ATB and crave the fast-paced action of the modern day, XVI was a hit (though, I've heard, it failed to deliver on the story).
The endless conversation about whether FF ought to be evolving this far outside of its "formula" (whatever one believes that to be) might feel tired to the average FF fan. But, going forward, it's worth talking about the ways in which FF has neglected to evolve, or even gone backwards: such as the dev team of XV stating that the inclusion of women would cause their core bros to act unnaturally, thus why there are no female party members in the game, or the dev team of XVI deliberately not including a diverse cast because their fantasy game is inspired by medieval Europe.
Tell me which era you voted for in the tags, and what your personal favorite FF game is!

Update Rebirth 1
Since I just ran into my first gamebreaking bug in rebirth I thought this would be a good moment to share some thoughts. Right now I was trying to investigate my first Mako spring, Chadley contacted me telling me to scan it, I button pressed through his dialogue and then the game got stuck on me watching the backside of a chocobo. Tried to use cutscene skip but it's stuck on a black screen with loading animation.
Anyway, so far my take on the game is this "Good game, bad telling of FFVII". While I am enjoying my experience for the most part I've noticed that any iconic scene from the OG is generally handled better in the OG, especially when it comes to cinematography. Sephiroth walking through the fire was more effective when literally all you saw was him, the fire, and blackness behind it. When Sephiroth walks out of Shinra mansion the shot composition of the original along with the animation gave his stride a sense of purpose and unease. In general the atmosphere when the horror starts is simply better in the OG. This was a problem in Remake as well, especially in the shinra building. The main problem seems to be that SE has forgotten how to build suspense, and as a main example of that, lets look at the scene of Tifa telling Aerith that "as far as she knows, Cloud wasn't in Nibelheim". Why is this scene there? This is far too spoonfed for the mystery aspect of the OG. In the OG we don't know that there is anything strange about the Nibelheim story, the realization that something is wrong creeps up on the player. It results from small inconsistencies and strange behaviors like Tifas behavior, but it is never spelled out. When you are told "there is a mystery here", then there is a comfort in knowing that everything is going according to the wishes of the story, nothing feels "wrong" because you're supposed to not know. The trick in creating great suspense is uncertainty. Imagine if we changed nothing about the scene in kalm except for straight up removing Tifa telling Aerith about Cloud. We, the player, would be in the same situation as Cloud, we wouldn't know that Tifa and Aerith had talked. We would be in our rooms and Tifa knocking on our door would be a surprise. Then Tifa tells us she needs to ask us something but we interrupt, and the question is never asked. Because we're in Clouds shoes our suspicions would be on Tifa, but since we had the talk with Aerith now we instead suspect ourselves. The problem is that SE is approaching this as if we've already played FFVII, which is why I saw that while this is a good game, it's a bad telling of FFVII. So far, the things added to change it up have reduced the focus of the original narrative. I think this lack of focus is also present in the mechanics of the game itself, which have become far more cluttered, confusing, and needlessly convoluted. Still enjoying it though, will try to talk about some of the positives next time.

CLASSICAL WRITER AESTHETICS
BOLD OR COLORIZE THE AESTHETICS THAT ALWAYS APPLY TO YOUR MUSE, ITALICIZE THE AESTHETICS THAT SOMETIMES APPLY TO YOUR MUSE, AND STRIKE THROUGH THE AESTHETICS THAT WILL NEVER APPLY TO YOUR MUSE.
Tumblr media
JOHN KEATS. the lavender in sunsets, flowers in the rain, sunlight slipping through clouds, lazy summer afternoons, flickering candlelight reflecting off the gold titles of books, fireflies on a cool summer night, being wrapped in fresh bed sheets, the ache of wanting what you can never have, dripping sunlight like gold, loving someone so exquisite, soft lips and soft whispers, fingers through hair, names of lovers carved in trees, broken glass, the insistence of being perpetually dreamy.
F. SCOTT FITZGERALD. crisp winter skies with cold bright stars, mahogany wood, the solitude of an early autumn morning wrapped in fog, empty bottles on stacks and stacks of books haphazardly placed in a messy room, pale bruised arms reaching out into the darkness, cigarette smoke just barely hiding the scent of alcohol, a wall of books all poetry and old and weathered, a bad thunderstorm occurring at the end of a beautiful day, the way tragedy strikes in your heart but ends up stopping your breathing for a moment, your favorite sweater, parties spilling into four a.m. with the stars above spinning and dancing, the contrast of blood against snow, a purple split lip oozing blood, black eyes fading to blue to pale skin, the butterflies of falling in love for the first time, the statues falling apart over time in cemeteries, the romanticization of self-destruction.
FRANZ KAFKA. the weight of dread that sits heavily in your stomach when thinking about the future, decrepit houses cloaked in mystery from children telling stories of people who died there, the way not even light can escape a black hole, the rich smell of old books, delicate veins in the wrist, ghosts filling lungs, shattered bones, raindrops on the tongue, rusting metal, nostalgia that aches, the way hope feels like a plastic bag over your head.
H.P. Mutual, congratulate me - I've finally freakin read that Gaming Ask List you reblogged... uhhhhh... 6th jan. ANYWAY

