Hi everyone! I'm back yet again with another lengthy design deep-dive post, this time having to do with Override! It's been a short while since I've discussed anything Override related, and since I've been wanting to talk about it and its cast of characters again for quite some time, I settled on the perfect topic: how its main character designs have evolved over the course of two years!
Since I first unveiled Override as a concept to my tumblr (Which you can find linked in the paragraph above), a good few touch-ups have been made to all four protagonists— including a complete redesign of Casey! Check it out!
Tumblr media
I find that the differences in design are most prevalent with Casey, though effectively, the remaining three have also had pixel-perfect alterations made to their sprites. I'm also just now realizing that this is the first time my followers are getting to see their default sprites, something I'm very much acquainted to by this point.
Below, you will find not only explanations as to what's changed for each character's design, but also their full design timelines (And developmental names!) which includes sprites I made for Casey and Lauren back in 2019! Without further adieu, let's get into it, because we're in for a long ride!
As I've mentioned in Override's two year anniversary post, Override was once a completely different concept entirely compared to what it is today, and given this, each member of the chosen four have had quite a rollercoaster ride in just about every aspect of their design, be it their looks, name, or personality.
And who better to start with than Casey?
Tumblr media
Casey was originally going to be named either 'Weston' or 'Colton' early on in back when the project was called MOTHER: Into the Unknown, but 'Casey' was settled to be his final name once I drew him for the first time.
As you can see above, the tried and true Earthbound 'striped shirt and shorts protagonist' combo in Casey's design was used to its fullest since day one. At first, I wanted him to have a red shirt with orange stripes, but after noticing this made him look too similar to Lucas, it was changed to a blue shirt with cyan stripes.
Fun fact: Casey's dull brown hair color and the color scheme of his shirt for a while were in direct reference to one of Lucas' Smash Bros. alternate palettes, which was where I got the inspiration from (Plus, blue is my favorite color)! He was going to have red shorts as well, but that was much too on the nose.
Casey's scarf also went through a few color changes! I think the reason it was white in the first design was just for placeholder reasons, though I recall it being red for a little while before I switched into yellow for two reasons: one, the color yellow is associated with both optimism and cowardice (Both being big personality traits of Casey's), and two... well... this guy.
Lastly, let's touch on Casey's most recent design. Because Override is now its own entity separate from the Earthbound continuity, I wanted to opt for a design that was... more of my own, if that makes sense. I ended up giving him a long sleeved light cyan shirt with blue sleeves, referencing his previous design, as well as completely redrawing his hair so that it wouldn't be too spherical.
Now, how would you react if I told you that Casey's design timeline has the least number of sprites?
Tumblr media
Enter Lauren, who I've given the distinction of having the second most changed design since her first version! My original vision of Lauren was to have her be more of a 'girly girl' type (Look where that ended up lol), and while she had several preliminary names, the only ones I distinctly remember are 'Madison' and 'Hannah'.
Because I didn't bring it up in Casey's section, you might notice that Lauren's sprite style changes drastically by the third design, opting for a bigger sprite with room for more detail. Early on in, this visual style lined up with Oddity's quite a bit, and became its own thing soon enough (Plus, Override's character sprites have four pixel tall eyes. Big difference.).
For like a very brief while, Lauren's color of choice was a mint green, though that was swapped out for a shade of orange quite fast. I also wanted Lauren to have a bow, kind of like what Paula wears in Earthbound, and I also wanted her to wear a dress... before long, I realized I had just designed another Paula.
So, the dress aspect of the design had to be changed, but I first wanted to see if I could hammer out a good hairstyle for her, which doesn't come into full effect until the third-to-last sprite. Lauren eventually began to sport her trademark ruby red color, and instantaneously after that change, she switched out the dress for something marginally less lady-like; a t-shirt and overall combo.
By now, Lauren's 'nine-year-old tyrant' personality was beginning to take shape, and while her overall design was her final design for a while, I then remembered that Override takes place early on in the year, so it might make a little more sense to have her dress in something warmer (Like how Casey gained a sweater)!
Thus, Lauren was given her standard jacket, as well as keeping the pink shirt aspect of the previous design! I find that Lauren had the smallest amount of changes between the Override reveal post and this one, as all I did were give her the little hood pullies and a hood for her jacket.
