2. Fear
Tumblr media
a/n: aNgST wHO?
The Underworld was, ironically, above water.
Situated on the vast Pacific, a large island, about twice the size of the United States of America, is known as the Capital. With spells and magic, all of the Coven kingdoms were hidden in plain sight with one being in the Atlantic, some scattered near Antarctica and one at the Indian Ocean.
One of the famous ones that humans might recognize is the Bermuda triangle.
There are 3 kingdoms at the Atlantic Ocean: House Inure, House Languo, House Vermille.
House Languo is situated right at the middle of the Triangle, luring many pilots and shipmen to become their next meal.
This is why House Languo is one of the richest houses as they are the known sellers of authentic blood and would even send you a drugged human, bounded and ready to be eaten. The profits kept coming in and they were it so fast that humans started to suspect and created the legend of the Bermuda, calling it a cursed and a haunted part of the world.
In truth, it’s just a part of the Underworld but with frequent unwanted visitors.
But the 2 biggest kingdoms, Kalon and Orenda, rest on the Pacific Ocean with the Capital on top of the Ring of Fire, known in the Underworld as the Entrance to Hell.
Some say it’s unlucky to have a vampire kingdom so near the thing that could kill them but some say the reason they’re so respected is that they are so near it and could withstand it.
But who really knows the answer.
Waking up from the bright sunlight, you squirmed and accidentally rolled out of bed, dragging the sheets and covers. At this point, you were so tired that you were willing to fall asleep again but as you settled on your back, your eyes snapped open and you blinked, surprised, when you saw a head of blonde hair peer over the edge of the bed.
“And you call yourself a queen.”
His smirk after the insult made a growl escape your lips and you sprang back up to the bed, sitting on his bare torso and pinning his arms beside his head. Jaemin smirked up at you and unknowingly licked his lips at your bare chest with the sight of purple and red colors left from last night.
You scoffed slightly at the look on his face until you noticed his line of sight and shook your head, disappointed at your perverted husband. Releasing his arms and leaning back to place your butt on his lower abdomen, you quickly shifted away, feeling it poke your back.
With an irritated look, your eyebrows knitted together, “As if you didn’t use me enough last night, you still want more. How much more do you still want me from, Orendian?”
Jaemin smugly placed his left arm beneath his head and his right hand drifted to softly grab your chin, “We were married for an alliance and children symbolize that it is official, don’t you think?”
“I will not become your birth factory. As much as you don’t want to, I intend to rule beside you and I will voice out my opinion if it’s needed. I will not hesitate to put you in your place, king or not.”
Thinking that your statement would make him angry, instead it made his grin wider. His right hand wandered down to your waist and his left arm left its spot from his head to place it to the other side of your waist. You looked at him curiously, guarded and not knowing of what his true intentions were. Through half-lidded eyes, Jaemin looked up at you and his grin turned lazy.
“You are quite bold, woman. Aren’t you afraid that one day, you say the wrong word and I rip out your tongue from your mouth?”
With a defiant glare, you responded, “What I said last night still remains true today and for eternity. You will never scare me, Na Jaemin. For you are only a puny prince whose future will bring the Underworld farther than Hell itself.”
Although his smile remained, Jaemin’s eyes visibly hardened and with all of his strength, he forcibly pinned you to the bed, red eyes glazing over your face. Lingering on odd places like your cheeks or your neck, Jaemin blinked slowly at you, anger radiating from his form.
“A puny prince, huh? My wife, my queen, seems to think that I am not capable of leading our country for the better. Should I teach her a lesson? Should I fuck her until her legs are shaking and mark her dry until all the blood is gone from her body? Or should I just hand her over to my men and let her experience a second without her title,” he sneered.
Fear bubbled inside you but you forced it down and you cursed the weakness of your mind.
Even though vampires were mostly indestructible on the outside with cement-like skin, they were very prone and vulnerable to normal emotions. The absence of the heart meant nothing as the blood of humans carried something that fueled their existence and it traveled inside. But normal emotions was normal and could easily be felt, vampire or not.