I'm gonna send a few of these together, feel free to answer as many or as few as you wish to)
3. Favourite childhood game?
7. Most disappointing game you’ve played?
8. The game with the best atmosphere/scenery?
12. Most bizarre game you’ve ever played?
14. Do you watch playthroughs online?
15. Favourite animal in a video game?
21. If you had to play one game for the rest of your life, what would it be?
26. How often do you play online? Co-op?
30. On average, how long does it take you in the character creation screen?
43. Favourite sidekick or companion?
54. A sequel you really want?
62. Would you want to work with video games when you are older?
65. Any favourite screenshots of games?
72. Have any guilty pleasure games?
74. Which game has the best lore?
(links don't work with asks so I'll link the original post the ancient way) tumblr dot com /corvoblinks/136954217573/75-gaming-asks
That's a new record, mutual! xDDDDD Old ask games are still valid in my blog, so thank you for sending one!
Oh hoh boy, let's talk video games!
3. Yoshi's Island for the SNES, no doubt! This game might be the first I have ever played! (at least, it's the first game I have played with the most vivid memories) Started it when I was little, picking up a joystick controller to play on the good old ZSNES emulator (that pixelated menu is so nostalgic for me), which my dad set up for me to play.
It was my first contact with a video game and a emulator, and one could say it was all downhill from there xDD
Childhood memories aside, the game itself is pretty good! A very fun platformer with very charming graphics. It's also pretty satisfying to 100%.
8. Ummm, there's some containders for that! As I have said in a post before, Castlevania SOTN has some of my favorite vibes and atmospheres in gaming, and it accomplishes that with a great blend of graphics and sound design.
The first Metal Gear Solid on the PSX also has an amazing atmosphere to it, despite the old-dated low polygon graphics.
Super Castlevania IV on the SNES is of the most atmospheric games on that system, and in true CV fashion, a good part of that is achieved through the soundtrack. The waterfalls and dracula's battle theme are highlights to me:
youtube
youtube
Dark Souls 1, which I'm currently playing, captures the feel of adventuring into a mysterious, dying world extremely well. The level design is intricate and the areas are interconnected in many ways, each with a unique vibe and story attached. Playing this game blind is highly recommended, as it enhances the experience a lot!
12. I haven't played it, but Top Banana for the Amiga does not look like something that should exist xD It looks cursed, sounds cursed, and it probably plays like a curse too.
youtube
As for something that I have played, I gotta say Ecco the Dolphin (and it's sequel). A beloved childhood game of mine, it's strange in a beautiful way, and even as a kid I was mystified by it (I still am).
14. Only snippets and ocasionally a live stream (I don't usually stay for long, though).
15. YOU CAN'T MAKE ME CHOOSE JUST ONE xDDDDD here's a comprehensive list of some of my most memorable favs:
   - Too many Pokemon to count, so here are a few that immediately come to mind: Flygon, Luxray, Reshiram, Elektross, Hydreigon, Skarmory, Breloom.
   - My BOTW horses <333
   - Chocobos
    - The Guardian Ape from Sekiro (awesome boss)
    - D-Dog from MGSV (most precious boi) 21. That's a really hard one xDD Certainly something highly replayable and endlessly fun. Perhaps DMC or Ultrakill?
26. Not very often. I have been engaging with DS1's multiplayer systems, and they're pretty fun!
30. Depends both on the game and my current creativity.
43. My boy D-Dog (mentioned above) is so helpful. So helpful in fact that it makes infiltrating too easy sometimes xD His ability to map out all nearby enemies by their scent makes it super fun to plan strategies ahead, and also you can pet him! :D
54. Sekiro 2 please??? (puppy eyes at Miyazaki)
62. y e s
65. Quite a few! (these are completely out of order, btw)