And that's a wrap for Lauren! You know how I said that Lauren had the second most changes to her design since her initial concept? Well, do you want to know who couldn't keep a consistent design for the live of him for the longest time?
Tumblr media
Bradley.
With a whopping eleven different design sprites, it took me an extremely long time to settle on how I wanted Bradley to look, as well as who Bradley is as a character. Named 'Oliver' originally, his design didn't start making the rounds until I had started to round out the designs for Casey and Lauren.
Initially, I envisioned Bradley as more of a 'social outcast' type (Much more so than his present version, funnily), though I also wanted him to be kind of a nerd type who plays video games a lot and does well in class, but I also wanted him to be a 'cool guy' character who would skateboard everywhere... oh, boy, this wasn't going to be easy.
Bradley, for a while, wore glasses, as a subtle nod to the glasses Jeff wears in Earthbound: the only difference being that you could actually see Bradley's eyes. Jeff was a big inspiration for Bradley's character, too, seeing as both were blonde (At one point), had glasses (At one point, again), wore green (At some point) and didn't use magic.
It was when I did away with his glasses that his current design began to form. I briefly brought back the hoodie his first design has before giving him a red dress shirt with a black overshirt jacket (Though the hoodie was repurposed for his best friend's design, who ended up looking a lot more like how I first wanted Bradley to).
I then tested out a different palette for his new outfit by making the overshirt jacket green and trying out a long-sleeved black shirt underneath, and since that design change, Bradley was pretty much finished, save for small changes from then on (Such as his military dog tag necklace).
His current design changes two things from his previous design: one, I finally got his hair how I wanted it to look— noticed best by his bangs and the addition of a cowlick— and two, he now sports an undershirt like this, which I find has a particular 'late 90s/early 2000s' feel to it.
As for Bradley's character, it was eventually decided he would be a mix of the personalities I wanted to give him: he's mostly known as an unassuming and awkward teenager, but also likes skateboarding and playing video games. With perhaps the most design-intensive character out of the way, let's move on to our last but certainly not least team member...
Tumblr media
MacKenzie! Oddly enough, I'm pretty sure MacKenzie was like the second character I began to think of ideas for. In the Into the Unknown days, my basic idea was for her to be the standard 'early 2000s gothic girl' without going too overboard in terms of the usual dark and complex clothing.
She was named 'Destiny' at the start, but I then changed her name to 'Kenzie', as it better fit the era Override takes place in... but then I felt like Kenzie was too feminine of a name for the type of character I was aiming for, so she was promptly renamed to MacKenzie thereafter.
MacKenzie is noteworthy for having her first design line up pretty closely to her current design, though plenty of changes were made in-between. She started out with an extremely basic, placeholder look: a jean jacket, deep red shirt, black pants... boom. MacKenzie. However, for a while, MacKenzie had two things the current MacKenzie does not: a hair bow, which has a crescent moon in the middle, and bright pink wrist sleeve braces.
Most of her early sprites were focused primarily of detailing her first sprite, while experimenting some with color choices. Somewhere down the line, though, a humorous idea came to mind— what if she carried an entire stop sign for a weapon? I had wanted MacKenzie to be more of a masculine type of girl, similar to MOTHER 3's Kumatora, so it was a perfect addition to her design!
For a little while, the sprite where she first has the stop sign was her current design, before I tried out giving her the black jeans I had initially drawn her with. I liked the design, though I felt that it was a little lacking, like it was missing something... maybe if I gave her different headwear?
Her crescent moon bow was replaced with a black snapback with a purple brim (That's why MacKenzie is always represented with a purple color, by the way!), and I saturated her jean jacket a bit so it wouldn't be so flat. She also now wears a black wrist sleeve brace (Though it could also be a Psiometer... up to interpretation!) on one of her arms, as a nice callback to her starting design.
Thus, MacKenzie's design was complete! ... or, so I thought. It was when my good friend @minxxikuo took a huge liking to MacKenzie and began to draw her that I found that I really like how he portrayed her. Knives' portrayal of MacKenzie featured a shorter hairstyle that juts out to the side a bit, as well as giving her all kind of earrings.
We ended up agreeing that this interpretation was now canon, and the only other addition I made that you can find in her latest sprite— which is an extremely easily missed detail, mind you— is the addition of two little pins to the front of her jean jacket. Oh, also, her stop sign has a dent in it now, implying... previous melee use.