A small but cold laugh escaped your lips, “My bloodline runs all over the kingdoms. If you should even do that, they are obligated to ruin Orenda due to their association with me. So try it, my king. For it will be the last time you’ll ever see your country and your family, alive.”
The threat clearly affected the boy but you were taken aback by his response. A pair of cold lips smashed to your own and you responded just as harsh, biting his lips and drawing his blood.
But when his lips left yours to bite on your flesh, a soft whimper filled the room as the razor sharp teeth roughly attached themselves on you and the abuse was something familiar yet unfamiliar to you. The fear of being trapped and so helpless that you couldn’t even push him away because you were weak.
He was taking his anger out, on you.
And there was nothing you could do to defend yourself.
You cried on the tub that day.
Paris was unusually cold during the summer month of June.
You bundled up in a beige trench coat with a black baker boy hat and a pair of vintage oval sunglasses from the 60s. The sunlight did little to nothing as it was still near 40 degrees and it didn’t warm the air. However, the sun’s fiery rays were still felt by sensitive beings like you and vampires were very prone to being cautious and try to stay away from hot things like those.
“Dear cousin, I take your honeymoon with the prince did not satisfy you as you are here shopping with me in Paris when you could be busy making love to your new husband.”
“Jaehyun, do watch your mouth. As much as I could care less for him, insulting his manhood is enough to cause that wretched temper of his into launching a seige to Metanoia and I do love you and Uncle and Aunt but your kingdom is far smaller and weaker than his army. You are one of my favorites and I’d rather love to watch Hoseok for his coronation to his kingdom that is still there.”
Jaehyun watched you with an amused look as your answer was said as you flicked through the coat racks full of Louis Vuitton coats, joining you with the inspection of the clothing. You were so nonchalant over the whole thing and he can really see the amount of training your parents have put you through to prepare you for your marriage to Jaemin.
“You know, sometimes I forget that you were the same girl who cried because I wouldn’t let her put a flower crown on my head,” he chuckled causing you look at him with a nostalgic look on your face.
“Oh, yes. I was quite naive back then.”
Jaehyun sighed as his eyes continued to look up and down on this particular honey mustard coat, “I remember you being scared of the most childish things. Johnny surprised you by the garden and you cried your little eyes out until your mother threatened to beat you. I guess that’s why you’re not really scared of anything now, huh?” He turned to look at you with a boyish smile, implying your easy agreement to the marriage.
“But the difference was, everything was perfect back then. We were young and we didn’t have anything to fear except for bath time. Now, we worry over who we’re expected to be and who we ought to marry for alliances.” Jaehyun’s fingers froze and he looked off into the wall. “Our lives have slowly become purely our parents and it fucking scares me that one day, we will be like them too. That’s my fear, Jaehyun. My one fear.”
Turning away from the horridly bright colors of the clothing, Jaehyun looked back at you and he felt sadness swelling up inside at the sight before him.
You’ve managed to fool everyone with your bravery and courage for your parents’ favor. However, there was a time where it wasn’t all an act and that you really were ready to risk it all just because they asked you to.
A naive little girl.
But now that you’ve been exposed to everything and anything, Jaehyun saw the little girl crying behind those scarlet orbs, not because of his strong refusal of the orchid covered crown, but with fear of the world and no one to defend her for what’s to come.
a/n: oof sorry for making jaemin look like an asshole but hey, we need a plot line!

Author’s Note: Hi folks, apologies for leaving it so long between chapters - it's been a bit of a manic weekend! The waiting room’s seats were hard and cold, and Anna found herself reflecting on how unwelcoming that felt as a patient. She was feeling nervous about what the upcoming appointment might reveal about the health of her and her baby, and her mind raced with apprehensive thoughts of what was to come with the pregnancy, and eventual child. The last thing she needed right now was an uncomfortable chair.
“Anna Westergaard?” Kristoff’s voice snapped her out of her thoughts, and she got to her feet to follow him.
