Please Don't Leave Me (Pt. 21)

Bucky x Reader

“Bucky. I’m sure she’s fine. Maybe she just needs a little space. A lot has happened.” Steve said. 

“Steve. I know her. She doesn’t do space.” I told him. Why was no one concerned. 

“I think your protective boyfriendness is clouding your judgment. Y/n’s a badass she can take care of herself.” Sam said. 

“It’s been three days. She hasn’t called or texted. Her phone is off.” Nat said to Steve. 

“Okay. If she’s not back by tomorrow we will worry about it.” Steve said. I slammed my hands on the table and walked out. Why was no one worried? This was so out of character for y/n. Things were going well. Why would she leave? Christian. I went to the conference room and tried to figure out how to use the screen. She must have found out about the photo. That’s the only thing that could have made her do this. She must be looking for him. She’s gonna try to find him on her own. I’m going to find him first.

Meanwhile in the Upper East Side

We made it to a hotel across the Met and I knew that Jamie was right. Chrisitian was one for the dramatics and he used to go here for galas all the time. When I thought he was the CEO of that big company we would always go to functions here and that's where he did business. Always talking to some rich investor. 

“There’s a gala tonight. That’s probably where he’s gonna be.” Jamie said as he set a suit bag on the bed. 

“One problem. We werent invited.” I sighed. 

“Wrong. I’m a Valentino, I’m always invited.” He smirked. 

“Jameson Valentino. You are a saint.” I lowered the binoculars and stood up from the window. 

“I had Becca pick up a dress for you. It’s black tie.” I nodded. He really had thought of everything. 

“10 sharp.” I looked at my burner and it said 8:30.

I spent the next hour getting ready and we headed to the Met. Jamie made sure we could get our guns in by talking to some security guard that used to work for him. 

“Are you ready?” He asked as he led me to the ballroom.

“Yes. We find him and then get the fuck out.” I said as I reached for the bottle of champagne.

“There's a private office upstairs. We need to get him there.”

“Are you sure this is going to work? We have one shot and I don’t want to mess this up-”

“Stop, stop. Y/n you’ve got his. Based on what you’ve said, Christian is obsessed with you. He’s not going to expect it, he’s predictable.” He said with his hands on my shoulders. We walked around the gala and Jamie introduced me to like 40 people and I couldn't tell you any of their names. I was on my third glass of champagne and I have seen Christian not once. 

“I don’t think he’s coming.” I said from behind Jamie. He turned to me and went to talk and that’s when I saw him. All the air left my lungs. 

“Y/n, what is it?” I just kept staring at the man that was staring at me. He lifted his glass and smiled. A devious smile. Jamie turned around and he saw him too. 

“Brother. I didn’t think this was your scene.” Christian said as he walked over. 

“Manhattan called. They needed me back.” Jamie said.

“Ah. Of course they did. One Valentino wasn’t enough.” He grabbed Jamie's shoulder and I couldn’t move. 

“Y/n. One Valentino wasn’t enough for you?” 

“The first didn’t satisfy me, so I had to try the other.” I said from over my glass. He looked amused. 

“Why are you really here? Not that I don’t love this little family reunion and all.” He held up his hand as if he was trying to not offend anyone. 

“It’s been 2 years, Chrisitan. I wanted to see my brother. Why don’t we take this somewhere private.” He gestured to the stairs. 

“Yes. Let’s.” We started walking and we were stopped by two guards. I looked at Jamie confused. 

“I know you have weapons,” I sighed. I pulled up my dress and gave him the gun that was concealed in my thigh holster and Jamie gave over his gun. 

“Your other one.” He looked at me, smirking. I rolled my eyes and pulled up the other side of my dress giving him the other gun. 

“Now that you are both disarmed, let’s talk.” He opened the door and walked over to the unlit fireplace. I kept knives in the corset I was wearing and in the heel of my louboutin’s. 

