Saturday night in Rock Springs, WY. Corporate wasteland but at least there's a bar in an old Chicago across the street from the hotel. Double tito's n' soda with a lime and some asshole that probably has a 2nd home in Sun Valley, ID singing "you might think that I'm redneck but I'm rednecker than you!" on the radio...? Jesus Christ what is going on with pop culture right now? Saw a thing online that said "well Donald Trump's the president and John Mayer plays guitar with the Grateful Dead so yeah we've entered into some weird shit!" Its all a dream outside of what's in front of me anymore. Waste of time tryin to make sense of any it. I have such a love/hate relationship with these small Wyoming towns. Some of the most vivid and inspiring memories driving through this state with whichever lover I was obsessed with at that period of time. Staying at some $50 hotel, walking to the local bar, and having one on one conversations in the corner amongst the oil workers getting themselves fired up for whoever they were gonna fuck or fight that evening. I've also never felt so alone as I do here. Not in a bad way necessarily. Just the passing through. Writing in my hotel and then getting drunk enough to fall asleep. It's not as depressing as it sounds but maybe there is an expiration on all if this. I'm a little exhausted with the tortured artist cliché but it's the only space I wanna write in anymore anymore. Maybe time for another trip down south. Paul Thorn has this song "Mediocrity is king" on his last album and it is so damn good I listened to it 10 times on the drive today. Bummer party song of the decade. The chorus goes: "Everything's changed I dont know who's to blame But I do know one thing Mediocrity's king"   Maybe sitting in an Old Chicago isn't the best place to be writing this but actually what am I bitching about? Retracing my steps up in Valley County the last few days. Got word one of my dad's best friends, John James, passed a few days ago. One of the more "spiritual" types of my childhood actually. Last time I saw him he did some "crystal healing" on me which was mainly him swinging a crystal around my head and talking to me...which felt really healing actually? I didn't understand it but I did feel better against all my pessimistic intuitions. Anyways I sat at The Mill for a few drinks around the fireplace and noticed all the paintings there were by our old family friend Michael Oloughlin (who was close friends with John when we were kids). Incredible paintings. Like tapping into some other world incredible paintings. I heard Michael passed a year or so ago. There's all these bread crumbs around this area that lead me to remembering these elders that are such a massive part of my moral fabric...the teachers. And as they pass on I just keep tryin to remind myself to keep whatever torch they are passing on burning. Just in my outlook on life if not through the music we play. We're gonna play some shows this weekend up here with the band. For John. And Michael. And Lois. And Vern. And Andy. And this place that raised us. Goin through stuff at the cabin the last 2 days and found a bunch of poems, old journals, and songs from 2009/2010 buried in a box. I've kinda fell off keeping a journal the last 2 years spending too much time at the bar but after reading these old ones it really is so cool to look back. Read about where your 20 or 25 year old head was at. Found the original ideas for this song and trips me out to think how long ago that was. Or more so who I was. Just can't believe this album is almost 10 years old.