Well, I think that's about everything! This post ended up being much longer than I expected it to be, but knowing a good few of my followers do like when I get lengthier insights to whatever I make, I'm not sweating it too much! I hope that you've enjoyed this deep dive of the Override cast's designs— these four have come a long way!

As is fitting for the New York Times, everybody labelled a “free thinker” in this article is one or two degrees of separation from billionaire dark money.
Lets start with the author. Bari Weiss made her fame leading a campus crusade against pro-Palestinian professors, as well as Arab professors in general, during her time at Columbia University. Weiss received heavy promotion from a number of dark money-financed groups tied to pro-Israel causes, especially Campus Watch, a project run by Daniel Pipes under the auspices of his Middle East Forum group. MEF has received tens of millions of dollars in funding from groups like Donors Capital Fund/Donors Trust (Koch Brothers), Abstraction Fund (Sears-Roebuck heiress), The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation (Rockwell Automation heir), the Shillman Foundation (Cognex Corp), and the Snider Foundation (Spectacor, owner of Philly sports teams, also financier of the Atlas Shrugged films). MEF in turn acts as a sort of go-between fund for pro-Israel groups like CAMERA, David Horowitz Freedom Center, the Gatestone Institute, and the Center for Security Policy, targeting donor money to these groups and allowing them to operate. Campus Watch was a particularly odious project, producing “dossiers” of the pro-Palestine activity of professors at campuses across the world and allowing targeted harassment and smears of them. After Columbia Professor Rashid Khalidi’s dossier was published, for instance, he received a number of threatening phone calls, including one that he recorded where the caller cited Campus Watch. Weiss’ career was largely built off the attention she received from this episode.
Sitting at her dinner table are two major media personalities, Dave Rubin and Sam Harris, whose podcasts see a heavy rotation of guests associated with think tanks, charities, and organizations awash in dark money. They don’t tend to work for these organizations, but they do speak on their behalf from time to time. Rubin for instance does monthly interviews for Learn Liberty, a project of the Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason University. The university is practically owned by the Koch Brothers, who have given tens of millions of dollars to it. Until recently, Charles Koch was the IHS’ chairman of the board of directors, and it hosted the Charles G. Koch Summer Fellow Program, which placed interested students at right wing think tanks like the Cato Institute, the Competitive Enterprise Institute, and the National Taxpayers Union Foundation. It’s unknown how much money Rubin makes off this arrangement. Some of Rubin’s dark money guests include the aforementioned David Horowitz and his apprentice Ben Shapiro, the Freedom Center being a major dark money think tank in its own right, Christina Hoff Sommers, Dinesh D’Souza, and Ayaan Hirsi Ali of the neocon American Enterprise Institute, which exerted strong influence over the George W Bush Administration, Douglas Murray of the neocon Henry Jackson Society and author of Neoconservatism: Why We Need It, Maajid Nawaz of Quilliam, funded largely by Islamophobic billionaires and UK counter-intelligence, Dennis Prager, who writes for publications owned by Horowitz and Pipes, Lauren Southern of The Rebel Media, also funded by Pipes’ ME Forum, and Tommy Robinson of Quilliam, The Rebel Media, and even the Shillman Foundation directly.
Harris ran his own slush fund of sorts, Project Reason, that solicited donations for pro-Atheist work but really just funded his PhD. He recently became a dark money donor himself with his $20,000 donation to Quilliam. Quilliam employs numerous people who worked with Pipes and dark money Islamophobe Frank Gaffney, like managing director Haras Rafiq and senior researcher Usama Hasan. It also works closely with the Henry Jackson Society. Quilliam’s employees Ghaffar Hussain and Raheem Kassam have worked for both simultaneously. Its major backer since UK counterintelligence stopped sending it money in 2011 is the John Templeton Foundation, criticized heavily in 2007 for the religious bent of its scientific funding by Harris. Harris’ podcast also has a number of dark money guests: Michael Weiss and Douglas Murray (thrice) from HJS has been on, James Kirchick of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and Brookings Institute, Maajid Nawaz of Quilliam, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Charles Murray, Anne Applebaum (twice) and David Frum (thrice) of the American Enterprise Institute, Fareed Zakaria of the New America Foundation, Ben Shapiro of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, Niall Ferguson of the Hoover Institution (and husband of Ayaan Hirsi Ali), Robin Hanson from the George Mason (Koch) University, Eliezer Yudkowsky who accidentally created the Dark Enlightenment, and Elon Musk’s lapdog Max Tegmark (twice).