“Let’s just cut to the chase. Why are you following me, Christian.” I crossed my arms. 

“Can’t an ex boyfriend check in on his ex girlfriend?” He laughed. It sent shivers down my spine. 

“Fine. You caught me.” He poured himself another drink.

“That’s not why. You tell me why you’re here and I’ll answer your question.” He said nonchalantly. 

“Enough games Christian.”  Jamie said, stepping between us. 

“Why don’t you give us some space brother-”

“Why? So you can beat her again? Absolutely not-”

“Its okay, Jamie. I’ll be fine.” He turned to me and he hesitated. He gave in. 

“Fine but I’ll be right outside.” He turned back to Chrisitan. 

“Don’t do anything stupid, brother. I’ll make you regret it.” He left and shut the door behind him. 

“Now where were we?” 

“I want to put an end to this. I’m tired of your games.” I tried to remain stoic but I was scared. He kept getting closer. 

“I thought you liked games, y/n” Another step. 

“Not when you are the one playing.” Another step.

“Oh no that’s not what I remember.” Before I knew it I was backed into the wall. His breath hit my face. I reached for my knife and plunged into his side. He growled and I ran to the door. It wouldn’t open. I started to panic. I heard a clatter as the knife hit the floor. I felt a rush of air and he grabbed my shoulder and turned me around. 

“You think you can run from me? I’ll just find you again.” He pushed me so my head hit the door with a bang. 

“And again.” His hand went around my neck.

“And again.” This time veins formed under his eyes. My eyes went wide. 

“Are you scared, sweetheart?”  I nodded. 

“You should be.” I whimpered as he hit my head against the door again. 

“What is wrong with you?” I tried to get out as the hand around my neck got tighter.

“You don’t like my new face?” The veins went away and his eyes returned to normal. 

“What are you?” He dropped his hand. 

“What do you think? You really thought I didn’t enhance myself the second HYDRA gave me the chance?” He backed away and I kept my hand on the doorknob, hoping it would magically open. 

“I’m a vampire.”

The Final Letters; Lil One Shot 

TW: Emotional Abuse, Physical Abuse, Parental Death 

Below the cut are the four letters Lil sent before the collapse of White Crest with the help of Metzil. Each has a strange seal on them, a family crest for the Adamson’s that seals them with red wax.   On the back of each letter is the name of the person who is receiving them as follows.  

Rebecca “Becca” Leary   Liam Adamson  Violet Adamson   Jameson O’Hare 

There is no return address, nor is Lilian’s name on any of the letters on the outside, but the crest would make it obvious to any of them who had sent it.  Attached to Jameson O Hare’s letter is a package, which contains Lil’s family heirloom necklace, the ring she used to seal the letters , and a Painting, with the note attached:

“She made this painting. I think it holds just a glimpse of the beauty she was always so capable of. The future she gave us is the whole scope.” written by Metzil. @deathisanartmetzli

Lil was unaware of this addition. 

Rebecca Leary’s letter  

Becca, 

I know you might not appreciate this sentimentality right now, but I know there was things that I wanted to hear them say one last time to me and I never got to hear it so I’m going to tell you this now and you can be big mad at me later. 

None of this was your fault. I know right now you are thinking about how I didn’t call you, that I must have thought you couldn’t handle it. But you’re wrong. I know that you could have. I know you could have done all of what I just did, and you would have done it well. I chose not to tell you or call you simply because I don’t want you to die. I want you to live. 

I want you to live, Becca. I want you to have a chance of a life that’s not steeped in this. My story ends here, but yours doesn’t. That’s all I wanted for the three of you. I know I can’t convince you to go live a normal life, and I’m not going to waste time trying. I just want you to have something more than just revenge and sorrow. It’s all I wanted for you, Kiddo. Since the day we found you in that house I just wanted to protect you. 

