Monochrome: Shadows and Reflections
My approach to photography has generally been pretty traditional. My photos are usually realistic, no frills or special effects except perhaps a little color saturation, which I’ve loved since the old-school film days when I used Velvia slide film and underexposed half a stop to get that rich kind of color. Reflections on the McCarthy Road But for this week’s Lens-Artists Photo Challenge, Patti…

So I'm still going through the various trails in my local Washington State Parks, seeing how long it takes me to hike each one without getting distracting and taking pictures of things every five feet so that I can give my guided nature tour participants better estimates of how long each trail might take. I haven't managed to NOT get distracted by cool things along the way at least a few times, but I can make it more than twenty feet before I stop and look.
Yesterday I spent the afternoon on the Discovery Trail section that goes from Ilwaco to Beard's Hollow at Cape Disappointment. There are a few "make sure you stretch first" hills, but the whole trail is either paved, boardwalk, or fairly even gravel and other natural surfaces, so I was able to make good time this time around. Technically speaking the trail begins in Ilwaco proper at the docks, but I began timing myself from the trailhead up the hill where you get into the woods. And since I started at Beard's Hollow I was going backwards (sort of), though I did walk into Ilwaco and grab a snack at Old Town Trading Post (how many hikes let you visit a cute little cafe partway through?)
I'm just about done timing trails at Cape D, other than the few around the visitor center. Leadbetter's going to be a challenge because this time of year almost all the trails have a flooded section (sometimes up to four feet deep!), and then as soon as they dry out it becomes Mosquito Season. July-early October is usually the best time for Leadbetter, though I have gone as late as November in drier years. I might just have to wait to time those, but that's okay. I'm working on adding other trails to my roster.
BTW, I am officially open for guided nature tours! The WA State Parks here are just the ones that I already have permits for, especially good for folks who arrive in the Columbia-Pacific region for a weekend and want same-day (or next-day-or-two, depending on my schedule) experiences. But I am open for booking throughout the Pacific Northwest; I just need enough lead-up time to secure any necessary permits and make other preparations. i was reading the exchange between u and homesick anon and i felt that same feeling so deeply too.
i’m in new york city for school and when i first came here, the adjustment was so difficult, mainly bc of how different the landscape was. nyc is a monstrous metropolis that constantly floods u with human noise, smell, and lights. there’s no reprieve from it. no place to just—get away and breathe. not even in central park.
there’s a beautiful silence to the pnw that’s impossible to explain. it is so hard to explain to my city friends why i just get overwhelmed and desperately homesick.
your blog has kept me sane; the pictures and videos of trees and ferns and the coast and rivers and roads had let me revisit childhood memories camping at cape disappointment and dream of future summer hikes on mount tahoma.
i really can’t thank you enough. 💚🤍💙
I relate so much, friend. In my first year of college in the Midwest, I immediately bonded with another fellow PNWer and we endured together in a high state of misery. We used to drag ourselves down to the Mississippi to this slight rise (perhaps 7 feet high?) overlooking that brown river and scraggly trees and we’d kinda just… try to pretend that bump of topography could remind us of mountains. I kinda still hate deciduous trees as a result (or at least majority deciduous landscapes).
There are plenty of people who don’t feel any particular attachment to where they’re from. It’s probably easier to be them, in a lot of ways. And there are people who can move to the PNW and be wretchedly homesick for places that make the rest of us depressed. They’re valid, of course, because “home” is an individual experience. But you’re lucky enough to be from one of the most beautiful places in the world and to love it at its true value. It’ll always be there for you. And everyone who’s from here or who has chosen it as their adopted home will understand what you’re feeling.
But, if you are open to hearing my one regret from my time away from the PNW… be as open as you can to finding out what locals love about where they’re from. Pretend you’re an anthropologist. Pretend you’re in a romance novel with an arranged marriage trope that starts with both parties hating each other and ends with lessons about learning to love. I’m not suggesting you’ll actually fall in love with NYC, but I do want to suggest that it’s never a waste of time to explore where you are as much as possible. At best, you’ll find some things to truly love that’ll help mediate the bad stuff. At worst, you’ll have amusing material for an entire “I hate NY” party when you move back home.
But no matter how far you roam or how long you’re kept away, home will always be here for you. Hang in there. And don’t hesitate to send a message if you’re feeling homesick 💙🌲💚