The third guest at the table, Eric Weinstein, is famous largely because the aforementioned people started talking about him and his brother. He’s been on Harris’ show twice, his brother once, and his brother was on Rubin’s show. He also works for Thiel Capital, run by dark money baron and Dark Enlightenment patron Peter Thiel.
Really, I’ve already got this much and I’m not even past the second paragraph. And when we scroll down the article, we get a number of names already mentioned: Douglas Murray, Maajid Nawaz, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, and even a full photograph of Christina Hoff Sommers. All of these people are making big money from billionaires and then pretending like they’re being harangued and silenced and collecting money from patreon type gigs.
Nowadays Ms. Soh has a column for Playboy and picks up work as a freelance writer. But that hardly pays the bills. She’s planning to start a podcast soon and, like many members of the I.D.W., has a Patreon Account where “patrons” can support her work. These donations can add up. Mr. Rubin says his show makes at least $30,000 a month. And Mr. Peterson says he pulls in some $80,000 in fan donations each month.
Somehow I doubt that work “hardly pays the bills”. And do we need another podcast?
The organizations that fund these people all have certain characteristics in common. A commitment to some form of Libertarian economics, pro-Israeli politics, a strong Islamophobic bent, and fear of being in the spotlight. The donors build up a layer of protection around themselves by shuffling money through front groups, like the Koch Brothers’ Donors Trust/Donors Capital Fund. Not only do they pay for academic work through think tanks, they also donate to certain universities heavily to bias research in their favour, which can then be cited by their think tanks and other publications. They also generally stay away from direct involvement in political campaigns. Instead, they tell politicians when they donate to pay attention to the dictates emanating from certain think tanks, which in turn determine the policy of those politicians. The Federalist Society, for instance, has prepared virtually every judge nominated by the Republican Party under both Trump and Bush. They act in coordinated fashion, which is why Bari Weiss had access to these people, why they had a flashy website nobody had ever heard of up for the article’s publication, and why Weiss already had an interview lined up on the TV show of a former Republican congressman and the daughter of a former Secretary of State before her article was published. As usual in the halls of media orthodoxy, where everything is the opposite of what it actually is, “free thought” is a giant corporate PR campaign in which everyone stays on message.
If you want to read about a few of these foundations, see here and click around on here and here.

On September 11th, 2020, I posted this, a teaser for a 'faux Earthbound-inspired project' featuring four brightly colored silhouettes of its four main characters. The concept and characters were shrouded in mystery up until April 7th of the following year, where I posted yet another teaser in the form of an in-game screenshot, revealing the character of Lauren Henley and the project's placeholder title, Project 2000.
In that post, I mentioned that Project 2000 isn't the project's final name, and that I would be unveiling its true name later on down the line. The truth of the matter was that I could have gone and revealed the true name as early as... well, 2020 if I wanted to. But a lot of the project was still being figured out at that time (Including the designs of its main characters!), and I wanted to hold off on revealing anything more until I knew I was 100% ready to explain what this 'Project 2000' even is.
Now, nearing a year after I posted the initial first teaser, I feel as though it's about time to introduce a few more original characters of mine to this blog, and with that being said...
Tumblr media
Let's talk about Override!
Tumblr media
Shigesato Itoi's 1994 cult classic Earthbound (Known as MOTHER 2 in Japan) flopped due to misleading marketing when it came around to being released in the states, but its witty humor, nonstandard JRPG setting and its colorful visual presentation proved to be a hit to the American audience in due time.
This, of course, led to creators opting to shape games around a similar basis to Earthbound, whether its in terms of graphical style, humor, battle tactics, and much more. I think the most popular example when the phrase "Earthbound-Inspired RPG" comes to mind is undoubtedly Toby Fox's Undertale, which shared a lot of the same humor as its inspiration as well as a similar graphical style.
Some fans liked the MOTHER series so much that they wanted to take the franchise into their own hands and create the next installment after Shigesato Itoi stated that MOTHER 3 was the last game in the franchise, and MOTHER 4 began production by fans. Many Winter 2014s later, it was unsure if the game was still in production, though the project was officially rebranded as its own entity as Oddity in 2020.
