Do Mordrem Dream Of Evil Sheep?

I wrote a long ass Meta post about the connection between Mordremoth and Nightmare.

I was making noise, @singing-hedgehog told me to make a post. So fine, here’s a post.

I’ve been giving a lot of thought to the connection between Mordemoth, Nightmare, and the Dream, mostly centered around how much I love the pale tree. It’s me though, so prepare to be rambled at. I think it’s neat that the Pale Tree continues to extend her protection to a bunch of Sylvari that want to tear her out by the roots. Maybe it’s because I’ve got issues with my own mom, maybe because I’m trash for altruistic good. Who knows!

First things first, what’s the connection between Nightmare and The Dream of Dreams (The Dream)? The Dream itself is neat as fuck, it’s a landscape formed of ether, will and memory that gives rise to the consciousness of the Sylvari and also births neat shit like Fern Hounds. It’s a real place, you can go there, making it the equivalent of Fairyland. And that is the tightest shit.

Moreover, Sylvari are connected to it. Everything they see or experience is poured back into The Dream to help shape the next generation. And they do this without being a freaky hivemind.

Cool Fact: It’s entirely possible that The Dream as we know it exists because The Pale Tree was planted on the grave of Ronan’s family and then influenced by the Centaur Ventari. The Pale Tree has three daddies and one of them is a pile of corpses.

Nightmare, however, is even fucking cooler. Nightmare hangs out in the center of the dream being spooky and calling to every single goddamn sylvari. All of them. Every one. No one is free of it. And that’s important because it’s the big reason why the second born Caderyn formed the Nightmare Court, home to 90% of the antagonists if you’re in Caledon Forest. Caderyn, in addition to being annoyed that Caithe said mommy didn’t love him, believed that by destroying Ventari’s Tablet and cracking the dream open like an egg he could return the sylvari to their “true nature.”

AND THAT IS IMPORTANT!

Because, gentle reader, what are the Sylvari? The sylvari are dragon minions.

What is the “true nature” of dragon minions? To serve the fucking dragon.

What is the dragon trying to do? Eat Goddamn Tyria.

Naturally the Nightmare Court has no idea that the Sylvari are Mordrem until Mordremoth starts acting up, but still.

Mordremoth, Captain Jungle Dragon, is also the Dragon Of Mind. You fight him in the Dream at the end.

And, wait for it, in the beginning if you’re playing a sylvari.

Yeah. Remember the dragon you fight in the beginning? It looks exactly like Mordremoth’s lieutenant in Living World Season 2. Oddly enough, because it is. “The Creature Of Nightmare” is the “Shadow of the Dragon” and it was really easy to assume that it was related to Zhaitan before Heart Of Thorns but, let’s be honest, it has fucking trees growing out of it. What we see there is Nightmare--Mordremoth--making a push on the Dream.

Well, why?

Because The Dream, The Tree, protects the sylvari from Mordremoth. Her protection must but bouyed by the sylvari’s strength and will, but to the best of my knowledge Every. Single. Soundless. Falls.

There’s a big difference between Soundless and Nightmare Courtiers and that’s that while the Nightmare Court seeks to corrupt the Dream, they maintain their connection.

"...we gather in nightmare. We look to the darkest part of our spirits. The covetous hand, the lying heart, the knife that betrays a friend: we call upon these, and we see their power. For what are we, in the end, if not creatures of power? It will take strength to defeat the dragons, and strength does not come by turning away any weapon, no matter how vicious or how cruel. We will use them all." Cadeyrn lounged on his throne with a careless, prideful slouch. A crown of golden vine glittered on his forehead as courtiers bowed and whispered before him, hanging on Cadeyrn's every word, their eyes as lightless as the space between the stars.

"We, the sylvari, are the future. It is our time. We must leave behind the fears of awakening. Let go the stone that weighs us down. We were born to be more than this. We were born with a darkness in our Dream and in our heart that we could embrace...if only the Mother were not so afraid of the night. It is time to show her that her children are more than even she has dreamed we could be.

"If the sylvari are to survive, we must learn from the poison thorn and the stinging nettle, the vine that crushes the very sapling which holds it to the light. We will raise the nightmare. We will see Tyria remade in our image.

"We will grow until nightmare swallows the world."

Please don’t grow ‘til nightmare swallows the world.

The Soundless cut themselves off, sadly not for any nefarious reason. The Dream is just too loud. But, in denying the Tree’s protection they opened themself to Mordremoth and it is cruel and horrible and makes my heart ache. But I love it because I’m like that.

Interestingly though, the Nightmare Court continue to enjoy this protection. In Dragonstand we’re joined by a Duchess. This means that being an evil sadist doesn’t cut you off from mommy’s love. And I think that’s neat. Moreover, while the Nightmare court thrives on pain, hate and suffering they don’t seem to hate the Tree herself. Rather, they want to free her, and all sylvari, from the restrictions of . . . being a good person, basically. (We see a good example of the hate-not-hate relationship I’m talking about with Faolain and Caithe, where both parties care deeply but cannot reconcile)

God they’re evil.

God I love them.

Naturally, there are a lot of questions left unanswered because of Malyck. He was supposed to show up in HoT and didn’t, though in Living World Season 1 Scarlet mocked players who had done his storyline about him (sadly I can’t find the dialogue). Malyck’s tree was unconnected to The Dream but he felt no real pull towards Nightmare (likely because Mordremoth was having a bit of a lie down). Probably he’s dead now. After being a Mordrem.

ArenaNet I need answers.
