'Macbeth Retold
Macbeth is one of those Shakespearean plays performed with such frequency that I look for a special reason to see it again (A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Hamlet are in the same boat as far as I’m concerned). In this case there were multiple reasons: the casting of David Tennant in the lead role, the scarcity of tickets making me extra-determined to get my hands on one, and the buzz around the production’s use of binaural sound...
...Max Webster has stripped Shakespeare’s Scottish play right back to its essentials. It runs at just under two hours, no interval, any extraneous speeches gone. Rosanna Vize‘s set is similarly spare: a raised white stage, glass booths behind it. The costumes are all shades of grey and black, aside from Lady Macbeth (Cush Jumbo) in white. And that sound, delivered through wired headphones worn throughout the entire performance, is integral to the experience...
Subtlety and Suggestion
Even without the headphones, this would be a very good production of Macbeth. Where the sound design elevates it is in allowing the actors their full range, from anguished screams to mere whispers. The actors are uniformly excellent, but Tennant and Jumbo in particular are able to infuse their characters with something new in this way. Tennant’s Macbeth is cold and ruthless, yet ultimately moving as his plans unravel. Lady Macbeth is not so much an instigator as an accomplice, fracturing into madness under the weight of her conscience. The asides and the muttered musings are much more convincing and effective when not projected across the theatre...
Ultimately, this is a beautiful production. Simple, yet stylish. Haunting both for its psychological depth and the strains of its Celtic melodies, played live by Annie Grace, Brian James O’Sullivan, Kathleen MacInnes and Alasdair Macrae. Macbeth is a play which attracts star turns (I can think of another on in London very soon) but this is something truly exceptional. If you can get your hands on a ticket then don’t miss it!

Back to macbeth, dt's co-star in this brian o'sullivan has an acting podcast called putting it together. He already had the guy who plays macduff on and just released the dt's one. It's total theatre for an hour, with crazy stage hijinks from both of their careers and is overall delightful, pretty sure you'll enjoy it. Oh, and dt tells his version of 'don't enjoy yourself too much' here and i thought it was hilarious how it differs from ms' one and what it says about them both lolll
YES content made specifically for me. If I could make them do DVD commentaries/companion podcasts for every theatre role they’ve ever done, I truly would. I can’t wait to listen tonight

The ground-breaking Thames Television sitcom Man About the House was first broadcast this month (August), in 1973. It was written by Johnnie Mortimer and Brian Cooke, and ran for 39 episodes over six series.
It was adapted in the US as Three's Company, and also spawned equally successful spinoff series in the UK; George and Mildred and Robin's Nest.
There was a feature film of Man About the House in 1974, and stage and cinema adaptions of George and Mildred.
Yootha Joyce passed away in 1980, just weeks after the release of the George and Mildred feature film.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Richard O'Sullivan reprised his character Robin Tripp for the sequel, Robin's Nest, also starring David Kelly, Tessa Wyatt and Tony Britton.
Robin's Nest (1977-81) was the first sitcom to feature a couple living (and obviously sleeping) together but unmarried, in what was known as a 'common law marriage'. Special permission had to be obtained from the Independent Broadcasting Authority before the show was commissioned.

Tears for Fears - The Hurting (Steven Wilson 5.1/Atmos/Instrumental) Blu-Ray Audio
Slightly over a year after the first Blu-Ray audio disc in the "SDE Surround Series", said series circles back to the band that began it all.
Tumblr media
Steven Wilson (renowned musician and engineer) wasn't involved yet when Universal (helped by Paul Sinclair and Steve Hammonds) compiled the 30th anniversary box set of The Hurting in 2013. Looking back, it almost appears modest. None of the tracks were previously unreleased, although many were on CD for the first time, and the concert video In My Mind's Eye made its first official DVD appearance.
The High Fidelity Pure Audio initiative started in 2012, and in early 2014, The Hurting was released in this format, but only in stereo. This disc is one of many good examples why the BD-A format never really took off: It was seen as pointless by most music buyers.
As Songs from the Big Chair was a bigger album, Universal then brought Steven Wilson on board to create a new stereo and 5.1 mix. Both were included on a DVD-A within the box set, but also on a standalone Blu-ray Audio - a much more attractive release than the Hurting BD-A. Nevertheless, the format fell out of favor. Blu-ray Audio continued to exist (both standalone and in box sets like Steven Wilson's 5.1 of The Seeds of Love), but the series was over after 2016. Until Paul Sinclair brought it back from the dead with the exclusive The Tipping Point Blu-ray.
That release, it turned out, was just the beginning of a series. Follow-up Blu-ray discs have been made of albums by xPropaganda, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Shakespear's Sister, Brian Eno, Orbital, Ten Years After and most recently none other than Bob Dylan!
Now for the 40th anniversary of The Hurting, Steven Wilson created not just a 5.1 mix but also a Dolby Atmos one (which will also be listenable on streaming sites, but the other mixes are exclusive to this disc), as well as an instrumental mix of the whole album!
Another find is two bonus tracks - versions of "Mad World" and "Watch Me Bleed" from the aborted Mike Howlett sessions (the original b-side mixes of "Ideas as Opiates" and "We are Broken", which were erroneously missing from the 2013 box set, are absent, though).
Tumblr media
So we're getting four different versions of the album:
Dolby Atmos
DTS-HD 5.1
Original stereo mix (apparently/hopefully a new remaster)
Instrumental mix (hi-res stereo)
Plus two bonus tracks (stereo):
Mad World (Mike Howlett Version)
Watch Me Bleed (Mike Howlett Version)
The exclusivity and various tax/customs shenanigans haven't gotten any better since last year for me, but at least the offering appears quite a bit more generous than The Tipping Point. Still, I'm definitely glad none of the other SDE Blu-ray discs were anything I needed to have. (If I lived in the UK, I probably would've gotten more of them.)
As with the second pressing of the Tipping Point blu-ray, the number of copies of this disc is going to be pressed based on how many are preordered until March 17.
There's also a new half-speed mastered vinyl reissue of the album.

Actuslly it's fine to do those overly information-sharing reblog posts as long as you actively lie the whole time. As far as those guys are concerned I'm an aries born on October 6th whose parents are named Brian and Claire O'Sullivan (née Murphy) and I live in both cork and connacht. I don't give a shit I'll rent a burner credit card specifically so I can do the wacky minions names one

Speaking of Irish novels set in the past, have you read any of the Fionn mac Cumhaill Series by Brian O'Sullivan?
I have not!
I've not read much in the way of modern takes on fíanaigecht material. There's Rosemary Sutcliff's High Deeds of Finn McCool, which is an iconic piece of children's literature, although its Anglicised spellings are periodically Very Cursed. (Skolawn... Keelta... why.) Kate Thompson's The New Policeman, the other reason I got into medieval Irish literature, draws on Oisín in Tír na nÓg, and that becomes more noticeable in the sequels, but it's not a direct retelling.
Other than that, I'm not sure I've read any. Well, I might have tried a couple of YA fantasy-type takes and not been able to get through them, but again, those weren't direct retellings. And I don't think I've read any aimed at adults.
Not sure why this is -- before I got into the Ulster Cycle in my final year of undergrad, I was a lot more focused on fíanaigecht, and did my second year diss on Acallam na Senórach. Guess I just never really went looking. I have to say, though, I find it really hard to read any kind of medieval Irish retellings these days. I want so badly to like them and I am so, so picky, so I very rarely actually do. As a teen I devoured anything that so much as had a fairy in it; as an adult that's more likely to put me off, because I don't know what kind of Bad Takes I'm going to have to suffer through 😅