for the character ask game~
shoto todoroki or cloud strife!! take your pick >:3
Aahhhh I thanks for saying Cloud I don't talk so much about him. I hope you don't get to lost with this lol
favorite thing about them: I suck at picking favorites, but I love how he acts all cool and mysterious but is actually very socially awkward and even dumb, getting confused when asked for a high five and thinking he could somehow open a giant door by HITTING IT WITH HIS SWORD.
least favorite thing about them: Nothing in particular. He's a jerk at times but that makes his character more realistic and tridimentional. I don't like his JP VA though... He does a good job, but I think that guy cheated on his wife so I wish they'd change his VA.
favorite line: "You really don't understand, there is nothing that isn't important to me" I love this line SO MUCH. It signifies so much for Cloud and his development seriously.
brOTP: Zack/Cloud. They kinda remind me of Sonic and Tails and Zack is very important in Cloud's story
OTP: Aerith/Cloud. It might look like a typical "Shy girl x bad boy" type of thing, but it's the complete opposite. Aerith is super teasy and energetic while Cloud just has to somehow manage with his terrible social skills. Aerith has a lot of impact on Cloud as a person and having her was very good for him.
nOTP: Sephiroth/Cloud... I won't hate anyone for shiping them but... Why? Sephiroth tried killing him, more than once.
random headcanon: I don't think I have any, sorry. But here's a fun fact about him, he owns a bike named Fenrir and apparently he got it by giving the original owner free food at Seventh Heaven (A bar owned by his childhood friend Tifa) for the rest of his life. I don't know who gave the idea but the fact that both Cloud and Tifa agreed to it because loved the bike that much is adorable to me.
unpopular opinion: His character was great in Advent Children. I wouldn't even say it's him relapsing, it's just logical he was acting like that.
song i associate with them: Ghost Town by NateWantsToBattle (It might not be 100% accurate, but I always think of Cloud when I hear it)
favorite picture of them: Hmmmmmm It's difficult to choose... But I love this offical art from the OG.
Tumblr media
Looks at him he's so happy riding the Chocobo (Yeah that's a giant bird creature you can ride named Chocobo) I just think it's very cute. I wish there was more offical art for the original game, the artsyle is so cool.

any obscure games I can feel like a hipster playing? don't care if they're technically mediocre sometimes they vibe more that way.
sure here's a list of niche games (perhaps not obscure) i enjoy:
final fantasy 2 - obligatory rec; technically mediocre for sure and i guess you'll either feel like a hipster or a nerd and i think both are acceptable. please please please please please please etc etc
lufia 2 - as someone who has only played loz link's awakening this feels like that with jrpg fights. it is really good and the og is on my to-play list eventually but this game is just so fucking cool. plot is a little wack but whatever. music is really good too
suikoden - i personally like the first more than the second but both ps1 titles are really good - standard jrpg affair but i would consider them niche enough to put on a list here. i am sloooowly playing through the third game but i have enjoyed my time with it through the first few bits
legend of the dark witch - anime babe platformer. decent mix of easy and hard entries but i had a fun time with the series
terranigma - truthfully I haven't gotten very far into it but it is niche so could be worth your time nona
vagrant story - tbh I don't care for the plot but the gameplay is straight fire and sydney losstarot is very cool
legend of dragoon - BURNING RUSH... SPINNING CANE... MORE AND MORE.... COOOOOL BOOGIE... SUMMON FOUR GODS... etc etc. plot gets kind of wack in the later discs but holy FUCK is the gameplay so good.
etrian odyssey just in general - i had a fun time playing the fafnir knight; prolly best to google this series bc youtube can explain it better than i can
final fantasy tactics advance - not obscure but my favorite tactics game. it's a tactics game. not much more to say
ace combat - probably obscure to you if you're looking at my blog; but i really liked ace combat 2. if you enjoy plane shootey games it is good
if you like schlocky fanservice games lord of magna: maiden heaven is a fun romp with hot anime babes. twas little circle's awakening to the vast world of video games (outside pokémon and project diva) so it holds a special place in my heart. grant george voices the antag. so.... yeah
if you like mystery dungeon games i really enjoyed chocobo dungeon 2; the ffx-2 dungeon game I didn't really get into but it is niche
once i finally escape from Scholarly Hell for summer the next game i plan on playing is legend of legaia. truthfully it seems like xenogears with the combat system but i cannot tell whether it is better or worse but i will probably make a post about it in a few months
oh. you know what? play xenogears. play xenogears, nona. you should play xenogears.
or final fantasy 2. because it is good. at least if you squint really hard and tilt your head and squint a little more

