Round 4 [Semifinals]: Webby Vanderquack [Ducktales 2017] vs. Lilo Pelekai [Lilo and Stitch] vs. Candace Flynn [Phineas and Ferb]
webby vanderquack was practically raised to be a weirdgirl- she didn't leave her home until she was a preteen and knew almost zero social rules when she did. she summons ghosts and demons for fun at sleepovers, knows several different ways to kill you, climbs walls like a spider, and may have been grown in a lab [inconclusive]. with the worst track record out of these three thus far, can she overcome the odds to reach the weirdgirl finals?
i don't think i need to say too much about lilo pelekai considering how well she's done in the competition thus far, but i will regardless. we all know lilo. she's the iconic little autistic girl of our childhoods- studying voodoo to punish her 'friends', not understanding many social conventions, and theorizing that her sister's manager is secretly a vampire. will she overcome her competition once again?
candace flynn may seem like a normal teenage girl, but you'd be highly mistaken. while being high-strung can easily be attributed to her youth, her extreme paranoia and compulsions, as well as the zebra that calls her kevin, were strong contenders for why i chose to include her in the bracket. the universe may be against her, but does she have the weirdness that it takes to go all the way to the finals?

Goodreads Choice Awards but the nominees are just the books I've personally shelved
I have a lot of thoughts about the options as they exist (mostly not that bad, except when it comes to the total elimination of children's literature, about which I am furious), but per usual I can't really articulate them in a coherent way SO I sorted my shelves by publication date, ignored the GCA requirement of a minimum 3.5 average rating, and am doing this instead.
[update: oops this did not turn out coherent either. but it got typed!]
Important Reminder: These are not all books I consider equal contenders for "best." I simply wanted to highlight every possible option I actually knew about and have read or am interested in reading.
YA
After the Sirens - Sharon Farrell
Begin Again - Emma Lord (forgot to add this one before)
The Brothers Hawthorne - Jennifer Lynn Barnes (actual nominee and I'm gonna vote for it even though it seems like it may be more of a filler book. The Davenports is the only other official nom to intrigue me, and its lower average rating + hideous cartoon cover isn't enough to flip me unread so sorry, we're going Basic Popularity Contest Pick)
Cleaning Up - Leanne Lieberman
Five Survive - Holly Jackson (definitely not a winner)
Gather - Kenneth M. Cadow (edit: National Book Award finalist?? like with the adult fiction??)
Good as Gold -- Candace Buford (definite contender for fave so far)
Holly Horror - Michelle Jabès Corpora
The Island - Natasha Preston (lol. lmao even. but ridiculous fun)
The Lake House - Sarah Beth Durst
A Long Stretch of Bad Days - Mindy McGinnis
The Renaissance of Gwen Hathaway - Ashley Schumacher (here on author loyalty only)
Three Rivers - Sarah Stusek (THAT'S RIGHT. HER.)
Summer Rental - Rektok Ross (why am I this aware of brand-new ya horror??) (because I love horror and it's usually better paced and spookier and less shock-gory than the adult brand? fair)
YA FANTASY / SCI FI
Dream to Me - Megan Paasch (I think it would go here, anyway. but maybe it's just regular YA)
The Eternal Ones - Namina Forna (I gotta remember this series exists)
FANTASY
Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries -- winner winner pick!! (no like officially)
Starling House - Alix E. Harrow (though this is a close second, and honestly, if they weren't both actual nominees I'd think The Unmaking of June Farrow has some potential intrigue)
ROMANCE
Hazel Fine Sings Along - Katie Wicks (no comment on its Wattpad origin. I didn't notice until just now. have not read it.)
Famous For A Living - Melissa Ferguson (popular enough for Once Upon a Book Club! but not for for an official nom, despite my hopes, in this fiercely competitive category. boooo)
Out On a Limb - Hannah Bonam-Young (damn I actually saw this one making rounds on BookTube, thought it might be here)
Something Wild & Wonderful - Anita Kelly (can't believe there's actually a queer romance I want to see show up and it doesn't)
(Bonus: legit nominees I am considering for validity include Happy Place; Yours Truly - I really need to figure out if Emily Henry and Abby Jimenez are in my wheelhouse or not - and Hello Stranger, though as much as I like Katherine Center this one does not call to me)
FICTION
This Bird Has Flown - Susanna Hoffs (might also have been under romance if picked for the actual GCA? feels more mainstream than that but idk. anyway HATERS 2 THE LEFT.)
^ also my pick for debut
The Lost Manuscript - Mollie Rushmeyer (dunno which category this would officially go in either. probably romance? maybe mystery? but it's got a lot more plot than the average romance)
HISTORICAL FICTION
The Echo of Old Books - Barbara Davis (holy crap this one's actually in the nominations?! Instant vote. Almost disappointing because there are some other candidates I would have felt fine voting for to block the worse ones, but this is the only one on my acute TBR. If I don't give at least 4 stars I will be shocked)
MYSTERY/THRILLER
Forgotten Trail - Claire Kells
The Hike - Lucy Clarke
The Only One Left - Riley Sager
Homecoming - Kate Morton (crisis alert! the latter two are both official nominees and I am equally interested in both/both have equally good track records with me) (probs. gonna vote Kate on the principle of female solidarity. even though this is really stretching the definition of "mystery")
HORROR
A Haunting on the Hill - Elizabeth Hand
(How To Sell a Haunted House is a hard maybe but also the only one I think I'd even consider trying from the official noms)
MEMOIR
Paris: The Memoir - Paris Hilton
The Woman in Me - Britney Spears
Grimoire Girl - Hilarie Burton Morgan
Tell Me Everything - Minka Kelly
If You Would Have Told Me - John Stamos
Goodbye to Clocks Ticking - Joseph Monninger (forgot I just stumbled upon this one recently! it's on my library list but not my GR account)
and one more except GCA put it in a different category hang on
Three of these - not Burton's, alas - are actually nominees. Britney is gonna win but not without a fight from me. Do I go with Paris, whose memoir impressed me even though I still don't care much for her as a person, or Minka, whose memoir I haven't read but whose reviews sound excellent and whom I like more?