As they settled into their respective seats, Anna basked in the feeling of friendly familiarity she found herself experiencing with him. He’d been coming into The Snøffnug Café at least once a week for a slice of pie, cup of coffee, and a quick chat with Anna and the other two waitresses. Even Cliff had begun to give the doctor a friendly greeting and occasional discount when he visited.
“How are you doing today, Anna?” he asked her, friendly but professional.
“I’m doing alright. I feel good, no uncomfortable symptoms. Well, a little bit of morning sickness, but it’s not severe or anything.”
He nodded as he quickly typed up some notes on her answer. “The sonographer at the hospital forwarded me a copy of your scan – did you decide to find out the sex or are you keeping it as a surprise?”
“I don’t want to know,” Anna replied. “I just call it- uh, them ‘baby’.” Her hand subconsciously made its way to her belly, where a small bump was beginning to surface, just little enough for it to still be her secret, though she knew that would soon change.
“Alright, ‘baby’ it is.” His eyes were twinkling with the knowledge of a secret, and Anna couldn’t help but smile. “If you could just hop on the bed for me, and I’ll have a quick measure so we can see how baby’s growing.”
No one would have ever accused Anna of being graceful, and she demonstrated that perfectly as she clumsily mounted the bed. She tried not to move the paper that had been placed down on it, and as a result her movements looked as awkward as they felt. Kristoff was kind enough to pretend not to notice, but Anna couldn’t help but grimace inwardly.
To distract herself from the embarrassment she felt, Anna found herself asking, “So what made you transfer to Småby Bend anyway? You’ve never said.”
Kristoff had just turned to her after rummaging in his desk drawers for a tape measure, and Anna noticed the flicker of hesitation that came across his features. He quickly recovered though, and she thought she might have made it up.
“Oh, it’s kind of a long story. I’ll try to give you the Sparknotes version.” They shared a grin, and he quickly asked her permission to lift her top so he could measure her tummy. She consented, and he went on, “I, uh, I’m actually married. I don’t wear the ring anymore because we’re… separated, I guess? We got married just after I qualified, so like two years ago. Which is a very short time to be married, but apparently long enough for her to realise that she’d actually rather be with someone else, so…”
Anna kept silent as he spoke. His hands on her stomach were warm, and ever so gentle as he carefully measured the small bump from top to bottom. She felt her heart beating faster as he leaned in close to read the numbers on the tape measure. Nervously, she suppressed that feeling as far to the back of her mind as she possibly could.
“I didn’t even see it coming.” He laughed, but there was a great sadness in it. “She just came home from work one day, told me she didn’t love me anymore, and that she was leaving me to be with her best friend.”
In a whisper, Anna let out a soft: “I am so sorry.”
He shook his head. “Don’t be. It was for the best. She’s happier now than she ever was with me, and it’s better to have split up early than to keep up a façade for decades. But I couldn’t stay where we’d started to build a life together, so I went looking for a new job, and it turned out that Småby Bend was in need of a doctor, so here I am!” He paused, glancing up at her in a way that made her think that he was debating whether or not to carry on. “I like it here. It’s a beautiful little town, and it’s got everything I need. The people here are… really lovely as well.” Anna couldn’t ignore the warmth in his expression, but she dismissed the notion that it was for her.
“For what it counts, I’m glad you ended up here.” She meant it.
Standing upright, Kristoff cleared his throat. “Baby’s growing perfectly. Just the size I’d expect them to be at this stage.” He turned around so she could readjust her top to cover her tummy up again, and she heard him typing up something into her notes once more. When he finished, he reached for a blood pressure cuff and turned back to her. “We can take your blood pressure while you’re still lying down, it’s easier for you.”
Not for the first time, Anna recognised how respectful and caring he was towards her. Of course, he was a doctor, so it was to be expected, but she still appreciated how he respected her body and her privacy, and wanted to make these appointments as non-invasive and easy as possible. Her instincts had told her the first time she met him that he was someone she was safe with. Maybe it was that sense of safety, or the idea that she had to reciprocate his honesty, but she started to speak.