I’m sorry I can’t do that anymore. You deserve someone to protect you. You deserved more than this life. I know at times you thought I was keeping you from something - power maybe? - but I wasn’t. Becca I just wanted you to have something more than rage and ruin. I didn’t want you to be the solider that they tried to get me to be. I wanted you to know that you were more than that. 

Maybe I didn’t do it right. Maybe even now I’m fucking this up, but just know that I never did any of this because I didn’t think you couldn’t do it. I did it because you shouldn’t have had too. You shouldn’t have to carry all of this, but I know that just because you shouldn’t have to doesn’t mean you won’t. 

I’m sorry that It took me until now to realize that. I admire you, Becca. I know you are just trying to do the right thing and I shouldn’t have kept insisting that you weren’t ready. I hope, maybe now that you’re the oldest you can understand why I did what I did. Why I insisted on training with you, is I know how it was like when I was alone. How scary it was, and - I didn’t want you to do that. I just wanted you to have a family again. 

Maybe you never saw me as that, but know that you were always my sister. Always. 

You’re an Adamson. In every way that counts, so you’re getting your birthright too. Jamie’s got it because I figured it would take the most time to get to him, and I wanted to make you actually talk to someone about what just happened. You get the necklace, and all of the documentary things. I’m sure I won’t have anybody left, but if you find me please bury me next to Violet. The plot’s already paid for. I know what Charlie said, and I don’t care. Put me next to her if you can. 

Also, I think a friend of mine might come out and visit you. His name is Emilio, and I want you to try and listen to him. Try not to kick him please. I know he looks kickable, but unlike Jamie he’s absolutely going to body you if you try. 

I love you Kiddo. With my whole heart. Even when you annoyed the shit out of me. Even when you thought I couldn’t know that until the end of my life, I love you. 

I will always love you.

Liam Adamson’s Letter 

Hey Bud, 

I know you aren’t my little buddy anymore, and that you’ve grown but please indulge me for right now, Squirt. I know you’re probably upset at me for not letting you all know what was happening or asking for you to come and get me. You probably got told by Jamie by now what all happened to the town, and you would have thought of a million ways that it could have done different. 

I want to tell you, that there wasn’t another way. Whatever you are thinking, there was nothing that you three could have done that I would have helped, and I wouldn’t have let you try. I know it’s selfish. I know that it’s painful. I know. But there was nothing you could have done. I’m not sorry for what I’m about to do, but I am sorry that this is going to hurt. 

Take care of the other two. I know that they are strong, and that all three of you are going to do great and wonderful things without me, but you’re gonna have to be their heart, bud. Your sisters are going to react to all of this and want to go after whatever did this, but there’s nothing to do. There going to freak out, try and plan on coming over here and do something objectively stupid. I know. I would have done the same thing, but if we did this right, you’ve got nothing to worry about. I won’t be there anymore. Don’t try anything silly because you’re hurt right now. 

If you need to be angry at me I understand, Squirt. If you need to be scared or hurt go ahead - but don’t mess with this. Don’t try to bring me back. You’ve gotta accept that I’m gone. I know it hurts, but you have too. I know you’re good at seances and stupidly smart and stubborn enough to try, but you’ve got to let me move on. You gotta let me do this. 

I am so proud of you. You’ve gotten so strong and still held onto your heart, and that’s not an easy task. I know that I’m not going to be there to see how you and Violet continue to grow, but know that I already know everything that’s important. You’re going to do great. 

Keep looking at the stars. I know you aren’t scared of the dark anymore, but keep looking up.

Hey Munchkin, 

I know when I left for Aunt June’s house I promised you that I wouldn’t get into any trouble, and to phone you if I needed help. I know you’re probably screaming right now, and I deserve it. I’m sorry, Sprout. I wish I could tell you that I’ve been a quiet spinster, but we both know that I was never one to be on the sidelines. 

I’m not going to tell you exactly what happened, and I hope you can forgive me on that one. I don’t want it to be a mystery, but you three are too clever for your own good sometimes. Just know, that I’m pretty sure we can get this ritual to work. I believe in that, and that’s what’s getting me to the finish line.