HUMOR
Being Henry - Henry Winkler (there is absolutely no reason for this not to be nominated in memoir btw. I hope it wins Humor because nothing else appeals in that category and I have multiple vendettas (SAMANTHA IRBY), but it would be as misplaced a win as the Office Ladies book was last year. fully deserving of an award! actually the best of the given nominees! but also like an adult beating a bunch of children in a footrace.)
MIDDLE GRADE
(no longer a GCA category but it fudgin' should be)
Just Gus - McCall Hoyle
Falling Out of Time - Margaret Peterson Haddix (actually glad I don't have to choose between these two because like. dogs - but also boy MC - or author loyalty ft. sequel to my childhood fave??)
Rosie Frost and the Falcon Queen - Geri Halliwell The Spice Girl (no. 😔) (and yet it is still on my shelf)
I have no strong opinions for any categories I skipped.

What’s their personal philosophy?  Do they even have one?
For much of the earlier portion of her life, Lucy’s motto would be “do unto others and you would have them do unto you”. Up until about the time Rakepick shows up, and Ben’s secret-keeping, and just the all-around mess that her life becomes when the Vaults come into question, this is what she lives by. After about Year 4? It shifts a bit, focusing her own values and energy towards protecting her loved ones and innocent people from those who would cause harm, and doing whatever necessary to stop them. And after finding Nathan, she begins to include him in the latter.
How do they feel about their status and reputation as the curse-breaker in the school?
Lucy was never one for the spotlight, even as a little kid. She was content for years to simply look up to her older brother in his successes, and then later to help her parents with her baby brother, showering him with love and attention. Actively searching for the Vaults, and subsequently breaking the curses within, was only part of her plan to try and find some closure as to her brother’s disappearance (something she has convinced herself he was merely a victim of and not an active participant, to save herself grief of her brother not being what she thought). She doesn’t like having so many eyes on her, especially for something she knows is dangerous and putting herself and her friends in harm’s way. But every time she tries to back out and leave it be, she gets dragged back in.
Did they get sorted into the Hogwarts House they expected to?  Did the Sorting Hat have any problems sorting them?  Or did it not even have to touch their head?
Before Nathan’s disappearance, she would have loved to consider herself lucky enough to be a witch, let alone be sorted into her brother’s house. After his disappearance, however, she had mixed feelings about the idea of sharing his crest and colors, and possibly having more eyes on her than before. Her values lined up differently than his, however, and the Sorting Hat gave her an out in the form of Hufflepuff house. She was still a little disappointed by being so far from her brother’s life there, but years later, she’d swear up and down that being put in the house of fairness, honesty, and loyalty is where she truly belonged.
What’s their personal style?
Lucy wears a lot of early Autumn colors, usually. Lots of oranges, yellows, browns, and olive greens are kind of signature to her style. She typically wears things that make her feel cute and kind of kid-like, so over-large sweaters with skirts or overall shorts and dresses with print tops (floral or stripes, typically). She usually pairs both with comfortable boots and long socks. She wears her hair down most of the time, except when actively exploring the Vaults and when studying for final exams. When it gets cold, she’ll sometimes “borrow” sweaters from her friends to stay warm (usually Bill and Barnaby).
What are their coping strategies for dealing with everything (the Vaults, Jacob, etc.), if they have any?
Lucy has terrible coping mechanisms for her problems, unfortunately. She convinced herself early on that her brother had probably been killed by the Cursed Vaults while trying to help protect others from the curses, and is thus even more broken up when she eventually does find him and sees what kind of person he’s really become. She tries at the start of every year to ignore the signs of another Vault opening, just trying to live a normal, Hogwarts-student life, only to be dragged into it when people have already been attacked or hurt. After the incident with the dragon and Rakepick, she tries to close herself off, thinking it’s because they’re so close to her that her friends keep getting hurt. It doesn’t work, and her friends end up finding her and hugging her as she cries about everything that seems to go wrong with her life.
What electives do they take throughout their time at Hogwarts?
If she could, she would take every class available because it was so hard to choose just a few! In the end, however, she settled on Care of Magical Creatures, Divination, and Ancient Runes, because Alchemy was only for 7th years, and Arithmancy was “just magic math”. Muggle Studies was almost chosen instead of Divination, but Luc decided she wanted something a little more challenging. (She didn’t realize her patience was what would be tested lol).
Are they in any clubs or extracurricular activities?  What about Quidditch?
It’s really hard to find time to do extracurriculars when you’re trying to protect people from being frozen in ice blocks or sleep-walking into an acromantula nest. She did join the Frog Choir after third year, though unfortunately drops out between 5th-6th year to focus on her studies (and the Vaults). She occasionally goes to the music club, though is not an official member. Unfortunately, Lucy may be a decent flyer, but isn’t quite cut out for Quidditch. Besides, she’d rather be in the stands (huddled and warm) while watching her friends play instead. Sometimes she’ll help Madame Pomfrey with healing students in the Hospital Wing, but the smell of the potions and medicines reminds her of the doctor’s office, so she wouldn’t ever do it for a living.
