very interesting how in ATLA despite being scared of destiny & the responsibility it brings, discovering & acting out their destinies is shown to be an incredibly uplifting thing for most of the characters—and even for people like yue, where their destiny is tragic, she also seems to have found peace by accepting it—whereas in the kyoshi novels every character either has a very faulty idea of what their destiny is, or is absolutely disgusted by it. sometimes both, like in the cases of kyoshi & yun who both believe themselves to be something they aren’t (kyoshi wants to go unnoticed & be happy with her loved ones the way they already are. she doesn’t expect or want things to ever change because she believes herself to be unimportant. yun thinks he’s the avatar, who is called “the most important person in the world” multiple times throughout the books. he gave up what little he had to become the avatar & everything he does is to work towards his destiny of living up to yangchen’s legacy.) and then they find out their real destinies (kyoshi is the avatar. yun is no one special.) and are absolutely destroyed by it—especially yun, who had no stable sense of identity outside of a destiny that never existed. after they figure it out kyoshi runs away from jianzhu, who’s telling her she’s the avatar (despite your every attempt to stop me, i will dedicate my life to you, kyoshi.) & yun defeats father glowworm, who’s telling him he’s nothing (you’re more trouble then you’re worth. there are better meals to be had.) but they both take their opponents words to heart. kyoshi first accepts her destiny as a means of getting back at jianzhu, and eventually comes to accept it as a part of who she is, while yun retains his anger about being denied a destiny (and the humanity people treated him with when he had it) that he thought he’d earned. the only major character in the kyoshi books who breaks this pattern is rangi, who understands & feels pride in her destiny, which never wavers over the course of the story: defend the avatar, and do it well. her consistency in conviction plays well off the constant chaos of everyone around her & means she’s able to ground kyoshi to her destiny in a way no one else can.

Do you have any Avatar Kuruk headcanons?
Hmmmmm I have a few! (under the cut for length)
So Kuruk is known as a party animal, and while I think it has SOME truth, the over exaggeration of it isn't really him. He's kinda Bruce Wayne-ing it half the time. And while he was a bit of a romantic and a little flirty, he wasn't nearly as bad as his reputation later became. Like he wasn't a manwhore/rake or whatever you wanna call him (at least before the spirits). (after the spirits..... I'm tempted to believe that even if he did sleep around....I fear it might've been because he was preyed on like that one maid did, maybe not all the time but I don't think he was surrounded by a lot of good people ;w;).
UNFORTUNATELY, his old team and supposed close friends had their perception colored later in life and forgot his real personality. Remembering only the silver tongue flirt, and thus they thought Yun was the perfect ringer.
The only people who saw his real personality since fighting the spirits was probably Ummi and Nyahitha, and Kelsang (that one time). And ironically that had more similarities with Kyoshi than other's probably saw. (which is why Nyahitha gives her so much shit and clocked her in like five seconds kfjdksjfa)
Kuruk was TOTALLY and 100% working OVERTIME in Rise of Kyoshi. This guy was trying SO FREAKING HARD to get Kyoshi together with Rangi. TT0TT Like he was totes feeding her lines of his poem because of how Rangi looks, and legit forgot Kelsang knew the poem. Kyoshi even mentions how it looked like Rangi was outlined by a spirit during the Chameleon Bay chase, and that spirit HAS to be Kuruk. TT0TT My man is the best wingman, he was trying so hard for his OTP to be together TT0TT
Kuruk and Kyoshi def vibe in the afterlife. They founded the "I Miss My Wife" club. Only for the most miserable though, which is them. ("I get Kuruk but what about Kyoshi-" My headcanon for how Kyoshi's love life goes is not a pleasant one ;w; So yeah, club founders).
Kuruk was totes fine with Kyoshi killing Xu, he probs would've been up in her face like he was with Chaejin/Huazo incident if he wasn't at least a lil' chill about it. Maybe at worse disapproved, but it was probs something like "Eh, he's an ass, you gotta do what you gotta do. Not my move but who am I to judge?"