Override is, essentially, my kind of Undertale/Oddity, mixing elements from Earthbound, MOTHER 3, the Y2K bug and the general 2000s aesthetic together into one. By that first part, I mean it's an Earthbound-Inspired RPG crafted by my own hand (Dating as far back as mid-2019); it, of course, isn't an actual game, but rather a collection of conceptual art pieces and faux in-game screenshots I've made detailing what it would look like as a real game (Like Mega Man Ultimate).
Tumblr media
Oh, right, the plot! Bear in mind that a lot of the finer details of Override's story haven't quite been figured out yet, but I can say that I at least have enough to finally get around to talking about it.
Charles Feldman, CEO of Synergon Robotics, longs to spearhead a dystopian world with an invincible army of technologic law-enforcers, though finds it almost impossible to in his current time, the year 2095, where such technology is commonplace.
For years, he has meticulously shaped a plan where he, a team of subordinates and all the robo-security he could need would time travel back just before the year 2000, wherein he would corrupt all technology at that point with a 'Y2K Bug' and force the denizens of the world to live a lifestyle not unlike the events of the novel 1984, wherein humanity's every move is closely observed, and if someone steps out of line, they fall to the wrath of the Synergon Police.
His plan, for the most part, is successful. He travels back to the date November 18th, 1997 to have enough time to prepare for his eventual world-ruling plan on midnight, January 1st, 2000. The aforementioned Synergon police are armed with powerful devices called 'Psiometers', which are watch-like gadgets which connect to the user's neural network to unlock the powers of the mind.
Psiometers alongside other tech necessary for Feldman's ploy are transferred base-to-base in the middle of the night via drones, which are equipped with cameras and can hold up to twenty pounds of equipment. However, on the night of December 30th, 1999, a flaw in the wrap-up of Feldman's ultimate plan occurs, when a last minute drone delivery of two Psiometer units results in a crash.
The drone lands in the yard of the Henley residence. Nine and a half year old Lauren Henley overhears the crash and goes outside to investigate, finding the busted drone amidst the snow. After another brief malfunction, it shuts itself down, and Lauren, vowing to figure out its origins, drags it into the garage and goes back to bed...
December 31st, 1999. Lauren brings the Synergon drone to her neighbor's house, and shows it to her best friend, nine year old Casey Treverton. The two shortly discover the drone's contents, and Lauren instantly suspects there's more to the Synergon story. They ultimately are short on answers for the time being, and keep the whole thing a secret from their parents until later that night...
One minute until the new year. Casey and Lauren hurry to the downstairs of the Treverton residence to catch the ball drop for the new millennium. Whatever weirdness happened earlier is put on the backburner as the two flop down in front of the TV, eagerly counting down the seconds left of 1999.
"5... 4... 3... 2..."
Then, a nationwide power shortage. Nobody has any clue what's going on. Eventually, the TV flickers back on, and instead of the new year festivities they had been watching prior, the picture depicts a grizzled although finely dressed man in front of a white backdrop; Charles Feldman.
He states that his message is being broadcast across every television in the country, and reveals his lengthy plan to create a highly technical dystopian society overseen by Synergon Robotics, threatening to rewire any technology he pleases for the worst should anyone oppose him.
Casey and Lauren grimace at each other.
Three months pass. Not a lot has changed this early on in, though the citizens of Maywood are under close surveillance by various automatons to make sure nobody tries anything funny. Lauren decides that she has had enough of this 'Synergon Business' and asks Casey if he's interested in figuring out how the Psiometers work and using them against Synergon to ultimately take them down.
At first, Casey is unsure, true to his nervous personality. There isn't any rational way two children could lead to the downfall of an entity which has taken over the world, but Lauren is sure of their success, and with enough coercing the two embark on a mission to take back what's theirs. Who do they meet along the way? Just how deep does the Synergon plan run? And will they reign victorious? Only time will tell...

Well, now that we have the lengthy scene-setting out of the way, let's check out the good stuff; checking out the four heroes of Override which were teased last year! It's a good thing I chose to wait to show their designs off, because the silhouettes shown in the teaser weren't the same designs as what I have now. So, let's get right into it!

It may have taken much longer than I expected to show Override off, but at the very least that means I can now get around to posting/writing about what I've come up for it! I have a lot of Override-related content on the way, though I find that this is an excellent way to introduce its world! A LOT of work was put into this, so I hope you've enjoyed everything this post has to offer!