How studious are they?  What kind of studying strategies do they use?  Do they have any study groups with their friends?
Lucy is a stickler for good note-taking, bringing a bunch of spiral notebooks and colored gel pens and highlighters with her every year to take “proper” notes to share with her friends during their weekly study sessions. She and Rowan usually lead for most classes, though Penny takes charge for Potions, Ben (and Rowan and Bill, sometimes) lead for Charms, and Charlie and Barnaby for Care of Magical Creatures. Lucy, Rowan, and Bill sometimes help some of the younger students set up study groups as well, and often let the younger Weasley siblings and Cedric join their sessions, too. Liz doesn’t always study with them, but will when she needs to, Tulip and Tonks only show up when forced or bribed, and Skye was wrangled into coming once, but got everyone off task getting into a trash-talk showdown with Andre over the Gryffindor v. Ravenclaw game the following day; everyone else either has a different group to study with or refuses to do so entirely.
How willing are they when it comes to breaking school rules?
Lucy hates getting in trouble, since it’s being put under a spotlight in a more negative context for her. The first three years of school, she tries whatever she can to avoid breaking the rules when possible. After the Fear Vault is closed, however, she starts loosening up a little bit. She still doesn’t like to break the rules, but she’ll do it with less coercing, and gets even sneakier to get away with it.
Do they hang out with any of their friends over breaks?  If so, which one(s) and what do they do?
Living all the way out in Ireland, just outside of Dublin, it’s a bit harder to get to visit her friends before she heads into London for her school shopping at the end of summer holiday. Charlie and Bill make use of the fireplace to invite her over for dinner a few times during the break, flooing her there and back without much hassle. She makes time to spend with Rowan specifically during the summer, inviting her over to spend a week or so every year, and Rowan inviting her for the same amount at her house right after. She gets an owl (a cooky brown owl that her little brother named Bernard) for her family to send her mail during the year, and uses him herself to keep in touch with the rest of her friends until September rolls around again.
After they graduate, do they fall off the map and keep a low profile?  Or do they continue to exist in the public eye?
After deciding very early on that she didn’t much care for being the center of attention, once she had the opportunity to fade into obscurity, she took it. She eventually married Barnaby and moved with him to Romania, where he and Charlie work together with dragons. Lucy decides a little later on to document some of her childhood, but feeling awkward about writing her own life story down, changes the names and some of the details to instead create a fictional book series for kids. It later gets published under a pseudonym and achieves moderate success in both the muggle and magical worlds.
How does their career path differ from what they thought they’d be doing?  Or does it differ at all?
It took Lucy her entire life to figure out what she wanted to do. At Hogwarts, when asked what career path she wanted to pursue, she was so shocked that she asked if she could “just go back to bed”. She decided to take whatever classes could be most broadly considered for a number of professions, and even then wasn’t quite sure what she wanted to do once she left Hogwarts. She decided to handle her personal life first, cheering her friends on as they found their paths, and then going with Barnaby so he could achieve his dream. It was only later, after beginning to just write things down, that she realized how much she enjoyed doing it.
Do they have any hobbies?  What about any talents or aptitudes?
She loves taking some time to just goof off with her friends, playing Gobstones or getting some Butterbeer at the Three Broomsticks. She’ll spend some gloomy weekends curled up in a big armchair in the library, quietly reading to herself (and later, helping Barnaby with his dyslexia). She’s also a major card shark, winning almost every muggle card game she’s ever played and often tricking her friends into playing with her and losing anything from candy to wizard cards to even money, on occasion. She’s particularly good in Charms class, as well as Astronomy and Ancient Runes.
Do they have any favorite spells?
She likes spells that can used to help others, like Episkey or Protego. She has a certain fondness for Expecto Patronum, of course. She also likes using Lumos, to light up her bed behind the curtains after a bad nightmare.
What’s one thing they did or thought as a child that they later look back and cringe about?
Long after she and Barnaby finally get together, they both end up hearing about the bets their friends placed on their relationship and how lovesick they apparently acted before asking each other out. Tonks and Tulip will sometimes act out their mutual pining at lunch or at the Three Broomsticks, leaving both of them flustered and cringing over just how insufferable they must've been before they realized their feelings were returned. If she could go back and do it over, she might almost be tempted to have just kissed Barnaby at the Celestial Ball and avoided the whole mess. Almost.
If they could travel anywhere at all in the world—money, time, and language not being an issue—where would they go and who would they take with them?
It's a tough choice between some very good options, travelling to historical landmarks across the globe with Rowan, getting tasty food in Paris with Penny, or taking her family for a nice, normal vacation to Disney in the States. But eventually, she'd probably decide on travelling the world looking for various beasts and creatures with Barnaby, and writing about their adventures.
If they’re an Animagus, how easy was becoming one for them?  Were they happy with their Animagus form?  Or did they want it to be something different?
Lucy studied up on being an animagus with Talbott while at Hogwarts, but couldn't bring herself to actually become one until after graduation. She remains an unregistered sparrow animagus even after Voldemort is finally defeated. She would've liked to be maybe some kind of cat, but can't deny that being so small and being able to fly are some great advantages when the second war rolls around.
Do they like what they see in the mirror?
Had it not been for her magical abilities making themselves known as she grew up, she might've gone through all of primary school unnoticed. As it was, kids often ostracized and ridiculed her for being weird and different until she finally went to Hogwarts. Between that and the guilt she carries for everyone that gets hurt by the Vaults, it takes her a very long time to come to terms with herself and her self-worth.
How good are they at taking compliments?
