Legacy and Reflection: The Cenotaph, the Napoleon Chair, and the Intersection of History and Design
Sir Edwin Lutyens' Cenotaph stands as a poignant symbol of remembrance and sacrifice, honouring the fallen of the World Wars and subsequent conflicts. Its design, simple yet powerful, has indeed become a model for cenotaphs worldwide, encapsulating the solemnity and reverence owed to those who gave their lives in service.
The juxtaposition of the Cenotaph with the Napoleon chair is intriguing, highlighting both the architectural legacy and the complexities of history. Lutyens' design prowess extended beyond memorials to include furniture, with the Napoleon chair standing out as a timeless classic known for its comfort and elegance.
In view of Napoleon Bonaparte and the association with despotism offers a thought-provoking parallel. Indeed, historical figures like Napoleon remind us of the duality inherent in leadership – the capacity for greatness alongside the potential for tyranny. Lutyens' willingness to seat an emperor, even one as controversial as Napoleon, underscores the architect's pragmatic approach and his recognition of the multifaceted nature of history.
Architecture, like any art form, reflects the ethos of its time and the aspirations of its creators. The works of architects like Ledoux and Boullee, responding to the political climate of their era, offer valuable insights into the intersection of power, ideology, and design.
In contemplating these connections, we are reminded of the importance of understanding history in all its complexity, recognizing both the achievements and the shortcomings of past leaders and their legacies. And through monuments like the Cenotaph and the enduring appeal of designs like the Napoleon chair, we find avenues for reflection, commemoration, and perhaps even reconciliation with the past.

1 Peter Corlett & Darien Pullen Winged Victory (2015) bronze 4 metres
photo: optikes
2 Gilbert Doble  (1919)
photographer unknown
A  innerwest.nsw.gov.au      The original Winged Victory, commissioned by Council, was created by Marrickville sculptor Gilbert Doble in 1919 as a World War I memorial. In 2008 safety concerns were raised about the condition of the statue and the work was decommissioned and is now a focal point in the World War I Galleries at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. This work is the largest known bronze casting memorial in Australia standing over four metres tall and is described by the Australia War Memorial as ‘one of the most significant WWI monuments in Australia.
The new Winged Victory sculpture that can be seen at the front of Marrickville Town Hall was manufactured by Meridian – a Melbourne-based fine art foundry – to a design by artists Peter Corlett and Darien Pullen. The figure of Nike, the goddess of victory, holds a laurel wreath of peace in one hand and a raised sword in the other. In the new interpretation, the sword was lowered in a gesture of peace. Her downturned eyes recognise the great sacrifices made by the local community during World War I.
The Winged Victory is the emblem of the Marrickville Heritage Society.
B Anne-Maree Whitaker (2006)       From Marrickville municipality about 3000 men volunteered, representing 15 percent of the male population. More than 400 were killed in the fighting.Following the war the Soldiers’ Patriotic Fund collected money for a war memorial, and chose local sculptor Gilbert Doble to design it.
C   smh.com.au  (2015)              Nearly a century since a Winged Victory statue commemorating the suburb's war dead was first unveiled outside Marrickville Town Hall, a re-imagined version was lowered into the same spot on Wednesday. The four-metre bronze-cast was lifted on to its plinth.Though of the same dimensions, the new statue subtly reworks and pacifies the previous, crumbling war memorial removed in 2009. That Winged Victory was first unveiled before a crowd of 15,000 in 1919.The statue represents Nike, the winged Greek goddess of victory, and commemorates more than 450 Marrickville residents who died in World War I.In the original, Nike's sword was raised, though her eyes were cast downward, in a pose intended to evoke a mix of sorrow for the fallen but also proud satisfaction with the war's ultimate result. Its remains are today on display at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. In the new interpretation, Nike's sword is at rest."I was chasing an image of peace and sacrifice," said Victorian sculptor Darien Pullen. Mr Pullen said he sought to remain faithful to the artistic feel of the 1919 version while altering its "heroic pose". Mr Pullen and assistant Andrew Poppleton spent 12 months building the statue, which was moulded from clay. The statue will be unveiled officially on  Sunday morning following a march to the Town Hall marking the centenary of the Gallipoli landing. Mr Pullen and representatives from the War Memorial and Art Gallery will appear at the Town Hall on Monday, April 20, from 6.30pm-9pm to discuss the relationship between the old and new versions of the sculpture.
