On This Day in New York City History January 20, 1896: Beloved comedian George Burns is born Nathan Birnbaum (January 20, 1896 – March 9, 1996) in New York City to Polish immigrants.

Burns' career started in vaudeville and continued through radio, TV and film. Burns with his wife Gracie Allen were one of the first successful husband and wife duos in media starring in radio and TV shows Burns and Allen and the George Burns and Gracie Allen Show (1950-1958.) Gracie would retire in 1958 and pass away in 1964. Burns through himself in his work, focusing on other TV projects, as well as, theater and stand up.

Burns' career had a Renaissance at the age of 79 when he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in the 1975 film The Sunshine Boys. He would continue to play up his now loveable and impish character in such films as the Oh God! Series and 18 Again. During his illustrious career Burns won an Emmy, a Grammy, and an Oscar.

Burns lived to the age of 100, passing away on March 9, 1996.

What a strange mess A. Edward Sutherland’s INTERNATIONAL HOUSE (1933) is! The flimsy plot about an inventor in a Chinese hotel demonstrating his super-television that can show anything happening anywhere is just an excuse for a series of gags and musical numbers. It’s another anarchic early film musical whose outré elements include Rudy Vallee singing a love song to his megaphone and a cat spontaneously giving birth because Peggy Hopkins Joyce sat on it. It features a wonderful array of comics — W.C. Fields, George Burns, Gracie Allen, Franklin Pangborn, Stu Erwin — in expertly timed if unevenly written bits. But it’s treatment of race is offensively dated (sometimes you just want to reach back in time and start slapping people), from the uneasy mixture of Asian actors with white actors in yellow face to bad pidgin English spoken by the Chinese characters. There’s a scene in which Burns and Pangborn play tag-team straight man to Allen that’s so well done it doesn’t matter how stale the jokes are and a chance to see her strike sparks with Fields. The hotel features a production number with Sterling Holloway doing some neat eccentric dancing. The TV thing also tunes in two fascinating musical performances, with Baby Rose Marie belting out a jazz song as if she were already an adult and Cab Calloway singing about a bass player strung out on reefer. Because it’s pre-Code, it also has some of Fields’ most risqué bits. After accusing Pangborn of flirting with him, he warns, “Young man, you are about to lose my trade.” Later, he peeks through a hotel-room keyhole and exclaims, “What won’t they think of next!”
