Book Review – ‘The Ship Avenged’ (#7 Brainship) by S. M. Stirling
A sci-fi franchise taken on by a new author who has no idea what they are doing. Genre: Science Fiction No. of pages: 364 It’s ten years later, and Joat, the eleven year old techno-demon from “The Ship Avenged,” is an adult herself, and by hook, crook, and blackmail (with an assist from Rand, her very own Artificial Intelligence), she’s become one of the youngest commercial ship owners in…

Baldur's Gate 3 is still letting me do things, and with my strategy of playing this game during all of my free time to distract from December, I have done things all the way to the end of it! And immediately am starting a new game, because of course I am.
Let's get this tragedy out of the way first and then go into spoilers:
Tumblr media
Presented with the option to give Mother the MacGuffin, Miette naturally refused. Listen. She got Wyll out of his pact. She stopped a big ol' vampiric ascension and turned hundreds of vampire spawn loose in the Underdark. She killed a devil who had been harassing her all game and stole all his stuff. No one tells her she can't do something, especially not Mother.
(Also she didn't drag that fancy magic hammer out of Hell for nothing, and Lae'zel was her cherished fuck-buddy for like four whole days, so no. Mother cannot eat Orpheus.)
Which means I got the Patricia Lockwood heel-turn. Then Orpheus called Miette out for fucking a mindflayer (in front of all her friends, who had magically forgotten about that), which was rude, but she still turned into a mindflayer herself partially so he wouldn't have to but mostly so she could be the tall one.
Tumblr media
SIZE MEDIUM, BITCHES. Now Miette is the one who opens the cupboards and the cans! Now Miette is the one who kicks YOUR body like the football! (During that final battle, it was actually Karlach who kicked mindflayers off the edge of the brainship, but close enough, shhh.)
I would like to stress that Miette consumed zero tadpoles prior to this, because Mother told her to and she doesn't obey Mother. "Embrace Your Potential" has languished in the quest log. We just went zero to eldritch horror in a snap. Like damn, I could have had these abilities all along??
The only downside, as far as Miette is concerned, is that she can't wear the jutilated jarapace anymore. :( A tragedy second only to the Karlach situation. (Well, not second to the entire Karlach situation, because her breakdown after killing Gortash made me fucking cry.)
Then I ran into the consequences of making everyone prance around camp in sexy underwear combined with my decision to yoink Halsin's armor without replacing it with anything:
Tumblr media
He showed up like this AGAIN in the background of the ending during a very emotional Karlach moment, too:
Tumblr media
idk if it's a bug or intentional that the ending skipped ahead without any more character interactions after Miette decided to relocate to Avernus with ex-bf Wyll and never-gf Karlach, but I want to believe everyone just wanted to wrap things up after this.
The reunion epilogue was very sweet and I had to spend three (3) points of inspiration not to freak out and eat Shadowheart's brain, which feels like a very Miette sendoff. Though not as much of a Miette sendoff as me stubbornly trying to change her clothes for five straight minutes because why can't she wear her sexy lingerie anymore.
The moral of the story is that mindflayers deserve fashion rights.
Speaking of fashion rights, I want to find out what this "Dark Urge" origin is, and I made the perfect woman for the job:
Tumblr media
For her Guardian, I hit "Randomize" once and got this. The game knows what I'm doing and it is enabling me

Note
that premise sounds familiar
tho it wasn’t an otome
Could be a lot of things LOL I was thinking of some of my favorite media like Mass Effect, Pacific Rim, the Brainship book series by Anne McCaffrey (problematic to re-read now but it still sparks some joy)...
Norn9 is one of the only Japanese sci-fi otome I can think of off the top of my head, that probably snuck in there.
As for the urban fantasy well...that's a bajillion books and TV shows out there now.

Not gonna lie one my favorite formats of story telling is theses novel series than span over dozens of books, with smaller self contained series within or just single novels taking place in the same universe
Where there are a lot of different characters and passage of time in the stories, often enough written by several authors
like that shit SLAPS, I just found a universe from the 80´s about fantasy space travel and there are like a hundred books of it, and you can get them for like 3 bucks each because they were printed out a lot but are no really thought after now
there are TWO Audio cassets with space shanty folk songs about the stories but I cant find someone who sells them D:
I started on a series about spaceships with human minds inside them???
Its like a monster of the week format but with books and its like more of a month then a week
Why is this format not a thing anymore?