Lucy is pretty decent at taking compliments, so long as it's not a bunch all at one time; she gets anxious when too many people try and talk to her at once. When Barnaby compliments her, though, she gets flustered and stumbles over her words while blushing really bright, almost blocking out her freckles.
How much do they trust their friends?
Lucy trusts those she keeps close to an almost impossible degree. It can sometimes lead her to trouble, such as leaving her vulnerable to pranks by Tonks or Tulip.
Are they pretty self-reliant?  Or do they like to go to their friends for help?
At first, she's much more willing to do things as a group, having her friends' backs as much as they have hers. Later on, however, she begins closing herself off, trying to take on everything herself to avoid her friends getting hurt because of her. It doesn't last very long, however, as they all work better as a team.
Who is their favorite Weasley?  Or can they not choose?
Ginny and Ron are just too cute, from what little she's seen of them. Bill is like another older brother, and she loves him dearly. She and Charlie are great friends, but anything and everything becomes a competition with them, starting with a "who knows more about dragons" contest that she actually won in their 2nd year. They could almost have been considered rivals up until later on in Year 4. Percy is alright, she Guesses, but even she thinks he needs to loosen up a bit. And she spends most of her time trying to just keep the twins separated from Tonks and Tulip, if only to avoid the Apocalypse.
What’s the thing they like least about themselves?
She's a little stuffy about rules, she worries too much, her actions and choices keep putting people in danger, and FFS, she faced a DRAGON and still can't kill one measly little spider??
What’s the thing they like most about themselves?
She cares about her friends and family, she would never go out of her way to betray them or to hurt others. She takes pride in the lives she's helped and saved.
How bad is their temper?  Do they tend to lash out at others or themselves?
Her temper only gets really out of hand when someone she cares about gets hurt. She can usually handle someone hurting her with nothing more than a few years, but attack the people she cares about? That'll be the last thing you ever do.
What’s their biggest regret in life, if they have any?
She blames herself for far too many things. She wishes Ben hadn't been hurt and controlled by Rakepick, she thinks she could've done more to help and support him. She feels like if she had been more observant as a kid, she might've seen something going on with Nathan and could've stopped his disappearance. She's terrified about how the two of them being so involved in the Cursed Vaults with effect Casey as he grows up, and if he'll end up inheriting their legacy or not, if it might get him killed.
What kind of first impression do they tend to leave on others?
Lucy is sweet, doe-eyed, and a little naïve. A pretty face, very smart, but very open and trusting. Would apologize to you if you poured soup into her lap. Most would either want to protect the sweet, innocent child or absolutely take advantage of her trusting and kind nature.
What is the achievement they’re most proud of?
She once managed to eat an entire tin of her mom's homemade butter cookies without vomiting (her mom isn't a very good cook, and definitely can't bake). But now she's expected to eat at least some every time her mom bakes them when she's home. (Just another advantage to being away at a boarding school most of the year).
Do they like having photos taken of themselves?
She's a little camera shy, depending on who she's with; any groups larger than maybe 5 and she'll try to duck around and take the picture herself instead. But small groups, she can handle it. And she'll take any photo with Tonks, so long as she changes something about her appearance to take the main attention off of her.
What’s one big way that your MC differs from the in-game canon?
Lucy does not like searching for the Vaults. She would have been content with maybe a few of his journals and an official, personal explanation from Dumbledore. Sh didn't need this. She doesn't want to be the one fixing this, but apparently no one else knows how or cares to try, so she feels responsible. She's also not in the same house as her brother.
If they’re an Animagus, why did you choose the form for them that you did?
Lucy becomes an animagus much later than in canon. She becomes one right before the 2nd war, in order to evade detection. She becomes a little sparrow bird, small and common enough to escape notice. I chose it because of its relation to the second Fable game, whose protagonist is named "Sparrow".
--------------------------------------------------
So, I hope ya’ll enjoyed! Let me know if any of you have any more questions!
(Edit: I am so sorry about the picture formatting, I know its hideous, but I have somehow lost the ability to use my mobile app to fix it (no fucking signal, my ass) but I promise I will try again tomorrow, when I am far away from the lack of signal at my house.)

Ranking every dunk in the 2020 Slam Dunk Contest
Tumblr media
Photo by Ivan Shum - Clicks Images/Getty Images
This was the greatest top-to-bottom display of dunking in the history of the competition.
The 2020 NBA Slam Dunk Contest may sadly become known for the absolute travesty that was the judging. Derrick Jones Jr. technically won the event, even though Aaron Gordon produced five straight perfect scores and then somehow got a 47 despite dunking over a 7’5 guy on the first try. Gordon should have two titles by now. Instead, he was beat unfairly by Zach LaVine in 2016 and defeated even more unfairly by Jones this time.
Here’s hoping that it will instead be known as the greatest top-to-bottom display of dunking in the history of the competition. The Michael Jordan-Dominique Wilkins duels may be the most iconic. Vince Carter may have shined brightest. The Gordon-LaVine dunk-off may have produced the best ending. But all four guys in the 2020 edition brought it, giving us a 16-dunk spectacle with no flops or disappointments. Many of the long-forgotten slams from the first round would top the best dunk in this competition’s leanest years.
If there’s one thing I hope the public takes away from the 2020 event, it’s that the 50-point maximum is woefully insufficient to cover the wondrous athleticism of today’s players. Any rating that considers Pat Connaughton nipping the backboard on the same level as the stuff Gordon and Jones produced in that final round needs to be recalibrated. That’s no disrespect to Connaughton’s dunk, which was nice. But there’s nice, and then there’s the stuff Gordon in particular did during this event.