If the "you get the face of your loved one when reincarnated" is correct, then he is so happy and sad whenever he looks at Kyoshi. Kyoshi might've decided to present herself wearing make up in the afterlife because she saw how much it hurt him.
Because of that, for the time Kyoshi hated him, he was devastated. TT0TT
He's still Yangchen's biggest fanboy, but likes to tease her about spirits. All in good fun tho. He was always so happy to talk with her.......even when his life was falling apart. TT0TT
He likes to brag about having it easy and being sandwiched between two awesome Avatar lady eras. They usually do all the talking for him when ppl hit up the Avatar past selves line (I like to think Kyoshi and then Roku found a better way to deal with spirits, so Kuruk gets to just kick back and delegate to a different Avatar now. His best advice being "don't kill the spirits" now TT0TT). He deserves rest and this is the closest he's getting to it damnit!
HC that Roku is a fanboy of Kyoshi, Kuruk has a soft spot for the boy since he totally GETS IT.
Kuruk tried his best to keep Kyoshi alive when she was younger. Not much you can do as a spirit, but he was always by her side through her worst fevers. It hurt him seeing her like that, especially when his dying wish was to make sure his friends did right by her. TT0TT
He really likes Korra, little upset he didn't get spiritbending, but hey watchu gonna do? He totally took off his hat/coat when talking to her cause of her animal guide tho fkjsadkfja He's glad she brought back the airbenders (especially since it made Yangchen happy).
I'm fascinated by his past relationships with Hei-Ran and Ummi. I think the song "If We Never Met" by John K fits him and Ummi's relationship tbh (since a lot of the lyrics seem to fit what we know about them).
That's all I got right now. I wish we got more information, I hope he gets a novel soon. TT0TT

(ATLA) Giving Ta Min a backstory
Tumblr media
I always said that many Avatars' partners need a more fleshed out backstory, specially Ta Min (Roku's wife), Ummi (Kuruk's fiancé) and Katara (after ATLA). Today I'll give some agenda to Ta Min's character...
Ta Min (b. c. 82 BG) was Avatar Roku's wife and a Fire Nation noblewoman. The series' encyclopedia says: born into one of the wealthiest families in the Fire Nation, Ta Min always thought that she would marry someone in the royal family. But then, she met Roku and was attracted to his persistence, kindness, and intelligence. She never stopped loving Roku, even after he died. She never remarried and quietly lived out the rest of her days on Ember Island.
That's all we got from this Avatar's love, and I think it's time we do her some justice. So, how can we give Ta Min a backstory? Well, she was a noble, so her family should trace its origin back to one of the clans we met in 'The Shadow of Kyoshi'. Only five clans are mentioned by Rangi: Saowon (lady Huazo's), Keohso (lady Sulan's), Sei'naka (Rangi's), Inta and Lahaisin. As we know, the clans tend to name their offspring after a significant syllable or letter of their familyname (Hei-Ran and Rangi; Ilah and Iroh; Chaejin and Chaeryu; Sozin, Azulon, Ozai, Zuko and Izumi...), so Ta Min's family must have follow this tradition. 'The Shadow of Kyoshi' also tells us that the Inta clan controls trade with the Earth Kingdom, meanwhile the Lahaisins are in charge of the passage of many sea routes. By the 3rd Century BG, both families fell in disrepair because of the Fifth Nation and the sacking of their islands and fortresses by Fire Lord Zoryu.
However, I think both clans could've made peace with the Fire Lord, and thus the Inta clan was still in control of trade with the Earth Kingdom by the 1st Century BG. The Intas are the best clan for Ta Min: first, Ta Min and Inta share the ta syllable, which could be the one passed from generation to generation; second, the control of trade would explain why they were one of the richest families, living in Hari Bulkan and being part of the Royal Court; Third, what better backstory for the Avatar's wife than that of an international family traveling through the Earth Kingdom? It fits perfectly!
