No idea how these pictures are gonna be rotated when I hit ‘Post’, that’s gonna be a revelation for all of us... but anyway! Went to visit an old Roman villa today with my sister and her kids. I knew the mosaics were supposed to be good, but I was still surprised at just how good they were.

A latest discovery is rewriting our understanding of Britain's Dark Ages. Confirmation of a 5th century Roman mosaic in England changes the view of a sudden collapse of Britannia’s society after the fall of the Roman Empire.
The Chedworth Roman Villa in England is at the heart of this breakthrough. Radiocarbon dating of a stunning mosaic found here reveals it dates back to the mid-5th century, long after the fall of Rome in 410 AD! This challenges the long-held belief that Europe plunged into a cultural and intellectual decline following Rome's collapse.

For Mosaic Monday, one of my favorite works is this unique depiction of Cupid as Winter, from the Chedworth Villa in Britain:
Tumblr media
It shows an impish looking Cupid, bundled up in a Celtic hooded garment called the "birrus". His cloak flies behind Him in place of wings, as He darts off to some unknown mischief.
Note the Late Roman mosaic patterns here that would later develop into Medieval "Celtic knotwork".
Part of what draws me so much to this mosaic is its rare depiction of Celtic clothing, and the way Cupid got integrated into the local culture.
People often conceptualize a hard break between polytheist Antiquity and Christian Medieval times, or between "Roman" and "Celtic" cultures. But this art from Sub-Roman Britain (4th to 5th C.) challenges that dichotomy, showing a fascinating transition between the two, and a fusion of cultures and styles that would foreshadow Medieval Insular art.
I've been wanting to take a stab at pixel art, and I thought the adorable Cupid here looked almost straight out of an old video game like Zelda or something. I also figured, "what is a mosaic, but physical pixel art?" So I did my best to recreate it in pixel form!
I learned pretty quickly there are actually a lot of differences between mosaic and pixel art (lol), and I'm sure this could be improved on in a lot of ways, but it was a fun project anyways:

GBN – Britain’s News Channel By George Bunn January 17, 2024 New archaeological research has found that the impact of the Roman Empire lasted much longer than scientists thought. Mystery of Chedworth's 1,800-year-old Roman glass shard solved
Tumblr media
A fragment from a Roman bottle so exceptionally rare that it has taken glass experts from around the world two years to conclusively identify it has been discovered thousands of miles from where it was made.
The discovery at Chedworth Roman Villa in Gloucestershire of the small shard of patterned green glass, part of an 1,800-year-old fish bottle, has astonished archaeologists.
Nothing like it has ever been found in Britain. It would have been made in an area around the Black Sea in what is now Ukraine and was possibly used to hold exotic perfume.
For it to travel all the way from the Black Sea to the Cotswolds sheds new light on the wealth and influence of the people who occupied Chedworth, a National Trust property regarded as one of the grandest Roman villas in Britain. Read more.

Roman Portable Shrine, Chedworth Roman Villa, Gloucestershire
One of several small altars believed to be deliberately portable, and so able to travel with individuals or families, The god is believed to represent Mars Lenus, a deity who was a Roman and Celtic amalgamation. The recessed dots would have been filled with colour, marking out the eyes, nipples, navel and genitalia.

Chedworth Roman Villa
Gloucestershire, England
The Roman Military Research Society are heading back to Chedworth Roman Villa in the Cotswolds next weekend! Every year they run a summer re-enactment event demonstrating battle tactics and running activities, among the mosaics and existing exhibits available in the ruins of a once-luxurious Roman villa.
Read more about the site’s history and what you need to know about visiting it here: http://www.onemoresteptravel.com/chedworth-roman-villa-cotswolds/
It’s worth a visit as an off the beaten path historical site even if you can’t head there next weekend. Also before you go check out the National Trust website to see if there are any archaeological excavations going on that you can watch!