I need more people who know about the FF game with Prompto to read and then write crossovers with Rising of the Shield Hero.
Rising of the Shield Hero is a story where 4 boys from alternative universe versions of Japan get isekaied to a specific country to stop the waves in which a bunch of monsters appear and more and more monsters appear and fuck shit up until the boss monster is offed.
The 4 heroes each have a different weapon that are supposed to be divine. The bow hero, the spear hero, the sword hero, and the Shield Hero who can't do any damage :(
The 4 heroes aren't allowed to team up because they won't get as much exp to level up if they do. The weapons literally tell them that
The first three think the world they've been summoned into is similar to a game they've played in their original world- and kinda treat it that way.
The shield hero never played a game similar to it and because he has no knowledge of the world he's been kidnapped by - the other 3 were seconds/minutes away from dying Shield was just reading a book and was in no way shape or form in any danger- none of the adventures that were summoned to join one of the heroes would join him except one admittedly pretty girl who turns out to be the eldest princess of the nation and frames him for attempting sexual assault one day after joining his team. The other 3 believe her even though the claim is clear BS. And because unlike the other 3 the shield hero isn't worshipped everyone except 1 guy who can't give the shielder much help believes her and hates him. He ends up buying a child slave who's from a race that's humanoid but has animal features and ages up based on their level so she's a 10 when he buys her and then she levels up she looks 18.
The better Wikipedia summary is:
Naofumi Iwatani, a Japanese youth, was summoned into a parallel world along with 3 other young Japanese men from parallel universes to become the world's Cardinal Heroes and fight inter-dimensional hordes of monsters called Waves. Each of the heroes were respectively equipped with their own legendary equipment when summoned. Naofumi happened to receive the Legendary Shield, the sole defensive equipment, while the other heroes received respectively a sword, a spear, and a bow, weapons meant for attack. Unlike the other heroes who are fully supported by the kingdom and gain several strong allies each, Naofumi's luck turns to the worse after his single companion, revealed to be the kingdom's eldest princess, betrays him, steals all his belongings, and leaves him devoid of all assistance and supplies after she falsely accuses him of sexually assaulting her.
Shunned by everyone from his fellow Heroes to peasants, a now cynical Naofumi is forced to train as a hero alone while working to make ends meet, until he buys from a slave trader a young tanuki demi-human girl named Raphtalia and a bird-like monster who both quickly growing into adulthood and becoming powerful warriors under his care. As they little by little gain the trust and gratitude of the people with their heroic actions, Naofumi and his companions work together to carry out their mission as saviors as they unravel the mystery of the Waves and the reason why they are a threat not only to their world, but to other worlds as well.
You're probably asking me "FanGirl3, WTF does this have to do with Prompto Argentum?" Well I'll tell you. Rising of a Shield Hero has birds that resemble chocobos called Filolial. They look the same except for maybe color considering the shield hero anime has brown birds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyways if raised by a hero a Filolial can take a human form. And I am a simple girl who wants a Filolial to be named Prompto.
Glorious and I hope someone picks this up