“Hans wasn’t always a drinker. We started dating in high school, so obviously he wasn’t drinking then. I’d had a crush on him for years; he was so handsome, and sweet, and funny.” She smiled to herself. “When he asked me out, I thought I was so happy that I thought I was going to faint. He was so nice to me, you wouldn’t believe. My mama died when I was sixteen, and he was right there to support me through it. What teenage boy can take that responsibility?
“Did you know Småby Bend used to have a cloth manufacturer? It was a factory for knitting wools and fleeces and stuff for blankets.” Kristoff nodded that he knew what she was referring to, and Anna went on, “Hans worked there after graduation, six days a week for seven whole years. It paid for our wedding, for the house, and all the little things we needed. And I worked in the café, just to keep myself busy more than anything.
“The businesses that used the factory’s supplies weren’t happy with their profit margins, though. Not only could they get the same material cheaper from elsewhere, but we’re so ‘middle of nowhere’ that we were really hard for them to get to so they could pick up their stuff. So more and more companies stopped buying from Småby Bend, and eventually they just closed the factory altogether.
“We’d only been married for two months, but after that, Hans was miserable. He felt useless, like a failure, and he used to have a drink every night to take the edge off his worrying. Then he started drinking through the day too, and now I think he drinks more beers than he does water.”
Kristoff hadn’t moved while she was telling him all this, but he carefully stepped towards her now to begin sliding the blood pressure cuff up her arm.
“It’s been four years since the factory closed. Now he’s got a job at the garage, but he still drinks every day. Sometimes I think that he couldn’t stop even if he wanted to anymore. It makes him angry. The world makes him angry; he feels lost, and not himself, I can tell. And I make him angry sometimes. Some of the things I say, or do, just… I piss him off. I don’t mean to, but I do.”
She was finished, and she knew that Kristoff picked up on that, although he didn’t say anything. In silence, he filled the cuff with air, before taking the reading and going to write it down.
“Your- the reading suggests that your blood pressure is a little low,” he said eventually. “It shouldn’t be too serious, but just to make you aware.”
“Okay, thank you,” she answered politely. She didn’t like this new way they were speaking to each other. It felt so professional, so distant. “I brought you a pie,” she told him at last. “‘Death by Chilli Chocolate’. It’s a new recipe I’m testing out, so I want to know what you think of it.”
“I’ll be sure to stop by with my critiques.” He smiled at her, and she basked in the warmth of it. “That’s it for today, you can hop down whenever you’re ready.”
She got up quickly, too quickly. The dizziness hit her like a sack of bricks, and she felt herself losing her balance. The ground seemed to be galloping up towards her as the room spun, and she cried out as she realised that she was falling.
Strong arms on her own helped her to regain her balance. Kristoff’s grip was firm as he steadied her, and her dizziness slowly receded as he held her upright. She looked up at his face, meeting his concerned gaze as she came back to herself.
“Are you alright?” he asked worriedly.
“I’m fine. Thank you.” She made no move to step away from him, and neither did he.
They could have pretended that they stayed that close for that long simply because they were concerned. He could say that he was keeping hold of her to make sure she was fully recovered before he let go. She could have said that she still felt dizzy, and she needed his strength to steady her.
But that wouldn’t have explained why his hand went to her face, gently brushing aside a piece of hair that had come loose when she lost her balance. That gentleness was magnetic to Anna. She stepped closer to him, so close she could feel his breath on her.
“Anna,” he murmured, “You deserve so much more than a husband who doesn’t realise how lucky he is to have you.”
She didn’t reply. She didn’t even think. Instead, she moved her hands to his shoulders, rising to tip-toe even as he leaned down towards her. Kristoff’s hand cupped her face and his arm wrapped around her waist, pressing her closer to him and making butterflies flutter in her stomach. Her heart was pounding, and the room was spinning for an entirely different reason than before. It felt as though every moment in her life had been leading to this one, here, with her leaning in desperately to kiss Kristoff Bjorgman.
