A collaboration between Yakima Chief Hops, Bale Breaker Brewing, and Alaska Air; Maui Brewing Company releases Hop Cargo Fresh Hop IPA.
Press Release
Kihei, Hawaii (October 20, 2022) – Now available in Maui Brewing Company’s Kihei restaurant location, Hop Cargo Fresh Hop IPA. This fresh-hopped beer was made through an epic collaboration with Bale Breaker Brewing Company, Yakima Chief Hops, and Alaska Air, providing the opportunity to brew with wet hops for the first time in MBC history.
The window to start brewing with fresh hops, as opposed to dried hops, is incredibly short. So short in fact that fresh-hopped beers are typically only made by breweries in close proximity to a hop farm. For this project and with the help of Alaska Airlines Air Cargo, both Maui Brewing Company and Alaska’s 49th State Brewing were able to receive a bulk shipment of fresh hops in under 24 hours from when they were picked at Loftus Ranches in Yakima, Washington.
Upon landing at Maui’s Kahului Airport and going through Hawaii's Department of Agricultural inspection, this shipment of hops went straight to the Kihei brewery where the MBC brew team was ready and waiting to start brewing. (Photo source: Ingrid Barrentine / Alaska Airlines)
The India Pale Ale boasts juicy, pine, and stone fruit aromas with sweet malt and subtle, pleasant bitterness to bring balance to the gutsiest hops. The beer has an ABV of 7.2% with 30 IBUs.
Hop Cargo Fresh Hops IPA is currently available on draft at MBC Kihei and will be arriving soon to MBC restaurant locations in Lahaina, Kailua, and Waikiki.
The MBC team are stewards of their communities and the ‘aina, and curators of the craft beer way of life. Their beers have been recognized worldwide for quality and innovation.

Fresh Yakima Valley Hops
Eighty percent of all American hops are grown in the Yakima Valley. Despite being so near the fields, Central Washington has never been a hotbed for brewing. In the early eighties, Bert Grant opened the first modern brewpub in the United States, Yakima Brewing and Malting Company. But after Grant’s death in 2001, the company quickly fell apart. Since that time New breweries have popped up here and there, but the largest is Bale Breaker Brewing. Founded in 2013 by three siblings and third generation hop farmers, Bale Breaker is now one of the larger breweries in the state.
Naturally, Bale Breaker focuses on hop forward beers made with locally grown hops. Their range has a distinct hoppy flavor, not so much juicy or fruity but raw and leafy. Opening a fresh can is like shoving your face in a bag of hops. The homebrewers out there know what I’m talking about. The flavors are fresh and green and earthy.
For example, Leota Mae, the juiciest beer in their lineup, still has certain earthy dankness. It’s brewed with trendy Mosaic and Ekuanot, but the flavor is balanced. The nose is floral. The flavor is fresh. No mango or passion fruit, just grapefruit and pine, yet the beer tastes new and exciting.
Top Cutter and Bottom Cutter, single and double IPAs respectively, are a more old school. The flavors are bitter and earthy -- pine tar, cedar, a third thing. But the aroma is one hundred percent raw hops. Even Bale Breaker’s light pale ale -- Field 41, only 4.5% ABV -- reveals a huge scent. Herbal hop flowers just waft from the can.
I’m not sure how they do it, but I am in love with these beers. Is it a new dry hopping technique? Is it just the freshness of having the hops grown right there? I don’t know, but I am definitely going to look for more.

It's been a busy August so far. And I know that it's Wednesday, but there is always time for a #VinylAndBeerSunday. I decided to dive into ARC OF A DIVER from STEVE WINWOOD. I have always been a fan of WINWOOD's work with TRAFFIC and THE SPENCER DAVID GROUP. His solo work has been a bit hit or miss for me. But I find his second solo album, released in 1980, to be a robust and robust work from start to finish. The disc contains the hit WHILE YOU SEE A CHANCE. But there are also excellent tunes such as the title track, SECOND HAND WOMAN, and DUST. I have accompanied this superb set of songs with a fresh beer from BALE BREAKER BREWING COMPANY out of Moxie, WA. Their CLARITY RARITY IPA RELEASE NUMBER 2 is a new hoppy Hazy IPA with plenty of juicy flavors, including orange and tangerine peel. It's a glass of sunshine on an August evening. Highly recommend both the album and the beer. So....what are you listening to? What are you drinking? #vinyl #vinylcollection #stevewinwood #arcofadiver @stevewinwood #craftbeer #ipa #beerstagram #hazyipa #balebreakerbrewingcompany @balebreaker #clarityrarityrelease2 #beermusic (at Salem, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDiBR8PjPwA/?igshid=33y6op11cpyj

Mother Earth Brewing releasing a new Project-X Series IPA New Horizons and a 4Seasons Imperial IPA with Bale Breaker Brewing.
Press Release
Vista, CA & Nampa, ID … Good things come in pairs, as they say. Mother Earth Brew Co. is helping hop heads beat the summer heat with a pair of back-to-back releases this month, in a rare confluence of programming that begins with a clean Imperial IPA collaboration, followed immediately by a Hazy IPA as part of their rotating Project X Series. The former also belonging to a series – Four Seasons.
The collab hits shelves first, featuring tropical vibes from experimental hops. Brewed with Bale Breaker Brewing Company, the hop growing vets-turned-craft brewers joined Mother Earth to brew an 8.5% clean DIPA that is sneaky-balanced but still explodes with the kind of hop influence you’d expect from heavy-hitters like Galaxy, Citra, and HBC 586 – an experimental hop known for a medley of fruit flavors and peppery finish.
Following Four Seasons by exactly one week, New Horizons follows the familiar Mother Earth formula of hoppy, yet approachable NEIPAs, while also boasting hops royalty such as Mosaic & Strata. Without the use of Lactose, as can be typical for NEIPAs, New Horizons comes through full bodied, with a tangy, wheatiness that sets up citrus and floral hop characteristics.
“New Horizons and Four Seasons [Summer] are such different beers. While New Horizons leans on a pillowy body and a soft, drinkable impression, the collab DIPA is much more intense, with an additional 45 IBUs to go along with a more robust hop profile that’s led by notes of sweet fruit and grapefruit pith. It’s fun to have them out at the same time to give folks a choice on what kind of experience they want to have.”
-Chris Baker – Director of Brewing Operations, Mother Earth Brew Co.
New Horizons and Four Seasons-Summer will roll out through June and July in 16oz cans and on draft at independent craft beer retailers or at Mother Earth’s Idaho tasting rooms. Customers are urged to search Mother Earth’s beer finder at findmotherearthbrewing.com to locate Four Seasons and New Horizons near them.