Let’s pretend there’s no limit to the score a dunk can achieve. Here’s how I’d score and rank the 16 dunks in the 2020 Slam Dunk Contest.
1. Aaron Gordon makes Tacko Fall
youtube
I’m speechless. Absolutely speechless.
Let’s freeze this one for just a second. Reminder: Tacko Fall is 7’5. Gordon didn’t need to use his arm to propel himself off Fall’s shoulders at all to clear him. He legitimately jumped over a 7’5 dude.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at that last shot. His hands are on the side of the ball, meaning he didn’t need to use them to lift himself up to actually reach the rim.
Did I mention this was on the first try? And it was unplanned?
Tacko Fall says that Aaron Gordon dunk was not planned. “I was scared for my life”
— Ramona Shelburne (@ramonashelburne) February 16, 2020
It’s now part of legend that the 1988 dunk contest was, ahem, questionably judged to rob Dominique Wilkins. That one was at least somewhat debatable. There is no debate this time: Aaron Gordon was robbed.
MY SCORE IF THERE WAS NO MAXIMUM: Infinity is a number, right?
2. Aaron Gordon’s 360 rock-the-cradle
youtube
I’ll always prefer a 360 to a between-the-legs dunk. There’s something about watching a dude spinning in mid-air while still moving forward that gets me. And the fact that Gordon cradled the ball with one hand while doing it added a nice extra element that put this finish over the top.
I assume Markelle Fultz meant to pass the ball off the side of the side of the backboard? It worked out pretty well for Gordon that he did, and he did miss the first pass because he tossed it too far into the court. But if Gordon did that dunk despite Fultz flubbing the pass? Maaaan.
MY SCORE IF THERE WAS NO MAXIMUM: A million? Let’s go with a million.
3. Derrick Jones Jr’s off the backboard, between the legs, scissor kick, jumping over a dude and slamming with authority I’m exhausted just describing all the elements of this dunk
youtube
If you had to name some of the dunk contest’s most commonly used tropes, they’d include:
Jumping over a guy in a prop
Going between the legs
Throwing the ball off the backboard
Tomahawking it back before dunking with authority
Combining all of them into one dunk that looks fluid and nailed on the first try? Amazing that this was the third-best dunk of the night.
MY SCORE IF THERE WAS NO MAXIMUM: 999,995.
4. Derrick Jones Jr’s reverse tornado
youtube
This dunk is basically Vince Carter’s iconic reverse 360 that essentially ended the 2000 Dunk Contest before it even started, except with a between-the-legs element added to it. And not just any between-the-legs element. No, this was a between-the-legs element the opposite way while going against his body.
If I showed you this screenshot and you didn’t know how the play ended, you’d probably assume he tried jumping straight on and just missed right. Would you guess he was actually going to his left?
Tumblr media
MY SCORE IF THERE WAS NO MAXIMUM: 500,000 or so. Who’s counting?
5. Aaron Gordon calls him Chance the Reverse Dunker
youtube
It’s easy to forget that the dunk contest is ultimately a beauty pageant in basketball form. The most technically brilliant dunk is no match for a clean, first-time finish where it looks like the dunker is actually flying.
Gordon looked like he was flying on this dunk, even if the actual slam didn’t have that many different elements. Jumping over Chance the Rapper is whatever. The cock back, OK, I’ve seen that before. The reverse spin to slam while moving away from the hoop — we just saw Derrick Jones Jr. do that a dunk earlier.
But the combination of all of those elements looked so clean, so it gets the edge over...
MY SCORE IF THERE WAS NO MAXIMUM: 1,000.
6. Aaron Gordon’s reverse reverse between the legs
youtube
Originality is the name of the game, and this Aaron Gordon dunk was original. Imagine telling someone 15 years ago that someone would pull off a reverse between the legs move in mid-air and that was merely the prelude to the dunk itself. As the great Kenny Smith famously said once twice 17,000 times, “I’VE SEEN SOMETHING I’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE.”
This is one of those dunks that makes me wonder why people are down on the dunk contest. How can anyone watch that ridiculous athleticism and not be awed?
By the way, this was the sixth-best dunk of the night.
MY SCORE IF THERE WAS NO MAXIMUM: 999.
7. Aaron Gordon’s other dunk over Chance the Rapper
youtube
This was so close to an elbow dunk. So, so close. Just a couple inches more and he could stick the whole arm in the rim.
Tumblr media
And it was Gordon’s fifth-best dunk of the night. And he didn’t win. I’ll never get over this.
MY SCORE IF THERE WAS NO MAXIMUM: 500.
8. Derrick Jones Jr. goes between the legs over two people
youtube
I was initially nonplussed by this dunk. Then, I watched it again, realized that Jones did a between-the-legs dunk with authority on the first try while flying over two people and jumping from here ...
Tumblr media
... and I realized this dunk contest spoiled me.
MY SCORE IF THERE WAS NO MAXIMUM: 100.
9. Derrick Jones Jr’s sideways between the legs in the dunk-off
youtube
A very, very, very, very cool dunk that I have already seen before in previous dunk contests.
MY SCORE IF THERE WAS NO MAXIMUM: 75.
10. Pat Connaughton kisses the backboard
youtube
Oh yeah, there were two other people in this event. And one was quite good himself and was close to advancing over the winner.
I was worried for this Connaughton finish because relying on a replay to show the key element of your dunk is fraught with peril. What if none of the judges notice in time? What if they fail to appreciate it because they didn’t see it initially? Luckily, Candace Parker noticed what was up immediately, and Giannis Antetokounmpo sold it beautifully.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deduct a couple points for this being the third try.