Take care of your twin, Little Sprout. They have a sensitive heart and while I know both of you work well together, there’s going to be a time where they fall behind and you’ll need to help pick them up. You’ve gotta be strong for them. It’s not fair, or right, but you have too. I know you will, though. 

Be careful, Violet. There’s going to be more bad things that happened in this life. You’re going to have more challenges, and I know that you think you’ve got them, but being in this profession is going to wear you down. Don’t let that happen. Be stubborn (you’re good at it) and keep going on. You can weather this. I know you can. 

Keep an eye on Becca. She’s not going to let it on, but I think this is going to hit her when she least expects it. Please, keep your sister safe. I’m counting on you. 

I’ve always been in awe of you, Sweetheart. You’re so brave and resolute it’s hard not to be, and I know it’s not the type of trait that people praise in you but it’s why I know you’re going to be great. Hold your head up high, and remember bravery isn’t the absence of fear, it’s doing it in spite of it. Keep reading and keep being as funny as you want to be. There’s no reason to be sad even in our profession. You’ve got this. 

I know, Dad wanted you to be a demonologist, but fuck him. I didn’t say it while he was alive, but really fuck him on that one.  Do what you want to do. Whatever that is.

Jameson O’Hare’s Letter

Jamie, 

I guess I should call you Father O’Hare in this right? Since I guess this is pretty self indulgent and part confession. I guess I’m saying I'll haunt your ass if you share all of this with the kids. Knowing Becca and Violet are going to try their damndest to try and get revenge, and I stopped them last time but you’re gonna have to this time.

I’m sorry about that. I know you don’t want an apology, but I am sorry for leaving you alone now. 

I’m about to do something stupid dangerous, but I’m hoping you’ll find it in your heart to know that I did it to save everyone else here. There’s a lot of people here that I’ve grown fond of - some of them as gruff as you if you can believe it. I couldn’t run off knowing that I could have taken one of their places. 

I guess you were right in the end huh? My hero complex is what’s doing me in. 

Please laugh at that. Christ I’m going to haunt you if you don’t. 

My last confession I guess is that - That night? When you found the shitty motel we were at and you told me to run away with you? I wanted to leave with you badly. I wanted to go with you that night when you said we could just run off and start again when my dad told you that I wasn’t going to be your partner. You must have gotten off that call and speeded over without a thought to come get me. I told you then that I supported it, that it was the right choice and I know you knew I was lying. 

 Sometimes I wonder if I had, where would we be. Would you have found a nice man and settled down? Without people watching you like a hawk, I think you could have. Would I be married to a nice lady  and have all of these exorcisms in my past? Maybe right now we could have been professors or something somewhere nice and sunny complaining about the fucking sports game. Shared a back yard and done all that stupid shit we thought about. We could have had a nice life, I know. 

But I couldn’t have left them, Jamie.  Becca was barely thirteen and - she still was screaming at night you know? She shouldn’t have had to - she couldn’t have. I don’t think if my dad had just her training alone that she would have survived. And the twins. They were still so small. I didn’t want them to grow up like I did. I think you knew that. I think that’s why you didn’t press.  You knew that I wasn’t going to leave them there. They were so young, Jamie. I couldn’t do it. 

Jamie, I’m so sorry that I dragged you down this road with me.  Funny now I can see like I couldn’t leave them, that you couldn’t seem to leave me either. You tied your future to me so tightly that even now I betcha if I called you right now you’d run with me even now. Come get my ass before I do this ritual and quit the Church. 

I’m sorry that I’m not letting you do that. You see I finally found some peace in my life here, and I don’t want to leave. I’m not a good exorcist, never really have been but I can help save the people in this town. I can do that. I know I can do this. They can go on and have all those dreams - and hell I think a few of them might actually go and do it. They might get to live a happy tomorrow, and as long as that’s a possibility I want to see them try. 