Despite already having too many ongoing projects, I decided to pick up another. Features sentient spaceships, Dad Gabe, and Jesse trying very hard to make sure the Sparrow likes him.
~
“Well, shoot,” Jesse murmurs, gently resting a hand on the ship’s flank. “Someone wanted to make sure you never flew again.”
-
The salvage of the Sparrow intertwines with Gabriel's history, as Jesse tries to use the successes of the past to win a partner for the future.

When he had stepped aboard that day in Greenhithe and found her chassis in the hold he had behaved in the manner of a man finding an unwelcome guest in his home.

the distant stars
A Ship Who Sang/Brainships AU. Yes. I said what I said
“You’ve got a rather stiff one,” the requisition officer had advised on the way up. Obi-Wan shared a look with Anakin. Neither were sure what they would be facing. As the memo had said, they were to receive ships. It seemed, as they walked down the long empty halls, that that may have meant more then the obvious.
They hadn’t encountered anyone since they left the hanger, there was maybe a handful on board when it could house thousands. All they could hear was the faint hum of minimum life support and the faint hiss of a emergency lights. It was all eerily quiet without other lifeforms around.
“Where’s the rest of the crew?” Anakin asked.
The officer shrugged, “They keep all crew and personal at a bare minimum on the new designs until they get command set up. We have several units ready to move in once their given the all clear.”
“Wouldn’t any officer have worked? I can’t imagine moving the ship here from Kamino on minimum staff was easy,” Obi-Wan questioned.
The officer hesitated, “It’s per protocol, sir.” He was suddenly uncomfortable, that was easy to tell, but he wasn’t trying to deceive. Obi-Wan and Anakin shared another look.
They had reached the end of the main hall. The officer waved the door open, leading them into the darkened control center.
“This is your jedi,” he had announced before promptly turning around, ushering Anakin out of the door.
“Hey!” Anakin yelled as he was shoved out. The doors hissed shut, leaving Obi-Wan alone a large room.
Obi-Wan took a slow look around, his breath puffing out clouds in the refrigerated air. The entire room around him was a massive network. He could see the bio-luminescent fuel lines that fed into the main engine and the computer in front of him. On the holo screen a little light was fixed on him, glowing a steady yellow. With nothing else to do, Obi-Wan moved closer to the mainframe.
With the soft whir of the comm systems, the room slowly started to turn on. The command consoles flashing to life. One by one, the lights lining the aisle eased on, leading a straight path to head of the room. At the end of the command deck, by the navigational systems a holoprojector flickered up.
The projection was of a young man, much like the requisitions officer, looking exactly like one of the millions he had seen at Kamino, and then Genosis. Obi-Wan looked at the projector which stared back calmly, something very different was going on here. Very different and very strange. Obi-Wan shivered, the force whispered, as if so many things had been leading to this moment. It felt like a gentle brush down his back.
“Commander Cody, ready for duty, sir,” The holo-image saluted. Quite filled the room after, as if waiting.
Obi-Wan looked around the still empty room, unsure.
“Hello, Commander.” Obi-Wan folded his arms back into his robe. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. Though I am a bit confused why the grand setup to meet you over holo.” The image flickered briefly. The young man frowned, serious as he dropped his salute.
“I am a advanced class hybrid ship command,” The holo paused, “Your ship board command structure.” Maybe Obi-Wan had looked confused. Or maybe he could guess. The commander’s voice softened as he admitted, “I don’t know what else to say, sir.”
“It’s ok,” Obi-Wan smiled encouragingly, “I think I’m just missing something.” Cody smiled back. The air felt light as though it shivered. Whatever it was, Obi-Wan assumed he had done something right so far. “Are you stationed on Coruscant?”
“I’m stationed here, General,” Cody said, quietly. The Commander looked at him for a moment before seeming to decide on something, “Sir, have you been briefed on the advanced hybrid ships?”
“I’m afraid we weren’t really told anything before they sent us out here,” Obi-Wan confided.
“Right,” Cody said. “Right,” He repeated softly. The oddest thing, Obi-Wan could have sworn he actually felt him through the force, as if for one moment Commander Cody had been standing in front of him instead of just his holo, and he was nervous. “To be blunt, sir, I am the ship.” Obi-Wan stared at the young man. Did he mean what Obi-Wan thought he meant? Cody continued, looking somewhere not quite at the jedi, “My brothers call us brain-ships. Which is fitting, I believe.”
Obi-Wan stared at the young man, mind whirling. He could tell Anakin had noticed his nerves when he brushed against his mind inquisitively. Obi-Wan brushed him off in assurance, he was fine. Tentatively he reached out with the force to see what was there, and he could sense Anakin and the officer still out in the hall. Farther down several clones clattered around in the hull and farther still was the shuttle pilot who had brought them here as they returned back to the orbital station.
It was quiet, so quiet he had ignored it before, there was that steady hum at his feet and in the walls. Like all he needed to do was acknowledge it and suddenly he could feel everything. It was one large encompassing being, surrounding him. The hum of the engines, the heartbeat of the living ship. Slowly, slowly, every part becoming aware of him in return. The force sang with it, as if to say Welcome! Welcome! leaving him grasping at the lightening feeling.
“Hello, there,” Obi-Wan whispered in awe. He could feel as the whole ship, as Cody started something that felt entirely like a restart. Every console and control turning full systems on. The warmth of him surrounding the everything.
“Hello,” Cody said from the holo projector. “I’ve been waiting a long time to meet you, General.”