MY SCORE IF THERE WAS NO MAXIMUM: 50 seems appropriate.
11. Derrick Jones Jr’s windmill from one-step inside the free-throw line
youtube
Spare me the sad comparisons to Dominique Wilkins’ unfathomable 48 in his final dunk in the 1988 contest in Chicago that handed the title to Michael Jordan. This Derrick Jones Jr. dunk was great for a mere mortal, but it was also a worse version of the exact same dunk Zach LaVine did at the end of the 2016 event. There’s a reason DJJ was bummed after he pulled it off. He could’ve done the same thing from a step further back, but didn’t execute.
Wait, Aaron Gordon jumping over Tacko Fall got a worse score than this??
MY SCORE IF THERE WAS NO MAXIMUM: 48 was appropriate.
12. Dwight Howard’s memetastic statue of liberty
Dwight’s first dunk #ATTSlamDunk pic.twitter.com/uvtchSAmpN
— NBA on TNT (@NBAonTNT) February 16, 2020
Shockingly, Dwight’s lack of charisma ruined what was actually a really difficult dunk. He spun the wrong way, held his pose in mid-air for a split second, and then spun the other way to throw it down. This reminded me of the sticker dunk he did in 2007, another very cool dunk that he completely ruined with a confusing presentation.
At least we get this meme forever.
"live, laugh, love" pic.twitter.com/9obLur4Ep5
— Dan Favale (@danfavale) February 16, 2020
MY SCORE IF THERE WAS NO MAXIMUM: 47.
13. Aaron Gordon pulls off a nice reverse dunk, featuring a bunch of Tik Tok Stars in the background for some reason
youtube
The dunk itself would’ve brought the house down in almost any other dunk contest. In this one, it served as the undercard for a big Tik Tok Stars presentation that had no immediate payoff. I thought they’d record some sort of skit that ended with Gordon slamming it down, like a live recording of an actual Tik Tok video. That’s what they’re called, right?
(Can you tell that I’m old).
MY SCORE IF THERE WAS NO MAXIMUM: 45.
14. Derrick Jones Jr’s original Airplane Mode
youtube
One of those dunks that must have looked cooler in person than it did on TV. To me, the layperson watching on my couch, it was simply a version of a dunk we’ve seen a thousand times before, with an elaborate presentation we’ve also seen a thousand times before.
Forty-six was a generous score for this. If it was scored correctly, Jones doesn’t even make the final and none of the judging shenanigans happen. What a Sliding Doors moment.
MY SCORE IF THERE WAS NO MAXIMUM: 43.
15. Pat Connaughton stars in White Man Can Jump
youtube
The setup was cool. The actual dunk was fine. Gordon did it better in 2016.
MY SCORE IF THERE WAS NO MAXIMUM: 39.
160,000. The superman dunk
youtube
A C+ version of the original, more than a decade later. There’s a reason the dunk wheel of the mid-2000s was a bad idea: nobody wants to see inferior versions of originals.
Scoring this a 49 was an abomination. I’ll pretend that Dwight’s first dunk actually got the 49 and this one got the 41.
(This is probably too mean considering Dwight paid tribute to the late Kobe Bryant with this dunk. Oh well).
MY SCORE IF THERE WAS NO MAXIMUM: Negative 250. If I wanted nostalgia, I’d watch the original Superman dunk on YouTube.

AIED2019: How the World's Top AI Experts Apply AI to Education
NEWS PROVIDED BY
Press Release Service Jul 31, 2019, 00:01 ET
CHICAGO, July 30, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- AI has become the core driving force of the new round of industrial transformation and ushered in a new period of industrial explosion. How to break through the barriers between technology and industry has become a heated issue. AI in education has become a favorite target for capital investment. Information-based education, quality education, language training and K12 primary and secondary school extracurricular tutoring are witnessing iterative research results in "AI+Education". What are the latest AI technologies in education? What is the current condition for their application? What's the future for "AI+Education"?
On June 26-29, the 20th AIED (AI in Education) successfully ended in Chicago. Hundreds of top researchers and experts in AI+ education, computer science, psychology and other fields from all over the world gathered together at the conference to share and discuss the latest research results in AI, as well as the experience and challenges of AI application and AI products. First Insight, as an exclusively invited media in China, reported the whole process of AIED.
Organized by the 25-year-old International Association for AI Education (IAIED), AIED has over 1,000 members from more than 40 countries. They are experts and scholars in the fields of computer science, education and psychology. At the conference, Dr. Luis Von Ahn, founder of Duolingo, a famous language learning software; Candace Thille, professor of Stanford University and director of Amazon Learning Science Center; Nancy Law, professor of Hong Kong University; Jutta Treviranus, professor of OCAD University in Canada; and Richard Tong, chief architect of Squirrel AI Learning among others delivered keynote speeches and participated in round-table discussions. The co-chairs of the conference were Bruce McLauren, professor of Carnegie Mellon University in the US, and Rose Luckin, professor of education at University College London in UK.
AI is not a new thing in education. Although "AI+ Education" is a favorite target for capital investment, there are still doubts about its authenticity. Robby Robson, CEO of Eduworks and member of IEEE Standards Committee, pointed out that AI technology has been developing all the time and that all advanced machine behaviors are inseparable from AI, but there are five problems as follows:
1. Producers do not participate in research
2. Researchers are not engaged in production
3. Consumers do not know what to believe
4. Buyers do not know what to buy
5. Favorable technologies have not been applied to production.
In short, it is the separation between technology and industry that prevents AI from being applied. Parents of children in K12 primary and secondary schools are the true consumers of AI-related products, so it is especially crucial for them to understand and accept the important role of technology. Robby Robson also pointed out that the core of the application of AI technology is simple, that is, classification and decision. Only by understanding these two things can we find a way to connect machine learning with teaching.