I know my life was written to be a  tragedy, you know? That death was going to come to me far too young for most. I can feel him just over my shoulder now. I should be scared of that, but I’m not. Even though my life was written like this I know that somewhere there’s a light and I’m holding onto it. Fuck I may have been written as a tragedy, but I’m going to be a triumph. I know I’m doing the right thing. 

I hope you know there’s nothing you could have done, and that I’m not lying when I say that if I had to do it again I would. This stupid plan is the first thing in my life that I’m sure of even if I think my parents are screaming from the other side. 

I know I’m leaving a lot of mysteries behind, a lot of things unanswered, so I understand if you’re frustrated with me but please just do these two things for me. Watch after the kids, I know that they're grown but I can’t help feeling guilty that I can’t go back to them. I know that they don’t need me now, but I can’t seem to let it go. It’s selfish and awful of me to ask, but I know you’re gonna do it anyway. 

The second is probably worse for me to ask, but please for God’s sake - go find some peace for yourself. Go find that stupid picket fence if you still want it. You’re carrying all this weight, and I won’t be there to help you like you helped me. The thought of it makes me sick, Jamie. Knowing that I can’t, but I have to hope that you don’t need me as much as I needed you. 

I gotta hope that you don’t have to have an end like mine. Have a gentle existence if you can, Jamie. You deserve a gentle end, Brother. More than most.

I’ve attached my prayer necklace, and I’m sure Becca is gonna come to you sooner or later ‘cause I told her too. Please give it to her, as the next oldest daughter they are her right. I also gave you copies of their letters in case they destroyed them. 

I’m sorry for doing this to you.

Becca and the Sneaky Violinist by Onna Carr is a modern-day version of the story in which the Lloyd Webber musical is being performed... I think. The excerpt involves a lot of stock photos and I’m honestly not sure how solid the through-line of the plot is. But, I mean, I always appreciate a sneaky violinist.

Corked & Tapped: Maddie by Becca Jameson is an erotica novella about a girl meeting a mysterious masked man and getting it on with him. It’s hard to tell how closely it follows the story, but it seems like it’s meant to be at least an allusion to the original story.

Das Phantom von Notre Dame by Simon Borner & Logan Dee is a German-only tale about a demonic haunting of Notre Dame.  Normally, I’d say that’s more likely to be a Hunchback of Notre Dame reference, but as you can see from the cover, it’s not just using the word Phantom but also referencing the Lloyd Webber musical’s mask, so it’s probably a fusion?

Phantom Song by Kate Sheeran Swed is a future cyberpunk story in which Claire Leroux, a cyborg who wears a mask to hide the parts of her face replaced by machinery and protect herself from the anti-cyborg contingent in the city, performs opera and hopes to catch the man who killed her family.  She also agonizes over reuniting with her childhood sweetheart, Isabelle Chagny, so RED ALERT ALL Y’ALL THE WLW ADAPTATION HAS FINALLY ARRIVED.  (This is the second in a cyberpunk series, but the first doesn’t appear to be Phantom-related.)

Untotentanz by Amalia Zeichnerin is another German-only offering, this one about nineteenth-century paranormal investigators working on a different case accidentally finding themselves drawn into the stranger happenings at the Paris opera house.

Summer is such a weird time for Phantom lit, but I don’t have time to talk about that right now because I have to finish a review!

“I can and I will just so you don’t break my neck!” Marvin hollered from where he had taken shelter behind the couch. “Do you know how hard you throw?!”

“I’ve got a welt the size of a baseball!” Chase added, making the mistake of poking out from behind the piano to show them. As soon as he was in sight, another ball smacked him in the forehead and he cried out, falling dramatically to the carpet. Marvin and Jackieboy jumped, glancing around in wild ignorance as Jameson, the silent assassin, readied his next shot from his hidden perch.