A knock on the door caused them to jump apart mere milliseconds before their lips met.
“Come in,” Kristoff called, startled but recovering now that they were separate.
A nurse opened the door, and Anna didn’t hear a word they said as she fumbled with her bag, placing the cake tin she’d brought for him on his desk. Her fingers were shaking as she buttoned up her coat, and when the nurse left, she all but ran from the room.

Special Delivery
Katniss stood on the platform of the train station waiving to Annie. Taking a deep breath, she was next to leave. Miss Effie classified her as Special Delivery.  Katniss was to travel first class all the way to Ohio.
She was glad to be leaving the complicated city life for a chance to start over as a mail order bride. It didn't feel  real. Less than a year ago she and her family had migrated to the United States from a tiny province in Europe that was no more.
She'd experienced so much death and violence. They left their country of Panem because of civil war. They arrived New York and, almost immediately, her father became ill and died. Soon afterwards, her sister and mother succumbed.
Penniless,  she ended up working in a factory  ten hours a day, six days a week. Those first few weeks by herself were the hardest. She lived on the streets until she met Annie at the factory. Together they scrimped all of their money to pay for a room. It was Annie who first saw the ad in the papers for Miss Effie's School For Refinement of Young Ladies. The ad promised at the end of the course young women would be matched in marriage with an eligible well-to-do husband. At first Katniss wanted no part of it, but Annie begged and pleaded. On a  bright Sunday morning, their day off, they schlepped all the way  from the slums of Brooklyn to Hamilton Heights, in Manhattan. 221B Baker Street was an ornate elegant brownstone townhouse. Katniss wore her best dress and so did Annie.
Miss Effie was the most unique woman Katniss had ever met.  She dressed in the Regency style but her dresses were bright, loud concoctions; her hats were filled with birds, nests, twigs, and leaves to reflect the season. Miss Effie spoke English like no one else and she was a great stickler for manners. But she did provide Katniss and Annie a great education. Katniss learned how to read, write and do numbers. Miss Effie prepared them for marriage and everything in between, from how to cook outside to how to cook in the most expensive kitchens using the most expensive ingredients to the simplest. Three months later they  graduated, Miss Effie had kept her bargain. Annie was betrothed to a gentleman from the Bayou region. Katniss was going to Ohio. She watched the train leave with an Annie on it, before turning to find her own train.
Miss Effie gifted each one of her students a trunk full of clothing. Katniss only had two garments: her day-to-day garment that she wore  to work in and her best outfit she wore to Miss Effie’s school. Her garments were simple and well-worn since she had sold everything after her family's death to settle accounts and to provide them with proper burials. Miss Effie's gift was generous, it included a corset, two pairs of knit stockings and a pair of silk stocking, garters, green ribbon, two shifts, four petticoats, four aprons, three gowns, and a proper bonnet. She'd never had dresses before or one of the new corsets, she'd only had worn stays.
Katniss presented her ticket and was dashed away to a private compartment. Katniss had never seen such opulence. This was going to be her home for the next few days until she had to change trains again.
Sitting down, she took out the letter from her reticule. She hoped her husband was kind as the letter promised he would be.
His name was Peeta Mellark and Katniss hoped they would be compatible. She clutched the letter in her hand. She was married by proxy Peeta’s older brother, Degory, stood in Peeta’s stead since Peeta lived in a remote region of Ohio. Degory described his brother as average height and stocky. He said Peeta had the trademark blonde wavy hair and blue eyes of their family. He gave her a picture and he was in her eyes handsome. Katniss clutched the picture.  Hope bloomed in her heart. She wanted peace and the West offered it. She couldn't wait to meet her new husband in less than a fortnight's time.
Two Weeks Later:
“You what?” Peeta exclaimed. His partner Haymitch Abernathy didn't flinch at his outburst. The man calmly slid his hand into his pockets.
