O klątwie Westcote mówiło się od wieków: hiszpańscy inkwizytorzy mieli zwrócić na siebie uwagę przedwiecznego zła, które miało zawładnąć ich czynami, uczuciami i myślami. Przeciwstawili się złemu duchowi i, zakląwszy go w ołowianej urnie, ukryli go głęboko pod wyspą Westcote. Do ukrytego skarbu miała prowadzić tajemnicza kostka, której sześć części ukryto w różnych miejscach, u różnych osób, a Jorge Martinez wraz z załogą miał niedługo potem zaginąć w niewyjaśnionych okolicznościach.
Przez następne dziesięciolecia fragmentów kostki szukały dziesiątki ludzi, których, wedle wierzeń, miało połączyć przedwieczne zło. Braterstwo Uroborosa, Bractwo Uroborosa, a potem kolejne pokolenia Domu Uroborosa. Nikomu nie udało się znaleźć wszystkich fragmentów, w którymś momencie każde z ugrupowań znikało bez śladu tak jak inkwizytorzy.
Do czasu.

The House of Ouroboros was the first secret society at Langdons' University in Westcote. The origins of this secret society date back to 1675, when five friares formed the Fraternity of Ouroboros, which dealt with paranormal mysteries, occultism and studied theories of the Doomsday. They found part of a golden cube that served as the key to a treasure hidden by the Spanish Inquisition somewhere under Westcote. The fraternity hid it because of the unusual behavior of the members of fraternity somewhere in an old cathedral on the fringe of the city. For decades, members of The House of Ouroboros have tried to find the missing pieces of the cube, but they have always missed as well before finding all of them.
Cassidy van Roekel — future prosecutor.
Arno Dorian — future historian.
Ned Wynert — future sociologist.
Alice Liddell — future psychologist.
Jacob Frye — future senior information specialist.
Five members, paranormal activities in the city, Mystery of the Westcote's Curse and upcoming End of the World.

She entered the room where two corpses lay. Children's room. Girls ten and twelve years old. Both with their throats slit, and their mouths taped shut. Their parents were in the next room. Also murdered — in exactly the same way as their daughters. The bodies slowly began to decompose; it was the stench of decaying tissue that made the neighbors aware that something had happened — and the fact that they didn't go out for daily walks in the neighborhood playground.
Aside from the dead bodies, there was one other thing that wasn't right. There were three beds in the room — one child, the youngest boy, was nowhere to be found. His body wasn't there either, so the killer must have kidnapped him.
She swung her jacket over her shoulder and walked around to examine the girls' bodies more closely. The murderer did not even try to hide their crime. They left the bodies as they were. They didn't drag them out of the apartment, didn't cover them with a duvet, didn't douse them with acid to make them impossible to recognize. They didn't remove the metallic tape from their mouth, they didn't untie their bound ankles and wrists.
They could do anything. But they did absolutely nothing.
No one walks into a locked house just like that. Especially for an apartment on the fourth floor. They must have had a key, so it must be someone of the family. Maybe they got into a conflict and it was revenge. But why would they spare an eight-year-old. Why did they kidnap him instead of killing him?
As far as she knew, the family did not employ any nanny or housekeeper. They couldn't afford it.
“Mrs. van Roekel,” one of the technicians said.
The woman turned to him and waved her red hair to brush it from her face.
"We found something," he said, and the trainee followed him.
There was an unusual sign in the bathroom above the tub. It was absolutely not a pentacle. This one consisted of a five-pointed star in a circle. It looked more like a goat's head. But it had nothing to do with Satan worship. She would surely know.
She put on the gloves that the technician had given her and touched the goo that had been used to make the painting. Blood. Probably victims.
“Collect samples and compare them with the DNA of the murdered. I'm going to check out the living room”.
He nodded, and the woman stepped out of the bathroom and surveyed the living room. She opened all the cupboards and chests of drawers in search of anything that might lead them to the murderer. But all she found was a drawer with tape recordings. Unusual, considering those hadn't been used for at least fifteen years. She was more expecting files on the computer. Or at least CDs.
She looked at them carefully. A Walk in the Mountains 2008, Hare and Hounds 1987, Birthday 2005, A Bedtime Story 2020.
“Just like Samara Morgan.” She heard a voice behind her and flinched.
Prosecutor Stern, her patron, was behind her.
“I'm going to take these tapes home and run through them. They may be hiding something interesting, maybe we'll learn something more”.
“That's what investigators are for.”
“Investigators are idiots.” She grimaced, and Stern looked at her, raising an eyebrow. “Especially in this town”.
Someone entered the apartment. Several voices were heard. Stern sighed and nodded.
“Just hide them so that no one will notice,” he murmured to her, and van Roekel turned towards the entrance to the living room, where stood a dark-haired girl, a tall, long-haired brunette, next to him another, slightly shorter, and a boy, shorter than the girl who she came with them.
“V-vampire!” shouted in unison the shorter and shortest of the men, hiding behind the girl.
The woman raised an eyebrow and turned her whole body around. She smiled at the dark haired girl.
Shit, she's changed since last class.
“She's not a vampire, you cowards.” She shook her head. “She's my former tutor; Cassidy van Roekel.”
They both leaned out from behind her and breathed a sigh of relief.
“Sure. Non-vampire.”
“Alice, will you introduce us?”
“Of course.” She pointed to the man in the black coat and blue turtleneck. “Arno Dorian.” She then pointed to a boy in a red cap and denim jacket with a backpack on his back. “Jacob Frye.” At the very end, she placed her hand on the head of the boy in the white shirt and black sweater with an orchid print. “And this is Ned Wynert.”
Cassidy put her hand in her trouser pocket and nodded.
“What brings you here, kids?”
“Ouroboros,” replied Arno.
Cassidy looked at Stern and nodded for him to leave them. When he left, she put the recordings in a paper bag and tucked it into her purse.
She wiped her hands and told them to follow her. She showed them the bodies of the parents first to prepare them for the children's bodies. Then they entered the children's room. She saw the pallor on their faces as they saw the children with their throats slit.
“Where's the third child?” Arno said, and Cassidy shrugged.
“He was kidnapped and now someone is holding him. Or murdered. We'll find out in the near future.”
“What does it mean?” Jacob asked, and Cassidy motioned for them to follow.
“Corpses, unlike people, have a way of finding each other.”
She opened the bathroom door for them, where forensic scientists were collecting blood samples from a mark on the wall. Jacob and Ned went dumb again. Alice's mouth widened and Arno drew back.
“A pentagram?”
Cassidy looked at Arno indignantly.
“Even if, it's a pentacle. And no, it's neither one nor the other.”
“I'll look for something on that mark.” He pulled out his phone and took a picture of it.
He zoomed in on the photo and studied the details. He nodded and put the phone back in his pocket.
“I'll let you know if I find anything.”

It was far longer than I thought before writing it XD Here we have a first scene in the first chapter of The House of Ouroboros. I hope you enjoyed it.