this blog is like a heaven asylum for brooding dark-haired byronic guys (especially Orochimaru is the most byronic of them all, but y’all get the general pattern; Kylo, Otabek, Zuko & E-Touchy can attest to that) like why does it keep on happening?

I started reading the BrainShip series in my teens and was a massive fan of Anne McCaffery...  recently discovered there was another book in the collection that had slipped under my radar. Are there any books in series that have gotten published without you knowing? I'm going to have to go through my back catalogue and ensure nothing else has slipped through the cracks.

2020 Creator Wrap-up
2020 Creator Wrap: Favorite works
Rules: It’s time to love yourselves! Choose your 5 (or so) favorite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought into the world in 2020. Tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works.
Was tagged by @jadedbirch (MY WIIIIIFE)
1) Fic - Discovering - Dark City
Pairing: John Murdoch/Daniel Schreber [Read it on AO3] Summary: The future in the aftermath of the Strangers, John discovers, is less predictable than he could have imagined. And underneath his prim suits, Doctor Schreber is not what he anticipated.(From the prompt: Imagine Dr. Schreber having Kiefer's tattoos. Imagine John discovering them.)
Starting the year out by going back to writing canon-setting Dark City  was so delightful, and this was a really intriguing way to look at Daniel again. I was in the middle of getting tattooed at the time so it was also personally super rewarding to have an excuse to indulge my tattoo kink.
And speaking of...
2) Tattoo art - The Ruby of the Sea - Critical Role
Not MY art, but since I commissioned it permanently on my body I feel like I have full rights to include this phenomenal piece by the very sweet and talented Antony Flemming.
Tumblr media
3) Fic - The Ship Who Fucked - Mirrors (Brainship AU)
Pairing: Ben Carson/Larry Byrne (series continues with Dark City - John/Daniel) [Read it Here] Summary: Many Brawns XL-969 Loses and One He Keeps. For a Brainship, Larry discovers that finding the right long term Brawn isn't as easy as they tell you at lab school.
A lot of my recent really plotty writing has been a case of “what if this great Sci-Fi world building, but with my gay boys?” And after I finally got off furlough my reaction to being employed again was to write a novel based off this series of Anne McCaffrey books. I really enjoyed exploring aspects of love, attraction, romance and sexuality when one of the characters is, uh, non-corporeal? And despite the title, it’s about as close to a slow-burn as I really ever get. XD
4) Fanart - David (Mage AU) - Lost Boys
I have a habit of pulling random characters I like to fill supporting roles in long!fics I write, which is how David, Jack (24) and Nelson (Flatliners) ended up as Daniel’s half brothers in my most recent Kiefercestual fantasy epic. David, being David, ended up inserting himself in FAR more of the story than I ever intended, which included a bit of a fantasy makeover and also his own side story so he could seduce Jack, because Jack/David remains my favorite crack ship. XD
Also getting back into watercolors has been really fun, and trying to emulate some Yoshitaka Amano was a really interesting challenge (even if I was only slightly successful. XD )
Tumblr media
5) Fanfic - Laurelai - Mirrors
Pairing: Ben Carson/Larry Byrne [Read it Here] Summary: Larry has a phone number slipped in with his tips. Texting it is probably a very bad idea. He does it anyway.
Because @bonnie131313 put Larry in drag. How could I resist Larry as a fierce drag queen and Ben as the sweet little gay who wants the man under the makeup? :3
6) Honorable Mention - Emma Murdoch’s dress in 1/4 scale
I did like, ZERO sewing this year for myself because where the fuck would I wear it? But I am in the midst of making an ABJD girlfriend for May, so I drafted and made this fantastically form-fitting gown for her out of leftover fabric from MY purple gown. <3
Tumblr media
Tagging: @bonnie131313, @eirenical, @semiautomaticheart and anybody else who wants to do this??