At present, AI+Education mainly has two modes, namely the alternative and simplified traditional educational resources, and the personalized education. Alternative education emphasizes the application of technology to replace teachers in performing some tasks or strengthen teachers' roles. Such products have developed rapidly, but their functions are relatively single. Personalized education using AI aims to complete the closed loop of "teaching, practicing and evaluating" and create customized learning method for each student, so that they will know which parts should be given up and which parts they should learn.
Intelligent adaptive system is a teaching method that uses algorithms to detect students' learning paths and provide personalized and customized learning contents for students. Richard Tong, Chief architect of Squirrel AI Learning by Yixue Group said at the conference that, "Traditional school is like a bus which provides services in a simple and convenient manner, but it fails to take each student to the exact location they want to go to. Intelligent adaptive system is like a taxi that serves each student exclusively to meet their needs."
Richard Tong, chief architect of Squirrel AI Learning, talked about the connection between human learning and machine learning as well as the way to completely change education and learning through AI. First, he talked about the reasons for applying AI in education and the significance of AI technology in replacing, enhancing, improving and redefining education. He then emphasized the continuous one-to-one individualized education for students and the change of the role of real teachers from instructors to psychological tutors for students, both of which are required by education revolution. He then introduced the reasons for the rapid development of Squirrel AI Learning from its business model, the experience of the application of AI, massive data in learning scenarios and strong computing power.
Squirrel AI Learning has created an adaptive learning engine driven by AI which integrates Mentality, Capability and Methodology (MCM), Probabilistic Knowledge State (PKS) model , Multimodal Integrated Behavioral Analysis (MIBA) using deep learning technology, Nano-Scale Knowledge Component (NKC) as well as other AI technologies like reinforced learning. This engine can promote the integration of AI and adaptive education and affect future education.
Richard Tong, chief architect of Squirrel AI Learning; Professor Rose Luckin, President of the Conference; and Ken Koedinger, Professor of Carnegie Mellon University and Chief Learning Scientist of Squirrel AI Learning, had a fireside dialogue. Richard Tong shared the success experience of Squirrel AI Learning in applying the above excellent researches into practice. The new model of "AI intelligent adaptive system + human teachers" makes for the maximum teaching effect and personalized learning experience for students. Professor Ken Koedinger of Carnegie Mellon University, a pioneer in cognitive science, shared his years' experience of applying his research achievement in cognitive science and brain science to intelligent adaptive education products. Professor Ken Koedinger, chief learning officer of Squirrel AI Learning, discussed with Professor Rose Luckin about the technologies and values of Squirrel AI Learning's intelligent adaptive teaching system and Professor Rose Luckin fully expressed his recognition. Richard Tong also held an industry forum discussion with Amy Baylor, program director of the National Nature Foundation of the United States, Brent Benson, online enterprise architect of Harvard Business School, and Kumar Garg, senior director of -Schmidt Futures, a public welfare organization set up by Eric Schmidt, co-founder of Google, to share the opportunities and challenges of their respective organizations in education science and technology. Richard talked about the importance of the cooperation between industry and academia. At present, there are four types of research fields and projects in education: learner model (to improve diagnosis and understanding of learning problems), domain model (to strengthen ontology and content), educational model (to enhance recommendation and channel optimization), and interactive model (to enhance interaction, feedback and communication). He also said that industry and academia can cooperate through various academic conferences and workshops, such as education-science and technology conferences, AI-machine learning conferences, industry conferences, workshops, tutorial samples, research papers and competitions.
On June 29, Squirrel AI Learning gathered IEEE AIS experts and professional audience of AIED to hold a workshop at DePaul University in the US to have a discuss on standardization of "AI+ Education". Richard Tong, chief architect of Squirrel AI Learning; Robert Sottilare, senior director of Soar Technology; Robby Robson, member of IEEE Standards Committee and CEO of Eduworks; Xiangen Hu, professor of the University of Memphis; Avron Barr, Chairman of IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee, together with experts, researchers and practitioners in AI education from Carnegie Mellon University, DePaul University as well as from Brazil, Cyprus and other countries, put forward their own opinions and had heated discussions about the standardization development of AI+ Education, AI's integration with industry products, the application of intelligent adaptive education system, relevant algorithms and frameworks, etc.
For example, Robert Sottilare, senior director of Soar Technology, talked about the "Cases Study of Standards and Suggested Measures in Monitoring Tasks of Adaptive Teaching System". AIS teaching areas include: cognition, problem solving and decision-making tasks, thinking; emotion, problem solving and decision-making, feeling; mental exercise, physical task; group, tasks involving two or more people, cooperated discussion. He finally asked a question to other scholars in the workshop: "The commonness in the instruction field can fulfill the following standards, namely the data exchanged in various AIS processes and the structural model in the domain. But what should the industry do to enable the AIS market to flourish? This is the next question to think about."
As a leading enterprise in "AI+ Education", Squirrel AI Learning is China's first AI company to apply AI adaptive learning technology to primary and secondary education. It has successfully developed China's first AI adaptive learning engine with complete independent intellectual property rights and advanced algorithms as the core. It uses more than ten algorithms and deep learning technologies and has developed many AI application technologies such as MCM capability value training, root cause reconstruction of knowledge map, nano-scale knowledge point splitting at the most basic level, relevance probability of non-relevance knowledge points, MIBA Multimodal Integrated Behavioral Analysis AI system, etc., the first of their kinds in the world.