Therefore, Ta Min was born the same Summer Roku and Sozin were, in 82 BG, to Tanu and Min Su (I made up their names, yes). Their home island could be... Jonduri? Makes sense, since it was an island controlled by Shang Merchants, and its inhospitable environment would explain why the family chose to live in the capital. Other options are Kirachu Island―famous for its delectable and spicy food―and Hing Wa, where ash bananas―which are later exported―grow. If 'The Dawn of Yangchen' secquel leaves Jonduri's fate open, I'll go with that island, which looks (almost) uninhabited and (almost) deserted by Aang's Era.
She grew up in Hari Bulkan and she must have attended the Royal Fire Academy for Girls. I wonder if she was a firebender, but perhaps diplomacy, cultural knowledge and politics were her forte. Anyway, I headcanon she was a bender and part of Roku's team Avatar along Sud, Taqukaq, Gyatso and possibly Sozin―this last one for a time, at least.
Ta Min's parents died when she was just seventeen. Many nobles wanted to take over her family's business, so the young woman sought Prince Sozin's help. She wanted to keep her father's loom at all costs, since the silk business with the Earth Kingdom was very profitable, but even the Fire Lord (Sozin’s father) doubted that Ta Min could manage the business, especially since she had rarely set foot in the factories. Roku's family was her great ally: Roku's father loyally managed the looms, but always under Ta Min’s orders. In time, Roku’s parents made Ta Min their heiress, since Roku had to maintain his role as the Avatar. Of course, they were targeted by the Guiding Wind...
Ta Min was a brilliant and highly educated woman, interested in poetry, astronomy, physics, music, mathematics, and geometry. She never liked easy things and that is why Roku always saw her as someone admirable, unpredictable and shrewd. For Sozin, Ta Min was unsettling...
Hope you like Ta Min's fleshed out backstory. Gosh, how I'd love to work in Avatar Studios or writing the novels like FC Yee does...

I don't think I've ever seen any meta about Kyoshi's parents, I would dearly love to hear your thoughts on them given how much you love ghosts in the narrative <3
the thing about kyoshi is that her story is a romance partly because its tragedy and fully because she exists in the bildungsroman genre. the intensity of these themes are made possible through her parents absence.
her story is centered around creating a code of ethics - and based on the rest of avatar canon, we know that she was successful in creating and sticking to a code of justice, stable enough to carve herself into living stone for some 200 years to fulfill her avatar duties fully.
but in the beginning of her story she doesn't really have an authority figure who guides her moral development, who tells her what is right and what is wrong.
there's kelsang, but he wasn't able to be around for most of her childhood after he took her in. we learn only in the meeting with tagaka that kyoshi does have similar morals to kelsang −  she would've conjured a fatal storm against pirates to save people, too. but she didn't know that about him until that moment. her feelings on that weren't learned by example.
and where kelsang feels guilt for betraying his peoples' values, kyoshi didn't have a concept of justice stemming from her culture. she's always been an outsider within her fractured nation; she was considered worthless until she wasn't. kyoshi is guided first by her honed instinct for survival and intense empathy and above all humility shaped intimately by her social position in the lower class. she didn't have the opportunity for anything else.
so her code of morality starts as reactionary - her parents were daofei who abandoned her, so all daofei are heartless honorless filth. jesa and hark are haunting the story for creating the conditions that set the stage for the entire narrative.
enter: the romance. within every plot point that shapes kyoshi's worldview of right and wrong, kyoshi's relationship with rangi is what truly centers her. arguably the greatest betrayal of her values is kidnapping and threatening Huazo and Chaejin. she left rangi behind for what she viewed  - what she was told, repeatedly - was the dirty work moral duty of the avatar. its when she went where she wouldn't let rangi follow that kyoshi almost loses herself. and it's when rangi is fighting side by side with her that she's able to stop yun from hurting more people and offering mercy by killing him - following the morals that she's chosen.
kyoshi's worldview up until her avatarhood was based on what she needed for basic survival and resentment at jesa and hark for forcing that upon her. with their absence they exasperated the challenges every avatar must face determining the course of justice.