North Head Lighthouse
Tumblr media
North Head Lighthouse is an active aid to navigation overlooking the Pacific Ocean from North Head, two miles north of Cape Disappointment in the state of Washington.
Tumblr media
It was constructed in 1897 when sailors complained that the nearby (and somewhat aptly named) Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, installed in 1856, was obscured to ships approaching from the north. The lens for the Cape Disappointment light was transferred over to the North Head light a year later when it was first lit.
Tumblr media
North Head is one of the windiest places in the United States, with wind velocities in excess of 100 mph being frequently measured. In 1902 the U.S. Weather Bureau built a station on North Head in order to observe the phenomenon. On January 29, 1921, winds were clocked at 126 mph before the measuring instrument blew away. The buildings where later demolished (not from weather) in 1955.
Tumblr media
North Head Lighthouse was automated in 1961 and, after a period of abandonment, was restored by the Coast Guard in 1984 to be open to the public for Cape Disappointment National Park. North Head currently stands as the most intact light station in the Pacific Northwest. All of its original buildings remaining standing, including the tower, two oil houses, two residences, a barn, chicken coop, and garages.

Explore Long Beach Peninsula: a Washington State gem
Don’t be fooled by the name. I guarantee there’s nothing disappointing about Cape Disappointment State Park. This glorious swath of land is a paradise of lighthouses atop windswept cliffs, breathtaking views, rugged beaches to explore, old-growth forests to wander and plenty of colorful Northwest history. Cape Disappointment is located about 4.5 hours from Seattle and 2.5 hours from Portland on…

Day 7 - Cape Disappointment to Astoria, Oregon
End of the first week, start of a new state. Woke up at around 6:30 to a thick fog. After a quick bathroom break, not five minutes later it had cleared up. Expecting that to be a recurring morning pattern for a bit.
Crossing from Washington to Astoria involves going over the Columbia River. The Columbia River has the largest mouth to the ocean of any river in the USA, and apparently only of the largest in the world. That means a long bridge crossing over the Astoria-Megler Bridge. Nearly 7km long. It has a bit of a reputation for cycles as potentially harrowing. Little shoulder, fast cars, lots of traffic, and a big climb near the end.
Josh had heard the same about the bridge, so we decided to try to leave camp early and cycle together to hopefully cross the bridge at a quieter time. I think that worked out well, as it wasn't nearly as bad as some make it out to be. The climb was similar to Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver which I've done a few times, and the traffic was light and respectful.
The bike ride to the bridge was nice, too. Through a couple small towns, and near some historic fort areas. But we mostly just flew by them as we were on a mission.
Across the bridge we parted ways, he's continuing on down the coast, and I'm having a rest day of sorts in Astoria.
I spent time exploring the downtown area of Astoria, grabbed some late breakfast, and then decided to bike up to Astoria Column. I may have had better ideas in my life, it's quite a climb on a bike. But I saved $5 in parking! And the view from the top was incredible. Once up there, you can climb up the 150 or so stairs to the top of the column for an epic view. A little daunting at the top if you are scared of heights!
Biked down from the viewpoint to a park to dry out my tent, then on to the motel for the night to do some laundry, cleaning, etc.
The motel is up on a crest, so another climb on my rest day, but seems to be worth it. Will definitely sleep well tonight, and looking forward to hitting the coast tomorrow!

Now that I've got permits to lead guided nature tours in the WA State Parks in my area, I've been going out and timing how long it takes me to hike each trail without getting distracted along the way so I have a baseline time estimate to give clients. This is more difficult than anticipated, because I hadn't realized just how often I stop because "Oh wow, look at this cool bug!" or "This liverwort needs to go on iNaturalist!" or "The lighting here is absolutely perfect and I HAVE to take a picture!" I mostly managed to stay on task today as I hiked the North Head Trail at Cape Disappointment, but I couldn't resist getting in a few shots and iNaturalist observations along the way.
I figure that stopping and looking at cool stuff is going to be a big part of these tours, but I suppose it's always possible I'll get someone who really just wants to speedwalk a few miles through pretty scenery, with my (possibly literally) running commentary along the way.