So I’m finally getting around to playing the FF7 remake. I’ve played the original, and it’s always going to have a special place in my heart as the first game that really spurred me on into gaming. So here are my thoughts so far.
The story beats are well paced, I think. The city of Midgar and its various slums are really well fleshed out. I really appreciate just how cartoonishly evil Heidigger and Pres. Shinra are. Classic warmongers and corporate greedflationists. They really do not give a damn about anyone beneath them and it shows. I’m excited about the additional story beats and the mysterious spectres showing up as drivers of the plot, and adding that little bit of “wtf is going on here” to the background.
The main characters, and even side characters, are nicely fleshed out, too. Being able to listen to their voices, reading their faces and body language, and the much increased dialogue paints a much better and clearer picture of what’s going on with these people. And that nobody is that dumb. (Except Johnny. This Guy. OMG.) Cloud’s PTSD/Mako induced hallucinations and flashbacks are well done. He looks like he’s dealing with it in a healthy manner, except that he’s keeping it to himself. Tifa’s uncertainty and strong morality based on what’s happened to her. Barret has a hard exterior, but deep down he does care. Jesse recognizes that the explosion should not have been that big. She logically blames herself for this because she didn’t intend so large a blast radius.
It’s hitting my nostalgia for the original just right, and it’s got enough new things to keep it fresh. I’m liking this.
TURKS!!!! Reno is a shit and I love him and his stupid man cleavage. Rude and his ever ready spare sunglasses. Reno having fun with gadgets. Rude just THROWING YOU AROUND LIKE A TOY. Like holy hell! What even was that?!
Okay, so now I’m into Wall Market, and I’m just past the Hellhouse. One: Chocobo Sam is neat, I hope he gets more attention later. Two: Madam M. WHAT DID YOU DO TO CLOUD’S HANDS. (Yes, I got the Deluxe.) YOU BROKE HIS BRAIN A LITTLE BIT. GIRL. Three: the colosseum fights. What. Is. The Hellhouse. Scotch and Kotch are A+ at amping up a crowd. That was a ride. I have one more question.
Why have we not seen all of Andrea Rhodea’s face yet? Am I about to be screaming? I’m probably about to be screaming.
Final Note: Scarlet. Girl. How did you decide that Business Professional and Cocktail Hour were both valid for a working woman? I mean, you rock it, but I still gotta question your taste.