As a Unicorn in China's "AI+ Education" industry, Squirrel AI Learning has accumulated nearly 2 million student data in the past four years and has set up nearly 2,000 learning centers over 400 cities nationwide. Based on its deep understanding of education and continuous investment in technology, Squirrel AI Learning, a company with more learning data than others, will take personalized learning and improving learning efficiency as the direction of its future product development.
China's AI technology is not inferior to that in foreign countries, but the development of AI+ Education lags far behind Europe and the United States since there are more than 50 AI education companies in Europe and the United States and 23 million users in the United States are using AI education products with an annual growth rate of between 30% and 40%. Given the rapid development of AI+education overseas and the huge development potential in China, Squirrel AI Learning, a leading enterprise in China, is actively tapping overseas resources and introducing and cooperating with global talents to develop the most advanced AI technology so as to make excellent intelligent adaptive learning products in line with the national conditions for Chinese students.
Squirrel AI Learning also plans to expand overseas to promote China's advanced education platforms abroad, make products based on its existing educational knowledge maps, cooperate with overseas projects and build a curriculum system of mathematics that can be used worldwide.
At the conference, Professor Xiangen Hu of the University of Memphis shared his different views on the application of AI technology in education. He said: "AI technology should not be limited to the existing intelligent tutoring system - an easy-to-understand teaching system." He proposed SIAIS (Self-Improvable Adaptive Instructional Systems) which consists of four parts. The key for this system is that learners and learning resources should match each other and they should make common progress. The core of "Self-Improvable Learning Resources" is educational games, functional teaching assistant systems and other dynamic contents. Therefore, it is necessary to define the variable but controllable modular components in the dynamic contents, combine them with big data and improve tutoring strategies through the interaction between learners and the dynamic resources.
As Nancy Law, a professor of the University of Hong Kong, said at the conference, "We should learn how to make full use of science and technology instead of being manipulated by it". We should not turn technology into a gimmick, thus exacerbating arbitrary charge in the industry. Instead, we should use technology to provide better and fairer educational resources. Dr. Luis Von Ahn, founder of Duolingo and father of identifying code, said that although Duolingo is a technological product, his company always believes that education is the fairest way to change one's fate, so they provide free services to customers and enhance learning entertainment with technology based on their understanding of learners' changing learning psychology to help students become more motivated and improve users' loyalty. Not just helping students solve learning problems and get high scores in exams, Squirrel AI Learning's intelligence adaptive system aims to enable them to acquire good learning methods, get to know their advantages and disadvantages in thinking and personality. In this way, Squirrel AI Learning hopes to provide quality education for students.
Bruce McLauren, professor of Carnegie Mellon University, said in an interview that the new generation of users grow up together with technology. Students born in the era of Internet are eager for new technologies, new tools and new learning methods, which is both a challenge and an opportunity for enterprises. Only enterprises that provide quality education will be the winners.

bringing this back
ABSTRACT: The arguments that women are inherently “less interesting” or “less talented” are hella sexist. These ideas show society’s bias in what we value in women. Suppressing women’s accessibility to sports is a social method to support the patriarchy. Women are “less talented” than men in sports not because of some inherent thing about being a woman, but rather because they are not supported in the development of their craft in the same way men are.
Sports are a major part of culture. Athletic events constitute some of the most widely consumed entertainment, and their appeal spans all demographics. Athletes are admired and rewarded handsomely for their achievements. They serve as role models. Sports give people from all socioeconomic backgrounds hope for a piece of the American dream. Sports are special because athletes are judged as individuals, not as whatever group to which they belong. Yet, the lack of support for the athletic development of women has a staggering effect on their opportunities. We are told that science, whether referencing menstruation or skeletal composition, tells us that women are less physically capable than men. I want to be clear that this isn’t about protecting women’s bodies from harm, it is about protecting patriarchal ideals from change. I think we can all agree there is nothing inherent about women that makes them incapable of playing an extra 4 points in badminton, or swimming a little further, or playing an extra round of chess. And further, there are significant biological advantages to the “female” body in some athletic activities that have been ignored for the sake of protecting men’s delicate pride. Sexism in athletics also contributes to a gender wage gap. Most agree that women and men ought to be equally compensated for their labors; a system that doesn’t support the athletic development of women and as both a consequence and a practice prevents them from performing equally, condemns them to accepting lesser compensation. Despite being restricted in competition, thus limiting how their skills develop, women are surpassing men’s performance in many sports, such as distance running and rock climbing. Further, potential is not something that can be clearly measured by current scientific studies. When the athletic development of women is supported in the same way as that of men, their performance improves greatly and begins to close the gaps in performance. In the four decades since Title IX passed, we have already witnessed a tremendous increase in the amount of female athletes as well as large gains in their performance. Since the United States Air Force expanded the fitness test to be more equal for women, they now average 7 more sit-ups than men. In current times, women have scored goals on Division 1 college football teams. Women have been allowed into men’s professional hockey games and have proven they can handle checking just as well as men. In 2002, free diver Tanya Streeter broke the men’s world free dive record. In March 2004, high school basketball player Candace Parker won a major slam dunk contest at the McDonald’s All-American game. Emily Watts beat all participants in the 28.5 mile Manhattan Island Marathon Swim race, including two men’s relay teams. Now that mixed-sex wrestling is available at the scholastic level, we have seen that young women are capable of winning combat sport competitions against their male peers. When given the opportunity, women prove themselves capable of greater things.
