The Yosemite Engine House in #ChesterVermont. The firehouse for Chester Fire District #2 was built in 1879, and is distinctive for its two towers. The north tower which is taller was used to dry hoses, and the south tower served as a belfry. The eye-catching #firehouse is sandwiched between the Williams River and Vermont 103 (Depot Street) just around the corner from the #ChesterDepot. It's engine doors were expanded in the 1930's to make way for motorized #firetrucks which replaced its horse drawn carriages. . The #ChesterDepot in Chester, Vermont. The Rutland & Burlington railroad connected the Connecticut River Valley at Bellows Falls to Lake Champlain at Burlington and passed through Chester for the first time in 1849. The first station burned down in 1871, and was replaced by this station in the 1890's. . A “Standing” or “Citizen” soldier #CivilWar Monument- Chester, Vermont. In the 1860s and 70s several sculptors including Carl Conrad & #MartinMilmore began working on war memorials focusing on the average soldier who went off to fight. Mostly contemplative, weapon down at their side. As you can see on the inscription here, most common soldiers were buried on, or near the battlegrounds where they fell and their bodies never returned home (commissioned officers might be the exception).