Well since you asked (and I've kinda been wondering about it) — what's chocobo's mystery dungeon like, especially compared to the pmd series?
LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
im putting this under a readmore because i (redacted)
so i gotta give a bit of context first: there is an entire spin-off series of final fantasy games all protagonized by a tiny little chocobo. i bring this up first because there were two dungeon crawlers on the playstation- these set up the regular returning elements of the chocobo series (namely some main characters), and it even runs with the trend of having cid in every ff game!
the specific one i love is Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon, it was on the wii and its a very basic dungeon crawling, PMD-esque game, with a hunger meter, monster houses, etc. i think the thing that sets it apart from other dungeon crawlers gameplay-wise is that it has a job or class system much like mainline final fantasy games do, in which you unlock access to eight different jobs that completely change up the playstyle AND the difficulty of the game due to their own niches (my favorite job for example, white mage, is very high difficulty until endgame)
for me the main reason why i want more people to know about it and try to give it a chance even if its just via an emulator is the story. i might be biased here but i first played this game when i was 9 years old and it still lives rent free in my brain to this day (im 21 now for context)
to not give any spoilers, the main premise is that chocobo and cid are treasure hunters looking for a gemstone; upon finding it, they're suddenly transported to a town in seemingly a completely different world where the citizens constantly lose all their memories everytime the belltower rings
the very first night they spend in this world, a meteor crashes in from the sky, turning out to be an egg from which a baby is born. this baby then proceeds to somehow start bringing people's memories back by allowing chocobo to enter their minds
this is also why i think its such a cool concept, because it uses memories and people's minds as the main set up for dungeon crawling, even representing memories as scattered puzzle pieces. and everytime you are inside someone's memories, you can hear snippets of their thoughts as you go along, ending in the full memory being fully restored when you exit
there are a ton of memory dungeons, one for almost every npc in town, and they introduce a thing called "special rule" dungeons for non-story ones where you have to play with certain gimmicks the whole way through (1 hp, perma blindness, enemy gauntlet, stuff like that). and every single one has those snippets of lore and foreshadowing you gotta piece together, little by little, to understand the truth behind the town
for the characters, the cast is very colorful and i think everybody genuinely feels very human. granted the voice acting isnt the best but it adds so much to the charm of it. plus the designs and all the official artwork there is is just breathtaking (ive only now been noticing there are a few elements in my own art that are subconsciously inspired from this game's artstyle)
i HAVE to mention raffaello here because now that i have a bigger understanding of how tropes and storytelling work, i can say for sure that he is just so, SO crazily well written; its not all in the text, but all the worldbuilding comes together eventually and that's when it really hits
and of course i gotta bring up the soundtrack- its almost entirely comprised of arrangements of older final fantasy songs and each and everyone of them is MAGICAL. its remained as one of my favorite soundtracks for years, so much that i realized that the official disc release was incomplete and went out and put together all 42 songs in the highest quality i could to make sure it doesnt become lost (this is a very reocurring theme with this game in particular)
i want people to play it and i want to talk about it. partially its because this is my favorite game. but also because its been THIS close to being a major case of lost media. there are SO many things that have been lost to time because they were japan only or they were overwritten on the internet (including the entire japanese chocobo series website portal, thats like three different unique websites with tons of never saved artwork they nuked). so much of it i still remember but i have zero way to access it anymore and it eats me from the inside out.
its a common theme of things being lost to time with this game but its also incredibly sad and funny because the entire theme of the game is things being lost to time. ouroboros. time is a flat circle.
and... here is where i come in talking about the remake- chocobo's mystery dungeon everybuddy and why i heavily recommend the original over it
so... the original wii game had a japan only ds port with some new elements and stuff. but the main thing with it is that they changed a LOT of the story; same plot, different execution, to fit in with a ds format. the problem with this is that the remake was based off of this version and not the original one, which leads to a LOT of serious and emotional moments being gutted and sped through.
the gameplay itself is fine, they actually made it even more pmd-like by adding a companion system, and they upped the difficulty a lot if you dont know what youre doing. but the story changes genuinely kill it for me if im being honest. they retconned what made me sad about the ending at the cost of everything else (and even then im angry because that took away from the intensely emotional ending that still had me crying like a baby LAST WEEK)
in general though. i just think this game is so beautifully crafted. this game originally came out in 2007 and it still holds up SO well. the graphics are very cute and stylized, but everything is so detailed that every single part of the world feels lived in. the town is very small but i think its why it always feels like coming home. huge recommend and i refuse to die until ive convinced at least one person to play it through to the end (its been 12 years and im still trying)

JOHN KEATS. the lavender in sunsets, flowers in the rain, sunlight slipping through clouds, lazy summer afternoons, flickering candlelight reflecting off the gold titles of books, fireflies on a cool summer night, being wrapped in fresh bed sheets, the ache of wanting what you can never have, dripping sunlight like gold, loving someone so exquisite, soft lips and soft whispers, fingers through hair, names of lovers carved in trees, broken glass, the insistence of being perpetually dreamy.
H.P. LOVECRAFT. the anxiety felt when staring into an unknown cave, pouring rain and mud, a child’s fear of the dark, thinking so many questions about your existence as you stare at the vast expanse of never-ending ocean, the silence of three a.m., danse macabre by camille saint-saens playing on a record in an empty house, the possibility of aliens and the weird feeling it gives you that you can’t explain, unexplainable phenomena, strange lights in the sky in the dead of night, ouija boards and urban legends.
JACK KEROUAC. the brisk pine air of being on a mountain, travels without a destination, those nights where you’re missing three hours of memory, screaming to a lifeless desert about how you’re so alive, coffee shops late at night, chocobo rides at night spent speeding and laughing in the dark, naps spent in the sun, novels highlighted and underlined with notes and epiphanies in the margins, the way uncertainty sits on the shoulders, ignoring flaws and loving life, wind through hair, depression as fog in the brain, impossible ideals, a quiet sunrise, walks alone, when you think about trying to discover all the secrets to the universe, dazzling people, open lands stretching out into infinity, falling in love with being alive.
EDGAR ALLAN POE. the ocean’s horizon inseparable from fog, hollow bones, a preserved heart held in hands, twinkling stars above an old graveyard, the way everything turns to dust, silent black birds with eyes full of wisdom, self-inflicted flames, perfection depicted as a rotting corpse, death as bricks in the heart, lips barely brushing against each other, glassy glazed eyes, biting into a lemon, heart-shaped bruises, rotting flowers on a grave, dried blood and spilled liquor, the hush of dusk when it begins raining, the intimacy of a secret.