“We got you a bride and she'll be here on the next stagecoach. She's travelled all the way from New York...special delivery,” Haymitch reiterated. He sat back in his chair as if waiting for Peeta to explode.
Peeta shook his head, dumbfounded, “I'm sorry, you what?”
“Now don't be acting dumb boy you know perfectly well what I said,” Haymitch said, scraping back his chair. He unfolded from the chair slowly.
Peeta couldn't believe what he had just heard. It was too early in the day for this. He hadn't even had his tea. “When you mean we, who is we?”
“Degory and I.”
Peeta should have known that his meddling eldest brother would be involved somehow. If his brother was involved that meant his mother was involved as well. Looking at Haymitch dead straight in the eyes he said, “No.”
“I knew you would say something like that so here…” Haymitch slid the marriage license onto the table.
He was angry and his hands shook as he picked up the the paper. Her name was written on it, but he was so upset he couldn't read straight. “This is the most boneheaded...how could you have done this Haymitch? With my brother!” Peeta yelled. He wasn't one for yelling or screaming. Normally he had a temperate personality, but when he got mad he tended to lose it and, if necessary, he was known for throwing a few things.
“Son your brother and I did the best thing for you. A man out here shouldn't be alone.”
Peeta wasn't dead set against getting married. He hoped one day to be able to meet a girl, fall in love and eventually propose. What his brother and Haymitch did bothered him greatly, he had no say in the matter. He was married to a virtual stranger, a girl he knew nothing about.
“I know you you're mad, madder than a cat on bath day. But listen to me, you've been working like a dog ever since you left home. For the past four years you've done nothing but work, work, work, work. If Sunday wasn't a religious day I suppose you be working on a Sunday too. You're going to burn yourself out. You need a woman, someone who can work with you, someone who can help ease the burden, a partner.”
Everything Haymitch said was true. If Peeta had a partner, someone he had chosen, they could share the workload. It wasn't easy being in the middle of nowhere with just Haymitch to look at across the dinner table. The only company Haymitch kept, besides Peeta, was those damned geese.  They had one neighbor and it was a good half-Aday's ride. Town was another half-a-day's ride, if he rode his team at a brisk speed. Peeta didn't show the other man had a point. He grimaced, stood of akimbo, letting his muscles bulge to show he was upset.
“Listen, boy, your brother met the girl. He said she was hard-working, smart, quiet, quick, just the type of girls needed out here.”
“If she's so great, why don't you take her?”
Haymitch looked like he was ready to slap him upside his  head. “I'm an old man, ’sides she's already got a husband.”
“Well, you can buy her ticket back and get rid of her. I ain’t going with you.”
Haymitch only shook his head at Peeta, and Peeta felt a twinge of guilt for being so rough with Haymitch. The man had uprooted himself from his cozy life back in Philadelphia to come out here with him. It had been a rough four years, but the farm was starting to make a profit.
“I'm going to go outside to hitch the horses so that we can go meet your bride in town.”
Peeta took his hat and threw it on the table as he ran his hand through his blond hair. He left his mother's side because he could no longer take the abuse. Coming out to Ohio was a grand gamble for him. A day didn't pass by when he wanted to bury his hands in some dough and do something familiar. He was a baker at heart but he needed to do this to show that he was not under his mother's control. Getting this “bride,” undermined all the work he had done for the past several years.
He placed his hands on his hips and looked around at the cabin that he had painstakingly built. He built this house with a family in mind. It had two bedrooms and a loft where children could sleep comfortably. There was an expansive living area with a large fireplace, a pot belly stove, a sink with a pump from a well he made, and a pantry. He even had cold storage space built underneath the house so that they could store food in the winter.
This was his dream, to have a family of his own. His children would be loved and cherished. He wanted to share all of this with the woman he loved, the woman he chose.
He felt cheated. But even in the midst of his dilemma his mind went to the girl who was traveling all the way from New York to the wilds of Ohio. A girl who had hopes and dreams just as he did when he had hopped on the wagon trail from Philadelphia.