[REVAMP SOON]
Hello and welcome to my page of OCs! Call me Dial (or Fugo if we're close). This page is meant to be a hub for all my FFXIV shenanigans, but especially characters and their stories.
Be warned that I don't really tag many CWs as my characters are full of them, so expect occasional slurs, sexual references, drug and alcohol mention and all that stuff.
Below the cut you will find some of my characters and very brief surface-level profiles on them. If you'd like to know more you can click on their name to see their personal tag or shoot me an ask/message with a question or an RP proposal!
If you just want to see my art/screenshots without the reblogs, you can see the #dial-does-images tag.

Jah'to "Jack" Rhydir [Coeurl], a Twelveswood born and raised Keeper, a younger twin. He left home early due to family conflict and quickly adapted into the life of a robber and criminal otherwise. Fate eventually brought him to meeting the love of his life through the most curious of circumstances. Now, he is on the path of recovery as a co-owner of a small apothecary with a side-hobby of raising chocobos. [old outdated carrd]

Vivienaix Vaitabeois [Coeurl] is a down-on-his-luck musician, chased out of his noble family for disobedience. Not prepared to face the broad society, he'd spent over a decade as a shut-in in a small apartment in Ul'dah, reading books, tending to his plants and writing music only for his own ears to hear. Eventually, the finances his family graced him with ran dry and in his search for a job he could do with his minimal skills he found himself back in Ishgard, forming a very complicated relationship with his new boss.
Tumblr media
Cillien Cedrepierre [Mateus], a mysterious Duskwight of a million faces, who claims to have grown up in a poor family in some remote Twelveswood village. Although depending on who you ask, you may hear a completely different story of his origins, making one wonder if Cillien is even his real name. He's got a perfect mask up his sleeve for any person and situation, yet one question remains: does he himself still remember what he truly looks like? [carrd]

A'nanas Tia [Coeurl] is a self-made, yet genuine doctor of psychotherapy, otherwise known as a mind-mender. With his practice still being quite novel to the mending community, he frequently struggles with having his work be officially recognized or otherwise sponsored. But he doesn't give up, taking willing patients as part of the Stardust Apothecary services and writing books on the matter.
Tumblr media
Rakim "Nile" Ottah [Coeurl], a classic criminal mastermind with a flamboyant and eccentric side to him. A proud son of Dalmasca, who fled to Eorzea with his waning parents and eventually had to survive in the streets of Ul'dah on his own. His strong leadership and skillful manipulation led him to the top of a small gang of robbers, which slowly evolved into a very powerful syndicate under his wing.
Tumblr media
Zachand Greystone Karasu [Coeurl] is the son/daughter of Nile. He isn't the brightest, but her cheerful and innocent attitude often compels people to call her an angel. She isn't opposed to it, always happy to act on the nickname and help a person in need with all she can. ...Which is often quite a lot, since Nile frequently showers him with very hefty allowances and very little regulation to where those allowances go.
Tumblr media
Teppei Shirayuki [Diabolos] is the youngest son of a fairly influential Hingan family. Far from being the family heir with plenty of older siblings, Teppei has grown into quite a spoiled brat. His lack of sense of responsibility led him to causing problems for his parents, who kindly asked him to sail overseas and not stick his nose out for a while as the dust settled. He is only happy for it though, as he is finally completely left to his own devices and also can stay as far away as possible from his despised oldest brother.

JOHN KEATS. the lavender in sunsets, flowers in the rain, sunlight slipping through clouds, lazy summer afternoons, flickering candlelight reflecting off the gold titles of books, fireflies on a cool summer night, being wrapped in fresh bed sheets, the ache of wanting what you can never have, dripping sunlight like gold, loving someone so exquisite, soft lips and soft whispers, fingers through hair, names of lovers carved in trees, broken glass, the insistence of being perpetually dreamy.