“Confound it, Haymitch,” Peeta said under his breath. He took the pitcher of water and rinsed his face and washed his hands, then put his hat back on. He didn't know what he was going to do with this girl under foot. There had to be a way to get rid of her, he just had to find it.
Haymitch had a darned grin when Peeta walked outside.
“Not a word, Haymitch,” Peeta warned as he hopped onto the wagon. He wanted no sass from Haymitch.
They were halfway to town when Peeta found his voice again. “How do you know if she's even a quality girl?”
“Well you know Gale Hawthorne?”
Peeta thought about his ornery neighbor to the east of him. The only time Gale smiled was when his wife Delly was around. They were the oddest couple. He was quiet and brooding and she was always smiling and talking. Delly was a sweet woman and fiercely devoted to Gale.
“Yeah.”
“Well his wife Delly came from the same agency as your bride.  I had no idea Delly was a mail order bride. Miss Effie trains young women to be good wives.”
Peeta had heard of Miss Effie's School For Refinement of Young Ladies from Delly. He had no idea the woman was a matchmaker. He reasoned his bride had to be a good woman, Delly was a testament. Though even with all his reasoning, the fact was he didn't want to be married to this poor girl who was coming here. And maybe, just maybe, he could get his marriage annulled. It wasn't a church marriage after all.
“How did you ever come up with the scheme in the first place?” Peeta asked. To say he was curious was an understatement. The only thing Haymitch knew besides geese and horses was the bottom of his whisky flask.
“I was at the Hawthorns' one day  complaining about how I didn't get a break from you  and  Delly said you needed to get married and have a family.”
Peeta raised an eyebrow the muscle in his chin twitched, he was frustrated.
“What Delly said got me thinking. If you got married and had a couple of youngins, say five. If you spent six minutes with each kid a day that would give me thirty minutes a day to myself. We work from sunup to sundown. You have me so busy I can't even think for myself and thirty minutes sounded like a holiday.”
Peeta had no idea Haymitch felt this way. He squirmed in his seat. There were times in the summer they worked well past nine at night. Haymitch was older than Peeta and Peeta supposed Haymitch needed time to rest.
“So I got the agency's name from Delly and wrote to Miss Effie on your behalf. When she arranged the marriage, I wrote to Degory to help me. Degory promised he would not involve your mother.  He wanted to make sure the girl was good enough, so he paid a visit to Miss Effie. Upon meeting her, your brother was convinced. He arranged to marry her by proxy.”
“How did you get my signature?” Peeta hoped they forged his signature or the paperwork. This would give him his out.
Haymitch cleared his throat, “Remember a while back you signed some papers.”
“You said those are for the purchase of some livestock?” Peeta nearly stopped the wagon.
“I snuck the contract in there.”
The situation really was quite funny if you look at it from an objective point of view. He would have laughed if this happened to someone else.
“Trust me, Peeta, you're going to love her.”
Peeta didn't think so.
They arrived in town and parked the wagon by the general store. The stagecoach had just pulled into town.
Haymitch jumped off the wagon Peeta didn't follow. “You coming, boy?”
Peeta shook his head. No. There was no way he was going to go see a girl he wasn't even interested in meeting. He pulled his hat over his head and leaned back in the bench to take a nap.
It wasn't a big town, so noise traveled even on a busy day like today. Peeta heard Haymitch coming toward him. Sighing deeply, Peeta sat up ready to crush the poor girls dreams.
“Peeta, this is Katniss Everdeen, I mean Mellark.” Haymitch introduced.
When Peeta saw her all the arguments he had mounted in his mind disappeared. She was as lovely as the sunset on a clear crisp evening. Her eyes were the color of lit embers of charcoal, they possessed a fire that stole his breath away. His heart thumped in his chest loudly and he became deaf and dumb from her beauty.
Katniss offered him a shy smile.
Peeta was a goner. He offered her his best smile as he jumped down from the wagon. He fumbled with taking off his hat. He was wrong and he would eat every single one of his words. He had found the girl he would share his life and home with and she'd come special delivery.
